Topsy

Re: "you have not supplied a source backing up your claims" -----> You may have missed "Topsy: The Startling Story of the Crooked-tailed Elephant" by Michael Daly page 319 (a whole book on the actual event) which states this was not part of the War of Currents. Method of execution were probably chosen by owners, Frederick Thompson and Elmer Dundy. They do imply spite on the part of Edison. Fountains of Bryn Mawr (talk) 20:46, 26 June 2014 (UTC)

@Fountains of Bryn Mawr: Daly is just one author against a multitude of other sources. I looked at his webpage and saw, "Topsy the elephant was innocent!" Which is a clear POV on the incident. That discredits him as a reliable source. MrScorch6200 (talk | ctrb) 20:58, 26 June 2014 (UTC)
Nope, that's not a valid reading of WP:RS per WP:BIASED. We weren't even debating whether Topsy was innocent. Its a detailed source and there is no reason not to refer to it per its coverage of the events of that period and whether they were associated with the War on Currents. AC/DC: The Savage Tale of the First Standards War by Tom McNichol reaches pretty much the same conclusions BTW. The thing that is not helpful is citing sources that are brief, non-authoritative, with obvious factual errors such as these[1][2]. Examples of what wrong with those sources were given but in short, when a source says Tesla built Edison an AC motor, that's when you discard it. On that note, any pointers on how to actually navigate DRN? @Solarra: There's a good essay here and if you haven't read this yet, that is a formal guide. Generally we use policies and guidelines that apply to the particular dispute that we are moderating to help the parties come to a resolution (which is usually a compromise of some sort). Remember that they come to us when they can't resolve it themselves, so we have to guide them to a resolution. Always keep a cool head. A good way to say that an editor did something wrong (like violate a guideline of some sort) is not to address the editor directly, but everyone as a whole. i.e. Say, "You guys need to remember to follow x policy," instead of "whoever, you need to follow x policy." Saying the latter may make the opposing party feel that you're on their side, which is the last thing you want! Always stay impartial as best you can. Also, I recommend just following a case at first to get a feel for how experienced volunteers are handling it. Another good way to work your way up to DRN is to volunteer at Third Opinion first, which will start you out with small content disputes then work your way up to more complicated ones at DRN. Some cases will be difficult to the point where a second volunteer may help, or they may be as easy as a simple misunderstanding!
