Hi Maragm, I'm not very good at all the coding, just like the topic and am able to speak both languages so I started translating pages. Not sure exactly what code to use to indicate that the page was translated so I will just start writing in the references section that the pages are generally translated from their Spanish equivalents. In terms of Pedro Fernández de Fuentencalada, firstly, regardless of the spelling error, I am unsure how to change the name, but there is already a Pedro Fernández de Castro from a different time period >http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pedro_Fern%C3%A1ndez_de_Castro . Do not know his nickname so would not know what to change it to. I originally picked Fuentecalada over Castro for that reason. As you are involved in the Spanish lines and have worked on the Lasso de la Vega family, please note that the page linked to Pedro Lasso de la Vega appears to be a different person according to the dates mentioned. http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pedro_Laso_de_la_Vega (For your reference). --- He is referred to as the 2nd head of house on the "Casa de la Vega Page" (http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casa_de_la_Vega), he is reffered to as the predecessor of "Garci Lasso de la Vega I" on his page (http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garci_Lasso_de_la_Vega_I), and on his own page he is listed as being between Garci Lasso de la Vega I and Diego Gómez de Aza. Refer to the succession boxes.

Hi Maragm, good observation on the three Counts of Alva, better to leave the arms off. In terms of changing her name to Sancha Sanchez of Pamplona, I had thought about it when creating the page but that name already links directly to Fernán González of Castile, one of her husbands.

Hello Agricolae, They don't seem to agree, but here's what I have:
Secondary sources: Margarita Torres, as you mention, has her as the daughter of Gonzalo Peláez and his wife Mayor Muñoz in page 112 in her book on lineages of León and Castile. Yet in p. 179 she mentions Sancha (not her marriage) as the daughter of Gonzalo Ansúrez and Urraca Vermúdez as confirmed by a charter in 1124 in Corias where Urraca make a donation for the soul of Gonzalo. In pag. 336, she again mentions that Sancha is the daughter of Gonzalo Peláez.
  • Canal Sánchez-Pagin, also mentions in p. 77 in his work on the Casa de Traba that Fernando Pérez married twice, firstly, with Sancha González de Lara, daughter of Gonzalo Peláez.
  • Thesis on Casa de Lara, Vol. I, p. 70 - Antonio Sánchez Mora says that following Pellicer (Inf. Casa Sarmiento), Salazar y Castro identifies Sancha González, daughter of Gonzalo Núñez de Lara as the wife of count Fernando. Pérez de Traba but that currently, it is known that she was actually the daughter of Gonzalo Ansúrez and Urraca Vermúdez.
Primary sources
  • 1134, April 22 (Tumbo de Lorenzana, doc. 44): Countess Sancha and her siblings divide their inheritance, donating part to the monks at Lorenzana. The siblings mentioned are Pedro, Rodrigo, and Cristina Glz.
  • 1142, April 24 (Lorenzana, doc. 154): countess Sancha makes a donation to the monastery mentioning her grandfather, Vermudo Ovéquiz.
  • 1149, may 1 (Lorenzana doc. 43): Countess Sancha in a private donation mentions her great-grandfather Alfonso and her grandmother Vita Alfonso. (She must have died after 24 July 1161 when she is mentioned as the widow of count Fernando Pérez).
Even though I added in es.wiki that some authors believe that she was the daughter of Gonzalo Peláez, it would seem from the primary sources (particularly the charter in 1142 where she mentions her grandfather Vermudo Ovéquiz) that she was the daughter of Gonzalo Ansúrez and Urraca Vermúdez. On the great-grandfather and grandmother that she mentions in 1149, I would guess that Ansur Díaz's wife, Elo, could have been known by a cognomento (Vita) and that this Elo "Vita" would have been the daughter of an Alfonso. Also, perhaps the fact that she had two brothers, Pedro and Rodrigo Glz (as attested by the charter in 1134), would have been the cause of confusion, identifying them as Pedro and Rodrigo Glz de Lara, who definitely existed. pd. It mentions in the article on Fernando Pérez de Traba that Sancha was possibly his second wife….I don’t think so. It also says that the earliest record of the marriage was in 1134, when there is a charter in 1122 in San Martín de Jubia where Fernando and his wife Sancha make a donation. I think Fernando was married to Sancha and did not repudiate her when he took Teresa as his lover, since Fernando and Sancha appear together from the first charter in 1122 up until at least 1153 when Fernando and Sancha together make a donation to Sobrado.
Thanks. The charter naming her grandmother would seem to be definitive. I note that we (wiki.en) are showing Pedro Ansúrez as son Justa Pérez. Torres Sevilla gives him and brother Gonzalo as sons of Ansur's first wife, who she doesn't name. Has anyone made this identification of their mother as Elo Alfonso in print? Oops...this is confusing. I have Ansur Díaz married to Elo and then to Justa. I have a note from the Monastery of S. Román (not the charters, but the prologue) and it says that Ansur Díaz was the father of Pedro Ansúrez but not with his second wife, Justa, but from his first wife, Elo, and this is taken from "Advertencias, Tome XXXV of España Sagrada". What I have, and yet I must confirm, is that Ansur Díaz & Elo were the parents of Pedro and Gonzalo Ansúrez. With his second wife, Justa, he had Diego "Anaya" Ansúrez. Justa, however, was not Pérez, but Fernández. See "La familia condal de Carrión" by Gonzalo Mtz Díez, Congreso de Palencia, Tomo III, p. 588-589. He says that Justa, wife of Asur Díaz, with her son Diego make a donation to Sahagún (doc. 648) in 1065. On Diego Ansúrez, it quotes "ego Iuxta Fredinandiz una cum filio meo Didaco Assuriz" Gonzalo Mtz Díez goes on to say that Diego Ansúrez had properties in Asturias which he had inherited from his mother Justa, grand-daughter of Ansur Sarracinez "Ego ...Didacus Ansuriz comes....secundum illa uirificauit comite Ansur Sarazinis auius mater mea comitissa Iusta" (Auius used not just for grandfather, but sometimes for great- or great-great-grandfather). Salazar y Acha in his article on the Osorios, p. 154, says that Justa was the second wife of Ansur Díaz and that she was the daughter of Fernando Flaínez and that when she became a widow, she retired to the family's monastery of San Martín de Pereda. Again, in 1076, march 26 in the Cathedral of Oviedo, count Diego Ansúrez makes a donation saying that he had inherited it from his mother Justa's grandfather, called Ansur Sarracínez. Yet, if Justa was the daughter of Fernando Flaínez and Elvira Peláez, I cannot find this Ansur Sarracínez in the family tree, unless he was (and this is because the only "blank" space I have in Justa's family tree) the father of count Rodrigo Gutiérrez's wife, whose name is unknown, parents of Pelayo Rdz, father of Elvira Peláez. On Elo, I don't have more on her, except that, as the charter dated 1149 mentions, Sancha González had a grandmother named Vita (Elo "congomento" Vita???) Alfonso who, would be a different person, of course, from the Elo Alfonso (daughter of count Alfonso Muñoz & Aldonza Glz) who was married to Pedro Ansúrez. That was a slip on my part - I meant to say Justa Fernández. Torres Sevilla agrees that Pedro was by the first wife (whose name she doesn't know) and Diego is by Justa, and by implication, the mother of the other sons remains unknown. As to Ansur Sarracinez being grandfather of Pelayo Rodriguez, I see a charter in which the two witnessed one after the other. He looks to be a contemporary of Pelayo, and not two generations earlier, but as you say, the pedigree is pretty full back to that point. Agricolae (talk) 02:51, 1 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Fernando Díaz de Haro and the Haro Family descended from Diego Lopez V

