Teahouse Maître'd

Hey, I'd love to be Maître'd for a bit to just try it out and see what it's like, would you mind if I only signed up for a week or so after yours ends? I don't want to sign up for more as I don't know how well it'll fit into my time and schedule, and whether it's something I'd really like to do for a long time. But I'd love to try it out. If it's okay to sign up for 5-7 days after your shift ends, just tell me and I'll go fill myself in! Thanks!

Oopsie! I just looked back at the calendar (which I should have before posting this), and I noticed that your shift ended yesterday. So I'll go ahead and sign up for a shift starting yesterday and going through next Friday if that's okay. Now for another question. thank you for the teahouse cleanup

I was the user she was speaking of, and the only reason she attributed my motives to my religion was I display a Christianity userbox on my userpage. This editor has serious problems and I am kinda wondering how to proceed with her. I will not any longer communicate with her directly, as she slammed my religious beliefs the last time I tried. Would you please take a look at her contributions and give me some advice quietly? I have been trying to get a hold of Dennis to ask for his advice, but am somewhat unwilling to talk about this in an open forum. My email is enabled. Thank you for your help. WikiWomen's Collaborative

Hi, just a note to say I support the idea of the WikiWomen's Collaborative. I have at least one or two female friends who refuse to have anything to do with Wikipedia, one of whom (who has the time and the motiviation to contribute a lot) believes it be, in her own words, "wasting an awful lot of energy picking arguments with what look like self-important, puffed-up wallies". Reference your feedback on my entry

Hi Sarah - thanks for looking at my entry and suggesting how to improve it. I'm tried to make it more neutral (please let me know if you think it reads better now) and also taken out the copyright symbols.

You had also mentioned to include more citations. In relation to the entry how do you think I could do this and what are citations. Whilst not being computer illiterate at all I am finding negotiating around wikipedia & understanding it's rules and editing pages etc a challenge!

Hey John! Thanks for trying to contribute to Wikipedia - I know it can be overwhelming. A good place to get help about a specific thing (i.e. "what are citations and how do I add them?") is the Teahouse, a place I co-created for new editors like yourself to get easy to understand help. Anyway, you already have two citations added the EU prize and the London Gazette news article. What you'll need is more content like that. Basically, if something in a Wikipedia article doesn't have a citation or a source, something in the media or publications that talks about the subject, it can be challenged or removed. Subjects that can be considered promotional, like yours, risk being completely deleted if they do not have enough coverage. In the article, you state that the product has been featured in over 200 articles. That means there are over, in theory 200 citations that could be used to write the article. Just keep inserting references and the article will improve. ANd yes, the language has improved! SarahStierch (talk) 16:52, 24 October 2012 (UTC)

Followup on deletion of Dominic H. Francisco

You deleted Dominic H. Francisco as a result of a recent AFD. However, that AFD included three related articles in a bundled nomination: Russian Horrors, New Terrain, Baltic Dreams, which are still hanging around. Additionally, the creator of these articles, User:Dhf510, has apparently converted his userpage to an exact copy of the deleted article. I'm not sure what the best course of action is here (reversion, deletion as recreation, MFD, etc.), especially considering that he is self-admittedly the subject of the deleted article. Hi there. It might be best to ask for help at the Teahouse, a space that I co-created to help new editors like yourself. I'm pretty swamped with other wiki projects and so forth, so I might not be able to provide the assistance you need to help with your article. The image you seek to use depends on the copyright of the image - if the copyright page says it's CC BY SA or CC BY A then you can use it on any Wikipedia article regardless of language. If it says it is copyrighted and/or fair use, then I don't think you can use it. It might be best to double check with the Teahouse folks though. SarahStierch (talk) 22:52, 24 October 2012 (UTC)

Donald Wallace in Croton

Hi Sarah, long time, no see! I'm doing some bit by bit improvements to Croton-on-Hudson, my current home. You recently added Donald Wallace to the village's notable residents, but I can't find a reference to Croton in the source you gave (Cooper Union museum). Can you help out with that one? Eventually, I'm going to eliminate the list, and just retain a prose style discussion of those notable residents/former residents who have sourcing. Jin Gyeong-suk

