Order of National Heroes

Hello. I noticed you removed Order of National Heroes the first time I created, and I can see why. I was in a rush and I redirected Barbadian National Heroes without proposing it first on the corresponding talk page. I have now done so, in addition to adding more information to the new Order of National Heroes article. Thank you for your input.

@MaximusWikipedian: Thank you for reading my messages and starting a discussion about the redirect; it may not always be necessary to discuss, but if you don't, your edit summary must clearly indicate your intent. In this case, you needed to indicate that you had moved the content to the "Order" title. While the discussion alleviates one concern, the "Order" article still appears to be in violation of Wikipedia's attribution requirements. By doing a copy and paste move from another article, you did not attribute the original authors of the content. As such, a history merge must now be requested to correct the attribution. For future instances like this, two more appropriate options would be to

Edit Barbadian National Heroes and then move it to Order of National Heroes. If you cannot do this yourself, you may request a page to be moved at Requested Moves.
Write the article at Draft:Order of National Heroes, with the edit summary of the creation indicating that the starting content has been copied and pasted from Barbadian National Heroes.

Please let me know if this is unclear and I can try to further explain. I will submit the history merge request.

@MaximusWikipedian:I have also removed your WP:PROD tags from Knight or Dame of St. Andrew (Barbados) because PROD can't be used on redirect pages. I also don't think that it is appropriate on Knight or Dame of St Andrew, as you are only indicating that it is a subtopic of Order of Barbados; both pages may still exist. To your contention that there are no references, there is one on the page and Deletion should not be used because a page needs to be cleaned up. Wikipedia did not always have extensive requirements for referencing, so older pages may need still nee to have them added, but that in itself is not a reason for deletion; articles are kept if they are about a notable topic, even if they may not have enough information currently. You may find consensus that this page and its list is unwarranted, but the rationale should be based on appropriate deletion argument after performing a WP:BEFORE search, not the current state of the article. If you still believe that Knight or Dame of St Andrew is an inappropriate article, you should merge it to Order of Barbados or nominate it for deletion at WP:AfD. —Ost (talk) 02:43, 29 April 2021 (UTC)

@AmirahBreen: I used {{uw-delete1}} from WP:TWINKLE, which specifies that it is for "Removal of content, blanking". I am sorry that this template may not have wholly fit this scenario, though I also don't think it's completely inappropriate, as one can interpret that message as indicating that the edit summary should adequately explain why a page was blanked rather than using another venues to address the concerns. I provided my own message at the end of the template message to further explain the rationale, though admittedly I glossed over the template text and apologize if it caused offense. —Ost (talk) 23:28, 18 June 2021 (UTC)

Draft:List of Atlas LV3B launches

Hi. I noticed you recently commented on List of Atlas LV3B launches. As was diccussed a few months ago, any list with no where else to put the information, important rocket, or rocket with over 10 launches (Atlas LV3B is important because it was the first American rocket to put a human in space) should have it's own, seperate list. There is an attribution on the talk page.

I did not see the Talk page attribution; thanks for pointing that out. I don't know anything about previous discussions about whether this deserves a standalone list, but I don't think that the Atlas LV-3B is too long that it could not include the list in it. —Ost (talk) 06:09, 10 July 2021 (UTC)

Removing a bad redirect

Apparently I need some training. There were two redirects pointing to the wrong archaeological site. I tried to fix that by blanking them. Apparently that is not the official way to go. :-) So what IS the official way. @Ploversegg:To address the links, the best approach would be to them to correct targets, but if there is no good target and you don't believe that the topics are encyclopedic, you may nominate them for discussion at Redirects for Discussion, subset of WP:XfD. There are also scenarios where you could tag pages for proposed deletion (PROD) or speedy deletion, but PROD isn't applicable for redirects and I don't believe that these redirects meet the criteria for speedy deletion. —Ost (talk) 01:33, 17 September 2021 (UTC)

@WikiIsKnowledge: Pages may only be deleted by administrators, so there are deletion processes that must be used to delete a page. However, it is not generally incorrect or meaningless to have a redirect from a name to another relative; redirects have many uses besides synonyms. In this case, consensus determined Eleanor was not independently notable and that the page should be redirected to Maria's as a {{R from relative}}. This lets people searching for Eleonore von Trapp be taken to Maria's page, where they can learn that she is her daughter. —Ost (talk) 01:30, 1 October 2021 (UTC)

Bare URLs

Hi Ost316 I was pleased to see you using Citation bot to process your list User:Ost316/Barelink articles. Great to see someone else using the bot for this task, and to see the high cleanup rate the bot is achieving on those articles.

