Cingular Wireless

Wikipedia is meant to be a factual encyclopedia. Please do not edit pages with personal bias. In specific, you slammed a 3rd party (Telephia) and used a controversial newspaper article (Boston Globe) as your only source with no other fact.

While Cingular has launched a controversial advertisement, the company it cites (Telephia) freely sells their drive testing results to absolutely anyone. I'm sorry, but I just find it amusing that you register the name "User:Cingular hitman", remove cited information from the Cingular Wireless article and mark the edit minor, and accuse me of slander in the edit summary. I added a fact with a reference, incidentally the first reference in the article. If you think that is "slamm[ing] a 3rd party," I'm afraid there's not much I can do for you.

Brackets templates.

Hey! Great job on the bracket templates! I was just trying to see if I could help, so I was looking at the 2004 tennis games and saw that there were two places that had rounds of 64-- making it a 6 round bracket. Thanks! 6 round bracket, eh... I've found the 5 round one typically pushes the limits of screen width, and had pretty much been planning to use two 5-rounds and a separate "final" matchup to do rounds of 64. Removal of the olympic rings from pages.

Hey, Jonel. I see you have been removing this image from many pages. I think that you've gone too far on the following pages, though: Template:Olympic games medal count and Portal:Olympics. The former is placed and only viewed on main pages, which is a perfectly fine place to put fair use images. Why, then, is it wrong to have this image on the template that is on an encyclopedic page? The latter is also encyclopedic, and contains information that is supplemented by the image. Could you lead me to the place where it says fair use images can only be put on main space pages? Thanks. Wikipedia:Fair_use#Policy, #9. Fair use images should be used only in the article namespace. Used outside article space, they are often enough not covered under the fair use doctrine. Unified Team Flag

Hey, I noticed that we've both been removing Olympic Rings images all over, and so I was wondering what you thought about using Image:Flag of the Olympic Movement.svg as the 20px flag in pages like this. I feel that since the IOC let this entity use the Olympic Rings, then it should be free in this sense, i.e. only when the Rings are representing the flag that represented the Unified Team. I know very little about copyright except what I see on Wikipedia pages (which, as we know, shouldn't be considered reliable sources). I've been acting to implement WP policy without really paying any attention to what's legally allowable (which, as far as I can tell, is quite a bit more than our policy provides for due to the free-content principle). In this case, my guess would be that the use we make of the Rings for EUN representation is under the terms of a (fairly minimally) restrictive license (the same license by which the EUN team itself used the image on its flag) rather than by the image being free. Then again, I'm not one of the nine people who understand the copyright law of my own country, much less the rest of the world, so... -- Jonel | Speak 23:44, 27 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Reconsider flagIOC template?

Hi Jonel. Thought you might be interested to know that I have re-worked the flagIOC template so that you can use an alternate flag image. For example {{FlagIOC|AUS|1900 Summer|flag=Flag of the United Kingdom.svg}} yields  Australia. Olympic sports

Hi Jonel, I see you have entered the fray in Olympic sports. As you've probably noticed, this article is under heavy edit action from User:Roitr/sockpuppeter. Demonstration sport and 2010 Winter Olympics are also experiencing some "collateral damage". I have been trying to address his edits as diplomatically as I can, and in fact, I think the article has been improved a lot in the past week or so as a result, but he/she still insists on some awful edits, and of course, introduction of unsourced material, or worse, material that contradicts official sources. More Olympic flags

I'm not really sure. Commons has two (slightly different) images purporting to be of pre-Federation Jamaican flags ([1] and [2]). My guess would be the second of those, as the coat of arms is more similar to Image:Jamaica coa. The 1952 and 1956 Official Reports include pictures of teams behind their flags in the opening ceremony; neither picture of Jamaica's flag is that helpful, but the 1956 one appears to support a Blue Ensign defaced with a coat of arms. -- Jonel | Speak 16:52, 26 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry for taking so long to reply. I was at work. The first image —Image:Flag of Jamaica 1906-1957.gif — is the flag that Jamaica used between 1906 and 1957. However, after 1957, Jamaica changed the pattern and added a yellow emblem to the coat of arms— Image:Colonial_Jamaican_flag.gif. Athlete categorisation

Hi, good work on filling in the gaps in athlete biographical articles, just one small thing: when categorising biographical articles, please use Category:Year of birth missing for those articles where the birth year could potentially be known. Category:Year of birth unknown is for those articles where the birth year is obscured by bad records or the sands of time, or is disputed by historians and will never be known. Aquatics v. Swimming/Schronized Swimming/Waterpolo/Diving

Hey Jonel,

I was recently doing some edits to the 2008 summer page and I was going through the sports when I realized that the only sport that isn't listed is Aquatics, rather, its disciplines are listed. I've noticed this all along but havn't really made anything of it until now. It seems that the 4 disciplines are not grouped together into one page, like Volleyball at the 2004 Summer Olympics (Beach and indoor). Instead, they have their own pages. Why is this? Is this just something that we have just gone along with and never changed? If it has to do with the size of the page, obviously Athletics would be just as big if not bigger. And that's what subpages are for anyway.

