Infobox help

Joydeep ghosh, {{infobox shopping mall}} is set up to automatically add maps based on coordinates in Wikidata. Since this is a new article, it is not yet in WD. Joydeep ghosh, I know very little about WD and don't know if it will be put in WD automatically or how long it will take. Again, you may want to ask at the help desk. The infobox at Adelaide Central Plaza looks different because it is using {{Infobox building}} - which is not specific to shopping malls. I would say that is the wrong infobox since Adelaide Central Plaza seems to be more of a shopping center than a generic building. Some types of buildings have specific infoboxes (e.g. hotel, hospital) and non-historic buildings just use the building infobox. You may want to "fix" this and change it to the shopping mall infobox. Joydeep ghosh, I did a little clean-up on the article. It is "live" as it is part of the encyclopedia in main space. If you mean that it doesn't show up in google searches, that is because it is not INDEXED yet. That will not happen until it is reviewed by a wp:New Page Patroller which can take a while - there are thousands of new article waiting to be reviewed. MB 18:09, 2 January 2020 (UTC)

Image duplication

Hi MB, I've found several pages with duplicated first images. The problem occurred when "|logo" was changed to "|image", and "|caption" to "|image_caption". I have fixed a couple, by adding "|logo =" before "|image". This dummy logo line prevents it re-using the image as a logo. These were "Charles H. Roe" and "Carlyle Works". Two others I found were "John Musgrave & Sons" and "Chenard-Walcker" (not fixed).

I noticed that these all say "MB" and "fix infobox maint error". I see you are a prolific editor. I wonder how many more need adjustment. Is there an easy way to correct them all? Thanks. 2.31.255.216 (talk) 00:59, 6 January 2020 (UTC)

That is a bug in the template for {{Infobox company}}. It should not be necessary to put in a "dummy" |logo=. I've reported this at the template talkpage and hopefully it will be fixed soon.MB 01:47, 6 January 2020 (UTC)

McCoy Farmstead

Hi, in your edit adding an NRHP infobox to McCoy Farmstead (Holly Hill, South Carolina), you introduced a reference to the NRIS database, which was not in fact your source. You referenced a 2010 version of NRIS, but no available version of NRIS that we know of covers that site, which was NRHP-listed in 2019, right? I just wonder if you could please revise the article to fix that.

BTW, it was me that created the article, and maybe/probably I should not have, as it turned out I could not find any good references to develop it. I think i was trying to respond to someone's request at wt:NRHP for help adding recently-listed items to the county list-articles, and I tried to go further.

Doncram, done. I didn't notice that you created the article. I was responding to the "needs-infobox" request. I just did a copy/paste of a infobox from a neighboring property and edited the information from the county list - that is where I got the address and coords. The ref was just leftover.
And I just noticed that the article says Holly Hill, SC, but the county list says Orangeburg, and the weekly listing (the only ref we have so far) says Holly Hill vicinity. If the coords are correct, it is 30 mi from Orangeburg and in an unincorporated area just outside of Holly Hill. Magicpiano updated the county list; should I change the location there to Holly Hill?

MB, thanks for your diligence at Stamford, Connecticut. Looking at the history, I see both User:RepublicanFan and User:RepublicanFan2 have edited the article, with one reverting the other here. This doesn't look like a lost password scenario (since their edits overlap), and I don't know if this is two different users (with one impersonating the other) or a good hand, bad hand scenario. Kinu, I hadn't noticed the second account, and haven't been watching Stamford, Connecticut at all until I found this new editor adding OR/unsourced/unencyclopedic content to several Connecticut articles. Terminatorwil, I only made some minor formatting fixes. You should have directed this to DGG, or asked for help at the Teahouse where you would have been pointed to various resources for new editors. I took a quick glance at the article; the second sentence is promotional and not encylopedic. The number of Youtube views is not sourced as is the entire Early life section. Everything should be neutral-sounding and supported with references so anyone can verify the accuracy. You mentioned "your research"; remember you can only summarize what has been written in other sources. DGG may have more comments. MB 23:44, 21 February 2020 (UTC)
This seems more understanding than just moving anything to an article space and not mentioning the main sentences to be edited. For the youtube views, I have mentioned his youtube channel link in the external link. Isn't that enough for the authenticity as youtube itself has written the original view count of his page. Terminatorwil, The burden is on an editor to follow the policies. There is an incredible amount of vandalism and spam every day and not that many volunteers to cope with it all. You may want to look at YFA. As far as the Youtube issue, anything in the article should have a direct citation, expecting a reader to hunt through the external links section is not acceptable. Furthermore, I recall conversation that Youtube views can be easily manipulated. I would just remove it entirely if it hasn't been published in a unaffiliated secondary source. Bold redirects

