verifiability policy Re:List of materials science conferences

Hi, I've added in a couple of references to indicate importance of meetings in the list (demonstration of >15K attendees for MRS meetings, and importance to major research network), is there anything else that should to be added to cover the verifiability requirements? Help

You are presently dealing with my submission on "The Jones Sewing Machine Co.". The numbers 1-4 have appeared above the references. Was I meant to put the (ref) tags in the text? If not, what do I do with these numbers.

Secondly, on the "Singer Sewing Machine Company" page I have added 3 pictures near the bottom with one more to come. Two of them are displayed but the first one will not show, although I have checked the file name and that it has uploaded. Can you spot what I am doing wrong because I carried out the same procedure for all three pictures.

Crediable source

Hi

It was souced from a newspaper which sells hundred of thousands of copies per week. how is that not a crediable source. Article Rejection

Hello, I submitted a band article that you have rejected. I would like to get some help on getting it approved. The band, Gospel Claws, that I wrote the article about has a member, Joel Marquard, from Dear and the Headlights which is band that has toured nationally and has its own wikipedia page, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dear_and_the_Headlights, which has been approved. In the years since Marquard left Dear and the Headlights to form Gospel Claws, it has gained notability on its own. They have been featured on NPR All Songs Considered, Paste Magazine, charted on CMJ Top 200 and FMQB Submodern chart. They have also recorded with Bob Hoag, whose wikipedia page lists Gospel Claws, to produce two albums which were released on an indie record label, Common Wall Media, nationally. As far as I can tell they don't meet WP:MUSIC's notability criteria at this time. As notability is not inherited the fact that Hoag recorded with them does not confer notability, nor that one of the members was a member of Dear and the Headlights. Jarkeld (talk) 21:05, 23 February 2011 (UTC)

article submission

I have submitted the article for the band Capade and it was declined (Declining submission: subject appears to be a non-notable musical performer or work) The article has references to 3 reputable newspapers with reviews on the band. It also has links to two reputable music channels, Much Music and Shaw TV. The band has also charted on one of the Canadian College charts (I can insert that as well). Even without that, when I looked at the guidelines for the article to be notable it required at leas three press references. MANTA Mui Ne.

Hi Jarkeld,

Thanks for reviewing my article from MANTA Mui Ne. Advice please: on how best to write about development of sailing as a new sport for Vietnam, for Wikipedia, without mentioning the developer(s)? Especially if the article is on the essential points of development to keep it short and succinct for your readers. Or not relevant at this stage for Wikipedia, for example, until Vietnam has a sailing federation accepted by ISAF and other things in the pipeline up to 2016? The Vietnam Olympic Committee asked me for help to set up the sport and i told them it is too big for me so i need to connect with others, especially as my work for them has to be probono and delayed the opening of VN's first sailing school. I understand if this is not a subject for Wikipedia or a catch 22.

N.B. Please excuse three more considerations against a wider article (which could be common to other developing countries): (i) i decided it was not fair to mention eight other organisations associated with 'Vietnam sailing development' as two (including one very well known international charter company) left the country to escape local border police bia taxes, one went bankrupt, one has yet to register and is more a drinking club with a once a year event for about ten people, one is successful for export of large boats, one makes copies of dinghy classes locally, two are about to deliver an event in mid to late March, one delivers an event every two years from outside Vietnam for large yachts (and the Vietnamese organisers did not know how best to replicate from Vietnam (which they understand should not be a problem starting with dinghies). (ii) The sails of Vietnamese junks in a north Vietnam bay are currently cosmetic and i can email you my captains' navigation training report which compares Vietnamese and local navigation standards/differences which i could not mention publically in respect of lives lost recently. I can email my captain's navigation handbook in Vietnamese and English which was 99% complete six months ago. (The final 1% design work is underway although two key assistants went on six month honeymoon, extra busy before leaving. (iii) A short article does not need to mention authority Uturns, academic v. financial leverage or other issues. I could mention the authorities i work with, however, they have not really been exposed to the international sport. Please excuse the details which are not upbeat. Another thought in respect of independent advice on conflict of interest (which i need to understand better): There is a chance an instructor of Olympic judges is visiting in March to help review/advise on sailing developments and may have advice on approach/need/not for this article ...if he too is not too busy as his work includes running the legal/umpiring side of sailing for the next Olympics. If you edit the page via [1] you can add names to the table. Basically:

|rowspan="2"|{{esc|Armenia}} is the start of the country's line. For the next 2 | - 1 is the place to put Final or Semifinal to indicate the broadcast where the commentator commentated and the other is the place to put the name of the commentator. For the first step please read: WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS on why that argument is invalid.
Secondly, the article does not signify why we should have an article on him.
Lastly, no reliable sources, independent of the subject, were cited, so even if there was a claim to notability, we still can't accept the submission.
I took a look the page you mentioned: there is a claim to notability, only there are no reliable sources cited. This will be corrected soon.

It was created in main article space. When you search for a certain subject and it does not exist, for example: [9] there is a text mentioning that you can create the article yourself: "You may create the page "Huldtoneel", but consider checking the search results below to see whether it is already covered." If you click the red linked title, you'll be taken to the page and you can start editing.

