WP:HAU, Status, and you!

As you may know, the StatusBot responsible for maintaining the status of the Highly Active Users was taken offline. We now have a replacement in the Qui status system. This semi-automatic system will allow you to easily update your status page found at Special:Mypage/Status which the HAU page code is now designed to read from. If you are already using Qui (or a compatible system) - great! - no action is needed (other than remembering to update your status as necessary). If not, consider installing Qui. You can also manually update this status by changing the page text to online, offline, or busy. Actually, I still use Twinkle to post warnings--unfortunately, the rollback feature doesn't allow for semi-automagic warnings like the Twinkle rollback feature does, so the best thing to do is simply copy the article name, open up the user's talk page (should be linked from the "Action complete" page), and post the warning that way. It sounds complicated, but once you get used to the flow it's actually quite easy and a good bit more reliable than the Twinkle rollback. --jonny-mt 02:45, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

that image is historical and am sure if those people were your great grand parents who suffered and died or your children you'd be out on the streets screaming in outrage. Ah, this is why I took the "en me" link out of my Commons signature. If you take the time to actually look at my comment, you'll see that my argument for deletion is based on the licensing requirements of Commons, which is a free media depository. Since there is substantial doubt about whether or not this work is free, I suggested that it could not be hosted on Commons, although I suggested that it could be used under fair use on the various wikis.
Incidentally, members of my family did indeed suffer under the Nazi regime, but surprisingly enough this has nothing to do with whether the image is freely licensed. --jonny-mt 03:48, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

It's no big deal. One editor is asking if it is "substantially" better than the current version or if it contains some bit of information that could be merged into the current article then making the current article worthy of a merge to some hypothetical main article. Lucky Cement, Original Research.

I did, in fact, read the "no original research" rule, and if you had indeed read my article you would have seen that I ONLY wrote facts. I stated the website where I got my facts from. This is just so unbelievably ridiculous! I spent an hour of my very busy day trying to lay out an article that others could benefit from, and you "speedily deleted" it.

I understand the problem you regularly face with "original research", and how people use wikipedia as a forum to publish their own ideas, thoughts and opinions. I applaude the fact that people like you remove this rubbish from wikipedia and make sure it remains 'clean'. However, I think you can certainly see that my article was an exception.

The information was either taken from the Lucky Cement website, the Dawn (a local newspaper) or from their Annual Report (2007). I am not an employee of lucky cement and hold no stake in the company. This article was primarily meant to be educational. It was originally flagged for being "blatant" promotion of the company. This is NOT true.

I am not an advanced web user, I did not exactly know how to glamourise my article in the way that all wikipedia articles are, but I was certainly trying to figure things out. You didn't even give me a chance.

Jcoder Java Editor is a non-advertising article

i found this product from google and just wanted to add this new software to wikipedia. Jcoder is a freeware, it's no point to advertise it on wikipedia. This product is getting famous now. Papakolea Beach

Since this is basically your baby, I was wondering if you could take a look at Papakolea Beach again. I'm sure we could at least bump it up to C or B-Class, but more importantly, I think we can get it up to GA. Let me know what you think. There's still a lot of information about the physical location that doesn't appear in the current article but can be found in the references. Well, I assume that there is more biographical information about him in Japanese language sources than there is the English press. That's a starter. I'm also looking to update the article and expand it. I'm sure Japan made some kind of formal protest, and that there has been some kind of recognition or apology from Burma; anything along those lines. I'm just trying to bring the article up to speed. I'll be happy to do some full translations later on if you'd like, but for the time being I tracked down a couple of articles as starting points. This is an editorial written by Yoshihide Matsumura, who is apparently the president of a company specializing in counterfeit bills and someone who knew him personally--apparently he saw him in Thailand and didn't know he was going to Burma (Myanmar in Japanese). There's also this article, which discusses a grassroots-level assembly seeking the return of videotape shot by Nagai (echoing a request from his father in December and continuing petitions started in October). The Yomiuri Shinbun also asked journalists to name the ten biggest stories of 2007, and they chose the Burma demonstrations and Nagai's death as the biggest.
I'll keep looking, but I wasn't able to find anything in Japanese on the apology--this is probably due to the fact that most newspaper websites restrict access to their archives (or simply don't provide them) as well as the technical issues related to searching in Japanese. It seems that there was one, though, judging by this English-language article, although I'll take some more time and check out how well it was received. --jonny-mt 03:12, 19 July 2008 (UTC)

