Foreign character

Secondly, please do not convert inline citations to external links, as you have done here - if anything you should be doing it the other way around! I was just a bit uncomfortable with the fussballdaten.de statistics page being used as a direct citation as to its general specifics. As for the place of birth, I added it to the opening paragraph as it was the only paragraph. Of course it needn't be there if there was a body of text, but there isn't one yet. Hi, as you can see I'm no good at spotting copyvios. The Klose image didn't look like one taken from the club's website (it was obviously shot at the match on Wednesday) so I thought that it was possible that it was a legal image. Tallinn

Hi Jared, regarding free public transportation in Tallinn: see http://news.err.ee/society/e065014d-9d67-43a2-8f3a-f6cacb54cdae. There was a vote yesterday, this is the outcome. The only thing to make it more accurate is ´free rides on city-operated bus, trolley and tram lines to registered city residents as of 2013´. BTW, the issue is now also already mentioned in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_transport_in_Tallinn. Re: {{Fb cl team 2pts}}

The only thing to replace it would be to create something similar to {{Fb cl2 team}}, only with two points for a win instead of the (now) regular three. Maybe name it something along the lines of {{Fb cl2 team 2pts}}.

As for the general substitution of the league and results tables in season articles, I'm still thinking about a solution on how to replace {{Fb r header}}, {{Fb r team}} and related stuff. While the non-usage of these templates would basically revert the results box to a basic wikitable, I am still reluctant to go that way because of two reasons – a likely increase of (tedious) endash-related clean up and, if the rows are indeed set up as single lines, a more complicated table structure.

In any case, if the team templates are really to be substituted one day, it should be done by a bot, because we don't want to go through a few thousand articles/league table templates by hand. --Soccer-holicI hear voices in my head... 07:53, 28 March 2012 (UTC)

Hey mate, you recently put my two templates (Techno Aryan and Tolly) on deletion but the thing is if you delete them then on the league table that they are on it would say Fb team:Techno Aryan instead of Techno Aryan. For the last few days, Koppapa (talk · contribs) and I have only been deleting orphaned templates. You could certainly help us by orpahning more, simply by replacing {{fb cl team}} with {{fb cl2 team}} and by linking the team name in the league table with square brackets [[]]. PB/SB

Hi Jared. Thanks for the compliment! Typically I leave the personal/season's best marks off the main page and leave that kind of information to the athlete biography and event sub-articles. World/Olympic/National records are of much greater importance and additional notations distract from this in my opinion. From a main page perspective, PBs and SBs might become irrelevant in the following weeks, thus their inclusion can't really be deemed in the same light and SBs have the added issue of a need to monitor them in case an athlete runs better. I'm not a note nazi though - I typically leave things as they are as long as they are correct. SFB 20:24, 13 August 2012 (UTC)

  1. WP:DOY does not state any such consensus, at least that I could find. If there is such a written consensus, please let me know where to find it.
  2. When you disagree with only one aspect of a complex edit, it is polite to undo the aspect you disagree with and leave the rest. There were more than a dozen other carefully-made changes with over an hour of time invested, and my edit description, "spaced initials; dashes; commas; sp. slight; capitalization; wikilinks; avoid redirects", should have indicated that this was a complex edit. —Anomalocaris (talk) 19:26, 3 September 2012 (UTC)
I'm sorry you spent so much time for such an edit; I'd have wrongly assumed you were using WP:AWB. Each day of the year has this massive edit notice at the top of the page:

Please take note of the third bulletpoint. On 18 May you made an edit to the "February 25" article despite the page notice having been installed two months previously and I later had to manually change the dashes back to the accepted HTML format. A lot of editors mistake the ndash for a hyphen and upon adding new entries to the lists make exactly this mistake; this is why we use the HTML code. However, I do appreciate the changes you made. re: Mirjana Lučić

Hi Jared Preston! I have always thought when you get married it is hyphened. For example Zahlavova-Strycova and Gallovits-Hall, but all of the Spanish players on Wikipedia have no hyphen. I'm not sure whether Mirjana's page will still stay as Mirjana Lucic though. Keroks (talk)

