Svgalbertian (talk) 06:15, 15 January 2010 (UTC) SVG imagesHi, I think it is safe to say we all appreciate you efforts, but: What is the point of converting a .png file to a .svg?!?!? The point of an .svg is to have a "pure" image, sort of like having the source code of a program. But... if you don't have the source/SVG in the first place, then what exactly are you trying to do??? You can never get the "source" of an image by converting a .PNG. If you can get an .SVG from the developers (or from another place), then fine, we would love to have it here, but... converting a PNG to SVG is just completely pointless (at least in this case), and we even get a worse file. Don't get me wrong, your contributions are welcomed, but please don't convert bitmap files to SVG, that is not how things work. Regards, --SF007 (talk) 23:37, 13 January 2010 (UTC)

It didn't get normal quality (poor color). You can see an example here, a image considered good quality.
Your odd editsI suppose there's some reason why you've chased after the userpage edits of User:The Man in Question and systematically broken the image used in the template he inserted, without leaving any clear indication on the users page as to why you have done this. Perhaps you'd like to explain? Sane message left. Barking edit with misleading edit comment. --Tagishsimon (talk) 02:16, 18 January 2010 (UTC)

I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself. If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. File source problem with File:Htc new logo.svgThanks for uploading File:Htc new logo.svg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of that website's terms of use of its content. However, if the copyright holder is a party unaffiliated from the website's publisher, that copyright should also be acknowledged. If you have uploaded other files, consider verifying that you have specified sources for those files as well. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 16:44, 23 February 2010 (UTC) HP LogoSIR – At the top of this page is a charge to “be polite, assume good faith, avoid personal attacks and be welcoming;” indeed! As an employee of HP who works in marketing, I found the 3D logo to be a poor fit for the article. The 3D logo isn’t used company-wide, but rather by the PSG division, initially as a part of the “the computer is personal again” campaign. The 2D logo I provided was converted directly from an internal marketing PNG and is not only official, but of excellent quality. And, while you suggested it “doesn’t even look official,” it’s used quite regularly. The 3D logo is of poor quality – the gradients do not match those of the actual 3D logo and the shadowing (along of the right side of the P’s descender, for instance) is totally off. Can more detail really be a good thing when it’s not the right detail? The total effect is that we wouldn’t be willing to use the current 3D logo on any of our marketing material; it lacks polish. If you have access to HP’s internal site, there is a wealth of material on the proper representation and use of different expessions of the HP logo. Also, accurate, official and high quality examples of the logo can be found. As an addendum: I didn’t appreciate the tone of your message. I can assure you that nothing was “deliberately” disobeyed. The article doesn’t belong to you and contributions shouldn’t be responded to with hostility. Longevity at Wikipedia is not indicative of ability, taste or talent.--More Coreyander (talk) 07:39, 23 February 2010 (UTC) Yes i see you are accusing me of a personal attack but you did not even discuss a logo change on this article when changing logos with this drastic of a change unless it makes any "visible improvement" we usually come to a consensus on the article talk page, now when i said it "doesn't even look official" i meant the way it was displayed, there is no transparency around the circle for one, for two if you did use the company intranet you sourced your work wrong and cited brands of the world. The reason i was so perturbed was it took months of effort and work with my peers to get the 3d logo in there" and when you say the logo's shadowing dose not match, it is converted directly from an EPS as you did so there is no error, i have a computer where i see this logo at boot up so i know what it looks like, this particular logo is used on many desktop PCs thus i would see a point in keeping it here. now wyour 2 dimensional logo would go good replacing the older rectangular one at HP Enterprise Services due to the copratewide "shedding" of the rectangle, however i believe the 3d logo better represents the consumer brand. "when I said "delebratly" disobeyed the instructions there were inline notes asking to not downgrade the immage and you went and proceed anyway, without even notifying the author of the image, me, i loud expect at least that much and i would have done that for someone else, especially since there was a note. --Koman90 (talk), A+ (Verify) 01:30, 24 February 2010 (UTC) No, not of a personal attack, but certainly of an intemperate tone. If a lack of transparency is a problem for you, you could go ahead and add some. Whilst I did read that you converted directed from an EPS, my comments about the gradient and the shadowing stand. Here is a link to actual 3D logo (again from the company intranet): I’m sure you can spot the many differences. The shadowing simply is not parallel with the letters -- which is wrong and unpolished. I can supply you with a larger version of the above if you’d like to convert it to an SVG. A note on usage... the article Hewlett-Packard covers the entire company and their broad product portfolio. Only a small slice of the company and its business are in the consumer space; this is the PSG (Personal Systems Group) division. The 3D logo as used is essentially representative of this division only. You won’t see it used in our marketing materials towards businesses, for example. So I agree with you that the 3D logo better represents the consumer brand, but would point out that the article is not limited to that topic. As for inline notes... I don’t see them even now. But clearly downgrading is subjective.