Yeah, last year I fussed quite a bit with Commons categories but this year I've decided others are carrying the load there and every minute I put into disagreeing with them on such questions would better be spent on my pictures. Brooklyn Bridge photographing

Wow, with that target it's hard to find a bad vantage. In Commons:Category:Brooklyn Bridge you can click on the map tab to see some of the most used ones. My personal favorite in Manhattan is from the northern parts of the Manhattan Bridge walkway, especially in the morning since I'm no great fan of silhouette work. Pier 17 in South Street Seaport gives good pictures most the day and affords opportunities to work boats into the composition; early evening makes for tricky shadows that can work for good and ill.

In Brooklyn I like the new Brooklyn Bridge Park, mainly the western part of the recently opened Pier 1. Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park also has good vantages, especially the hill just west of the foot of Manhattan Bridge, again a sunny morning better serves my taste. Midday offers a nice shot from the corner of Jay and Plymouth Streets. I don't do telephoto work, but if you've got the hardware, the potential of Governors Island has not been well exploited and I haven't seen any long shots from near the foot of Division Avenue in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

I'm in town for the Wiki GLAM Camp NYC. I got a few snaps yesterday of Park Avenue HD, Elsdorf Church, Morris Bank (probably - is it being torn down or ...?). In short enough to finish the northern 2 divisions, except for St Walburga, which I should be able to get before leaving. Jim, is there any particular reason that you keep re-inserting a photograph of an old un-relevant armory in Whitestone as representing the New York Naval Miliitia? It has been decades since that facility has been used by NYNM. I won't worry about whether my picture is to be lost; close to 2000 of mine are in Wikipedia anyway and this one would not be sorely missed. It would be a bigger concern if the article were to describe an important subject. In that case I would repair the damage promptly. Perhaps this is a proud member of a relatively unimportant institution, who got a Wikipedia account intending to uphold the institution's honor. This is not exactly the kind of motive we look for in a newcomer, but one that, properly attended, might eventually work to advance the goals of the project.

The latest edit was perhaps a failed effort to insert a different picture. For a few days I'll leave the article in its present trashed condition, hoping Wikipedia's help for new editors takes effect or the newbie enters into thoughtful dialog with me or other experienced practitioners. If not, I'll restore and expect eventually to see it trashed again, perhaps not quite so clumsily. QR codes

Thanks for the the note on QR codes. I'm just going to take this a small step at a time and see how far it goes. I am concerned about potential trashing up historical sites, how to avoid getting a bad name, etc. Right now I classify 3 types of areas, National Parks and similar areas - obviously needs some type of permission; city streets where bills and posters are common - if posted in a respectful way probably ok; and more rural areas - which would need the property owner's permission if it is going to be posted at all - otherwise they'll just tear them down. I've now posted 4 QR codes (hope I'm not getting carried away). The first was at the NYC Youth Hostel (Association Residence Nursing Home) with the desk clerks permission - my guess is that they've taken it down by now. This weekend I put up 3 in Cape May County, just to check out a few basics: how easy are they to put up? How long will they last? Will people object? The codes I posted were 1.5 inches square with text of "from Wikipedia" and the short title of the article Fishing Creek Schoolhouse, Caribbean Motel, Wildwoods Shore Resort Historic District (on 2 lines). I then covered it with 2 inch wide transparent tape. So a total of about 2 by 3 inches. Results: so far haven't noticed any increased article traffic; it's not so easy putting them up on wooden telephone poles, and it's not so easy finding better surfaces in accessible places (one's too far from the site, the other is too close). So I'll see how long they stay up, if it's only a month for most cases it wouldn't be worth the bother. BTW, I think using the Wikipedia globe would require permission as well, so I didn't use it. Also, while driving home NPR had a story on funeral directors proposing the use of QR codes to link to the person's bio. No, I don't suggest linking every BDP article via a QR code on his tombstone! Unfortunately, "Freedom of Panorama" in the U.S. covers only buildings, not statues and sculptures -- unlike most of the rest of the world where it covers everything. It's patently ridiculous that it doesn't, but it would take a change in the law to make it right, and I don't exactly know who could help bring pressure in the right place to facilitate it. The idea that a scultpure, for instance, which is displayed in a public place cannot be photographed is ludicrous, and cannot (obviously) be enforced in the real world, except in those cases where it is used for commercial purposes. The whole idea is even more bizarre when it involves art purchased with public money, displayed on public land, for the benefit of the public, if the artist has retained the copyright. Just crazy.