Well that is because Spanish people from birth on generally have two "surnames". I would suggest moving Mirjana Lučić to the hyphenated Mirjana Lučić-Baroni, as you say, since it is a double-barrelled married name. Going without a hyphen just seems to me to be some personal style. Unless you object, I will move the article title on the grounds that not only the WTA and ITF use the hyphen, australianopen.com do so too, as well as Croatian news articles (here Slobodna Dalmacija, for example). Since Gatto-Monticone is Italian, I would leave it as it is. There's nothing I can think of that would suggest her name should be written any other way, but Duque Mariño is fine. The only thing I would suggest there is a WP:HISTMERGE. Jared Preston (talk) 04:32, 14 February 2013 (UTC)
Hi! I've stumbled on something lately. I'm very confused about the situation with names that have like 'van xxx' or 'de xxx' or 'di xxx'. There is Alison Van Uytvanck which was previously written as Alison van Uytvanck but changed for some reason? I'm unsure of what to do with the likes of Dutch players like Angelique van der Meet, Indy de Vroome and Federica di Sarra. There is Daniela Di Toro, i'm just confused with this whole situation. Dutch people always write these surnames in lower case, like van der Meet and de Vroome. Belgians always write theirs in upper case, like Van Uytvanck. Obviously it depends on punctuation. If I start a sentence by writing "De Vroome is..." then the D would also be capitalised. Federica di Sarra is Italian, and as far as I'm aware, most Italians, like the Dutch, also write "di" in lower case. I had never heard of Daniela Di Toro before, but she's Australian. Di Toro is not a typical Australian name – that just appears to be style, to write "Di" in upper case. Thiemo de Bakker is Dutch, so again, that would explain the lower case. I hope that helps! Some browsers (1–5%) can show wrong the articles with such incorrect wiki-markup. I don't see reasons why tennis only articles must be without trailing markup. I don't know which browsers you may be referring to, but as a matter of fact, these are probably browsers which aren't supported by mediawiki in any case. There is a blacklist for unsupported browsers for reasons that are unknown to me – these could potentially cause problems viewing wiki-markup on any page. The fact is, due to line breaking and time-saving when inputting scores, it really is a whole lot easier to do it the "quick" way (certainly not by using WP:VE which many browsers don't support yet anyway), and it makes no difference to the saved page in most (up-to-date, supported) browsers. Which one do you use? I don't know what else to suggest, I'm not the only one employing this method and I doubt consensus will go your way... Jared Preston (talk) 12:41, 31 July 2013 (UTC)

Tennis in Turkey

Yes, this is strange. I wonder what happened to the Batman tournament. They probably wouldn't have had the infrastructure to hold an event there anyway! If the Trabzon organisers don't come up with any new event name, then we can just have one article (2013 Trabzon Cup) for both events, naming the draws 1 and 2 if necessary. The Batman articles can simply be redirected to the main article ITF Women's Circuit until a point in time at which the event might actually take place. Why are WTA finals are listed with (5 titles, 3 runners-up), but ITF finals listed (5-3)? An anon says that is the type of formatting that's used stated in the guidelines of Tennis WikiProject. Whether it's a guideline or not, I don't think it should be used. As far as I'm concerned, there isn't consensus... If someone doesn't know what 5–3 means, then they probably wouldn't understand the tennis scores or statistics either. The very fact that the sections are entitled "finals" means that the rest is self-explanatory. "1 (1 title)" just seems stupid, just like "2 (1 title, 1 runner-up)". I don't think anyone has problems with 1+1=2. Even 8=3+5. The outcome column also lists whether or not a tournament was won, or if the player was a runner-up. 125s capitalization

I see you moved the page from "WTA 125K Series" to "WTA 125K series", de-capitalizing the word "series." I believe this is incorrect as the term "WTA 125K Series" is the full name as per the WTA. Series is always capitalized and isn't just a tagged on term. It's also here. Just like we don't write it "US open" it should be the "WTA 125K Series" just as the WTA calls it... WTA 125s for short. I see the problem in both ways. In the meantime, I have added the logo to the parent article. I'm not sure it's as straightforward as calling this series of events a proper name, like the US Open. I hadn't noticed the logo didn't use a capital S. Ambiguity by the WTA so I'll leave it as is. Thanks for pointing that out. What's also funny is that on the 125s articles it says that "some media outlets" have misnamed it as a "WTA Challenger." That's not entirely true... the Official website of the 2013 OEC Taipei 125 calls it the 2013 OEC Taipei WTA Challenger. So not just media outlets, some official tournaments now. No, I wouldn't be surprised either. What with the G(g)rand S(s)lams (and that's a good question too, should this term always be written in caps or not?) offering ever more prize money, I can imagine that the WTA will offer bigger prize funds for their tournaments too. Come 2014 or 2015, it may well turn into a 150K series! What also caught my eye is the article on de.wiki, "de:WTA Challenger Series". Have you seen the logo there? continuous unsensless edits

