IRC Channels and language

Hi James!, this is Damian from Wikimania (the Venezuelan guy :P) I have a question if you could find it in your heart to answer, recently I was with professor of mine browsing spanish wikipedia and he joined the IRC channel that's advertised on it, my intention was to show him how serious wikipedia is (specially in spanish) but when he joined that IRC channel, the language used in it, was, well, let's just say there isn't a MPAA rating for it. It was really, really, vulgar. Because of this he claimed that Wikipedia wasn't really serious, I told him that the IRC channel was different and not connected in anyway by Spanish Wikipedia, and he said that it was advertised on the the Wiki page and run by Wiki admins so it was 'connected', I said 'touche'. So, after he stopped talking I joined the channel and asked them why they were using such a harsh language sometimes and if they could moderate it a bit. They said they were all used to each other and there was a lot of trust, and I said that's not the case, specially when people join the channel to ask questions (newbie questions) or similar and that using such a harsh language might give the wrong impression of Spanish Wikipedia. I was promptly kicked from the channel. After I spoke with the OP he said that I was a bit aggressive and that I should take more calmly, which I did but the answer remained the same. So the question is, is there a guideline, or code of conduct that must be adopted by Wikipedia ran IRC channels or communications? I bet if I send a message to the wiki mail list with f**k or other curses I would promptly get kicked out, so what's the difference between IRC and mail list other than the obvious technical things that have some COC be applied on one and not the other?. Portuguese IRC Channel Renaming

Hi

I am a wikizine reader, and through it I knew about chat.wikizine.org, the online IRC interface for wikimedia's freenode channels. I asked Walter to add the portuguese channel, as there were already some language-specific channels included. He added the channel #wikipedia-pt, but after I annouced this on the pt:wp announcements page I was been told that the portuguese channel was actually called #pt.wikipedia, which is in fact stated on pt:Wikipedia:Chat.

After some investigation, i found out that the portuguese channel was indeed in the list to be renamed, according to m:IRC channel renaming. I posted that on the annoucements page, but had no answer so far. I also entered on #wikimedia channel at chat.wikizine.org to ask someone about this. I spoke to Oscar, who told me that to his knowledge the #wikipedia-pt already existed for about an year or so, and suggested me to talk to Nuno Tavares, who didn't answer yet, either :S

So i am asking you, expecting to get some enlightment in this subject...

PS - btw, I think you'd consider moving the previous section (firefoxman) to under the correct section (IRC cloaks)

Another issue: we at portuguese wikipedia, are discussing the creation of a site to allow users to use IRC chat without installing an IRC client. We are planning to translate the java.freenode.net applet and use it to access the portuguese channels(#wikipedia-pt and #vandalism-pt-wp). My question is: if it comes to be impossible to connect to pt.wikipedia RC from it, would you recommend us to use an alternative freenode channel as finland does, with #wikipedia-fi/rc instead of #fi.wikipedia (as stated in m:IRC channels)?