In the meantime, visual works made before 1923 are in the public domain, works from 1923 to 1978 must have a copyright notice (a simple c-in-a-circle with the date was sufficient for visual works) and are copyrighted for 95 years from the "publication" date, and works "published" after 1978 are covered for the life of the artist plus 70 years or 95 years if made for hire or anonymous. According to his website, the artist, Sidney Simon, died in 1997, so by our current law, the fountain (if the copyright was retained by him) will not be out of copyright until the end of 2067. If the complex owns the copyright, it will be public domain in 2084. That this is the case is preposterous. As Mr Bumble exclaimed, upon hearing of a consequence of the law of coverture, if that's how the law sees it "then the law's a ass". However, if that's how the law sees it then it's still the law. As with other concepts such as Orphan works in the United States and Freedom of panorama there are pressure groups for looser protection from photography and other potential violations, but the groups for tightness have been winning. Without a central legal enactment, local authorities could specify that a public sculpture paid by public funds would have to be free from copyright (or, free at least as regards photography) but most new statuary in New York nowadays is by private funds, and anyway politicians see no reason for such an abstruse enactment. Another NYC trip

My wife insists on driving to NYC (my working definition of insanity) on Friday. One thing I'll try to do is get a photo of Shearwater (schooner) which is the last unphotographed NRHP site in Manhattan. It does exist, has public tours and a schedule! See User:Smallbones/draft . On the chance that I can't get there, could you check it out sometime after Tuesday? We'll probably drive into the south part of Brooklyn to get some NRHP photos there, as long as we are in NYC.

I've been rather sick for the last 7 weeks, so haven't been keeping up with everything I intended to do on Wikipedia. How was your experience with QR codes? Mine has been a bit disappointing. The small tags do initially appear as if they will stay up for months at a time, but even nicely placed ones get taken down, and a soaking rain smears the ink if it is on wood. Out of a dozen or so tags placed, only one is "still working." It is inside on the local Starbucks's bulletin board, and has "a full page" of article text as well as the QR code. They seem to like it and it may stay up there indefinitely. How much good it does is another question. (page views are about the same over the last 4 months).

I've been thinking about presenting this method to university students. They usually have access to special student bulletin boards (or access to administrators who control university bulletin boards), lots of university related articles - e.g. the U of Q Center for the Advanced Study of Thingamajigs, and NRHP buildings, etc. I'm not sure university students would be interested in posting these, but might give it a try. Any thoughts? I might also try some special events, e.g. the anniversary of the Battle of Germantown - there are 15 NRHP sites (and several other articles) in the area - just put 'em up and take 'em down a week later if I can't get some institutional help.

Any help or feedback welcome.

I've been busy with other pictures, this being the brief season when morning sun shines on north sides of Manhattan and Bronx buildings. I didn't realize the Shearwater sailed a few times per day in summertime from North Cove, a place which I approach within a mile most weeks including probably tomorrow (Thursday) and maybe Saturday on my way back from a possible Brooklyn Navy Yard tour. So, I'll stay inland when passing, until next week after which I'll be more interested in passing when she might be in port. Nearly all my Brooklyn pix this summer have been in the north including some subway stations uploaded this week.

