I saw you are the one that most often responds to portal questions so I thought I would just ask you. How long does a portal need to be receiving regular updates before it can be submitted as a featured portal? Portal:United States hadn't been updated for a while and I am in the process of updating it and have gotten positive results from several of the US related projects to submit content on a regular basis so within the next month or so we should have it set and be on a regular schedule. if you have any other advice for this portal that would be greatly appreciated as well. I think for the most part the portal is solid it just needs some updated content but I am rather new to portal stuff so Im not 100% sure of the requirements. --Kumioko (talk) 15:45, 19 January 2011 (UTC)

Hi, you don't need to worry about protecting images on ITN, because Template:In the news is cascade protected, so anything transcluded onto it (like images or templates) is automatically full protected, but is unprotected as soon as it's removed. Disruptive Editing by Blake1960

semi-protection of Wall-Mart

Hi, in September 2010 you semi-protected the Wall-Mart article, which is fine by me. However, it means that nobody but administrators can move the article. As the official company name is Wallmart since 2008, there are several requests on the talk page for a switch move, so Wallmart becomes the main article address, while Wall-Mart becomes an alias reference. Currently it's the other way around.

Perhaps you could unprotect it, do the move and then re-protect it? I'm sure the regular editors then will clean it up accordingly.

Wrong Walmart...

Hi again! Thanks for that re-direct. Unfortunately, it was the wrong one, because I made a mistake, which probably confused you. The old company name and the current article name is Wal-Mart (with one "l", not Wall-Mart with two, which I wrote). The article name should be Walmart (one "l" and without a hyphen), as that's how the company writes its name since 2008.

What confused things, is that my two misspellings (Wall-Mart and Wallmart) already exist as redirects to Wal-Mart, Obviously, the Wall-Mart redirect isn't semi-protected, as you pointed out, but Wal-Mart is.

So, if you could unprotect Wal-Mart and then move the article to Walmart (and then semi-protect it again, if you want), that would be great. If you let me know when it's done, I'll sort out the old redirects and change the beginning of the article to reflect the article name.

Help for Portal:Bulgarian Empire

Greetings! I have seen on the talk page of WikiProject Portals that you are willing to provide assistance for Portals. I would like to help me a bit with a portal, if you have time and willingness.

I have created Portal:Bulgarian Empire long time ago and since I have no skills in making portals, I am sure it needs a lot of reworking in order to get a proper look... Can you take a look through it and improve whatever you find inappropriate or badly done and also improve the general layout and colours? Also, probably it would be better to add a "Selected biography" section, where I will move the biographies from "Selected article" and insert new ones. Thank you very much for the quick answer. My problem, however, is that I just don't know how to do the things. I know that the box at the top is misplaced but I have no idea how to fix it. You can see, for example, that in the archive of the "Selected Articles" the second one is empty but when I tried to fill it there were problems...
As for the other suggestions, I will make them up to 20 but there are simply not enough featured articles for all. And there is not a single featured picture too... Do you think that if I ask for a peer review someone will make all that? Usually the reviewer only says what has to be done but in this case I am unable to do it. SPI request filed in good faith, please redact your comments suggesting otherwise

Please take a look at the response to your comments from me and from another user at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet_investigations/NoCal100. I am a longtime Wikipedia editor and I edit under my own real-life identity, so I don't like to have unpleasant allegations about me just sit there unanswered. I am not in the habit of filing frivolous SPI as a weapon in content disputes, but I hope I would file one against a suspect user on my own side of a content argument, if a new account showed up brandishing arguments of someone recently banned. You mention my content disagreement with Red Stone Arsenal at Start-up Nation, so let me call your attention to my praise of Gilabrand and GabrielF there who were on the opposite side of the dispute from me. Far from trying to run them off Wikipedia, I expressed gratitude and admiration for their hard work and forbearance. [1][2][3][4] betsythedevine (talk) 12:19, 25 May 2011 (UTC)