SMcCandlish, your discussion at WP:T made me think that creating {{BoldIR}} (bold incoming redirect) to be used, at the first instance of a redirect, to apply the bold markup would prevent the bolding from being removed if it was otherwise not obvious why it was bolded. (I may have inadvertently removed some valid "bolding for redirects" while cleaning up excessive "bolding for emphasis" that sometimes happens.) If this template also created a section anchor, it might keep help Wikipedia:Database reports/Broken section anchors from growing as fast. Thoughts? Should I propose this at WP:VPR? Not sure which discussion you mean; WP:T goes to the Wikipedia:Tutorial page. Such a template is not a bad idea, in its essence, though there are some technical considerations of the additional features to think about. I'm not 100% sure what you mean by "If this template also created a section anchor"; sections are auto-anchored by the parsing of the == or whatever markup. If you just mean #foo anchors, which would generally render as <span id="foo">...</span> around the anchored term (or <span id="foo"></span> immediately in front of it), that might be possible, but arguably of dubious utility. We likely don't want to link to the exact spot in mid-sentence where the redirect-from term was used in the article, but rather to the section containing it, for context. We do sometimes have {{R to anchor}} instead of {{R to section}} cases, but these are generally to tables, list items, or other discrete blocks of content that just don't happen to have separate subheadings. Another problem with auto-anchoring from a template like {{BoldIR}} would be that if the page already has a heading (or other anchor) by this name, and the template is inserted above it (e.g., because the term is first used in the lead section in the article, despite having its own entire section lower down in the article body), then the template would "usurp" all incoming links to that section (the target ID of which would be changed on the fly to something like foo-2.

That said, the general idea of marking up the first-occurrence-boldfacing of a term that redirects to the article is good, though I don't think I would call this "BoldIR", except maybe as a template shortcut; we're not regularly using camelcase like that in template names, and have been moving them (especially ones used by reader-editors in mainspace, to more plain-English names. So, something like {{redirect bold}} or {{bold redirect}} might be better. I'm not sure there is any cure for WP:Database reports/Broken section anchors, other than doing something on the MediaWiki code side: it could have "smarts" in the background that auto-fix these things, the same way Windows updates shortcuts and macOS updates aliases when you move the target file/directory (in contrast to symlinks which just break, in *n*x, Windows, and macOS alike).

I have actually though before about instituting a simple {{redirect bold}} myself, but it would probably need to do something unique and practical, like add a hidden maintenance category ("Category:Articles with incoming redirects boldfaced in the text"? I dunno – do we have any actual use for tracking such a matter?), or it would get TfDed. I can't think of any templates we're keeping that just serve as markers/indicators to editors, i.e. as alternative to HTML comments. Even {{Not a typo}} can use {{sic}} for string obfuscation to prevent auto-correction by tools like AWB. One thing such a template as we're considering could do is add a new CSS class, so that people who don't like the style of bold-facing the first occurrence of redirected terms can change it to font-weight: inherit; in their own user CSS.

Yes, I guess I meant #foo anchors (I have only ever added them with {{anchor}}).

So you agree that such a template (and sure, my name was just off-the-cuff) would be useful as a way to bold and provide a kind of inline documentation of the reason for the bolding.

My thought about a secondary role of providing an automatic anchor was to try to "encourage" the use of anchors for redirects. Of course, I mean the kind of redirects that should go to certain sections (not redirects for different spellings, capitalizations, and the like for which the correct target is the article itself and bolding is not applicable). I don't have any stats, but I would guess that a very large percentage of redirects that could/should go to a sub-section just go to the article. And many that once went to a sub-section (via direct link to the header) are broken as evidenced by the report. So more anchors are good. And making it easier to add anchors would result in more anchors. I get your point that sometimes the anchor location should be a different section that the first bolded use - the template would need to have a |make anchor=yes/no to handle this (we would have to pick a default).

As far as the other problem you mentioned - that the anchor should be put before the section header, not mid-section where the term is bolded - I haven't experienced the operation you described. I just experimented and if I put an anchor in the middle of a section of text, viewing a link to the anchor for me displays the entire section (but not the header (title)). It does not go to the "exact spot mid-sentence" like you said. Is this unique to my browser perhaps? If what I see is repeatable and universal, although not ideal, it may better than no anchor. Maybe we could get a bot to find these "auto-mid-section-anchors" added by this template and just move the anchor to before the prior section heading. MB 03:21, 22 February 2020 (UTC)

I get the point, but I am getting more EXPLICIT permissions now. I thought that these two photos EACH had a suitable permission for public fair use: Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 2.0 Generic (CC BY-NC-SA 2.0) license. MaynardClark, I'm really not an expert in image licensing. Most images must be licensed with at least CC 2.5. There are differences for Flickr images, but they still have to allow commercial reuse. There is no way to "validate" a image differently - it has to be released by the copyright holder with an acceptable license. And no one can do anything about that except the owner. Dan Feltes page help

Hi MB!

