March Madness 2017

G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 March and runs until 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017, so please sign up now.

2017 Military Historian of the Year and Newcomer of the Year nominations and voting

As we approach the end of the year, the Military History project is looking to recognise editors who have made a real difference. Each year we do this by bestowing two awards: the Military Historian of the Year and the Military History Newcomer of the Year. The co-ordinators invite all project members to get involved by nominating any editor they feel merits recognition for their contributions to the project. User group for Military Historians

Greetings,

"Military history" is one of the most important subjects when speak of sum of all human knowledge. To support contributors interested in the area over various language Wikipedias, we intend to form a user group. It also provides a platform to share the best practices between military historians, and various military related projects on Wikipedias. An initial discussion was has been done between the coordinators and members of WikiProject Military History on English Wikipedia. Now this discussion has been taken to Meta-Wiki. Contributors intrested in the area of military history are requested to share their feedback and give suggestions at Talk:Discussion to incubate a user group for Wikipedia Military Historians.

April 2018 Milhist Backlog Drive

I think that someone as inexperienced as you are on WP should exercise more caution when pursuing such controversial topics. First, nothing on WP is "legally" anything. We don't have laws, we have policies & guidelines. You should famiarize yourself with them before you start revert-warring established and stable content, especially while there is no consensus supporting your edit and there is active discussion taking place and, while arguing with and posting personal attacks against experienced editors that are undeserving of such. You have just stepped into a long-term and wide-spread dispute involving many editors and many articles, and I can assure you that your word will not suddenly be the final word on any of it. Feel free to engage in collegial talk page discussions, involve yourself in related projects (eg: WT:GUNS) and take part in any RfCs that come along, all working towards forming consensus. For someone so new to this project, you have a great deal of anger and hostility, not to mention a crappy attitude. Calling a spade a spade is not POV-pushing. The assertion that the AR-15 is an assault rifle is utterly uncontroversial in the entire world except the United States, b/c after the AWB, the gun lobby decided that they didn't like the term, cling to an outdated US Army technical definition that was made redundant with the adoption of the M16A2 which only features a burst feature and *not* fully automatic fire as the sole justification for saying that AR-15 type weapons are not assault rifles. And furthermore, the use of fully-automatic rifle fire is discouraged in infantry doctrine/training today. --KRAPENHOEFFER! TALK 20:41, 30 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I actually agree with much of what you've written here (not your opinions on other editors, but your comments about the M16A2 and US military doctrine). But that said, surely you see the distinction between a military/LE "assault rifle", even if only equipped with burst fire, and semi-auto only AR-15s intended for the civilian sporting market? M-16s with burst fire are still intended to kill enemy combatants (or armed & deadly criminals in the case of LE) with the most effective lethality as possible. AR-15s for civilians will never have burst fire capability. These types of rifles are only intended to kill animals or paper, not people. This is why so many feel the "assault" moniker is misplaced when applied to these rifles. Unfortunately, those in media and government that use the term "assault" when referring to these types of rifles do so in a manner that largely fails WP's neutrality policies. This is a fact lost of many here who seem to forget this is an encyclopaedia, not a platform for any personal or political agendas. April 2021 WikiProject Military History Reviewing Drive
