There has been some speculation over if Irna Phillips created Days, but in a speech Ken Corday gave, he saids that his parents created Days Irna Phillips (I think Allan Chase might have been involved in the creation, but I will leave it open)

I am interested in joining, but I will not be able to attend the meetings because my work hours are 2 PM to 10:30 PM during the weekdays. Since I am able to be in the mornings, I can deal with the publicity issues over the Internet or on the radio (WGST-AM mostly, but i can also deal with it on the Internet). I doubt I could be of much help, unless you have some technical work that I could do towards making Atlanta Wikimania happen (no idea what that might be); my social and organizational skills are minimal at best. Atlanta's actually a bit far from me (~7 hours by car), so I probably won't be able to go, either, barring dramatic lifestyle improvements before then. Glad to hear about your mom! Hey, you emailed me about wikimania in Atlanta. Just curious. How were you able to search on Atlanta and "find" me? Actually, while I lived in Atlanta from 1991 thru 2001, I no longer live there, but in Vancouver, WA, just north of the East-West- running Columbia river from Portland, OR. Nevertheless, I still consider the ATL area as my 2nd home and have visited several times. I'd move back if it weren't for the heat/humidity/bugs and while we have rain all winter out here, our summers are among the most beautiful in the world - that and the scenery. Anyways, just wanted to know by what process you were able to locate me. Last question. What's this about becoming an editor and is it very useful? If you do a search on me, you'll notice that I've contributed quite a lot to wikipedia including entire several new articles, including biographies I started the article on the Theodore Roosevelt Association of which I am a member and on their IT committee (they're trying to creep and crawl into the 21st Century. Mike - by Editor, I meant someone who can arbitrate or resolve disputes. What does Wikipedia call that kind of person - an administrator? Is anyone who contributes simply an editor. I know these sound like dumb questions, but I haven't really explored the internals of how wikipedia works, article-wise, dispute-wise, etc. Re the Roosevelts, we lived in Roswell just a couple blocks from Bulloch Hall where Theodore Roosevelt's mom was raised and that helped me get interested in TR. I've contributed extensively on TR and all his children as well as a little on Eleanor where I got into a flap with someone over the on-going dispute between Eleanor and Alice Roosevelt Longworth, TR's daughter by his first marriage. That's also why I asked about arbitration. We almost had to take it to that level. Another interesting wiki tidbit. While researching on a specific historical topic in wikipedia, I found out some totally new historical information by putting 2 and 2 together. In the end, I stripped OUT all the new info, because that information could easily be a part of a masters in history thesis I hope to one day write, but it wouldn't look right seeing it in wikipedia FIRST!!! Dorcas Drake

This may sound incredibly random, but I remember that, oh, about eight months ago, you asked me to look for any information on Dorcas Drake. Well, in doing some research on The Mayor's Commission on the Status of Women, I found that one of the honorees from 1989 was Dorcas Drake -- who is in fact a woman. Hee! Anyway, I've added a couple reliable sources to the article, deleted that misleading NY Times link that said she's a man, baby (couldn't resist the Austen Powers joke), and a little bit more information that was available. Hacking days

You said in the meeting that hacking days had been cut down to one day, due to a lack of venue. I think that's really unfortunate, because Wikimania seems to be one of the few times the devs can work together in person. Depending on what is actually required, the College of Computing (my school) can probably provide places to hack. This could include a formal computer lab, or just lounges for people to sit together and plug in laptops. Even with little notice, something could probably be worked out (there are two buildings, one very big). But I'm sure we could reserve something if we started now/soon. Soap opera moves of the woman's last name.