So what do you think? I know you've been on the project longer than I have so I figured I'd ask you, the veteran of the Olympic WP pages! I think that they should be merged into one page, [[Aquatics at the ____ Olympics]], so that every sport is consistant. From there, we can have more subpages, but I think that a consistancy would be nice. With a mix, it just doesn't seem right. Anyway, respond when you can. Hey Jared. The mixed treatment of sports and disciplines is essentially a historical relic; it's simply the way things have been done and no one has made the effort to change it. Consistency would be good, but with the wonderful things called "redirects" the page location is not a big priority for me. If you want to undertake changing things, please go ahead. My preference would be to have pages for each discipline (that is, breaking out the two disciplines of "Volleyball" and "Beach volleyball" from the single page) rather than agglomerating. An "Aquatics at the xxxx Summer Olympics" page would be more of a disambiguation page than anything else, pointing to the various pages on disciplines. The same would be true for Canoe/Kayak, Gymnastics, Volleyball, etc. But again, my priorities are 1) people can find what they're looking for; 2) consistency; 3) disciplines rather than sports. #1 is satisfied with the current arrangement, beyond that I care less. -- Jonel | Speak 15:52, 10 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I definitely think that there should be pages for each discipline, but I think the main pages should be the actual sport that is falls under. So for now, I'll set up the 2008 page so that Aquatics is just a brief "This is what's happening under the sport of aquatics" and just go right into subpages for each. Q: Why has UK used the name "Great Britain"?

Hi there! The closest thing I've been able to find for a reason for the use of "Great Britain" rather than "United Kingdom" is a footnote in the 1908 Official Report referencing an agreement between the constituent countries' athletic associations. The footnote simply states that the agreement resulted in the official name of the team would be the "Great Britain and Ireland" team without saying why "United Kingdom" wasn't acceptable. The report then goes on to use "United Kingdom" almost exclusively to refer to the team!

Reverts on the descriptions of the olympic banners

Hi. I was looking through some recent edits on the olympic pages and I noticed that you reverted all the descriptions of the olympic banners of many of the winter olympic pages. Just curious as to why. No, I'm not the original person who put up the edits, nor am I talking on his behalf. I kinda like what the person did... giving a description of what the banners represents. I noticed that those descritions made the box much wider than necessary, but a few breaks in the description could solve that. Just would like your reasoning. Thanks. Ok, I've gotten a response from Sue Anne saying that those deleted descritions were copyright violations. I don't see how they are copyrighted to begin with. They are just descriptions and after looking at the official IOC page, there is nothing stating that theose descriptions ARE copyrighted. Now, I would certainly agree that it is plagiarism for basically copy/pasting the words in, but wouldn't that be solved if the credit was given to the IOC? Again, just curious. Sue Anne is correct. Even if a website doesn't explicitly note that the material on it is copyrighted, the material on it is generally still protected by copyright law. It would be wonderful if someone would write good descriptions for the emblems without violating the IOC's copyright, but copying and pasting text from the IOC website is not acceptable for Wikipedia. Colonial governors

You originally created the List of colonial governors in YYYY series back in 2004. In the last two years they haven't expanded beyond Portugal and therefore aren't really doing any good. I noticed because one of the articles has been listed on cleanup since August of last year. Hi there. If I remember correctly (and this was a while ago, so, I'm not quite sure), the colonial governors series was created due to fighting over the title of the state leaders series, mostly to have a place to put things that had been part of that series under the previous title but no longer fit. Regardless, the colonial governors ones haven't gotten much attention; state leaders and religious leaders always drew more interest (certainly from editors, I can only assume from readers as well). What time I myself spend on Wikipedia nowadays is mostly spent on Olympics coverage. I don't plan on expanding the colonial governors anytime soon, and since it appears that the majority of them haven't been touched since I created them, I would guess no one else is likely to expand them either. You might try dropping a line at the relevant WikiProject (Wikipedia:WikiProject Leaders by year), but since the project is inactive, I'd say go ahead with the prodding. -- Jonel | Speak 02:33, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
