First, it is a 2nd Infantry Regiment history and therefore anything in the history that reads the Regiment refers directly to the 2nd Infantry Regiment and thus the R should be capitalized. This goes for the battalion also when it is used in context to a specific battalion. Next, Distinctive Unit Insignia is a 3 word name and therefore all three words should be capitalized. The same should hold true for Coat of Arms. The way that the section on the Distinctive Unit Insignia and Coat of Arms was written is the way the Institute of Heraldry presented it but I guess you feel that your way is better. It was Indian outrages not Indians. The Regiment (-) means that not the entire regiment was present, it is not a mistake. It was/is a common reference to not an entire unit begin involved. In this instance Motorized is capitalized because it is part of a name. If after you review what I have presented and see that I am correct I ask that you correct what you have changed. I'm positive about the non-numbering of divisional aviation brigades outside of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), which has two (101st and 159th). I've discussed this on numerous occasions with Ned Bedessem, the Aviation historian and force structure expert at the US Army Center of Military History (CMH), Fort McNair, Washington, DC. It is an ongoing problem he faces - people erroneously write up what they think their unit should be called, or what they would like to call it, rather than what it really is. Because bad information is so widespread, you'll find many references to that bad information throughout the web and on official websites, where they should know better. If you wish, I can put you in contact with Ned and he can confirm that, other than in the 101st, divisional aviation brigades aren't numbered. A similar situation existed in the Army prior to the 2005 reorganization of divisions into the "modular" structure. A division's field artillery battalions were grouped under what was known as "Division Artillery," which did not have a number, and fortunately people didn't try to assign numbers to it. A problem with assigning the same number as the division is that there would be duplicates. During the Vietnam War there was very large (27,000-man) separate brigade with the designation of 1st Aviation Brigade. In the post-war years the designation was assigned to Fort Rucker, AL, as a schoolhouse unit. But if a division's aviation brigade carried the same number as the division, what would the brigades be numbered in these units? 1st Infantry Division 1st Armored Division 1st Cavalry Division Perhaps it was with this in mind that the Army simply went with Combat Aviation Brigade, XXth Division. As for Ned, he just smiles and shakes his head, knowing that people have done this sort of thing for years and will continue to do so, no matter what guidance the CMH puts out.

If they were used in a sentence such as, the coat of arms is part of heraldry, it wouldn't be capatilized. Your wat is like saying that John James Jones only the J in John is capitalized. The Style manual does not seem to differentiate between sentence case & proper nouns. The unit designations for each section are proper nouns in that context. In the paragraph text they are not- the unit is a "Battlefield Surveillance Brigade" but it conducts battlefield surveillance; ditto "Information Operations" etc... I'd appreciate help cleaning up areas where the terms are not correct for proper nouns, but in quotes form the regulation and the section headers I believe I am correct. What are your thoughts?
