Please join us at an event this coming Tuesday: the third Wik-Ed Women editing session will take place on January 20 from 6pm to 10pm at the Los Angeles Contemporary Archive downtown. This series of informal get-togethers is designed to encourage Los Angeles women-in-the-arts (though all are welcome!) to contribute their expertise to Wikipedia, specifically expanding content about women artists. Please RSVP here if you plan to attend.
The LA Wikipedia community has three events in mid-February -- please consider attending!
First, we have a Valentine's Day edit-a-thon appropriately named Redondo Loves Wikipedia, which will take place at the Redondo Beach Public Library from 10am to 1pm on Saturday, February 14. Join library staff, the Redondo Beach Historical Society, and others to help improve Wikipedia's coverage of Redondo Beach!
Second, we have a Wik-Ed Women editing session on Tuesday, February 17 from 6pm to 10pm at the Los Angeles Contemporary Archive downtown. This series of informal get-togethers is designed to encourage Los Angeles women-in-the-arts (though all are welcome!) to contribute their expertise to Wikipedia, specifically expanding content about women artists.
Third, we have an Unforgetting LA event put on by East of Borneo in collaboration with the Getty Research Institute. Come help improve Wikipedia's coverage of LA design and architecture, and have an awesome free day at the museum -- parking will be validated for edit-a-thon participants! If you'd like to use particular books from GRI's great collection, be sure to email before 2/13 (instructions at event page).
And be sure to check out our main meetup page, because we already have three SoCal events scheduled for early March!

Invitation
Have you heard of the Kaffeeklatsch? It is a test area for women to hear and support each other. The idea came about as a result of a discussion at meta regarding my IdeaLab proposal (yet open) for WikiProject Women.
Now that the klatsch has survived an MfD and WMF legal has said that it does not violate the non discrimination policy,[1] I am looking for women editors who might like to join.
Although I have started a couple of discussions, they are not urgent. For now, the "Please introduce yourself" discussion is more important! I want to take it slow at first and build a small group before trying to address heavy topics or come up with big goals. For now, the klatsch is there as a sort of refuge. I hope you will consider joining, and invite other women editors, too, if you wish. Lightbreather (talk) 23:00, 11 February 2015 (UTC)
Really? I'm so honored! Your timing is very good too. I got some disappointing news a few days ago, nothing really serious but it was making me mopey all weekend. Now I'm heading to an Art+Feminism edit-athon this morning, with some pep in my step! Thank you very much for noticing my work.Penny Richards (talk) 14:21, 8 March 2015 (UTC)
Love the phrase "pep in my step"! Hope you had a good edit-athon. I keep updating the DYK section of the 2015 outcomes and am amazed! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:05, 8 March 2015 (UTC)
Hello, Penny Richards. Please check your email; you've got mail! It may take a few minutes from the time the email is sent for it to show up in your inbox. You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{You've got mail}} or {{ygm}} template.

A page you started (Karen Boccalero) has been reviewed!
On 15 March 2015, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Karen Boccalero, which you recently created or substantially expanded. The fact was ... that Karen Boccalero, founding director of a community arts center, was remembered as a "progressive, chain-smoking, cussing nun"? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Karen Boccalero. The LA Wikipedia community has two events in this second half of March -- please consider attending!

Next week is great too. Forgot about April Fool's Day. Thank you for your work toward refining the hook; I find that the DYK process almost always improves the nominated entry, so thank you for that too.Penny Richards (talk) 20:19, 30 March 2015 (UTC)
DYK for Laurel van der Wal
On 19 April 2015, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Laurel van der Wal, which you recently created or substantially expanded. Penny, I just approved this article through AFC, but I really doubt the notability of this person given that almost all of the sources are primary sources. I thought you might be interested in the article (women's history, disability history) and could help clean it up if possible? I may end up nominating it for deletion if it doesn't get improved. Thanks! Calliopejen1 (talk) 18:02, 14 May 2015 (UTC)
Hi Penny, I have just discovered your blog where you discussed contributing to WikiProject Disability, that got me thinking about how we can promote the WikiProject and its goals to people who are not currently involved. The next thought that came up was "edit-a-thon!" such as those held for women's history. As you're probably aware, the disability project has become rather quiet lately, sometimes I feel entirely alone there. Do you think an edit-a-thon is a viable way to kick-start some movement in the project? I'm thinking such an edit-a-thon could be a good fit for Disability Studies departments at universities (or even just one university at first). I have an idea for a theme for such an edit-a-thon, but first I'd like your thoughts on the viability of the idea. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 09:48, 17 May 2015 (UTC)
Hi Dodger67, completely agree! Thanks for visiting the blog. I love edit-a-thons. In fact, there might be a disability studies edit-a-thon in the works already for June, in conjunction with the annual meeting of the Society for Disability Studies, in Atlanta this year. I've volunteered to help with a west-coast satellite event, but I haven't heard lately what's happening with that. I'll check in with the organizers--if it's happening, I'll let you and the project know, and we can promote the project and its goals through that event; if it's not happening, then I'd definitely be interested to help with a disability-themed edit-a-thon anyway.Penny Richards (talk) 13:32, 17 May 2015 (UTC)
That's brilliant! The theme idea I mentioned above - a major current "to do" priority for the project is to expand the {{Disability by country}} series of articles. These are brief overviews of the state/status of disability in each country. About half a dozen are in mainspace already with a few more in draftspace (see Category:Draft-Class Disability articles). An editathon that concentrates on creating as many of the ~200 such articles that don't exist yet would be wonderful, but any editathon that raises the profile of the topic (and the WikiProject) is great! I presume it's too late to propose a major change in the theme of the June editathon, maybe one can be set up later in the year. I'm particularly keen for the article series to expand coverage outside the Anglosphere. We should really continue this conversation at WT:WikiProject Disability, so I will start the topic. Very well detailed for stub article, I need more information on his death, As you mentioned that he had died on March 13, 1993, This is important at least as stub article to avoid being intercepted by other editors.

Hi Penny, Katherine Ott of the National Museum of American History has organized a virtual edit-a-thon to improve the article for Justin Dart Jr. and related ADA25 themes, running from August 26-31, 2015. I've created an event page for it here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/DC/Justin_Dart_Jr._Virtual_Edit-a-thon_2015
If you could help promote it (and contribute if you have time), Katherine & I would be so grateful! I'll leave a note on the Wikiproject Disability talk page as well. Thanks! Uncommon fritillary (talk) 22:29, 24 August 2015 (UTC)

Hi Penny! Hope all is well. I am so sorry I wasn't paying attention to the update you made on the Women in Red's event's page for the Aphra Behn Society editathon! My bad. I just noticed it this morning because someone else made an edit in that section. If in the future you become aware of any other women-themed editathons, please ping me or leave a talkpage note at Women in Red, as WiR would be very glad to virtually support these events! Thank you for writing a very informational and well-sourced biography on Tillie Paul just now! We rarely come across these good quality articles at NPP. Keep up the good work!
Dear Penny, thanks for writing articles such as Beth Haller. I was surprised to see no-one had set your account as an autopatroller, so I've taken the liberty of fixing that. By the way, have you considered reviewing articles at WP:FAC? - I think your expertise would be really appreciated there. Cheers, and happy editing. ϢereSpielChequers00:02, 16 December 2015 (UTC)