Hi Maragm,

I know you are very interested in this subject so I wanted to ask you whether it would be correct to assume the son of Fernando Diaz would the successor to this line as head of house even though they lost all their claim to Biscay (I put him as Diego Lopez VI because I dont know why else he would be named in the head of house fashion). Maria Diaz then became the head of house following the accidental death of Diego Lopez IV, transfering power to her son, Juan Yanez de Castilla y Haro, who was killed after a brief stint in power sending the title back to Maria. Would the title then revert back to the line of Diego Lopez V and his family as he was the brother of Lope Diaz III. I found an interesting article that pinpoints the downfall of the Haro's to one incident where Lope Diaz III "allegedly" was assassinated while threatening Sancho IV with a drawn sword [1] (Los ricoshombres y el rey en Castilla: el linaje Haro (1076-1322)). The article chronicles the Haros up until Lope Diaz IV who actually still held title over Orduña, Balmaseda, Belmonte de Miranda and Villalba de Losa, some of which were conceded by Ferdinand IV himself. The before mentioned article claims their line went extinct as he died without descendants, but Lope Diaz IV actually had a brother Ferdinand who inherited those titles upon his death and passed them on to his son, the before mentioned "Diego Lopez VI" I can only assume he was named Diego Lopez because he was meant to be the successor to this line. Further, this page, [2](REGIMEN MUNICIPAL EN VIZCAYA EN LOS SIGLOS XIII y XIV: EL SEÑORÍO DE LA VILLA DE ORDUÑA), chronicling the history of Orduna, fails to bring clarity to this question for lack of record during the time in question... any thoughts? --ClarkSui (talk)

