E.F. Calthrop

Hi,

I noticed a recent edit on The Art of War article regarding British officer, E.F. Calthrop. As something of an afficionado on the topic, I have been unable to find much information at all on E.F. Calthrop, despite my best efforts. I have worked on articles for other Victorian-era sinologists, namely Frederic H. Balfour, Herbert Giles, and Lionel Giles.

Were you planning on creating a biography stub for E.F. Calthrop? If so, would you mind sharing the name of your reference material with me? I am working on the introduction for a new volume of Sun Tzu's work in print, and I would love to spend some time reading about E.F. Calthrop.

• I'm sorry if this sounds rude, but are you seriously asking me to cite a source on something that any Chinese child could have told you? I mean, some things are just in Chinese cultural lore. Wikipedia can be frustrating, there is material I have been unable to source but know is true and have been thus unable to place in a Featured Article. Seriously, if the book spells out they are more like zombies than vampires or something along those lines please revert me and use the book as a ref. Use the 'cite book' format above (rightmost little box above the editing screen. You don't sound rude, and I am sure it is alot more obvious to you. In your note to me, you claim I'm changing the plot so that it ends up being incorrect.

The sentence, as I originally wrote it, read "Following his father's death, Arthur Clennam returns from China, bearing a pocket watch the dying man urged his son to deliver to Mrs. Clennam."

Your most recent version states, "Arthur Clennam returns from China with his father's pocket watch and delivers it to Mrs. Clennam, as Mr. Clennam's dying wish was for the watch to go to Arthur's mother."

• But Mr. Clennam didn't urge Arthur to deliver the watch to Mrs. Clennam; he told Arthur to give it to Arthur's mother, who isn't Mrs. Clennam. My sentence actually describes what happened without ever stating outright that Mrs. Clennam is Arthur's mother. • Actually, I wasn't the person who really created that page, 96.31.65.82 was. He/she just completely replaced the old information (i.e., about the singer) with information about the character. Article upgrade assistance request (Pre-translation stage)

This is in reference to a relatively new umbrella article on en-wikipedia named Ceremonial pole. Ceremonial pole is a human tradition since ancient times; either existed in past at some point of time, or still exists in some cultures across global continents from north to south & from east to west. Ceremonial poles are used to symbolize a variety of concepts in several different world cultures.

Through article Ceremonial pole we intend to take encyclopedic note of cultural aspects and festive celebrations around Ceremonial pole as an umbrella article and want to have historical, mythological, anthropological aspects, reverence or worships wherever concerned as a small part.

While Ceremonial poles have a long past and strong presence but usually less discussed subject. Even before we seek translation of this article in global languages, we need to have more encyclopedic information/input about Ceremonial poles from all global cultures and languages. And we seek your assistance in the same.

Hi, thanks for your response. The sense of WP:BLP is that aspects should be mentioned in a context where they are relevant to the 'encyclopaedic' issues they relate to. Thus to mention a politician's sexuality in the context of his or her marriage, where there is no evidence that that sexuality had any impact or relevance to the marriage, would be WP:UNDUE (see here - "biographies should be pared back to a version that is completely sourced, neutral, and on-topic" (my emphasis); to mention it in the context of their political career, where there is evidence that it did have some impact, is y the same token appropriate. In the case we are discussing, the issue is mentioned and referenced in the section dealing with that part of his political career which it affected. I'm afraid you haven't taken my point. There is no evidence that the subject's past sex life has affected his marriage in any way, or that he has been involved in any extramarital sexual activities, either heterosexual or homosexual. That is why the topic should not be raised in the article in the context of his marriage. To suggest or hint otherwise is not only against WP standards, but is in fact potentially libellous. It is for such reasons that WP editors must be exceptionally scrupulous. I don't intend to extend this discussion further unless there is any further manifestation of it in the article. Translation help

The "Mazu Cultural Palace" in Songjiang's Fangta Park, where you can get free soy milk and youtiao if you show up at the right times.

Since you were kind/foolish enough to have your name on this list, here's a note that I could use some help with the mess of Mazu temples in Shanghai. There were three; the first two were destroyed; the third got moved to Songjiang and rebuilt; and then as of 2014 Zhabei was considering rebuilding their old one. So:

• The Shanghai Archives has an article on the history of the Zhabei/Songjiang temple whose citation I've already formatted for you but whose facts need to be translated and added to the Songjiang Tianfei Palace article and tagged with {{sfnp|Feng|2008}}.
• The article is wrong on the date of the move to Songjiang but might be right that it was built in 1883 rather than originally demolished then as claimed here. It'd be nice if you had time to see if there was another official source. The temple's own official site doesn't mention it.
• The archive article and this article and (obliquely) this "About Us" page suggest that Zhabei District is rebuilding or has already rebuilt a fourth Mazu temple near the site of their former one. It would be nice if you had time to poke around and see if you can find anything official on the subject that I could use to create an article on it.
• Ditto any information about the other two original Mazu temples in Shanghai.

Can you help verify translations of articles from Chinese

Would you be able to help evaluate the accuracy of translations of Wikipedia articles from Chinese to English Wikipedia?

This would involve evaluating a translated article on the English Wikipedia by comparing it to the original Chinese article, and marking it "Pass" or "Fail" based on whether the translation faithfully represents the original. Here's the reason for this request:

There are a number of articles on English Wikipedia that were created as machine translations from different languages including Chinese , using the Content Translation tool, sometimes by users with no knowledge of the source language. The config problem that allowed this to happen has since been fixed, but this has left us with a backlog of articles whose accuracy of translation is suspect or unknown, including some articles translated from Chinese. In many cases, other editors have come forward later to copyedit and fix any English grammar or style issues, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the translation is accurate, as factual errors from the original translation may remain. To put it another way: Good English is not the same as good translation.

If you can help out, that would be great. Here's a sample of the articles that need checking:

• Abacus checkers
• Ahronglong Sakinu
• Airport North Station

All you have to do, is compare the English article to the Chinese article, and mark it "Pass" or "Fail" (templates {{Pass}} and {{Fail}} may be useful). (Naturally, if you feel like fixing an inaccurate translation and then marking it "Pass", that's even better, but it isn't required.)

You should've emailed me. And you need to link the original text you're translating from. The first line is wrong: Bide here means to follow, not believe. The line about rhymes isn't special syllables, but 押韻. The line about honoring the old ones is missing. The lines about werewolves are missing. The line about winds from the west is wrong. Apart from the elder, the rest of what the different kinds of wood is missing.