Looking for help

I think this is not your area, but you might know somebody that can help me. I am proposing Euro gold and silver commemorative coins (Austria) for FL. We have been challenged by the amount of non-free images (although all of them are OK under the fair-use rationale for currency images). I was under the impression that pictures of coins can be used under the fair-use rationale, but the large number of non-free images is what is challenged in the article. Wow, two image-related questions in as many days. It's like you heard about my Commons RfA and decided to come test me >.<
Actually, I checked it out, and it seems that you may be out of luck here. As you are apparently aware, these coins are subject to copyright since they issued not by the European Central Bank (which would make them free enough for our purposes) but instead by the private Austrian mint, which appears to retain copyright (although this deletion discussion on Commons is somewhat informative). Since WP:NFC states that "images that are used only to visually identify elements in the article should be used as sparingly as possible" for lists, it seems that there's little you can do to address these objections short of demonstrating that these images are in fact free or simply cutting down on the number of them in the list.
I'll open a discussion on the Commons licensing talk page to get some opinions from people who know more about this than I do. --jonny-mt 14:32, 28 July 2008 (UTC)

Father Damien sock farm

Sigh. I've been ignoring this for a while, in the hope that they would get bored and go away, but the socks seem to be multiplying exponentially and are hovering under 20 accounts at the moment. I'm not sure whether I should file a RFCU or what, but it seems like its one account talking to itself on Talk:Father Damien, and perhaps even arguing with its other accounts. Aside from very minor trolling of the talk page, they haven't caused much trouble nor do they appear malicious, but if a serious dispute did arise, I could see how the "soldiers" would be called into duty. That...is quite possibly the strangest thing I have ever seen on Wikipedia. Seriously, this beats SecretChief and his sock puppets, because at least there the hallucinogenics were to blame. From a policy standpoint, there's not all that much that can be done--undeclared multiple accounts are allowed as long as they don't start stacking deletion discussions, evading blocks/bans, or trying to form the illusion of consensus, so I believe arguing with yourself is fine. I'm not sure that checkuser or blocks would be appropriate here, either, since as you mentioned they're not doing anything malicious (which means that any potential block would be preventative and thus not allowed). I gotta be honest and tell you that I'm stumped; I'm going to ask for some extra opinions on WP:AN. --jonny-mt 14:24, 29 July 2008 (UTC)

No hard feelings Johnny. I did, admittedly, feel my last addition lacked a little something to make it look like a more stable, solid article.

On your recommendation I looked through the tutorials and studied them a little harder. I really would like to expand on this article, but there are so many things to keep in mind now! Writing a wiki article is definately quite a labourious process!

And unfortunately obtaining urdu sources isn't that easy, for two reasons:

  1. Urdu sources online tend to be written in roman-urdu (and hence aren't always accurate); and
  2. My urdu isn't very good!

I'm going to spend some time gathering a few more sources, a local newspaper has an online archive that goes as far back as the first of January 2004 (it's a start).

Anyway, thank you for ermm... *forcing* me to put in a bit more effort into writing this article.

In my opinion, the article isn't blatant enough to warrant deletion under WP:CSD#G11. By "blatant" I typically mean "full of marketing terms", such as this excerpt from an article I deleted a few minutes ago:

Gillin's Beach

Hey, Jonny, can you answer a question for me? Gillin's Beach is part of Mahaʻulepu Beach (along with two other beaches). When I try moving Gillin's Beach to Mahaulepu Beach, I get the following message:

"Gillin's Beach" cannot be moved to "Mahaulepu Beach", because the title "Mahaulepu Beach" is protected from being created. If you feel that this move is valid, please consider requesting the move first.

Weird; I didn't see anything, either, and when I moved it with my non-sysop alt account (i.e. this one) it went just fine. What I don't understand is why can't I have the quote in, it is not copyrighted as far as I know. And you need to have a talk with Corvus cornix he gave me warnings and told me that my editing privelages would be taken away. If he is not an adminstator then he needs to keep to himself. A small quote--one or two sentences at most--that contributes to the article should be acceptable, but adding large chunks of copyrighted text (or entire articles) constitutes a copyright violation. As far as determining copyright goes, a good rule of thumb is that unless it is explicitely in the public domain or otherwise available under a free license, it should be considered as being under copyright. In this case, People Magazine and/or the author of the article most certainly own the copyright to the article.
Incidentally, Corvus is correct in his warnings--persistent copyright violations will result in a block. Needless to say, this is a last resort, and we would much rather have you as a productive contributor. Re: your message

