Jim McColl

I noticed your update on the birth date.

I am aware of those pages that say he was 89 at death as I have linked them. I have not found any sources explicitly report a 1935 birth date.

I have cited sources prior to his death that mention his birth year was in 1936 not 1935. Some of the Scottish papers say he was 88 and others 89. I do not feel comfortable reporting a birthdate other than 1936. Nayyn (talk) 14:00, 25 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure there's much point in this discussion. The BBC aired a documentary in September 2015 celebrating his 80th birthday, which he took part in. Vast majority of sources, including the most reliable ones (BBC, Herald etc.) all say he was 89. The broadsheets will release full obituaries over the coming days, which will further confirm a 1935 birth year, and give us a full date of birth. I've removed this once again and restored 1935, this time with two sources – the BBC and Scotland's People, which holds a complete record of all of the births in Scotland. I've uploaded a screenshot for you here. As you can see, there was no James H. McColl born in 1936. There was, however, a James Hamilton McColl born in Kilmarnock in 1935 – our man. I've removed the previous source from the article altogether – not all trusted news sources produce decent work all of the time, and in this case their article contradicts itself (saying he was 89, whilst also saying he was born in 1936).
