HISTORIC PLACES IN WASHINTON

Thanks for your complement about the Mosquito Fleet navbox. I've been trying to figure out a way to hide it on the smaller articles on an article by article basis, but I don't know the code, so if you can hide it, great. Right now it's set up to autocollapse if there's another navbox on the page, Bailey Gatzert (sternwheeler) is example. I don't think it's a good idea to hide the navbox on all articles though, see Puget Sound Mosquito Fleet for an article where IMHO it looks good expanded. Where was the explanation given? I certainly did not see it. Had I seen it, I probably would not have reverted the edit. Crescenti trout

Simple. "Crescenti" is common, but wrong (see hypercorrection). It's bad Latin - the name crescentii meaning "of [Lacus] Crescentius" - "from Lake Crescent" in plain English. "Crescenti trout" is like calling the New York ironweed (Vernonia noveboracensis - see Eboracum) "Noveborac ironweed".

And with all organisms, the SOP is, if the scientific name is dedicated to a place or person, use that for the common name if there are not good grounds against it (sometimes places get applied in error etc. There are many birds called capensis "from the Cape" which are really from India or Indonesia, because the Cape of Good Hope is where ships transporting specimens would stop and R&R). See for example the birds here (unequivocal common names for more than 99% of all liiving birds are available these days). "LCct" is simply the default common name, and anyone who knows as much as what a trout and a lake is will understand it - even if that person has never heard of the lake nor its special trouts.

I added a few things regarding the taxonomic status. Even though I am actually more interested in the Beardslee trout (but me stupid European cannot hold these darned Oncorhynchus apart - brook trouts and lake trouts and Lake Ohrid's trouts and so on are difficult enough...), about which I have a source I'll add sometime. Spanish legal documents are not known by its clarity, as you can tell =). Honestly, I don't know that la "Primera" (and capitalized) means. My first interpretation would be that it means the "Former" (la Federación Comarcal, being the noun preceding la "Local"), does that make sense? Trinomial authorities

Saw your post from last year. Well there seems no easy and reliably working way. But Google can be used often. The starting point is - the ICZN treats specific and subspecific names as equals, because often species are sunk to subspecies and subspecies are elevated to species, and it is necessary to avoid homonyms.

So what I do in such cases is to check Google for the generic and the subspecific name. No specific name. This will yield results where the taxon is treated as subspecies, as well as any references to the taxon as full species. Because subspecies taxonomy was still nonstandardized as late as 100 years ago, the latter will be very common in older sources, which are closer in time to the original description and might backreference there or give the author directly.

Does not work always, but in the absence of a dedicated reference work it is the best quick fix around. It still needs backchecking: Though the rule exists that once a name has been used for a species or subspecies within a genus, it must not be given again to a different taxon in the same genus (and technically is binding for Linnean nomenclature), it is not always followed. List of anarchist websites

Regarding the question of WP:LINKSPAM, I agree with you that their is a possibility of it. I created it with a bit confusion. I thought such an article will be beneficial. You see wikipedia has no article on Anarchopedia. Though at present I have no account in Anarchopedia, I will create it. The Anarchopedia title is protected in wikipedia. And it can be considered as a bias or censorship in wikipedia. Anarchopedia also tells the same [1]. I thought by creating such an article, we will be able to gather those websites in one place which may not be suitable to have their own article, especially if their are articles like List of anarchist books or List of anarchist periodicals. However I essentially agree with you that their is a possibility of WP:LINKSPAM or promotional etc. So keeping that in mind, I have speedied the article. Hi; please see Template talk:Coast Salish in British Columbia, the "Questions" section, and have a look over the listings of {{Coast Salish}} to see if I've got the WAshington-side listings right/complete; note also {{Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast}} which isn't complete yet but which faces the same issues and/or may be prererable for the reasons I get into in the talkdiscussion (namely the presence of the Chimakuan/Quileute and Chinookans and the various isolates like Haida or others who don't fit in regional groupings like Nuu-chah-nulth and Kwakwaka'wakw and Tsimshian. On either template the government/First Nations section (First Nations here used to mean bandgovernments) there's US-side govs needed; I realize the ultimate link may be redirected to the same article for govt/people/reservation/language but for now it's delineating who goes where. Are all the various Puget Sound Salish peoples incorporated as governments separately, or are there larger-scale groupings like the tribal councils in BC? Just trying to get a handle on organizing all these entries, other than either geographically (N-S sequence) or alphabetically (which might be easiest). Also on the one template - the Indigenous PacNW one - names are given in indigenous spellings, on the {{tl|Coast Salish} one as close to their Wiki titles as possible (I made an exception for Nooksack (tribe)....which maybe should be the standard...it's just Wiki style rules like to disambig links, so if the indigenous spellings are preferred, then the respective articles should be retitled, just as Squamish people is now Sḵwxwú7mesh.Skookum1 (talk) 18:00, 18 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Also please have a look at Salish Sea.....I really don't like it, and found it had been inserted unnecessarily in contexts like "the Northwest Coast and the Salish Sea" as if that meant anything anyone would know what it meant; "the Northwest Coast and the Georgia Strait", "the Northwest Coast and the Strait of Juan de Fuca", "the Northwest Coast and Queen Charlotte Strait" - all redundant, just as the uses this thing has been put to; it's a neologism IMO, as is the effort to push "Whulge" as a term to include the Strait of Georgia when it's a purely Lushootseed term; perhaps not even known/used by the Nooksack, Skagit and Lummi? Anyway, your input on the move/rename there; I'd just prefer Georgia-Puget Basin....even User:OldManRivers, who is Sḵwxwú7mesh, says there's not a common name for the body of water; and even then the body of water would only be the Strait of Georgia; the waters off Olympia and the waters off Quadra Island just aren't part of the same thing.....Skookum1 (talk) 18:04, 18 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Skagit (tribe)