@BrownHairedGirl: Thanks for the message. I think that I may have learned about using userpages from your edits with the bot, so I probably should have been thanking you. I also owe someone else thanks for noting this search in a discussion that I came across. I bookmarked the link, as the search should find articles with bare links, sorted by the time that they were last edited. There's probably a better way to construct the list from the search, but copy and paste it into Excel and filter for the lines with containing a hyperlink to get the page links. —Ost (talk) 21:14, 22 November 2021 (UTC)

Sorry for a slow reply.

That looks like a handily lightweight way of finding bare URL articles. Of course, recent edits doesn't necessarily mean recently added bare URLs, but its probably gonna catch quite a few.

To construct lists from searches, I do the search in WP:AWB, where I can directly save it as a list. Much simpler than using a spreadsheet. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 23:47, 1 December 2021 (UTC)

removal of White Canadians

Hi Ost, thanks for explaining the reversion related to the "White Canadian" re-direct. I understand why you did it. My underlying concern is that the re-direct, and more generally the European Canadians page that it links to, because both them seem to be based on the idea that all Canadians of European descent are "white". The European Canadians page seems to me to be trying to create a concept of "European Canadians" as an ethnic group (i.e. whites), that does not really exist. There's no doubt that some Canadians continue to identify with their ethnic or national origins from Europe (eg. Scots Canadians, Italian Canadians), but I don't think there's any basis for suggesting that some Canadians identify as "European Canadians". At least, I've never met anyone who does. As well, there is an implicit assumption that European Canadians are whites. That ignores the fact that Europe as a whole is heterogenous, and not "racially pure", which this automatic identification between "White Canadians" and "European Canadians" seems to suggest. I don't know what to do about it, however. I broke the redirect because I found it being used in the article on Racism in Canada in a way that suggested White Canadians and European Canadians are one and the same. @Mr Serjeant Buzfuz: Thank you for understanding why I reverted your change, as it was largely procedural so we didn't have a blank page. I understand your concerns, but I'm not sure what the best solution would be. My best suggestion for the redirect is to nominate it at Redirects for Discussion to try to get consensus. If you want a broader discussion about European Canadians, you should start a discussion on Talk:European Canadians or create a Request for Comment. I don't think it matters if someone self-defines themselves as "European Canadian", though, as the concept can be appropriate even if the term is not commonly used. Also, keep in mind that a redirect does not have to be a synonym; it can be used as for related words and perhaps "White Canadian" is considered a subset of "European Canadian" (though that is probably debatable, too). —Ost (talk) 14:13, 26 April 2022 (UTC)

Thanks for the suggestions. Busy in real life right now, but will try something when I have more time. The problem I have with the Euro Canadian page is that there are no cites demonstrating that there are, in fact, Canadians who identify themselves as Euro Canadians. The page seems me to be trying to use WP to develop the concept, with an underlying tone of “we’re talking about whites but can’t say that”, rather than record an actual ethnic grouping. I’d have no problem with a page about historical immigration trends from Europe to Canada, because that’s objective and data based. Mr Serjeant Buzfuz (talk) 15:03, 26 April 2022 (UTC)

@JarrahTree: Sorry. I tried the nonexistent {{sailboat-stub}} and {{yacht-stub}} based on terminology on the pages, but I didn't consider "sailing". Never apologise - your response is positive - unfortunately I tend to be a talk page tagger rather than tweaker of redirects etc - as to the terminology - no one has ever gone to the trouble to delineate the synonyms of the sailboat/yacht/sailing - and what determines what, not that I have seen. About the blank page of Laziz Rustamov

Hello friend,

You left me a message on my talk page regarding the blank page of Laziz Rustamov. Let me explain the reason of deleting all info from that page. First of all, Laziz Rustamov is a name of a model. But the page under this naming was used as a redirect page for a TV show in which one of its seasons he starred. So for an unexperienced user, when they want to read about Laziz Rustamov they will be redirected to the page of the TV show which is misleading. And it is unethical as well using the name of human to promote the tv show. So I didn't delete the whole page but removed the redirection from Laziz Rustamov to TV show, so other users with more info about him may add it further so the article will be in a standard form of 'article about person'. I request you to delete whole page so his name gets empty for future contributors to create article about him without confusion.

