Favor/suggestionHey John Pack Lambert, When you start adding people to new categories, like you did here [1], instead of removing Jane Whiteside from Category:Deaths by drowning in New Zealand and placing her into Category:Deaths by drowning and Category:Deaths in the Colony of New Zealand. Could you just add her to the new category, instead of removing her from the old one? That would help a lot, in case, the new category ends up not being as helpful as you had hoped. Mason (talk) 19:06, 25 November 2023 (UTC) Is place of burial defining?is place of burial really defining to people? If so, does this apply broadly to include city, country, etc. Or is it just defining in the intersection of certain cemeteries with those who are buried there? I am thinking that some cemeteries might be defining, but anything larger than that is not defining. I can not really see how if we do not categorize by place of death we can categorize by place of burial an item even less connected to anything about a person's life than the place of death is.John Pack Lambert (talk) 04:15, 30 November 2023 (UTC) Pest, Kingdom of HungaryPest, Kingdom of Hungary was a distinct city until 1873. I had existed since before Roman times. It was distinct from Buda until they merged in 1873. Carl Geibel (1842–1910) is an example of a person who lived there only prior to 1873. He was there a few years and then moved to the Kingdom of Saxony. He did not live in Budapest, and so I do not think we should put him in an nochronistic category for such.John Pack Lambert (talk) 16:42, 30 November 2023 (UTC) Category:Immigrants to British Hong Kong has been nominated for mergingCategory:Immigrants to British Hong Kong has been nominated for merging. Some of the people in the Category are born as late as 1880, making them born in a unified Italy. Mason (talk) 21:19, 16 December 2023 (UTC) Deaths by place v deaths by nationalityCurrently deaths is one of the few things where we actually categorize by country, not by nationality. Except even some deaths categories we do by nationslity. For deaths by war, we group military personnel of Country Foo together by having died in X war, regardless of where they died. I am wondering if it really makes sense to group how we do. It might also depend on the case. We have a cancer death tree. If anAmerican gets cancer, has luved in the US all his life, gets treated for 5 years in the US, but in the last week decides to go to Mexico gor an experental treatment, and dies in Mexico, he goes in the cancer dwaths in Mexico. If a New York City politician is vacationing in Rome and that is where a political enemy catches up to him and shoots him, he goes in assainations in Italy. It actually there gets even murkier. If our New York City politician is shot somewhere west of Genoa, and rushed to a hodpitsl in Nice, and stays alive there 2 days and then dies, was that an assasination in Italy, because he was shot there, or in France because he dued there. What if a prominent Fench singer is flying first class on a French airline plane to Warsaw, and the plane crashes and all die because of an error by the French pulot, but they crash into Czech land? Do we really want to call that a death in the Czech Republic when the person gad literally never bern to that country, especially if there is nothing Czech related about thd plane. On the other hand if our Frech singer friend had decided to take a touring bus, aldo with a Frwnch company, and they crash in Brlgium, but she is taken across the border to Germany, is that a road incidents dwath in Germany, or should we formulatd the category by lication of dwath causing incident and not by lication of actual death. Likewise if a Mexican politician commits suicide while on a brief vacation in the Bahamas, does it make sense to categorize as a suicide in the Bahamas, and not look at the nationality. I think if we were to go to nationslity of dwaths categories we woyld limit it to nationality at time of death, and start with the assumption that the person was at soms level a,national of where thry lived at death, even if rhey still had formalnationslity elsewhere. A miner from Italy killed in a mine explosion in Colorado jyst 2 wweks after rhey came to the US as an immigrant is still an American mi e explosion death, but if the guy was a mining engineer on a short assignment to the US with clear plans to go back to Italy he is an Italian mining incident death. There is an ease of defining place of death as just plzce of death, but I wo der if it can too often place people in location categories with no meaning for their lives. I think if we do want to keep placd of dwath as literally place of death we need to insist that Suicides in the Soviet Union, Road °Accident dwaths in the Soviet Union, etc can not coexist with the categories by post-Soviet country. We can have Road Accidents desths in the Ukrainian SSR, Roade accident deatgs in the Russian SSR, suicides in the Kazakh SSR, etc. However we want to name them, that we could place in the trees for