Thanks for your concern. Firstly, how could I reconsider a block that already expired? While the edits of the IP may not exactly fit what is commonly construed as vandalism, they do fit disruptive editing because when they replaced an entire article with their version and I reverted and left a talk page message to them (through the bold-revert-discuss method), they constantly reverted without going over the merits in a way that any other contributors could evaluate them (the article talk page for instance instead of an edit summary that limits the amount of text you can type). It is my belief that the IP was a former user since they knew all the lingo at the outset. I am not sure if they were blocked previously or not, but that did raise a red-flag. I also note that the IP never provided any verifiable and reliable sources that were not original research to back up their claims. As for content disagreement, I don't even have that page watchlisted, nor do I intend to (I came upon this by looking at recent changes) and since the blocks have expired, they are able to come back and re-write the article entirely and I wouldn't even know about it. If there was any abuse of the tools it was not intentional with malice aforethought and an extremely isolated incident (I've been a sysop since January and this is the first occasion like this that I remember).

As to the other diffs you've provided, I leave a talk page message or template warning for each and every revert I perform, so they were not blind reverts. I do not dispute that I could have used the ability within twinkle to leave a more personalized message in the edit summary (I do use this on most occasions and do not go to admin rollback until after at least the first warning usually). Perhaps I could use a trout? I'm guessing that for those occasions there was something external affecting me at that time (I have been going through some RL issues as of late).

As to my possibly having some sort of a fortress mentality, while that is entirely possible, many of the articles that I have contributed to have been helped immensely by good-faith anon contributors, in fact one of them was recently saved from being demoted at FAR recently.

Thanks very much for the response, particularly for clearing up the rollback question. I'm not denying that the IP was engaging in an edit war; I was simply trying to suggest that a gentler hand (and maybe a 3RR warning) may have resulted in a different outcome. But as you mention it's all water under the bridge, and the wiki will certainly go on.
By the way, I certainly didn't mean to scold you or act like I was putting you in your place. As I mentioned, the vast majority of your contributions (content and administrative) are hugely helpful and flawlessly executed, but sadly as admins it's the 0.001% of questionable edits that we're always judged on. I've noticed that a fortress mentality has started to push me into WP:BITE territory on more than one occasion, so I was just hoping to alert you to the same. Sorry; I've had a little bit of a slow start getting back into Wikipedia (suffice to say that "hit the ground running" doesn't quite cover what I came back to at my job). Request for Advice and/or Assistance

You probably have no recollection of our brief exchange from last May, when I was blocked by you, but I appreciated your advice and tone at the time. I apologize if this request somehow violates Wiki protocols, but I'm asking for your help. I added a paragraph on the "Criticism of Bill O'Reilly" page regarding his remarks on teen pregnancy in re:Bristol Palin. User:Arzel raised RS questions which I believe were resolved (in favor of keeping the sources); no one supported Arzel's position and he dropped it. Then, about a week later another user, who goes by both Tom and another name, began deleting the edits and sources using the same objection, w/o having participated on talk. I don't know if this will continue(he's reverted a number of times) but I would like to avoid a recurrence of past problems...Jimintheatl (talk) 17:25, 14 September 2008 (UTC)

Hello again. It seems you are on vacation, and I add my wishes that you are having fun. We certainly did in Venice not long ago.... no editing then....

I am sure that upon your return you will have more pressing issues...but I am truly confused...Other editors have raised raised dubious claims(blogs can NEVER be RS) which have been, I think refuted. Those have been re-raised. Another editor apparently confused links with cites/references; rather than revert(which, yes, I have done) I pointed out the error and asked him/her to correct. I am at a loss--when editors revert on false/dubious/baseless grounds, what should one do when reason/logic (at least from my perspective --- and to a certain extent, objectively, i.e., the argument that a blog cannot be an RS or the deletion of a ref citing WP:EL...) don't persuade? Sorry for the delay in responding. I took a brief look through the talk page and the history of the article, and from what I'm seeing, you're doing just fine by refraining from engaging in edit wars and discussing issues on the talk page.
If it gets to a point where no resolution can be reached on the talk page, you have several options. You can request comments from other users, take it to mediation, or post the issue on either the NPOV/RS noticeboard. If it turns into an edit war, you can submit a request for page protection that will (hopefully) allow you enough time to settle things on the talk page.