Hi, i see that you made several edits as in Mandy Minella, Sabine Lisicki or Timea Babos pages that can be disruptives for the entire community. First of all, when you have a WTA or ATP finals the title is "WTA career finals" and NOT "WTA finals" or "WTA Career Finals". Secondly, year-end championships and masters finals are NOT major finals. Major finals are ONLY to be labeled as such for the 4 Majors (Australian,French,Wimbledon and US championships) to avoid confusion for any of our readers. We either omit it or use "significant" in place of "major" when referring to those lesser tournaments. Third but not the last, when there are a description like this: "Doubles: 3 (1-2)" the correct format is "Doubles: 3 (1 title, 2 runners-up)" as these guidelines says. First of all, I have been on Wikipedia for quite some time making edits to tennis articles, and you, without any prejudice, made your first edit 48 hours ago! Disruption? How does "WTA career finals" make any grammatical sense? Of course they are WTA finals of a player's career, it is, after all, a biography about the career of the player on which you are commenting. Point two, I have never made any edits to those extent – and I agree with you (in as so far as I understood what you have written) and point three: where do the guidelines actually state this? I think you are making this up! There is no project guideline for this, and if there were – it would be wrong. Take a look at the thread on this page from user:Raul17 from a fortnight ago. May I reiterate: nobody reading these biographies, who makes it as far to said statistics sections, is going to read WTA finals and then not know how to add a list of eight tournaments, each showing whether or not an event was won or the player was a losing finalist, together, see "(5–3)", and not know that five plus three equals eight. 5 titles is just a repetition of the following statistics to follow and superfluous. Hello. A few months ago I made an article about the Bulgarian tennis player Borislava Botusharova, but it got deleted, because the player didn't pass the notability guidelines for tennis players. This week she is in the national team for the 2014 Fed Cup Europe/Africa Zone matches, so I want to ask you a few questions. Will she be considered notable in case she plays in one of the matches this week, so if I made the article it won't get deleted again? Seeing as she is Swiss, I'd assume Swiss sources are more likely to spell her name correctly (with diacritics etc.) than the BBC or WTA who usually don't bother. Proposed deletion of Polina Vinogradova

Hi there, I have examined the notability criteria for tennis players, under which you proposed the deletion of the page I created, Polina Vinogradova. Unfortunately, it seems to be out of date. Under criteria no. 5, it is declared that a player is notable if they "have won at least one title in any of the 2008–2012 ITF Women's $35,000–$100,000+ tournaments. From 1978–2007 the notability threshold shall be winning a $25,000 tournament based on the lowest payout for a men's challenger tournament in the same year." There is no existing criteria for players who have won ITF tournaments [b]after[/b] the year 2012. Polina has won several $25K tournaments so far, in addition to having reached the top 200 (and she will rise even higher after her recent participation in qualifying for the 2014 French Open); she recently participated in her first qualifying at a WTA event at Nürnberg and her ranking will enable her to continue to do so and improve her ranking, meaning that a WTA main draw will not be far away. I appreciate that most of this does not quite fulfill the criteria just yet, but due to the criteria's lack of clarity on players who have won an ITF tournament after 2012, I ask you to reconsider the deletion of my article for now until this can be clarified. Just a quick question; if the article was deleted, and Polina then fulfilled the criteria in a more obvious way (aka 5. was made clearer or she matched another of the points); would you be able to restore my previous article, or would it have to be written from scratch? A player is deemed notable if they have won a $35,000 ITF event since 2008. Since there are no $35,000 events on the ITF Women's Circuit, the next higher tier is $50,000. Vinogradova has, to date, only won $25,000 tournaments. If we were to include every player who has won one of these, then we'd have dozens if not hundreds of articles more. These aren't my rules, I can only try to abide by them. Taking part in a qualifying tournament of a WTA event doesn't count either, unfortunately. The same goes for Grand Slams. Presuming the article is deleted and she does become notable in the future, then an administrator can restore the article to its previous state. Jared Preston (talk) 20:18, 31 May 2014 (UTC)

Hey, Just wondering shouldn't the 'v' of her name be left not capitalised? I did some research and I found out that South African's with Dutch surnames don't usually capitalise the 'van', 'der' and etc. For example Izak van der Merwe and Rik de Voest who are South African tennis players as well.