ths later countries, but deaths in the Soviet Union should only be in that category, a Soviet place specific sub-cat (starvation deaths in Leningrad may or maynot be a justifiable category, but thst is the type of think we would need), or in a non-place soecifying cause category for cause if death categories we lack enough of from the Soviet Union. I think we should also limit articles to 1 cause of death category. We should not have say Tuberculosis deaths in Soviet Union and infectious disease deaths in the Ukraine SSR category. Personally I think if wekeep infectious disease deaths it would only be as a container category. Most people historically died from infectious diseases, but I do not think in most cases that fact is notable.plus in many cases we cannot adequatrly place the disease into a modern diseease name. I think in addition we need to in all cases either decided, with the posdible exception of suicides amd maybe a few other cases that are politically connected either A-plave X is distinct enough from later place Y that has similar but different borders, name etc, so if we decide The Ottoman Empire is not Turkey, which we have, then no one who died in tge Ottoman Empire ever goes in any death in Turkey category, period. If we go the other way, and decide the the Qing Empire and China refer to functionally the same place, then for deaths caregories we never seperate out the Qing Empire at all, with the line exception of mayne suicides and executions and maybd if some other category can be shown to be highly politucally linked. The biggest mess in my mind is states that existed under multiple other states. For exaple the Kingdom of Prussia startes out as a state both inside and outside the Holy Roman Empire when formed in 1701 (and Brandenburg-Prussia is the historiographicak name for the unified state for a few decades before, well pitically unified, geograohically disjointed). After 1806 it exists as an i dependent state, although in1815 much of it is placed in the even looser German Confederstion, which ceases to exist in 1866, but is replaced by the Prussian controlled German Empire in 1871. It become the Free State of Prussia in 1918 which de fscto ceases yo e ist in the 1930s butde jure lasts until 1946. For nationality purposes I avoid placing people born much after 1840 in ghe category, but it might be argusble Kingdom ofPrussia categories should havd people who were notable or at least involved in their orofession by 1918, but dince movement within the Empire is so easy after 1871, and Prussia dominates it, things are tricky. I think for deaths in Prussia we could absolutely cut off all by cause categories in 1871, but argue that while deaths in the Holy Roman Empire are defining enough to group anyone dieing there until just after 1800, the Prussian case is special and snyone who died in the Kingdom of Prussia, pre-1871, as defined when they died, should only be in either A-a death in the Kingdom if Prussia + cause category B-an unplace splecific cause of death category or C-if we find some notabkr cause of death occured so often in the Kingdom of Prussia that we want to divide it by Province we can, as we have divided some occupations in the Kingdom of Prussia by province. I think that is a bad plan though, and unlikely to ever be reasonable.John Pack Lambert (talk) 23:52, 16 December 2023 (UTC)

I am thinking if we are not sure what caused a death, explain that in the article, but there is no reason to have multiple categories. Just have a year of death category and be done.~~~ John Pack Lambert (talk) 01:02, 17 December 2023 (UTC) Are deaths from cancer definingI serm to recall that at present cancer is the number 1 cause of death. Although heart disease is close behind, and might actually be the leading cause. This makes me wonder if doing of cancer is domething it makes sense to create categories for, atheist direct ones. I am thinking the type of cancer that kills someone might be worth having categories for, but not direct ones for cancer. I believe right now many people are in both Deaths from cancer in X, be X a country or a substations unit, and in deaths from Y cancer,be it lung, breast, bone, etc. I think we should only have people in at most one cause of death category. So we should limit people yo bring in deaths from Y cancer, be it bone, skin, lung, breast, brain etc. Then if we can justify splitting deaths from lung cancer, deaths from bone cancer, etc by place we can do that, be it by country or if we have enough by a sub-nationsl unit. I do not think we even need Deaths in the United Statez from Cancer, deaths in Japan from cancer, etc, but maybe they could ve Co tsiner categories, and maybe we have enough non-biograohical articles to go there, but I do not think we should directly have article in them, and I do not think we should feel any need for every overdone who died of a cancer to be in a Category for that, or to have subcats covering every possible place. We only need to place people in a sub-cat at all when we know enough (that is, know it from reliable sources), to say what type of cancer killed them, and we should only split the categories by type of cancer below just type by countries or sub-national units where we have a reasonable size. I think 5 should be the absolute minimum for splitting, but only if we can create probably at least 5 sub-cats at that size, and if we have 25 articles on people who we had sourcing g to say thry died from brain cancer (I am pretty sure we have more), and they happened to only be from 5 countries,by some extreme coincidence 5 dieing in each country, I would say we have not yet met the point of needing a split.John Pack Lambert (talk) 00:15, 17 December 2023 (UTC)

