Sea Shepherd images

Hi, I undid one of your recent addition of an image to the article on Paul Watson. As you can see on the description page, the image is tagged for deletion because it is a copyright violation. There are a lot of other Sea Shepherd images which are also on commons and are tagged to be deleted, so just make sure you look at the description first to be sure the images are not copyright violations. It is a weird situation from my understanding. Basically, IMDB is typically good as in general info is usually OK but there is some user submitted content. SSCS (the other source) on the other hand is a primary source that links to should be limited since they are exceptionally promotional and admittedly not accurate. The edit also appeared to give it some prominence weight wise (due to the rest of the section being not filled in). The revert may have been a little knee jerky on my end. I actually was thinking about ways to incorporate your edit while poking around other pages when you messaged. Since I haven't seen the documentary, is it about Watson or is it about SSCS? I feel like we need to be extra careful with how it is done so it doesn't pop out as a "Hey, go look at this!". I am so on the fence about it that I won't revert if you stick it back in. Remove the SSCS link though. It might be better in the SSCS article but need to look into it more. Go for it. The primary source you provided might be unduly self serving but it is much better then the SSCS site. It also seems t be about Watson more than SSCS. Independent coverage would be preferred (we need to find some sooner or later) but put it back in if there is a way to do it (notability impacts article creation not content if anyone else gives you a hard time). Just a random thought. On one of the pages it mentions that he stopped sealing in the British Isles. I never heard of that so am just wondering what it is about. I'll do some googling and see what is out there.Cptnono (talk) 15:01, 25 January 2010 (UTC)
We actually built a pretty comprehensive history. It just got ripped out since it was too big and moved to a new specific page for the different operations since it was so bloated (Sea Shepherd Conservation Society operations). A summary is still needed at the main SSCS page but I was waiting for all of the hub bub around the Ady Gil to die down and got sidetracked on local sports. For the sake of transparency, I am not a fan of the group. If you see nay neutrality issues or anything lacking feel free to chime in.Cptnono (talk) 15:12, 25 January 2010 (UTC)

Kaŝtankolora pasero on the Esperanto Wikipedia

Can you check the caption for the image of a nest at eo:Kaŝtankolora pasero? It should say that they are Grey-headed Social-weaver nests, like Chestnut Sparrow, but I don't think it does. (I found your page at the history page for the Esperanto Wikipedia's sparrow article). —innotata 13:09, 26 April 2010 (UTC)

Does this clear it up: Can you check the caption for the image of a nest? It should say that it is not a nest of a Chestnut Sparrow, but a nest of a different bird that sparrows sometimes use. —innotata 17:43, 26 April 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, we sometimes learn the same thing about English, though generally we learn that there are "long" and "short" a, e, i, o, oo, u, which isn't exactly right either. People tend to think of vowels as being letters rather than sounds. — kwami (talk) 20:49, 19 June 2010 (UTC)

Borgesian project (your question)

Hi! because... The seemingly boundless nature of Wikipedia is somehow amazing. Not just the number of articles, which could perhaps reach a limit: User:Emijrp/All human knowledge, but also the number of versions each article can have. Your deletion

As a new user, I am surprised you deleted a perfectly valid image for the article. I was not aware that the article had too many pictures according to the Wikipedia rules. At first sight it looked like an arbitrary decision according to your personal preferences. I wish in cases like this, that a consensus were used instead. Sorry if my reversion seemed a bit harsh, and welcome to Wikipedia :) It looked a little out of place there, and while I agree that a picture of Zamenhof would be nice for the article, in my opinion it'd make the article a bit crowded with pics. Thank you for your changes to Norman Heathcote and for transferring and categorising the various associated files. I'd forgotten about them falling out of copyright and I see what you have done is just what was needed. Years ago some files I uploaded to enwp were transferred to Commons in a highly unsatisfactory manner so it is good that our standards have improved (or maybe it is just that someone else did the old transfers!). Animal Equality videos

Please quit placing videos from the anumalequality youtube channel to Wikipedia articles. Besides being original research, these videos violate WP:SOAPBOX and WP:NPOV. Further, you seem to be trying to hide the videos on articles by having misleading captions. And your drive-by method of adding them demonstrates no interest in the article topics but rather an interest in sharing these videos. General notes
Recent additions
  • Site validation has been tightened. Previously, only the language code and project name had to be valid - now, they must be a valid combination (i.e. en.wikiversity exists, and so is valid, but sco.wikiversity is not valid, because no such wiki exists).
  • When the global watchlist feed is loading, an OOUI widget will be shown, rather than an animated gif.
  • An option has been added to no longer group edits to the same page. For now, this isn't very useful, since metadata for the edits (editor, summary, tags, etc.) are not yet shown, but they will be soon. Until then, ungrouped edits are treated the same as pages with only 1 edit - the minor and bot flags are displayed if applicable. If edits are grouped, the minor and bot flags are only shown if they apply to all of the edits.
Upcoming changes
  • Starting with version 5.0, there will be an option at the settings page to switch to and from a "stable" version of the script. When activated, the script import in your global.js should be replaced, and then the page refreshed with the new script loaded. The stable script will live at m:User:DannyS712/Global watchlist/stable.js, and will be updated with each full release. Otherwise, it shouldn't be edited, providing a version that is less prone to bugs as the script is developed.
Announcements
  • WARNING: Starting with version 5.1, the option to mark the pages of a site as seen be implemented using the entirewatchlist API option, rather than manually listing the titles. This is being done to simplify the implementation code. This will result in the same functionality as marking all pages as seen via Special:Watchlist (i.e. even if the page isn't visible due to your filter choices, it will still be marked as seen). If you would like to keep using the current method for a while, please switch to the stable branch.