Hi Sarah, I'm from Berlin/Germany and I wrote the article about Jin Gyeong-suk (strictly speaking I prepared a German version and an American friend of mine translated into English). Thank you for reviewing it. Concerning the style I could ask my friend to rewrite it in a more encyclopedic tone. In terms of additional citations for verification, I don't know other sources than the sources which I entitled in the article. How can I handle this? Isn't Amnesty an relieable source? @ Deidra. You don't know what they want! And you certainly are not competant to decide for them what they want. Its their journey..not yours. @Sarah. Something needs to be done about this situation...and quickly. New Users come to Wikipedia completely blind to the hows and the wherefores of Wikipedia. They should not be led by a novice with questionable motives. A quick check of the contributions [1] of User:Deidra shows that she is radically and negatively effecting the initial, important first contacts that new users are having. She should not be adopting anyone. I think we have a prime duty and responsibility to protect new users from being mis-lead. This is not a road less travelled. This is a road that shouldn't be travelled at all...not by this user. As a member of WP:WER, I had a premonition that something twisted would happen. I dare say everyone involved here had the same premonition. What can be done to protect new users from being "misguided" without their knowledge? or permission? A teenage girl leaving cookies on peoples talk pages is the least of my worries on Wikipedia. I saw the post, and the rest of peoples comments and chose to disconnect, per the drama llama template on my talk page. I'd say this fall into the drama llama category. Sorry Buster! I know for a fact she is a teenager and she has no questionable motives. She isn't adopting anyone, either, if you didn't continue to follow the conversation. The fact that she is a teenager was quite obvious. This is not an issue of Age. Its about a neophyte leading and teaching a neophyte under the guise of "I'm Experienced. You can listen to my advice." But this isn't FaceBook. She has done more than just give out cookies (she gave me some). She did in fact adopt a user, User talk:Brybry1999, on October 22nd at his/her talk page., (my guess is he or she is also a teenager, probably 13 years old), with the comment, "I know all the policies....". I take the mistreatment and the possible damage to a potential WP career (Brybry1999's) as very important. I dont want to hurt Raidens fragile spirit. But, she cannot be allowed to present herself as a qualified instructor to new editors that don't know any better. She likes and trusts you. A word from you may do the trick and have her see the folly of her ways. BTW, I liked your "Drama LLama" and I am using it on my page. I completely understand if you don't see it as an important issue. No prob. "questionable motives"? really? looking through her contributions i couldn't find the "radically and negatively effecting the initial, important first contacts that new users are having." could you be more specific? it's hard for me to imagine what that contact would be that would be worse, than the average wall of escalating warnings and a block, such as [2]. i just spent all my time at WLL events, coaching expert editors who had previously had their edits deleted, on how to interact with the toxic environment. even "questionable" efforts at wikilove are better than that.

I am not looking for the power myself. Im looking for someone with the power to protect new editors. If it is not Sarah, no problem. Maybe someone else will see this and better understand my concern. By questionable motives I'm referring to Deidra's childish refusal to follow the advice of fellow editors to not adopt new editors while she is still learning the fundamentals. This isn't a social network site. This isn't about being friendly. I'm one of the friendliest editors you could meet. Would The Romney or Obama camps smile dispassionately while a brand new supporter was promoting herself as a spokesman for the Campaign and telling potential voters to disregard the rules and policies and the advice of veteran politicos? @Slowking4. While I agree there is quite a bit of drama here, Buster has some valid points, albeit somewhat overboard for a child/teen. I have already had to personally address some inaccurate guidance this editor has offered to others, which brought about a bit of unnecessary confusion. That said, the editor in question can actually be found here: User:RAIDENRULES123. As a side note, the concerns have seemingly been abated due to the editor's own adoption by User:Keilana. A little deeper investigation will show that Raiden/Deidra did, in fact, "adopt" at least two new editors and, due to her mis-guidance, cause much consternation, misunderstanding over policies and guidelines, and alot of un-necessary work to repair an article. (talk page stalker) Hey Deidra. I think it's great you are willing to adopt users, but I think you should wait a while and dive a little more deeply into Wikipedia. Most of your editing has been on user talk pages, and less work on article content creation, dispute resolution, copyright, or deletion of articles, all of which a potential adopter should have some level of experience with (though it certainly doesn't need to be absolutely perfect). I'd suggest trying to check out these different aspects of being an editor before trying to adopt. I'll let Sarah weigh in here too, but I just wanted to give you my thoughts on the matter. Hey! It's awesome that you want to adopt a user. It's a lot of work and dedication. I do have to agree with Jethro though - it takes a lot of Wikipedia experience in writing articles and knowing about policy before you can do that. Could you please take another look at this AfD you just relisted? The nominator all but admitted it was a bad-faith AfD, which poisoned the AfD from the start and brought calls to keep or close from four or five different users. There are over 40 citations listed in the article and the AfD discussion, so WP:GNG doesn't seem to be in question. Eliminate Duplicate wikipage

Hi Sarah, I got your email about the article having conflict of interests information - actualy, I made a mistake somehwere and entered the same page 2x for reviews. The first article "Great Lakes Consortium for Fish Consumption Advisories" is the correct page. I made the mistake of putting a duplicate version on the GLRI2011 user page.