--More Coreyander (talk) 09:24, 24 February 2010 (UTC) That version looks similar to that of my older traced version i did notice that there are two version going around, a "glossy" version and a "dull" version, the reason i changed it is quality issues, any input you have is welcomed at this point. i apologize for the tone, being a student, an netwirk admin, a volunteer for an animal support orginization, and a wikipedian all at once is quite stressful. :| --Koman90 (talk), A+ (Verify) 02:21, 25 February 2010 (UTC) Just giving you a notice that File:Uei-logo.svg is up for speedy deletion because it is an orphaned fair-use image. Because of WP:NFCC, all non-free content must at least be used in one article. Please let me explain why I orphaned it. I noticed that it was an SVG, but it looked blurry (and for simple text, the file size was 111kb). After looking at it at 2000px, it was clear to me this was an autotrace of sorts. We gained nothing by going the SVG route. The raster artifacts were just duplicated. No more detail was added, and the file size was 30 times as large. Therefore, I restored the GIF, as it was an appropriately smaller file size, clearer, and a better representation of the logo. I'd urge you, in the future, when dealing with non-free content such as official logos, to source that content from official sources. I'll start looking to see if we can't track down a vector logo from the University, but an SVG conversion such as this actually deteriorates quality, while increasing file size. Hope this explains what I did. If you have any questions, I'd be glad to discuss this further. Thank you. -Andrew c [talk] 23:24, 25 February 2010 (UTC)
just curiouswhat your reasoning was behind welcoming a trolling sockpuppet[4]..and now that I look at it, several others. Custom is to only welcome accounts that get used for editing. Excessive welcoming of users who have made no contributions has been seen as disruptive in the past.--Crossmr (talk) 03:44, 28 February 2010 (UTC)
Speedy deletion nomination of File:Compass Card.jpgA tag has been placed on File:Compass Card.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section I7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a non-free image with a clearly invalid licensing tag; or it otherwise fails some part of the non-free content criteria. If you can find a valid tag that expresses why the image can be used under the fair use guidelines, please replace the current tag with that tag. If no such tag exists, please add the {{non-free fair use in|article name that the image is used in}} tag, along with a brief explanation of why this constitutes fair use of the image. If the image has been deleted, you can re-upload it, but please ensure you place the correct tag on it. If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding Hello, Koman90. You have new messages at Fastily's talk page.
You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{Talkback}} or {{Tb}} template. -FASTILY (TALK) 10:19, 28 February 2010 (UTC) Hi Charles. I do that, too. :) There's a pitfall to transcluding rather than substituting, though, that I don't know if you've encountered. Besides the fact that if you ever change that template it will change on every page it's linked to, it creates the odd situation of making the "edit" button to the section edit your subpage. I typically place user talk notices by editing the section above rather than opening the whole page, and I very nearly left you a note inadvertently when trying to leave one for User:MER-C...which then, of course, would have been left for every contributor for whom you've left that notice. If you do prefer to transclude rather than substitute, you might want to consider manually creating section headers to avoid that. And if you start getting notes there intended for others, well, that will probably be why. :D --Moonriddengirl (talk) 21:19, 5 March 2010 (UTC)

Thank you for uploading free images/media to Wikipedia! As you may know, there is another Wikimedia Foundation project called Wikimedia Commons, a central media repository for all free media. In future, please upload media there instead (see m:Help:Unified login). That way, all of the other language Wikipedias can use them too, as well as our many sister projects. This will also allow our visitors to search for, view and use our media in one central location. If you wish to move previous uploads to Commons, see Wikipedia:Moving images to the Commons (you may view previous uploads by going to your user contributions on the left and choosing the 'file' namespace from the drop down box (or see [5]). Please note that non-free content, such as images claimed as fair use, cannot be uploaded to the Wikimedia Commons. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media). PLEASE NOTE:

I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page. If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice? Melesse (talk) 23:16, 19 April 2010 (UTC) |