ArbCom 2019 election voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2019 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 on Monday, 2 December 2019. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

  • I am investigating adding more context to each entry that is shown (such as the edit summaries, tags, patrol marks, the user who made the edit, etc.). Is there any desire for such additions? If so, what should be added first, and what is a low priority? Please leave feedback on the relevant phabricator task, phab:T238300.
Recent additions
  • Site validation has been overhauled. Rather than hard-coding a list of valid sites, users will be able to watch any site where they have an attached local user account. If a site is rejected as invalid, please ensure that there is indeed a local account attached to your global account.
  • Users will now be alerted regarding the results of attempting to update their settings.
  • Live updates have been added - when activated, the script will refresh in the background, and then load the new feed, every 7.5 seconds. In the future, this frequency may be configurable.
  • OOUI icons have been added to most buttons.
  • There is now an option to eliminate the confirmation dialog when marking all sites as seen.
Announcements
  • WARNING: Starting with version 6.1, site aliases currently used when saving settings will be removed, and only sites in the form of `lang.project` will be accepted.
  • As noted in the last update, marking a site as seen now uses entirewatchlist, which means that any changes to watched pages between when the watchlist was loaded and when the site was "marked as seen" may be ignored.

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at the English Wikipedia.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Global watchlist - Update 4

Recent additions
  • A new "fast" mode has been introduced. When used, the watchlist serves as just a list of pages that have been modified, and no longer includes context about the edits themselves.
  • More information has been added to entries. When edits are not grouped by page, or when there is only 1 edit to a page, minor and bot flags are shown, as well as the user who made the edit, the summary used, and any tags that were applied. When multiple entries are grouped, bot and minor flags are only shown if all of the grouped edits were made by bots or where marked as minor. If only 1 user edited the page, that user's name is still shown, but no summaries or tags are included.
  • All watchlists are now fetched in parallel, rather than in series, greatly reducing load time.
Technical notes
  • Most of the source code is now annotated with jsdoc notes, allowing others to more clearly understand and review the code.
  • I will be looking into creating guidelines to let others contribute to the script; see phab:T238298.
Translations
  • There is now proper qqq documentation for translations. Translation takes place at m:User:DannyS712/Global watchlist/Translate, and help is appreciated.
  • Newly translated messages are added to the script when I notice them; if you have translated messages that aren't showing up, please let me know at m:User talk:DannyS712.
Next release

Version 7.0 was just finalized for the development and stable branches of the script.

Requesting small help

I was looking for some small help. I created an article en:Kithaab(French fr:Kithaab/Spanish es:Kithaab/de:Kithaab) -a play about women rights issues- which has been copy edited and is ready for translation in various languages.

Portuguese is one of top 9 most spoken global languages. Out of first 9 languages the article is already got translated in 6 of them, but Portuguese language Wikipedia (and Russian & Chinese too) are remaining to get article Kithaab translated in. Translating in Portuguese will also help translating in other global languages.

Looking for your possible help in translating the article en:Kithaab to your Portuguese language Wikipedia. If you are unable to spare time yourself then may be you like to refer the same to some other translator.

  • The results for each site, as well as the list of sites without changes, can be collapsed; the list of sites without changes starts collapsed.
  • When the username associated with an edit has been hidden (either via revision deletion or suppression) this is now properly shown in the output, rather than showing "undefined".
  • Links to view changes open in new tabs.
  • When marking a site (or all sites) as seen, only changes made prior to the watchlist loading will be marked as seen, so that any changes since then are not missed.
  • There is now a help link in the upper right hand corner that links to m:User:DannyS712/Global watchlist, though it doesn't have the normal help icon.

As I noted in the last issue, I received a grant from the WMF to develop the global watchlist script into an extension. That extension has now been deployed on Meta. Visit m:Special:GlobalWatchlistSettings to get started.

I do not plan on any further developments being made to the user script. I have released version 9.1.0 to both the dev and stable versions, which includes a notification about the extension being available when you use the user script. You can dismiss the notification, and the script still works, but it will no longer be maintained.

Those interested in providing feedback for the extension should use the phabricator board, phabricator:tag/mediawiki-extensions-globalwatchlist. Any bug reports about the extension should be filed there.

This will likely be the last update sent to this list.