My name is Emma and I work on the Dan Feltes campaign. In accordance with the COI guidelines, I am hoping you could help me make a few additions to his page. I noticed several other pages for both senate majority leaders and prominent legal practitioners in other states have "Awards and accolades" sections on their articles. In an effort to make Dan's page more complete, I've drafted this section for his page complete with citations. Could you possibly review these proposed edits and institute them on the article page if they are ok?

Dan has received several Legislator of the Year awards for bipartisan leadership on many critical issues, including from Ski NH for his work promoting tourism and the ski industry and from New Hampshire Council on Development Disabilities for his work helping persons with disabilities. Additionally he has received recognition from the New Hampshire Home Builders Association for his advocacy on behalf of the home building and remodeling industry[1].Housing Action NH recognized Feltes as a 2016 Home Matters in New Hampshire, specifically for his work on an important appropriation to New Hampshire's Affordable Housing Fund[2]. Feltes also received New Hampshire Public Health Association's Friend of Public Health Award in 2018 for being "instrumental in practicing and/or promoting public health in the state" [3].

Merilla33455, you seem to misunderstand. An orphan article is one which has no links to it from other article in the encyclopedia. Currently, there are no links from article space to this article. You can confirm this with the "What links here" tool. The tag is correct and should remain unless a link to this article is added. MB 03:04, 9 April 2020 (UTC)

You have to find another article in the encyclopedia that can is connected in some way with your article and put a link to in in the other article. But this can only be done if there is a reasonable reason to mention the subject in some other article. But since the article has been deleted, this is now moot. MB 15:27, 9 April 2020 (UTC)

Chris.sherlock, That was a mistake. The only intentional change I made was to manually change the caption as I said in the edit summary and did again in the next edit. I had been looking at the script changes made by another editor and started editing a prior revision without realizing it. I believe the warning "You are editing an old revision of this page" was standardized in the last year (I think it used to be in red) and I didn't notice it. Sorry. MB 16:32, 12 April 2020 (UTC)

However I think the sources which were used as a basis for my main changes in the new map, like the expansion towards the Iranian province of Sistan, Haryana, Indian Punjab and Kashmir were removed. My concern here is that more than half of the citations in the article come from a single source, which is a promotional web page originally developed by the City of St. Louis, Missouri. Swickouski, It was not clear. It would have helped if this explanation had been put on the article's talk page. The template you added is usually used at the top of an article when much of the article is unsourced. If there is a specific section without source, you can tag that section with {{unsourced|section}}. For a problem with a source as you describe here, {{better source needed}} is the best tag (see [2] for usage}}. MB 02:41, 22 April 2020 (UTC)

Carrolquadrio, Just look at the infobox after my edits. The heritage designation info goes into a separate embedded designation list, not parameters of the building infobox. I went ahead and added the basic maps that are supported natively by the infobox. You just add the name of the map(s) and they appear if the coordinates are specified, which they were. There are ways to add an OSM map to an infobox, but I don't remember exactly how - I would have to go searching for an article that uses one. It is possible. MB 03:02, 28 April 2020 (UTC)

Winstanley Estate Review Outcome?

Hi, I apologise if this comes across as harassment (which it definitely is not intended as) and only want to ask you a couple of questions based on your "review" of the oage Winstanley Estate. It's been a couple of days now, but I had a notification that the page had been "reviewed". Were you reviewing it because I had nominated it for a Good Article? Or was it something else- if so would you mind telling me what it was for? If it was for a good article or another topic was there an outcome for that review/any improvements that could be made to the page? I'm only asking these questions because it was a bit unclear from the initial notification.

Kip1234, I reviewed it to accept is as a new article into the encyclopedia. Most new articles need to be reviewed (there are currently about 10,000) in the queue. descriptions

Hey, MB! I got a message a while back from whoever is an expert in these things telling me that the short descriptions should start with lowercase unless the word itself required uppercase. Like it would be 'hockey player from the US' but 'US hockey player'. Is that not correct? —valereee (talk) 00:07, 27 June 2020 (UTC)

Valereee, not per my understanding. I quoted directly from WP:Short description and that seems pretty clear to me: always start with uppercase. I have added hundreds of SDs and always start with uppercase per that guideline and have never been reverted before (to my knowledge). I have also imported hundreds of SD from Wikidata with the short-description-helper (gadget, I think) and it automatically uppercases the first letter. And if you look at an example of an article with an auto-generated SD, like Chandler High School (Arizona), you'll see it is upper case there too. MB 00:19, 27 June 2020 (UTC)