We have got to do something about User:TimothyBanks moving the women last names of soap operas to names that they are not that well-known by. On his talk page, I stated the problems with his moves, as you can see with this link...as did two other editors, TAnthony being one of them. And I joined in the discussion here that you voiced your thoughts in what is basically the same topic. I'm not sure what we can really do at this moment about his moves, unless he does not listen and keeps moving these women to their last names that they are not well-known by, but I felt that I'd give you a personal heads-up on who is doing this, in case you didn't already know. I might post a similar message like this on the Wiki Soap Operas project talk page. I was redirected from Flyer22's page to the Sami talk page. I agree this moving thing is getting crazy. When thinking of any soap character, immediately their "original" or "birth" names come to mind. Kayla Brady will always be Kayla Brady, I rarely remember the "Johnson" part at the end. I can understand the logic behind the Kayla Brady Johnson theory for the sole reason that she has been credited by the name for her entire re-tenure on the show, but personally I'm all for characters staying with their maiden (or, in the case of a character like Carly Corinthos on GH, their 'chosen name') name. At the rate these people get married and divorced, the only characters on the soaps that should be under a married name are those that have either always used their married name (ie. Alice Horton), or characters who were well known by and died by their married names (ie. Lila Quartermaine). To be honest, my pet peeve is when characters are suddenly being tagged with a name they've never used or been credited with (ie. Marlena Evans being tagged as Marlena Black, or Erica Kane being tagged by any of her married names). D'Amico 08:03, 16 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That's how I mainly feel on this subject, D'Amico. And, if any of you didn't know already, it's apparent that TimothyBanks' moves of a woman's last name to a last name that she is not well-known by is not only limited to fictional characters. He moved the article Heather Mills twice to a name (Heather, Lady McCartney) that she is not most well-known by, as seen with this link...[1]. Editors of that article had that article moved back, of course, when one asked what the heck was up with that move, and another rightfully cited common name. On a related topic, would you be willing to unprotect Samantha Roberts? You protected it back in June in an effort to stop a revert war; but editors have simply gone on warring over different titles, with the result that "Samantha Roberts" ends up as a double-redirect to whatever title is currently in use, and cannot be fixed without an admin's intervention. There doesn't seem to be much point in protecting the redirect if the target of the redirect isn't also protected. --Russ (talk) 12:58, 17 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
And there's the problem. She's listed correctly as Sami Brady and should stay that way. Daniel Case has protected the Sami Brady page so that it can no longer be moved. I'll ask him to look at the Samantha Roberts page. As it is generally accepted with Sami, she is now, and forever will be Sami Brady nee Roberts. If Bryan Dattilo is right, they'll be divorced soon anyway. That's the problem with characters, especially those like Sami who has been married many times but none of them has stuck. Everyone knows her as Sami Brady and she was even referred to as that in a recent blog about The Biggest Loser and on the Jerry Lewis telethon. Those who haven't watched in a year wouldn't know who Samantha Roberts was but say Sami Brady and everyone knows. It's like Erica Kane. Everyone knows the name, but I couldn't tell you who she's married to. Most people who know Susan Lucci know her as Erica Cane. Just as most people who know Alison Sweeney know her as Sami Brady. I am a little ticked off by the brass of his moves. Be bold, sure, but his moves are more than bold, they are usually wrong due to his lack of consideration for common names. Current events

First of all, honest thanks for not being confrontational. Dunno: it just seemed to me that adding "U.S." helps make the context clearer -- like the way Bush, Musharraf & Brown are invariably labeled "US President..." "President of Pakistan...", "PM of the United Kingdom", etc., even though their names enjoy instant brand recognition among 99% of the readership. The other nagging matter at the back of my mind is whether sports stories even belong on CE but, as one of those people whose eyes glaze over the moment the sports results come on the news, I'm probably not the one to make such a decision and prefer not to travel down that road. I'm certainly not in a position to decide how important a given sporting story is compared to another, but I think indicating the country we're talking about is the least we should do. Wikimania 2008/Conference of the Americas

Hello, As you may or may not know, Alexandria, Egypt was selected to host Wikimania 2008 [3]. So as to prevent the hard work of the many Wikimedians involved in the Atlanta bid from going to waste, we have decided to host a conference for the Americas. This is in no way an attempt to compete with Wikimania or make a statement against Wikimania.

Intent to move

Just to let you know I intend to complete the move from University of Southern Mississippi to The University of Southern Mississippi per the naming guideline. The University is named (by statute) "The University of Southern Mississippi" and refers to itself as such in University literature. I don't have time to give you all the supporting evidence right now(you can find it here), but I wanted to let you know of my upcoming action (which I stopped midway due to another editor's concerns) and show you that this is one of the few cases where "The" is appropriate (per our guidelines). Twiggy: Leslie or Lesley?

Yes, the America's Next Top Model video clip does spell her name as "Lesley". Is that definitive? I guess you'd have to check her birth certificate.

The external links cited by the Wikipedia article are ambiguous:

  • IMDB uses "Leslie".
  • TV.com uses both "Lesley" and "Leslie".
  • The Swindle interview uses "Leslie".

On Google:

  • +"lesley hornby" +twiggy gets 14,800 hits.
  • +"leslie hornby" +twiggy gets 684 hits.

The Biography Channel uses "Lesley".

Twiggy (disambiguation) uses "Leslie".

So, it seems there's a difference of opinion. An opportunity for you to do some more research and to set everyone straight, if you like. At one point there was an "Alternative Names" entry in the Wikipedia article's infobox, so that's an option, too.
