ArbCom 2018 election voter message

Hello, Kmhkmh. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

No offense, but such a message as well as the associated tagging are a bit off and somewhat counterproductive. Instead of a formalistic tagging seemingly based on "I can't see a footnote". I'd suggest to actually take a look at the text and sources of the rather short article. The paragraph on the history of the theorem pretty much explicitly describes in which source you find which content. The gain of artificially (and somewhat redundantly) turning that into footnote ia about zero, although admittingly it would have avoided a(n automated) posting such as the above one.--21:02, 20 January 2019 (UTC)

That was a seriously uncool move. You knew from my edit summaries that Draft:Braid (film) existed, and rather than do the right thing and work on the draft and move that into Mainspace, you "went around" process, and created Braid (Film) (which is, incidentally, at the wrong disambiguation title). The "right thing" to do is not wasting of your time in Wikipedia on bugging/impairing editors extending encyclopedic content. Acting otherwise is something i'd describe as "uncool".

The "Ukraine, Nordstream pipeline" section as written (i.e., "echoing claims by the Russian and Chinese governments") reflects a distinct POV (guilt by association), bias or incomplete context at best. BLPs are held to a higher standard and written conservatively. The topic overall is also not pertinent to his biography, NOTNEWS, and reflects RECENTISM. Well you probably can remove the "echoing claims ..." part, but the text is properly sourced as far as I can see and I see absolutely no reason why we should have section about his opinion on Syria and Venezuela but not ukraine/Russia when Sachs was similarly outspoken on all of them. My concerns then were that you were addressing the dispute extremely casually, and not as if sanctions applied. Well for regular editing most people don't check RSP in fact i'd bet most editors aren't even aware of it (which probably holds for the discretionary sanctions list as well btw.). They just browse the most common policies at best and use common sense based on that. I think people working a lot in disputed areas often forget how far away the bureacracy around it might be from the other (average ?) editors. I probably looked at the RSN list less than 10 times in my 15 years of Wikipedia, usually in case when in a dispute over sources somebody was referencing it directly for his argument. Having looked at it again now, your are right it greenlighted VOA as a source in general, though my personal assessment is probably still a bit more skeptical than the note there. In any case it was/is somewhat obvious to me that in the given context (with Russia and the US the most likely suspects) an outlet directly owned by the suspected states aministrations is not a particular good source, in particular for a statement in biographical article of living person that can be read as derogatory.

I have to admit though that I did edit somewhat casually indeed. I just reacted to an edit on my appearing on my watchlist that looked at first glance unjustified to me. I wasn't aware of the hornet's nest any recent US politics associated articles have become (and the discretionary sanctions on it) otherwise I probably would have read the whole talk page carefully before editing rather than just fast browsing it.--Kmhkmh (talk) 18:23, 21 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. Hafize Erkan Gaye

Permit me to draw your attention to the age ofHafize Gaye Erkan whose age has a level of dispute. I initiated the creation of her page prior her appointment as Turkey central bank Governor, I didn’t see anywhere her birthday or year was mentioned but I saw reliable sources who quoted her age, see references 20, 21, & 22.(I hope new citations don’t shift it). This actually dates her birth year to 1979 which I used but was undone by a user whose comment you will find on my talk page.

I will also like to bring to your notice that all publications citing 1982 were done after publication of her Turkish Wikipedia page. Unfortunate this English page hasn’t been reviewed yet and I felt good seeing her new employer putting up 1979, I felt like for once that my maths degree isn’t useless. Kindly do your findings. Just a reminder to use edit summaries

Hello. I have noticed that you often edit without using an edit summary. Please do your best to always fill in the summary field. This helps your fellow editors use their time more productively, rather than spending it unnecessarily scrutinizing and verifying your work. Even a short summary is better than no summary, and summaries are particularly important for large, complex, or potentially controversial edits. I second this request. As an example, @Kmhkmh's single edit without any explanation what this improved the article has thrown away a number of my edits aimed at improving the article 'Geometric mean theorem' amply justified by edit summaries (among others, made it easier to link from other articles to just the relevant sub-concepts, which too was flagged in my edit summaries).

Please, I implore to perform edits granularly enough to be able to demonstrate that the change is an improvement, and if the edit isn't obvious (e.g. grammar fix) make effort to demonstrate it in the edit summary. This overarching claim just continues to avoid demonstrating how your reversal, of a number of my changes where explained my opinion of the added value, was itself an improvement. I can't conduct an objective discussion with this, and this is not due to lack of my efforts. I reiterate the need to make granular changes and demonstrating value in the edit summary.

A case in point, regarding some of my lost edits, please be mindful that separating independent parts of an article helps users to get to the relevant content quicker (via ToC but also via direct linking), and prevents time-waste on going through content irrelevant to their inquiry. Articles are not always red back-to-back, especially if the user is researching a grander subject. Arguably an article may be too decomposed, but this was not the case here - wanting to know a theorem's claim, and just that, is helpful if 'theorem's applications' are of no interest to the user, and probably a majority of theorems have application in separate sections. If want to know the theorem's claim you just need to read the lead (including the picture next to it) or the first few lines of the first section. So there is no back to back reading required for that at all. Yes, the TOC provides navigation allowing you to directly move to the parts you might be interested in, but not every mathematical statement or description consisting of a few lines should necessarily be placed its own section. Because this often makes an article less (human) readable as it can break the flow of reading/understanding and logical connections. There are often good reasons to group related subjects rather than putting them into separate sections and a section containing more than one paragraphs usually isn't a problem.

The problem with some copy editing is, that the editors often don't seem to read the sources or pay much attention why the original article was structured that way. Which sometimes displays a disrespect for the work of the original authors and can also cause a lot of unnecessary work as well.

While anybody can edit anything in Wikipedia and people can disagree about the best representation of the material, it is a good rule of thumb to avoid extensive revisions of the texts of others unless they are a relatively obvious "objective" improvement (rather than some improvement from personal perspective). Or to put it this way, authors who put a lot of work in article are usually not particularly happy if everything gets rearranged, moved around and heavily copy edited by others unless it results in an obvious improvement. Hence it is a good idea to take a somewhat conservative approach to copy editing and respect the original work were improvement isn't necessarily needed. The article's important claim of "The converse statement is true as well. Any triangle, in which the altitude equals the geometric mean of the two line segments created by it, is a right triangle." is now actually hard to discover due to the need to read about, i reiterate the specific problem, 'applications', relevance of which to many users is questionable.

I only found that another Wikipedia contributor also made edits due to the same needs, and you have reverted it, which they questioned here. This no longer seems like an obvious 'others should be conservative, your opinions should apply without need to justify'. If you don't see the value in the redaction already, I'd suggest to continue collect feedback there and go with the majority. Zlamma (talk) 00:30, 8 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