Hi ClarkSui, I'm more familiar with the early Haros, not so much these ones. What I have is that Juana Núñez de Lara (daughter of Juan Núñez de Lara and María de Haro, who married Tello Alfonso (son of Alfonso XI and Leonor de Guzmán) called themselves señores de Vizcaya. Juana was made a prisoner by king Pedro I in 1359 and was executed in Seville in 1359. I have a quote from a charter in the Monastery of Leyre dated 20 december 1353 when Tello and Juana, as señores de Vicaya, made a donation to the monastery. Tello did not have any legitimate issue (plenty of illegitimate children). In his will dated 1370, he left Vizcaya and Valmaseda to his brother Enrique and I have a note that the title of Señor de Vizcaya was then given by king Henry to his son Juan (future Juan I of Castile), so the title was assumed by the crown.. I'm sorry I can't be of much help here, but no, I don't think Fernando Díaz had any claim to the title. I would also suggest you change Juan Yáñez de Castilla y Haro and perhaps eliminate the "Yáñez" since he was better known by the other names. I know that the crown took possession of Biscay, I just dispute the disappearance of that line of the family regardless of the loss of Biscay. I also took the liberty of fixing about five typos on the Spanish original. Last of all, I've got a history question. There is a line in the Spanish article: "todos conformando las arras entregadas previamente por Alfonso VIII a Berenguela con motivo de su matrimonio." Now, my understanding of the arras is that they're given by the groom to the bride. If so, then instead of Alfonso VIII here (Berengaria's father) it should be Alfonso IX (of León, her husband). Lope Díaz de Haro

Hey Maragm, thanks for your insight here. With regard to Lope Díaz de Haro, son of Diego López V de Haro, you are right, I only named him such in the thinking of the family line instead of the actual title holder but understand that there are doubtless others with the same name. In terms of consistency with other English language biographies when this comes up, I think it makes more sense to go with his title after the name. Note that I refer only to the English wiki and believe that the Spanish wiki should follow whatever format is more typical there. Will make your suggested changes.

Just curious, if a fictitious "Pablo Gonzalez de el Sótano" from a different house were to have theoretically assumed this title after Diego Lopez V, would his name then be changed to Pablo Gonzalez VI de Haro? Greetings Maragm. Many thanks for the pic. Not sure which appeals to me most: the cat itself or the file title... However, before getting down to the res, I'd just like to point out that you are mistaken in thinking that I actually have a heart to soften.

Regarding the template you ask about, the exact equivalent is {{under construction}}: "article is currently in the middle of an expansion or major revamping, but I prefer {{in use}}: "article is undergoing a major edit for a short while". These are standard templates provided by Twinkle, an excellent gadget which I strongly recommentd you adopt. Among the several frustrations I came up against over at es:wiki is that TW no longer works there and, despite my requests, no-one seems interested in solving the problem...

As for autopatrolled, a) you can check your "status" by clicking "Preferences" at top right of your page (next to "Watchlist"). You can see what the available access levels are here, and b) the criteria for "autopatrolled" normally requires "prior creation of 50 valid articles, not including redirects or disambiguation pages". You (or anyone) can request it here, but as you haven't – yet – reached that number, I'm not all that sure you'd get it. On the other hand, the above-mentioned "50 valid articles" is a "suggested standard" and administrators can use their discretion in granting it. Buenos días. Ponce de León, al descender de Ponce Vélaz, era de origen visigodo, descendiente (supuestamente) de Audecanem, duque de Cantabria (ver Piferrer, genealogía.) Así mismo, Vermudo y Nuño son nombres germánicos. Parece que el nombre Oveco es sinónimo de Ovidio.

Referente al nombre Vela, que viene del visigodo Veila (Vegila), algunos autores han dicho siempre erróneamente que podía tener su origen en el vascuence 'bela' cuervo, que es falso (ver Meñaca y su estudio sobre el linaje de los Velas)- incluso en la propia página de la Real Academia de Lengua Vasca, señalan que Vela (o Bela) procede lógicamente de Beila, "Nombre surgido del visigodo Vigila"

Pietje96 Salazar y Acha, says otherwise and he is a pretty reputable genealogist and medievalist. Piferrer is not reliable and has been surpassed by modern genealogists and historians. Vermudo, is probably of Suevo origin. Menudo estropicio ha causado usted en el artículo del famoso e ilustrísimo explorador, tal y como su referencia incongruente del origen vasco de los nombres Oveco y Vela. Dicho 'medievalista', Salazar, refiere a un supuesto origen del nombre vasco 'Vela', cuando en la propia academia de la lengua vasca, como le acabo de exponer, dicen lo contrario. Vascos. 55, 2, 2010. 499-566. Enfatiza: “Todo ello nos lleva a concluir, como ya anticipó Menéndez Pidal, que existe un solo nombre, de origen visigótico, que evoluciona gráficamente a través de nuestra documentación, desde Vigila a Vela, que no parece tener nada que ver con el vasco vela 'cuervo', y que tiene una vida paralela a la de Velasco (<vasc. Berasco), con el que acabará confluyendo.” Revise la etimología de la familia de los Velas (Veila, Beguila, Vigila etc..), más allá del sufijo germánico -ila (que aparece en los reyes visigodos Suintila, Chintila, Agila y hasta en el padre de Don Pelayo, Favila) el Vigila lo encontramos incluso en el monje de la crónica albedense, y en el año 957 en Wigila, que era presbítero, y aparece como actor de la revuelta contra el conde Wilfredo II en el condado de Besalú. ¡No sabía que el nombre Vermudo, germánico, podría ser Suevo!