Your response on my talk page explains why you considered the SPI "meritless." I have no complaint against your calling it "meritless," although the blocked account I thought was the same as Red Stone Arsenal is Rym Torch for whom behavioral not checkuser evidence was definitive.[5] My complaint is instead the over-the-top allegation about my motivation you publicly offered to account for my not knowing enough to search the SPI archive for previous cases involving Red Stone Arsenal: "Since Red Stone Arsenal and you have opposing POV at Start-up Nation, I really believe that you use the sockpuppetry case to try and assassinate his character." I feel that leaving such a comment on my talk page does more to "assasinate" my character than the SPI that you object to and I would like you to redact that over-the-top PA from my talk page. I have an opposing POV with lots of people at lots of articles; if I went around filing fake SPIs as a way to blacken people's characters, I would be a lot more familiar with SPI methods than I am. betsythedevine (talk) 19:27, 25 May 2011 (UTC)
I don't see where OU accused you of attempted character assassination, which would be a pretty serious charge. As you are in a content dispute with the other editor, and filing a sockpuppet report on the editor you are in a dispute with, it could possibly be viewed as an attempt to intimidate another editor into conceding in the dispute, or abandoning it. On the other hand, if you sought advice beforehand and was encouraged by HelloAnnyong as suggested by RolandR, then you can't be faulted for proposing the investigation, and I can't agree that your request was frivolous, I think your reasoning was plausible when you described the behavior that led to your report. I would take your word that you were unaware of the prior investigations, SPI can be overwhelming to someone who isn't used to it (it was to me when I first used it). One last thing to note, is that it is your choice to disclose your real life identity, and when you do so you have the added inconvenience of having your on-wiki behavior tied to your real life identity. That means that at times you will have unpleasant allegations against you, it's inevitable. That's also why most editors (myself included) choose to edit the project anonymously. You just missed it, Atama; easy enough to do, given that the exchanges now span four pages: here, the SPI, Betsy's talk, and now, since Ohana brought it there, AN/I. In his first entry to Betsy's talk page, Ohana wrote, "Since Red Stone Arsenal and you have opposing POV at Start-up Nation, I really believe that you use the sockpuppetry case to try and assassinate his character. Therefore, I am cautioning you not to abuse the process and use SPI as a venue to silence editors with other POVs." @Ohana: Hi. I'm not sure whether you'd noticed, but I re-opened the AN/I thread. I apologize for not informing you of that earlier; it was careless not to, so sorry for that... Also, I'd like to just reassure you that despite some of the harsh remarks that have been made there, that's just so much hot air. People get their knickers in a twist over inflammatory words, but no one is interested in finding fault with you in any negative or morally judging sense. Betsy made a mistake in not knowing how to search for a pre-existing case. In your understandable frustration you made a mistake about her motives and growled when it wasn't called for. This is no big deal in itself; it only becomes one if those remarks stick around for opponents to cite for the next five years, whenever she files an SPI that someone doesn't like. If you don't think that will occur, btw, then you can feel thankful that you're not interested in editing articles that touch on Mideast politics. I can tell you with near 100% certainty that it will, if the comments aren't at least struck through. That's the reason I felt I had to re-open the thread: It's just not right that she should have to live with that albatross around her neck when she only did what we all should do, try to help keep the socks from jamming up the gears here.
The conflict is pretty ironic, really: You and betsy are actually very much committed to the same goal. You only fell afoul of one another, as I see it, because the sharp spike in throwaway accounts that we've seen in the I/P area recently has put everyone's nerves rather on edge, and caused a predictable collision. Specifically, I mean a collision between the actions of editors in trying to deal with that influx and the need for checkusers to keep the volume manageable and to respond to the corresponding spike in reports that return a "not related" outcome. I wonder if you're aware, though, that some days in the Israel/Palestine topic area, it honestly looks like one out every four or five editors one encounters are socks, and that around half of those look almost precisely like Red Stone Arsenal in their contribution history? It's just extremely frustrating, and we're frankly at a loss to know how to address the problem.
Sorry to post a novel here; delete it at will, of course; it's your talk page. But I really hope you'll accept the possibility that this drama really was just the unfortunate result of mutual frustration and misunderstanding, and will be able to de-escalate this. I hope it won't seem silly for me to say so, but if you're not married, I can assure you in all sober earnest that it would be a great chance to hone a very necessary skill for that blessed state. ;-) Please do look in at AN/I, if you can do so without getting knots in your middle. I admire the fact that you are trying to protect new users from being slapped with sockpuppeting allegations -- it is an unfriendly process to subject someone to, and no way to be introduced to Wikipedia. And I also think that we sometimes are too eager to challenge and block new users.
Please reconsider the few harsh words you said to betsy. She merits assumption of good faith, as do all respected contributors. If we are rude to one another, and contributing becomes painful, we will lose our thoughtful and experienced and devoted users - even more worrying than losing new users.

Ocean acidification misunderstandings with chemistry, carbon, and the usage of organic and inorganic ...

