Thank you for your support

Miniapolis, I would like to take this moment and thank you for the trust you had placed in me and for your support in my RfA that happened a while ago. Although it didn't turn out as I had planned, I certainly appreciated all the comments and suggestions given by you and other people. I will learn from all of them and will hopefully run again someday when I'm fully ready. Thank you. TheGeneralUser (talk) 13:20, 3 June 2014 (UTC)

I hope you do stand again, because you'll make a good admin. With some exceptions the WP community is forgiving, and after a period of non-problematic work in admin-related areas (such as CSD tagging and participating in AfD discussions) I think you'll pass. At least now you know what a rough business it's become; looking at pre-2008 RFAs is enlightening :-). Have fun, see you around and all the best, Miniapolis 13:34, 3 June 2014 (UTC)

Guild of Copy Editors May 2014 backlog elimination drive wrap-up

Participation: Thanks to all who participated! Out of 51 people who signed up this drive, 33 copy edited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Progress report: We reduced our article backlog from 2,987 articles to 2,236 articles in May, the lowest backlog total since we began keeping records in 2009! Since at least 300 new articles were tagged during May, that means we copy edited over 1,000 articles in a single month. Amazing work, everyone!

Blitz: The June blitz will run from June 15–21. This blitz's theme is Politics. Sign up here.

Election: You can nominate yourself or others for the role of Coordinator for the second half of 2014 here. Nominations will be accepted until June 14. Voting will begin on June 15 and will conclude on June 28.

Cheers from your GOCE coordinators Jonesey95, Baffle gab1978, and Miniapolis.

Mentor

Hey, I've been on Wikipedia for over 2 months now, and learned a lot by myself. But my biggest flaw is that I'm not that good at organizing articles and keeping their grammar in check. Would you be available to be my mentor? (Im not that good at requests, as you can notice) URDNEXT (talk) 14:25, 20 June 2014 (UTC)

Sure, and the beauty of WP is that by following those blue links it's pretty easy to teach yourself as well. I've been editing actively for a few years, and am always learning new stuff. All the best, Miniapolis 16:01, 20 June 2014 (UTC)
Great! Do you have any idea of when you're gonna be available, and where we communicate? (my talk page, your talk page) URDNEXT (talk) 16:12, 20 June 2014 (UTC)
My availability varies because of RL; basically, I'm around when I'm around :-). If you have questions or want me to check something, you can drop me a note here. All the best, Miniapolis 16:18, 20 June 2014 (UTC)
Alright, my biggest question is what do I look for when reviewing an article. Grammar problems? Citations? Non-free images? URDNEXT (talk) 16:22, 20 June 2014 (UTC)
It depends on what kind of a review you're doing. Articles for Creation and good-article nominations have different criteria, and copyediting is basically grammar, spelling and punctuation. All the best, Miniapolis 16:27, 20 June 2014 (UTC)
Let's say I'm reviewing a GAN. URDNEXT (talk) 16:31, 20 June 2014 (UTC)
WP:GA? is a good guide. Some reviewers apply featured-article criteria to GANs, but the standards are different. Check the three quick-fail criteria first, and then the six GA criteria. All the best, Miniapolis 16:37, 20 June 2014 (UTC)
Alright, thanks! I'll check on you once I get any questions. Again, thanks for the help! URDNEXT (talk) 16:46, 20 June 2014 (UTC)

GOCE adoption

Hello Miniapolis! If you're busy, I'd understand, but if you can, do you mind adopting me for the GOCE? I'm participating in the June blitz right now, so if you can adopt me, how about we start after the blitz ends? Cheers! WooHoo!Talk to BrandonWu! 00:05, 20 June 2014 (UTC)

Sure, I'll be glad to; thanks for your interest. Enjoy the rest of the blitz and all the best, Miniapolis 00:15, 20 June 2014 (UTC)
Are we going to start a subpage of of the GOCE or are we going to do this some other way? Cheers! WooHoo!Talk to BrandonWu! 03:15, 24 June 2014 (UTC)
No, I don't think that's necessary. Mentoring (or adopting or whatever) is pretty informal, and we can do it here. All the best, Miniapolis 13:27, 24 June 2014 (UTC)

Ok great! Where do we start? I know that during copyediting you need to check the prose (obviously) according to the Manual of Style policy and that you must spotcheck references and tables as well. Also, you can add tags to the article if copyediting is too difficult. Anything else to add? Brandon (MrWooHoo)Talk to Brandon! 23:03, 24 June 2014 (UTC)

Probably the most important thing we copyeditors do is to make sure that the prose agrees with the MOS. Although it's helpful to spot-check references, it's not really part of copyediting; I'll check a reference to see how it supports a confusing bit of prose, and tweak the prose accordingly. I often remove or adjust tags, instead of adding them; if a page has an {{unreferenced}} tag and someone's added a single source, say, I'll change the tag to {{one source}}. If there's an "unreferenced" tag but an external-links section has what looks like reliable sources, I'll update the tag to {{no footnotes}}. Tag-bombing and the overuse of {{Multiple issues}} bug me; when I first started copyediting, I read someplace (don't remember where) that it shouldn't be used for fewer than three tags, and I think too many editors have Twinkle set up to automatically add it. Glad to see you've signed up for the July drive, since (as usual) we have our work cut out for us :-). Hope this helps, and if you have other questions please don't hesitate to ask. All the best, Miniapolis 23:21, 24 June 2014 (UTC)