Hi; saw your adjustmeent to the Coast Salish template; I had three Skagit entries because there are three articles....but I see that Skagit (tribe) is for both; so either it's redundant and should be deleted, or it's the "ethno" page for the Skagit people, and the Upper and Lower Skagit pages should be for bands/reservaations/communities within that ethnic group. Is that right, or are the upper and lower Skagit ethnically distinct? If not, this is one of those examples where ethno content and organizational reality fall readily into the separated articles for government, people, community.....maybe. Anyway please advise, and thanks for the work on checking that over; I think {{Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast}} is a bit more problematic, as its author has used indigenous spellings rather than the Wikititle spellings....Skookum1 (talk) 22:42, 18 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yakima Park Stockade Group

And i was likewise surprised to see some description and a pic for this site in the List of Registered Historic Places in Pierce County, Washington, after I had added a different description starter to the WA NHL list, and just before I had saved a discussion response to you at WP:NRHP talk. I did not intend to start this article or any of the other WA NHLs for you, but it happens I was marching through the last of the National Park Service sites described eloquently by one Laura Soulliere Harrison, today. For example, I just beforehand created Bandelier CCC Historic District‎ and National Park Service Southwest Regional Office in New Mexico, and I added her footnote info to articles on some other scattered National Park buildings. About historic districts, I admired Daniel Case's coming forth with Hudson River Historic District, all at once. A more pathetic example is Geneseo Historic District, which i started and which is incomplete. I wasn't that confident or interested in proceeding with describing each of its contributing properties, for which I had info from the NRHP doc. It's nice to be able to state the count of contributing and non-contributing structures/properties in a district, but it's wide open about how much description you need to provide for any of them. MONKS MOUND DESTRUCTION

You removed a reference to the Monks Mound destruction under the claim that wikipedia or photobucket is not a reliable source to show that the actions were controversial. Another source you should look at is the Wotanging Itcke Vol 15.051. I recommend this citation for validity that the "excavation" is not appropriate. It also was shown in the article entitled "Accelerated Soil Erosion" located: http://soil.scijournals.org/cgi/reprint/66/6/1911.pdf that soil erosion has not been a problem since farming and plowing has stopped on mound surfaces. I beg your pardon

I welcome your recent contribution to the description of Chinook Point at List of National Historic Landmarks in Washington. Adjustments of that sort are critical to refining articles and making Wikipedia an encyclopedia we can all be proud of.

However, as the original author of the Chinook Point description, I wish to let you know that I intensly resent the edit summary "de-racist-ify description". I clearly understand the historic double-standard in application of the word "discover", and I do not and can not support an encyclopedia entry that demeans any ethnic or racial group. For these reasons, I specifically dwelt on the word "discovered" before including it in that initial version of the description, debating whether it would be appropriate or improper in this context. In the end, two points overcame my discomfort: (1) It was the same word used (as "discovery") in my source document (National Park Service. "National Historic Landmark Program: NHL Database". {{cite web}}: Cite has empty unknown parameter: |coauthors= (help)), and (2) the discussion at Discovery (observation)#Exploration presents uses of the word that do not imply denial of prior occupation or awareness of a location; I carefully linked to the latter discussion. What I did not do, however, is wantony apply certain received assumptions about European expansion in North America, thus exposing some sort of racist predisposition.

