The busy bee on WP:RD

A few of the questions I've posed lately, e.g. about the North Carolina courts, have to do with the novel I'm working on. Most, however, are just things that come to me when I'm reading or watching tv. From the variety of my questions you've answered, your interests seem to be equally catholic. I've a page of my RD questions and answers here, which I keep because its too hard to use the regular archive. We've been here about the same length of time, but I don't think I've seen you. Your work on physics doesn't seem to overlap much with my areas (see User:PedanticallySpeaking/Articles for my list of articles). If I can help in your work, let me know. Fremont marker question

The following is an email I received to this question...

I checked with our Historic Preservation guru, Rich Koopmann, and he had the following to offer.

• since the Toll family lived and operated a ranch here along S. Boulder Creek and up toward the ski area for years...could this be a livestock brand?
• Not sure of the ties to John C. Fremont, but some possibilities that come to mind may be an association with John Q. Rollins (founder of Rollinsville) who built the first wagon road over the Continental Divide into Middle Park right thru this area. Later came the narrow guage railroad thru the Needles Eye tunnel and over Rollins Pass at Corona, and later the Moffat tunnel for the Denver Rio Grande Western railroad of today plus the water conveyance of west slope water into S. Boulder Creek. Could the symbol have some association with a railroad? There also were the Early Bird and Black Hills Mines toward the lower end of the road that could have some association.
• A couple of resources come to mind who may have further information.....Dan Straight, who is the President of the Rollins Pass group trying to get the road re-opened thru the Neddles Eye Tunnel. He knows considrable amounts of historical information about that area [phone] , or Doc Teegarden, former Sheriff's Officer and POS volunteer, who has researched and located many of the remote and less known gravesites throughout Boulder County [phone]. That is about all I can come up with for now.

OK, I have finally finished translating the German Planck article. Now, if sooner or later you find a bit of time, please could you proofread the mess ? I can only write funny non-native English, and in some cases I could absolutely not find out how to properly translate something (usually I have to write only about physics/mathematics in English). Copyright Violations

Hi Laura. I'm very new to Wikipedia, and I was just testing out some of the pages I created with some info that were found on the web. It wasn't done intentionally. But I see now there are possible copyright violations on two of the pages I created. Maybe I should have just written "Testing page" on there instead. On the Poker Texas Holdem page, I revised it. And the page No Limit Texas Holdem, I am going to add new content to that page in the temp subpage. Should I just leave that page out and create a new one???

Uni Hedelberg - Charles Uni (grammar)

hi Laura, maybe you´re right. The problem was, that the change you made to the page - sound seggestively (to me:). I´ll try to explain it. On October 19, 1386 the first lecture was held. Thus, the University of Heidelberg is the oldest German University (although some count Charles University in Prague instead). When you read it - it sounds like if "the people who consider the oldest one the Charles Uni" are wrong. Maybe I dont have the "feeling" for english, but it sounds to me this (suggestive) way.

I´ll take back the page´s history to "your version" and ...if you think Im right please wright it some grammar-OK way;) I would wright it this way "althoug some sources consider the oldest one the Charles Uni"?

thanks for that, I wasn't aware of the simplfied space, but it seems exactly like I had had in mind!

But, how are people supposed to find this space? I've browsed Wikipaedia quite a lot, although this is my first few days contributing, and I never came across it. There should be a cross-linking system of some kind.

And you're right, the simple QM article is awful! I'll do something about it ASAP.

Laser/maser categories

Re: your note on my talk page: I understand your argument. What I was mainly trying to do was clean up cases where articles and subcategories either appeared in both category:optics and category:optical devices, or appeared in neither. The lasers subcategory and the masers article should be in one and only one of these categories, not both. The laser article, as the defining article of category:lasers, belongs in both the latter category and its parent category, whichever that is.

I think it would be better to move anything that is primarily a device based on optics into category:optical devices. My inclination would actually be to move simple optics like lenses out of category:optical devices and into category:optics, on the grounds that I don't normally think of a lens as a "device", but rather as an optical "element". Not sure what the best approach is, but I would like the categorization to be more consistent than it has been.

Another issue: I'm not sure actually that masers belong in either category, being rf/microwave devices. They definitely belong in category:lasers, but perhaps should not be in any other optical category. Maybe there is some appropriate RF/microwave category. (Note though that if they are categorized as if they were purely microwave devices user:cypa will be upset. There are non-microwave, RF masers.) --Srleffler 21:32, 19 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Talk:D'Alembert operator

Hi Laura, you said here that ${\displaystyle \Box }$ and ${\displaystyle \Box ^{2}}$ are always used for the same thing, but it seems that ${\displaystyle \Box }$ is also sometimes used as the covariant derivative. At least that is what the article now says. All in all there are now a lot of conflicting notations used. Any ideas about cleaning this up? --MarSch 10:25, 21 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Well if you're gonna ask me, I'd stick with math notation and only mention that physicists have their own notation and what they use. Then I wouldn't use it in the rest of the article. That means ${\displaystyle \Delta }$ for the D'Alembertian and ∇ for a covariant derivative. Is that acceptible? :) --MarSch 16:32, 21 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I don't exactly understand what you mean by "Do you guys use ${\displaystyle \nabla _{\mu }}$ type notation to distinguish from the Laplacian?". I prefer using ${\displaystyle \nabla _{\mu }}$ to ${\displaystyle \partial _{\mu }}$, because I like to distinguish between covariant derivatives and partial derivatives. ${\displaystyle \partial _{\mu }}$ is only the Levi-Civita connection on flat spaces. I guess that would work here since Minkowski space is flat, but I recon that the D'Alembertian is also useful/used on curved solutions of Einstein's equation. --MarSch 16:57, 21 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I have nominated as original research but feel that it is important to solicit additional opinions on the matter before an administrator is forced to make a decision. As I mention in the discussion on the [[AfD page - I think the underlying idea - to discuss the impact of classical Newtonian physics has had on other discpiplines and the impact that QM should (but in many cases has not fully) had on those same disciplines - is an interesting one; however, I need help in determining if existing article should be the starting point for such a discussion (or if this topic is covered elsewhere).