I hope I could explain. And I didn't know that leaving blank pages are not good. So you helped me to learn something new today. Day by day I am getting more experienced on Wikipedia. Thank you so much for your help. I appreciate that. And please do not get offended if my text sounds rude. I wrote it in a friendly manner trying to make it sound informative. Thank you so much. @Lostinniagarafalls: Thank you for your explanation. I don't make policy and there are processes for deletion. If you want this page deleted, please use the WP:RfD process. I disagree that having a person's name redirect to a work that they're in is unethical. I understand that it may be misleading, but redirects are often pointed to a person's work if there is not other encyclopedic content about them; the redirect may be better categorized to illustrate that. There may be a better target for this redirect or the person may warrant a page, but that content should generally be created before deleting and replacing a redirect. Anyone can edit a redirect, so having one is not prohibitive to creating content at that title. —Ost (talk) 08:05, 1 June 2022 (UTC)

Need your help

Hello my friend,

I again need your help. You previously helped me explaining redirect issue on Laziz Rustamov. Now I need your instructions for the page Deniz Miyas. There is a tag telling that most of the quotes are subject of the person only. So after reading about that tag I sorted out the references, updated the page. Now I don't know whether I can remove that tag now or it should stay. Can you please look on that page and remove it in case if it is OK. I just didn't want to act but ask from more experienced user like you. So there won't be problem further.

@Lostinniagarafalls: My best suggestions would be to discuss it with the user that added the tag (User:Styyx) or to start a discussion about it on Talk:Deniz Miyas. Since you did not add any sources after they tagged Deniz Miyas, I suspect that they still have the same concerns. I believe that their rationale for tagging is that many of the references may not support notability because they are not from independent sources. You may have removed the primary sources, but the I think that they are questioning the others as well. —Ost (talk) 18:59, 2 June 2022 (UTC)

I wouldn't object the removal of the tag as I'll soon send this and some other creations of this user to AfD. I have a serious UPE/COI concern as some articles were created on the Turkish Wikipedia a few months back by confirmed UPE's and are now deleted. @GAIKOF99: You can tag links with {{dead link}}, but should let the link remain unless you have a replacement to validate the information. The site should still be attributed for providing the cited information, even if it is not available. A single-sentence article should've been redirected, not moved to draftspace

Hello. If you come across another instance of this happening, please just re-redirect the article. One sentence with nothing else of note is not worth considering as a serious start to an article. I honestly believed for a second, until I saw from your contributions you handle this kind of content regularly, that you had simply moved the "article" out of the way to be the "new" redirect creator. Even if not your intention, it really does look like that (now that somebody else has created an article on top of your redirect) and it should have been redirected. Thanks. @Ss112: I apologize if you felt that I was trying to take credit for your creation of the redirect and believe you can request a WP:HISTMERGE with the draft if you think it is necessary; I was only trying to address the Drill Music in Zion and Drill Music In Zion having the same, unreferenced sentence. If the content was created at the Draft and moved over, it would have retained your history of the original redirect creation. The redirect was relatively new and I restored it after the move to draft (as opposed to having it speedily deleted, as the Draftify script would normally do), which includes the edit summary that the page was moved if anyone wanted to view who created the original redirect. I believe in teaching new editors how to work on Wikipedia and believe that moving articles to Draft and pointing to the WP:AfC process fosters that for some. I also disagree that one sentence is not worth considering a start to an article; new editors are unaware of the policy and what is worthy of an article. Please let me know if there is a policy that I'm unaware of that shows my actions as inappropriate, otherwise I will continue to handle these on a case-by-case basis. I will try to keep your concerns in mind, though, especially if the edit is from an IP with few edits. If you think this warrants further discussion, it may be worth discussing it on the pages that dictate when and how a Draft gets deleted, as they may want to include doing a histmerge before deleting if there is redirect history before the page was moved to draft. —Ost (talk) 19:24, 1 July 2022 (UTC)