Hi Donnie. Your question appears to be directed at Jarkeld specifically. When you leave a message on a person's talk page the next time they log in they get a giant orange banner across the top of every page they visit that says "you have new messages", and that banner persists until they visit their talk page. The helpme template calls users who monitor the "Wikipedians looking for help" category to your request, and so it has no use here. DonnieDog, in the 'decline', Jarkeld left a comment regarding WP:POLITICIAN. It would be helpful if you could review that link, and specifically explain which of those 3 criteria you believe the individual meets, and explain why - particularly with regards to significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the source.

  • Refs 1, 2 and 3 are not articles about this person - although they do have a little information about him, I am not seeing "significant coverage".
  • Ref 4 does not look like a "reliable source"; it appears to be a blog-like page.
  • Ref 5 similarly does not give the impression of a reliable source; in addition, I can find no reference to "Manson" on that page.

If you are certain that there is "significant coverage", then you might consider the following suggestions;

  • You seem to misunderstand how 'references' should be used. They should not just appear at the end of the article; each part of the article needs appropriate references - directly after it. For example,

He is the former Mayor of Northfork, West Virginia.[citation needed] Prior to being elected mayor, Nick was a successful businessman in Northfork.[citation needed] He also continued to own and operate his own restaurant in Northfork during his time as Mayor.[citation needed] Nick has been a key political figure in McDowell County, West Virginia for many years.[citation needed]

Any information that cannot be verified does not belong on Wikipedia.
  • In addition, it needs to be neutral. Terms such as "a successful businessman" and "a key political figure" are opinion, not factual.

The current proposed article contains words that introduce bias and unsupported attributions.

My most important suggestion though, DonnieDog, is: work on some other Wikipedia articles. By doing so, you will gain experience in all these matters, as well as getting help from other Wikipedians. We have plenty of articles that need help. There is no deadline; the draft will not be deleted - you can always come back to it, in some weeks or months.

Monmouth Civic Chorus

Hi, user Jarkeld: This is user Tenorio40 writing on March 27, 2011. So far, we haven't had too much time (with taxes due April 15 and my collaborator going to Maryland 3 days this week, and I being busy all week preparing a Friday lecture on 3G Wireless Network design). So far, we have 31 references in our article, and we have found over 250 more external citations.

We have found more than 250 articles with extensive reviews of our chorus performances at local newspaper websites. My collaborator and I are engaged in a raging debate whether we should include any of 80 additional articles we have found in the New York Times. New York City is an hour away, and the 80 New York Times articles we found at www.nytimes.org are short announcements in the "New Jersey forthcoming events" section. We did not find any New York Times reviews of our performance reviews.

Clearly the New York Times is better known than "The Asbury Park Press" or "The Hub" or "The Independent". It would "look" better if we include at least a few references to show that the New York Times considers us important enough to include us in their "New Jersey forthcoming events" section. Do you agree?

But the bulk of our references should be reviews in "The Asbury Park Press", "The Hub", and other local newspapers, right? For readers who want to know what classical music reviewers wrote about our concerts, those links would be of higher value. Do you agree?

Our debate is about how many New York Times "forthcoming events" links we should list in our reference section, vs. how many local newspaper reviews we should list.

We also wonder how much is enough. We feel we can easily provide 150 newspaper review references in our reference list, if not more. Should we spend the time, effort and energy to locate and cite so many? How many are enough?

By "lede", do you mean the Introduction, i.e. the leading section? I agree. My collaborator has been focused on other sections and today I started thinking we can include references also in the History section. We can certainly also add references to the Introduction. Thanks for your comment about the tone of the introduction being somewhat promotional -- I will raise this issue with two of my collaborators on the Wiki page.

You didn't answer any of my questions - How many references are required and what is the value of New York Times references which are just "forthcoming event" notices? Perhaps the lack of a reply means there are no firm and set requirements.

Forthcoming event links: perhaps better to avoid them for the most part: it hasn't happened yet and can be misconstrued as promotional. Better are the reviews in the local papers. As you can probably tell we are passionate about our chorus :-) We have a bit of a challenge: our local newspaper, the Asbury Park Press, has 139 articles mentioning MCC, but charges for access to articles ($3.99 each or 10 for $12 -- excessive in my view, but ...). I don't really understand the difference between these two URL's.

Anyway, I just wanted to mention that I've been to Alkmeer, Edam, Enkhuizen, Den Haag, Leiden, Haarlem, etc. I dated a great lady from Amsterdam for a few years and was there almost every 2 months for 2 years. I miss eating Uitsmijter and Pannekoeken with spek. I really love Holland. Holland is Heel goed, and really lekker. Best,

User Armbrust gave the article a C-Class grade. That is disappointing. I will ask Armbrust for specific suggestions how to bring it up to the next level.

Re: Controversy

It's best to remove the section on the Channel Awesome page called "Controversy" as the section has little to nothing to do with the company itself and more to do with inside drama within the company. The section also clearly lies about Rizzo's involvement with Transmission Awesome. He did not create the podcast. The company article isn't the place for Internet drama and does not need to be on the page. Furthermore, stating that he was "blanket banned" and is an "unperson" is slander.