Mason (talk) 20:34, 17 December 2023 (UTC) Native American women in Colonial AmericaI am pretty sure Native American women in Colonial America should only be in its first 4 categories. I do not think that it makes sense to impose the article into by century categories when it is a broad topic Category. Beyond this, I am thinking the American women by century categories most logically begin with the formation of the United States in 1776. I think the 13 colonies need to be treated as distinct. However we do it, I do not think there is good reason to have either 15th or 16th century American people categories or sub-categories. At earliest we begin the categories with the colonization if Jamestown in 1607, but I think that is too broad a scope.John Pack Lambert (talk) 03:37, 18 December 2023 (UTC) Ethnicity as a de facto nationslityFor some people who either A-live in a stateless society, or b-live in States for which we cannot gather enough articles to create a reasonable sized Category, we categorize them by ethnicity not nationality. The Comanche come to mind but there are many cases. The issue is some Comanche effectively lived outside the control and society of any country, we have later who lived much of their life as subjects of the US or Mexico or maybe elsewhere. I am thinking ERGS rules look different. A person like Pocahontas, and even Sacagawea was enough a part of various colonial or post-colonial countries that thry can be said to have been nationals of them. This may not quite be the case for Uncas, and is clearly the case for some people. We need to avoid using ERGS rules to force placing people in categories that make no sense. Eli Parker is without question America, are many other historical Native Americans, but there are some who are not. Also, since we categorize by ethnicity not race, We have to ask would this person self-describe as Native American or a like scope term as an ethnicity. For people like Uncas, Powhatan and Massasoit the answer is clearly no, e would see themselves as various ethnic identies like Mohican and Wampanoag, not in terms of broad ethno/racial categories like "Native American". We need to be conscious of these facts when creating categories.John Pack Lambert (talk) 04:02, 18 December 2023 (UTC) Animals and humans in same deaths categoriesIt appears articles on animsls are mixed in with cause of death categories that also include humans.John Pack Lambert (talk) 04:30, 18 December 2023 (UTC) Category:Emigrants from the Grand Duchy of Tuscany to England has been nominated for splittingCategory:Emigrants from the Grand Duchy of Tuscany to England has been nominated for splitting. I am thinking the best Category to put him in would be American anarchist writers. I am not sure where that would fall though. I am also not sure what we would have left in American anarchists after that. However since he is in a non-diffusing ethnicity cat, at least if the description of him as a writer makes sense we need to place him in a writer cat as well. Since some anarchists were just speakers, activists or other things and not writers I think this would work. I am not sure if this would go under an existing sub-cat of American writers, or need to go directly under American writers.John Pack Lambert (talk) 15:35, 21 December 2023 (UTC) Questionwhy if we have decided China=People's Republic of China at present, do we have a "deaths in the peoples Republic of China" Category tree at all?John Pack Lambert (talk) 00:18, 17 December 2023 (UTC) Category:Journalists killed in the Ottoman Empire has been nominated for deletionCategory:Journalists killed in the Ottoman Empire has been nominated for deletion. Queen of Hearts ❤️ (she/they 🎄 🏳️⚧️) 00:48, 27 December 2023 (UTC) Major General David Stewart of GarthStewart is a significant figure in the debate about the highland clearances, often quoted by those who do not feel that the clearances were inevitable, necessary and beneficial and by those who argue that the native, Gaelic speaking, population were not inferior beings who needed to be removed to achieve economic progress. I would suggest that the paragraph I inserted, quoting Ian Grimble's book, should not have been deleted as it shows Stewart' place in this discussion. It can be argued that this is what most makes him important in Scottish current historiography.