May other editors challenge or change the particular wording I used? Certainly. Perhaps I made a bad call, or perhaps other approaches simply improve the text. Does this mean those editors also may question my moral fitness? No. I hope and expect that other editors will assume my good faith.

Olive branch accepted. If I hadn't been so quick to get my back up, I would probably have deduced your actual intentions before banging on you like that. So, peace settled and thanks for engaging with me. In any event, you are probably correct that my logic was too subtle for the context, and that your change did clarify matters.

I've taken a bit of a break from the NHL articles, but I plan to be back sometime. When I do return, I'll be working on elevating List of National Historic Landmarks in Oregon to FL status, and I'll be very excited to help you do the same with Washington, despite that state's inferior status on the wrong side of the Columbia. ;-)

Hey, I took a look at your work, and it looks good. I went ahead and added some details and made some minor changes. Since the site is still presently recognized as existing (it is inundated but not destroyed), present tense should be fine. I think you should go ahead and take it out of your user space and put it into an article. I would have done it myself, but it seemed somehow presumptuous to invade another's user space like that (I felt invasive enough just editing in there). The article would benefit from a little reorganization and a few more details on the excavation, which I may add if I have time. This is an important site- I'm glad you've taken this project on. Anderson Island

Anderson Island is an island (obviously :-) The county templates are used for municipalities, governmentally-recognised areas such as townships (in states that have them), and various types of unincorporated communities. The basic reason that I'm not treating the islands that you noted as communities is that they focus on the island, not the community. Aside from the content of the article, a big reason for this is the name: communities in the USA are required to have the state's name included (for example, "Bow, Washington"; the standard way for naming other places (such as islands) is to have simply the island name, with the state name only given if necessary, and in parentheses — for example, Hart Island (Washington). It would be different, say, if the article were moved to something like "Anderson Island, Washington" and the contents refocused on the community rather than on the island, or if there were two different articles, but as is the article isn't the type of article that the county template is meant for. WA vs. MN lists of NHLs

You commented elsewhere, "I'm curious what it is that separates the Minnesota list from the Washington list." I think you were refering to the MN list having B-class rating while WA list has just Start-class by the rating scheme that I am using. In that rating scheme an NRHP list-article bascially gets B-class when every one of its NRHP articles indexed has hit Start. (There are some other requirements too, but that is the main one.) The MN list-article was the first one to get there. Every one of its NHL articles has a link to the corresponding NHL webpage. Almost all have NRHP text/photo set PDF documents included, and if they don't it is not for failing to try (the only articles that don't have those PDFs are the NHLs where those PDFs are not available on-line at the NPS).

A few of the WA NHL articles need development, by adding those references and perhaps otherwise, to justify their getting Start rating.

Okay, how's this: [2]? Sorry, I couldn't tell why the old version [3] had "Japanese Language Schools" bolded, it made it look like Japanese Language Schools was supposed to be a redirect there or something. The name "nihongo gakko" literally means "Japanese Language School" anyway ("Nihon Gogakko" is a rather odd way of spacing it; guess some back then came up with this way of writing it in English). WA governments/ethno/language articles

Howdy. Saw your refit of the Native Amercan history cat on the Marmes Rockshelter article, I guess you've noticed my various Category:Native American governments in Washington shifts; but many articles n question are still also-ethno articles. I don't have the time or knowledge, but suggestng here that, if you would, take the tme to "stub off" the tribal governments from the tribes themselves, also from the languages and even teh reservatons; many articles are four-in-one right now and shouldn't be. I have some "chores" to do in real life today (I'm hunting for new digs pronto...) so don't have the tme to even begin, but I could come up with a list of the intricacies of these and some of the needed/suggested splits; situations lke the Colville and Kootenai are especially tricky, but I'll explan more why later...."physical reservation" articles should be geographic, lke a muncipal or regional article, which is why Colville Indian Reservation isn't an appropriated palce for the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation to redirect to; the latter is a government, the former a territory; there's no Colville language article fror the new creole spoken there but perhaps there should be, but I'm not a linguistics type who could come up with it. Anyway Squaxin Island Tribe is an example of a government articles wth various sub-ethno articles (e.g. Sahewamish) but most olf those aren't lnked there; "Squaxin" is not an ethnicity, though, right? Anyway, tme to eat and get out of here...maybe the palce to start is with your Nooksack/Nows'a7ax (sp?); I thnk there's a separate language article, but could you pen a separate one for the government vs one for the people, ditto for the actual reservation?.Skookum1 (talk) 19:42, 12 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