Here is what I did:

1) I wrote the article in my sandbox

2) I submitted it on 10-29 and recieved an email that I needed to move the information into my User page - which I did, and now there are two copies with different names.

3) My emails now say a conflict of interests - (they are the same article)

4) How do I delete the GLRI2011 page?

Biography would probably be better, since women's history focuses on women who made an impact on women's history more than anything else. What do you think about that? Article for Creation: Center Stage Atlanta by Katyw220

Good afternoon Sarah, I hope this is the correct avenue to get in touch with you. I so appreciate you leaving feedback on my last submission, it's the first time someone has! I can only imagine how busy you are but if you have some time, I'd like to go over my page. I'm obviously new at this and as you can probably tell, I've been struggling with my article for almost 6 months now! I am determined to get my page published and will happily comply with any guidelines you have, I just have a few questions.

On the issue of my sources, I completely understand how flickr and social media sites would not be the best references. However, after I was told via Wiki livechat that I would have to back up these performances, I checked some of the other local venue pages to see how they did this and found that Variety Playhouse (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Variety_Playhouse) used Flickr for more than a few performances (reference number 27), while the Tabernacle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Tabernacle) and Masquerade (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Masquerade_(Atlanta)) were able to get their page published with show lists that had no references whatsoever.

I can easily remove those performances/artists who have unreliable sources, but I'm wondering why there's a discrepancy between the requirements for my page and the pages mentioned above that were permitted publishing. I know you were more than likely not the person to give them the green light, I'm just lost.

Also, in my last livechat on 10/2, I spoke to a reviewer/aid (magicskyjuice) who went over the "guideline for buildings" and said if I could find one more newspaper/magazine article on the venue, he'd pass it. I saved this conversation, here's an excerpt: [11:39] <magicskyjuice> katy, if you can find one more i'll pass it [11:39] <katy> k, that'd be wonderful! When I submit it again, is there a way I can tag you or send it to you? [11:40] <magicskyjuice> i'll watch that article and i'll look next week

I found that last source by digging up a physical issue of Jezebel Magazine (reference number 9) and resubmitted, but to no avail. Again, I know you aren't this person, but this is my first page and I'm trying to learn how things are done. I didn't know if it was worth me trying to find him/her or what.

A little more help needed

Solanas booking photo

Am I being overly concerned about the copyrigt on the image you supplied at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Solanas_custody.jpg for the Valerie Solanas article? I'm not sure about having two images of her for both of which the fair use raionale is irreplaceability; presumably one can replace the other, and another fair use image of her was kept. Since this one, showing Solanas at her police booking, is sourced to your photostream at Flickr and thus only indirectly to MIT Press and AP and I don't know Flickr's fair use standards, I wasn't sure about taking from a chain of users. Feel free to respond at Talk:Valerie Solanas#deleted image toward GA status and kept one or to edit as you see fit, especially since my undersdtanding of Wikipedia is that a photo not being used may get deleted from all of Wikipedia in a few days, give or take, as an orphan. Systemic bias?

SarahStierch, I think you may be rating the importance of articles for WikiProject Women scientists somewhat higher than the rest of us are. I see anomalies like Mary Kenneth Keller being rated as Top-importance along with women like Marie Curie. The higher ratings result in a bias in favor of computer scientists. You might find a list of articles sorted by score revealing. The scores are a measure of importance that factors in number of watchers, page view, links etc. Although it shouldn't be taken too seriously, I find many Top- and High-importance ratings unusually far down the list are for articles on computer scientists. Tell me more about how prodding the bios of professors and university deans is helpful :-) I do want to understand that ethic, since we need to do something about the massive body of information which falls into the category of "clearly useful to someone, and notable in some subdomain, but may be prodded by a well-meaning editor Any Day Now". This is the sort of deletion req that would make me frustrated and want to leave if I wasn't already an active community member... particularly if I were just an information-theory junkie for whom notability was obvious. – SJ + 03:21, 6 November 2012 (UTC)