This has left no time for anything with QR codes, not even figuring how to print them. I don't think inkjet printers are relevant because they'll always run when wet, but my cheap laser might do the job. Someone must research how posters are made to resist rain; perhaps they are coated after printing and perhaps Staples sells some stuff to smear on them. As for students, no idea. I think the Wiki newbies workshop at Canal St and Broadway Tuesday evening is focusing on college outreach; I'll bring up the topic but won't be properly prepared to advise them how to proceed if anyone is interested. Turns out, catching it at the dock is easy; due to a construction detour I snapped her on my way home from the Staten Island Ferry but not under sail. She cast off with a private party of Wall Streeters and went out under motor to Statue of Liberty for a sunset cruise but didn't unfurl. Phooey on that; you got the good one; who wants a motor party boat that's only theoretically a sailboat? Next visit to Liberty State Park I'll keep a weather-eye peeled. All right; I visited the 91st Street site this morning, snapped some very poor pictures, studied the situation and learned that it can be well photographed in the afternoon (as another photographer learned when taking the snap you link to). I spent a part of the afternoon with the excellent fellow and smart photographer Daniel and a dozen other Wikpedians, and part with another Wikifriend in Vinegar Hill and Williamsburg (getting better pictures there). I am trying to decide how much time to invest in that article and knowing that there is a competent editor glancing over my sometimes slash and burn editing style is a comfort and an incentive. It's the usual life cycle of an editor or at least one type of editor. We start by entering new information, sometimes in a disjointed or even messy way, on whatever our passion is. Once Wikipedia knows all the remotely interesting things we know, we either quit or learn to tidy and knit together the joints. Photo at St. Ann's Church Complex (Bronx, New York)

OK, so on reflection, the photo could be better... As an fyi, I am trying to clean out Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in New York by figuring out which have photos and pigeon holing the rest by county. The state category was much too big and unwieldy to be of real use, IMHO. So far there have been only a hand full that had photos and REALLY needed new photos, I guess this could be considered one.

Oh, you've been doing good and much-needed work, neatening the messes some of us leave behind the scenes of Wikipedia. I've been following your progress through my watchlisted articles, which are mostly on my watch becase I've added a picture even if only a bad one. Of course that means I should have taken down the photorequest flag myself, but there's always something more exciting to do than this kind of housekeeping.

Incidentally (1) the reason the photorequest header in a talk page, as in Talk:Putnam County Trailway, doesn't say what place it is, is that no Wikipedian has yet been put in the county category.

Incidentally (2) when a photoreq category gets down to a hundred so requests, it would be easier to run around in a township, county or other area snapping every requested picture, if there were a box to click similar to the one in Commons:Category:National Register of Historic Places in Bronx County, New York to create a map of the requests. Thanks for the kudos. I am aware of #1, which is a shortcoming of the template. Did you know that if there are two in's in the tag, they are displayed, even if there are no Wikipedians there? I probably should ask for a change there. As for #2, I found a template that includes those links, and I think I included it in all the county sub categories I made. One of the things that drove me to this insanity was the fact that the Bing link is currently limited to the first 200 found, although the Google one is not! Ah. Splendid; you've been doing your homework as I have not. So, clicking the template indeed shows me where the photos are wanted. Of course, when even a hundred are on a map, it's slightly difficult to read. Also I can't see it anyway with my little Android phone which lately is my main guide to targets, so I'll have to carry a paper printout. Busy, busy. Instead of answering you, I was out on my bike Sunday taking pictures in Brooklyn and Queens, and Monday doing mostly real-life things. Today, Tuesday was processing and uploading pix mostly of The Bronx and East River. Processing more river pix tomorrow, and hope the weather is good in another day to pedal through a big chunk of Bergen County with my favorite biker gang. Before saddling up I'll see whether a useful map of wanted places there can be printed. I'm totally convinced that copyright paranoia is actively harming Wikipedia as a viable reference source. We seem to be cutting off our nose to spite our face, sacrificing good, legally-available content in order to adhere to a specific ideologically-based concept of what "free" means. It's totally ridiculous, and this tagging is as good an example of it as I've come across lately. In any case, I'm so certain of the image's free-ness that I've moved it to Commons. While I understand your opinion, I think it is a bad idea to remove the {{subst:puf}} statement while the discussion still is going on at Wikipedia:Possibly unfree files/2011 December 4#File:KeithRomaFP2.JPG. I also think that it is a bad idea to move an image to Commons while its legality is being discussed. For your reference, I have added links to a few similar situations to the discussion at the Possibly unfree files page. I've gone through the History of the United States Constitution rewriting to condense and modify my earlier narrative style into something more summary and encyclopedic. Looks like 10104 words now, even though I've added and expanded sections. Cutting the debate tit-for-tat that you recommended sort of sucked out the drama, like balanced, well edited encyclopedia copy is supposed to do. But you gotta know it hurt to cut the splashing hand pumps in that sweltering summer on the street corners of Independence Hall. Anyhow, could you do a quick read-over for style and other there?