How do I get an editor who understands the difference between organic (carbon in molecule) and inorganic in Chemistry, and "organic" and inorganic"'s other current means in the article Ocean acidification. Two editors are editing the article inaccurately to say "inorganic carbon cycle", which is impossible as a carbon cycle would have carbon in some molecules. Is there a list of editors to call-in who understand this? If you don't know, do you know who might?

Hi, Ohana. I wanted to let you know that the AN/I thread is likely to roll to archives or get hatted very soon. I realize you've been staying away for a reason; this can't have been pleasant. But please consider that besides the approximately 15 regular editors who've wished you'd do so, you've also had half a dozen admins, at least, who've suggested you'd do well to strike through your comments, admit your mistake, or both. One of those, User:Sj, aka Samuel Klein, is also an elected member of the the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees, one of the most highly-trusted persons on the project. Besides his AN/I posts, he even took the extra step of posting here, to your talk, to ask if you'd be willing to apologize.

It's hard to publicly step up and admit it when you've been wrong, as I know all too well from my own experience. Much easier to just keep your head down and hope the problem will go away. But I'd respectfully suggest that you would gain greater respect from the community by addressing the issue directly, as you've been asked to do, at the soon-to-be-closed AN/I thread, before you lose your chance. And although Fences & Windows has now added an exculpatory passage to the SPI request thread that Betsy initiated, it would also be seen as a commendable response to strike-through your unfortunate comments, as well. Everyone understands what happened; ignoring that until the thread rolls to archives isn't going to change that. I put up an entry on this webpage and a user is deleting it for no reason. She isn't discussing the reasons why on the discussion board but putting up useless comments about how she "likes socks". Well, the category is for the individual's religion. She is an atheist. The categories are there to guide the encyclopaedia to provide information to the public. This allows people to reference categories. Particularly relevant in politics. Among a number of things is to allow people to do searches. I found this entry because of listening to the radio and there is a religion in politics debate. I wanted to know who is an atheist in the debate and who is religious. Also Euthanasia is a big issue and as health minister it is good to know what religion she is. It only adds to the encyclopaedia not detracting from it. Help Reverting a Merge Done In Direct Opposition to Results of Editor Discussion

Hi,

I am hoping you can either help me or point me to a place where I can seek help.

Recently, the proposal to merge Ford Focus BEV with Ford Focus (third generation) was rejected due to lack of editor consensus. The related discussion can be found here.

Directly defying the results of this discussion, User:OSX merged the articles here.

Note that OSX was warned that he should not merge the articles in this discussion.

I cannot see how to revert OSX's merger. Could you help me with this? Also, I think that it would be appropriate for an admin to chastise OSX and warn him against similar actions in the future. How should I proceed?

I was curious why you removed the sun in Sachs Harbour? It's listed in the source. Also I'm not sure that it's a good idea to remove the link to the calculation information as it better shows the dates the information was collected. Cheers. The sun sets about the middle of November and rises in the last week of January so there would be little available sun. I assumed that they used a Campbell–Stokes recorder like the one we had. During the week or so following and preceding sunrise/sunset the sun is so low in the sky that even if conditions are perfect it rarely makes a burn. A few clouds will ensure that there is no burn, as will a heavy fall of Diamond dust. However, the major problem is frost on the balls. They can be cleaned off but will frost up very quickly and the sun has to burn the frost off before it can burn the card. So for December it would be safe to put 0. For the others I usually just put n/a as it isn't really missing but it wouldn't matter. CambridgeBayWeather (talk) 05:39, 19 June 2011 (UTC)

That's odd, there is only 24 years worth of data. I can't recall when the station opened there but it certainly was before 1976. I do know that at some point the weather station was moved from one location to the airport and that may be the reason there is no prior data. Originally the sun was part of the 1971-2000 data that's why it got put into the articles. Environment Canada removed it at some point. Now if they would just fix the major and very obvious errors. CambridgeBayWeather (talk) 16:03, 22 June 2011 (UTC)
It appears that Kugluktuk weather opened in 1927 or so. The original station was on the town side of the hill and they moved in the 1970s around the hill to the new airport and decided that the distance was too far for continuous weather records. Blocks are preventative, not punitive

One of the most misleading statements on WP. Blocks are, by definition, punitive. Action A will result in a block (i.e. violation of 3RR). They are punitive. However, their goal is to prevent future problems. In this vein, I proposed a 1-minute block. It permanently shows delta that his actions are noted and are not acceptable. It also permanently logs this community disapproval of his actions without being unduly harsh. By showing that level of commitment, future blocks would be easier to initiate and, since he knows this, he is less likely to lapse into recidivism. — BQZip01 — talk 22:29, 20 June 2011 (UTC)