The reason for the "targeting" is that SarahStierch just co-founded WikiProject Women scientists, so naturally she's busy tagging articles on women. However, a wikiproject can't indiscriminately promote all articles in its scope. The subjects have to be notable. So far, the articles on Toniann Pitassi and Jenny Preece have not provided any evidence of notability. If you can find evidence, great. If not, the articles should be deleted. Your opinion that the article on Pitassi doesn't already provide evidence for notability says more about your ignorance of the subject than about her. She is this year chairing the top conference in theoretical computer science. She has seven papers with over 100 citations each in Google scholar, well over the level that academic deletion discussions typically judge to be a pass of WP:PROF#C1 (and providing some 700 reliable sources for her research contributions, well over the "multiple sources" required by GNG). And, although it is true that being an invited speaker at most conferences is not enough by itself for notability, ICM is special in this respect, to the point where the American Mathematical Society used it as one of the criteria for its inaugural set of fellows (for what this means see WP:PROF#C3; Pitassi was not included, I assume because she is not an AMS member). As for Preece, her book Online Communities alone has over 2000 citations in Google scholar, so the evidence that she passes WP:PROF is even more clear. —David Eppstein (talk) 05:29, 6 November 2012 (UTC)

I do have to say, it's pretty brilliant that the gender gap fellow is being accused of system bias. I guess pigs can fly :) I'm a researcher by trade - and hell, if a BLP doesn't appear notable based on a few citations - and someone just "being a professor" doesn't make them notable, means that their article should prove that they are. I'm reviewing hundreds of articles - 3 people being proded, regardless of gender, doesn't make them special. Calm down everyone - and improve the encyclopedia! Barbara Jane Liskov

Hi,

You recently added "{{BLP sources|date=November 2012}}"[7] to the Barbara Jane Liskov article. However, you didn't mention on the talk page or in the summary why you felt the article needed this banner. What was your reasoning? The template says that we need more sources, and that anything unsourced could be removed. This is true all the time, for all articles. Anything uncited, and if there aren't footnotes that means it's in theory possibly uncited, means it can be removed. She's not special - I'm reviewing hundreds of biographical articles right now as part of a project about women in science that i co-started. It just means that if content about her, especially claims (i.e. "Liskov has led many significant projects," - even if it's true, that paragraph has no citations), can be removed. The template serves as a tool for people to say "Oh hey, we should add citations and improve this." Another example "Barbara Liskov is the author of three books and over a hundred technical papers." - I can also say I've done that, but where is the proof? It's nothing personal, promised. Hi Chris! The best way to go about it is to start the article in your Sandbox. If you look at the "user" menu in the upper right corner you'll see "My sandbox," that is where you can experiment and build the article. When you are ready for review you can hit the "submit" button in the template at the top of the page, and then more experienced Wikipedians will review it, and make any additional suggestions you might need to move the article to the "main space" of Wikipedia. I have access to many independent, third-party, reliable sources that (I feel) prove that PrismTech is notable and deserves its own page (product pages may be discussed later). I have managed to salvage the old page, and would appreciate any input on how to improve the page so it does not get deleted again. As I said there are many notable sources/publications that discuss PrismTech and its products, I have the page in my sandbox and would appreciate an example page of a similar (size, industry, notable) company to help guide the creation of this page. Hi there. Remember, any admin can help - all admins have the power to delete and undelete! I'm also pretty busy generally, so for faster help it's best to visit the Teahouse, a project I developed to help editors like yourself. Anyway, none of the links on the salvaged page are reliable - anything that has been created by the organization or company, or supplied by the company (press release) are reliable at all. I just went through a list of Google coverage to find reliable sources for PrismTech. Most things I found were either company created or supplied. The only thing I found was: [8]. After going through about 30 pages, I'm not sure that this company establishes notability. Therefore I don't think it can have it's own Wikipedia article, unless, of course, you have a vast collection of healthy coverage in notable media publications. This list has a list of "good articles" about companies. They are good examples of what a company article should be. Please don't take it personal if your article can't be on Wikipedia right now - it might just have to wait until it's more notable. I do encourage you to consider writing about other subjects or companies. I'm not sure if you're a staff member at the company, but, Wikipedia frowns heavily about staff members writing about their own companies. Thanks again, and try the Teahouse, too!
