As for your other question, I've read The Hunt for Red October, The Sum Of all Fears,and The Cardinal of The Kremlin (my favorite so far). I started Red Storm Rising before Winter Break and plan on finishing when I go back to school. The only movie adaptation I've seen was of The Hunt For Red October, and I thought it was really well made

Punctuation

You may want to look up when punctuation is used inside or outside quotation marks. In America, commas and periods are almost always put inside the quotation marks. In the UK, they are placed inside or outside depending on the logic of the sentence. I thought you would be interested. I am quite aware of that, which is why I pointed out your punctuation issues in the first place.

I do realize that Wikipedia was started by Americans, and that the majority of editors of the English Wikipedia are American. However, I also realize that Wikipedia does not automatically use all American spelling and punctuation.

For example, not all Wikipedia articles use American English. Take a look at MOS:ENGVAR, which states that "the English Wikipedia does not prefer any major national variety of the language".

As for punctuation, instead of ascribing to a particular nationality's rules of punctuation, Wikipedia has chosen to list clear guidelines in the Manual of Style. The punctuation guidelines can be seen at MOS:PUNCT, which includes the information on logical punctuation that I told you about earlier, which I do hope you have read by now. Just to clarify, on Wikipedia some things vary depending on the form of English used, such as date format ("month day, year" vs. "day month year"). However, Wikipedia sets some things that should be used throughout, regardless of whether you are writing in the British or American form of English (or any other form for that matter); logical punctuation is one of them. To quote the Manual of Style: "On Wikipedia, place all punctuation marks inside the quotation marks if they are part of the quoted material and outside if they are not. This practice is sometimes referred to as logical punctuation."

Also, it should be noted that Severus Snape is an article about a Harry Potter character. Harry Potter is a set of books by a British author, so even if Wikipedia used regional variations of punctuation for quotations, it would use the British form (i.e. logical punctuation) per WP:TIES.

Narcissa in Death Eaters article draft

Hi there! I appreciate your comments regarding the move of Narcissa Malfoy's section into the Death Eater article. I took notice of your suggestion and made this draft, to give you and any other interested editor an idea of how the article would look like. Note that, besides the creation of the "Associates" section, I also added a note on Narcissa after the Death Eaters table, using JKR's quote that states she was never an official Death Eater. I'm glad you liked my idea. I've made a couple small changes over on your sandbox draft. There's a couple things else that I noticed but I don't have time now to figure out how to deal with them. First of all, the section "Death Eaters and their crimes" includes Greyback currently. Should that just be straight-out deleted, as long as all the information is in Greyback's section later in the article? We are sure that Greyback is not a Death Eater, right? I don't have the books with me here to check, and when I looked him up over on the HP Wiki I was getting conflicting information, since apparently he wears DE robes or something. And speaking of the HP Wiki, both of the cited sources in Greyback's section are of his article there. I don't think those are appropriate sources, so I guess they should be deleted, but perhaps there would be a way to consult the sources cited in that article or otherwise find better sources to include here.

The change and associated warning were made over a year ago. Someone with the "95.147.73.130" IP made the change, but the IP has probably been reassigned since then, so that you-the-person-currently-with-the-IP did not make those changes. Don't worry about it, and feel free to edit Wikipedia positively if the opportunity arises. "Plagiarism"

Hi; I have no problem with the edits you've been doing to Severus Snape, but do note that "plagiarism" is the use someone else's work without attribution. A sentence that is taken from a source, and then footnoted and the source of the quote identified, does not constitute plagiarism, since it has been properly attributed. I'm afraid that's not true, because the sentence was not in quotation marks, which are part of proper attribution when you are taking words and not just ideas. As Avoiding Plagiarism: Common Forms of Plagiarism, a University of New South Wales website that is linked from WP:PLAGIARISM, states, "Lifting sentences or paragraphs from someone else, even with proper acknowledgement, gives the impression that the idea or information comes from the source cited, but that the phrasing, the choice of words to express it, is your own contribution." Although the citation given was sufficient attribution for the ideas, the fact that the sentence was not in quotation marks implied that the phrasing was written by WP contributors (and therefore, I might add, under Creative Commons licensing), when the words were actually Shawn Adler's. It may be part of going "above and beyond" to avoid even the possibility of plagiarism; like I said, I have no problems with the change made. As someone who actually deals with the issue professionally (even to the degree of considering "self-plagiarism"), I find the sentence you quote here a bridge too far (should I now make sure to attribute that phrase to Cornelius Ryan, lest I be guilty of plagiarism by 'lifting a sentence from someone else'? Or to Frederick Browning? Without quotiation marks, I run afoul of that guideline); as written, taken literally, it would even forbid the use of quotations when indicated by quotation marks. Let me also point out that in my experience (as a University professor), University guidelines, especially those aimed at students, almost invariably go well above and beyond what is truly plagiarism in an attempt at creating a kind of "no man's land" around actual plagiarism where students will not even attempt to tread. Since the Wikipedia guideline on plagiarism mentions this exact situation as a form of plagiarism (third under WP:PLAGFORM: "Copying from a source acknowledged in a well-placed citation, without in-text attribution"), I maintain that I was not incorrect in using the word "plagiarism" in my edit summary. However, if I find myself in this same situation in the future, I believe I would use a different, less-loaded word, so as to hopefully avoid further controversy. Thank you for your time!
