Nomination of Peace and violence in Judaism for deletion

A discussion has begun about whether the article Peace and violence in Judaism, which you created or to which you contributed, should be deleted. While contributions are welcome, an article may be deleted if it is inconsistent with Wikipedia policies and guidelines for inclusion, explained in the deletion policy.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Peace and violence in Judaism until a consensus is reached, and you are welcome to contribute to the discussion.

You may edit the article during the discussion, including to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion template from the top of the article. The Resident Anthropologist (talk) 05:44, 9 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Violence and peace in Islam requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an article with no content whatsoever, or whose contents consist only of external links, a "See also" section, book references, category tags, template tags, interwiki links, a rephrasing of the title, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content. You may wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag - if no such tag exists then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hangon tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. re your edit on Judaism and violence

I am quoting here a few lines that are very relevant to your article:

There are three forms of obligatory wars: against the seven Canaaanite nations, against Alamalek, and agianst a nation that has launched an attack. The first two forms are no longer relevant. The seven Canaanite nations no longer exist and the command to destroy them cannot be transferred to other nations... However, the third form, against a nation that has launched an attack, remains relevant. Jews are commanded to defend themselves as part of the Mitzvah to preserve life.... before attacking a city an offer of peace must be extended. According to Maimonides, "We are enjoined that if we wage war on them we are to make a covenant with them to spare their lives ...

I'm alarmed by your comment at Talk:Atheism. That's a serious accusation to be throwing around. --Tryptofish (talk) 23:21, 20 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yeshu

Noleander, when you remove material you need to use some common sense. You recently removed material about the Talmud that helps explain a dearth of references to Jesus. It is true that there was a citation tag there but to be honest, I would have just removed the citation tag. Surely you know some people rack up edits by adding citation tags on almost every sntence. The fact is, most if not all of the bullet points you removed are all common knowledge and provide important contextual information about the Talmud. If you wish to argue that the material should not be presented as a polemic or argument, well, okay, I would agree with that. But in an article on Yeshu where much of the discussion concerned the Talmud, a link to the Talmud article is not enough. We really ought to have a brief paragraph providing important contextual information about the Talmud to help casual readers understand why there is a great deal of debate as to whether Jesus is mentioned in the Talmud at all, and why the passages some people claim refer to Jesus are - in a 63 volume work - pretty scant.

Why not consider taking those bullet points and rewriting them into such a paragraph? Not an argument, just important contextual information That would make for a real improvement. We should as a rule be loathe to remove from the encyclopedia relevant content. What you removed was not at all controversial, it does not violate NPOV.The facts are so commonly known (to anyone who knows anything about Judaism or Jewish history that it seems silly to ask for citations - they could come from any book on Jewish history or any introduction to the Talmud, it is like asking for a citation for the fact that George VI was succeded by Elizabeth II.

Controversial material without citations should indeed go, after a reasonable time. But if the material is informative and NOT controversial, why not look for a more appropriate way to keep it in the article? I am trying to give you general constructive advice. Herem

Looking over your work (I think it's yours) in the "Peace and war in Judaism" article on herem, you seem to have nailed most aspects of the issue (and what a puzzling issue it is!). I'm none too experienced and was curious if importing large quantities of an article into another is frowned upon. It's all good stuff and would save a great deal of time. Sol (talk) 03:45, 5 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks for your in-depth answer. I wanted to double check that there wasn't some style guideline I'd overlooked and I appreciate the detailed response. I'm very pleased it's possible to import the material into the herem article. I'll give it a shot later on and please let me know if there's something I've fumbled. On the topic of the rename, I agree. I'd hate for someone to type in "herem" while researching Jewish ecclesiastic punishments and think that excommunication also included complete destruction! "Herem (wars of extermination)" best describes the context I've seen it in, let's try it out on talk. Sol (talk) 03:52, 6 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

And a thank you to you for promoting a collegial atmosphere - also something we can use more of here.--Kubigula (talk) 04:02, 6 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