That's what the Challenger Tour does. It doesn't make it any less legit. The 2014 McDonald's Burnie International in January even had the ITF Women's Circuit event ranked at $50K. As a rule of thumb, events at the same tournament are notable, which is why we also have drawsheets for the juniors at the Grand Slams, even if the junior players themselves aren't automatically notable. Anne Schäfer

Hello,

I recently created two articles but they have been selected to be deleted for not meeting the tennis notability rules. I am considering creating another article, "Anne Schäfer". She is a German tennis player who reached a career-high ranking of 161 in March 2009. Although she hasn't won any tournaments above the 25K level, she has been inside the Top 200 rankings. Will this statistic be enough to claim notability on this player?

@Zane Nariman: Unfortunately, it doesn't matter how high a tennis player is ranked to warrant an article on the English Wikipedia. The guidelines don't support this, although it was mentioned last year on the project discussion page(s) (here and here). There was an article on Anne Schäfer, but it was deleted for not being notable – I had no idea about the guidelines back then and had frequently updated her stats. 100k Bogota in August

Hey, so there is a 100k in Bogota starting in the week of August 11. The name given for the event on the ITF website is simply just Seguros Bolívar Open. I would have named this event Seguros Bolívar Open Bogotá but there is obviously already a men's event for that which I do not think are joint events. So what should we name this event?

Yes, this is quite confusing since there are so many Seguros Bolívar Opens. Of course one possibility would be to name it the "ITF Women's Circuit – Bogotá" tournament, but the ITF evidently have an official name for the event, and that is "Seguros Bolívar Open". I would be inclined to move Open Seguros Bolívar back to Seguros Bolívar Open Bogotá, add in the women's singles and doubles sections with previous winners and then create 2014 Seguros Bolívar Open Bogotá, which wouldn't be incorrect. The official website is no longer online, but with the help of the ITF's tournament history, http://www.itftennis.com/procircuit/tournaments/women%27s-calendar.aspx?tour=Bogota&reg=&nat=&sur=&cate=&iod=&fromDate=01-01-1994&toDate=31-12-2014, you can see here the previous tournaments to be held in Bogotá. We already have 2010 Seguros Bolívar Open Bogotá – Women's Singles and 2011 Open Seguros Bolívar – Women's Singles, joint events were the women's prize category was $25K, but how far back do the women's events go? The Spanish Wikipedia shows at least 2007 for the ITF (Women's Circuit), although the 2007 winners were at the $10K event in July of that year and there's no entry for the $25K event one month later, but it's possible they were forgotten. Saint-Malo tournament

Hi Jared! Just a few questions that need to be answered here regarding the L'Open Emeraude Solaire de Saint-Malo that I have just created. In the 2011 Open GDF Suez de Bretagne page it states that there were 12 previous editions whilst I could only find them up to 2008. Hi @Keroks! This web archive was a great help in clearing this up. It states that the 2010 version was the 15th event of the tournament "created" in 1996. This ITF calendar page shows all the events which took place in Dinan (1996–2007), obviously the host city before Saint-Malo. As you can see, starting from a $10K event, the prize money has risen steadily throughout the years. Prior to having been sponsored by GDF Suez, the main sponsor was Gaz de France, like many other French tennis tournaments. You're more than welcome to have a root through the archives for more sources, but I think that's a good start to be getting on with. Do you want to add the tournament's previous winners? Dalila Jakupovič

Hi Jared again :D Just wondering about the name Jakupovič... I'm not too sure about this and not sure if its with the č or ć. Theres already a page about the surname Jakupović and I've searched and there are no Jakupovič's anywhere, so I might be thinking that she may come from a Bosnian/Croatian background but is Slovenian. Therefore should her surname be Jakupović? Its also here http://lastnames.myheritage.com/last-name/Jakupovi%C4%87 as a Bosnian and Croatian surname.. I think we might have to change this one. $25,000 events in Sharm el-Sheikh

Hi Jared Preston, just an inquiry that needs a second opinion. So all year the $10k Sharm el-Sheikh events have been held at Jolie Ville Golf Resort, but in the last week of October and the first two weeks of November there appears to be three $25k Sharm el-Sheikh events which are held at Soho Square. I remember last year there was the Soho Square Ladies Tournament, could this be the same tournament but split into three? The only problem is that last year it was held on clay and now it is on hard courts.

Untitled AfD discussion

I'm trying to figure out which AfD discussion an untitled thread at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Log/2014 October 25 is about. After opening the log page, search for/use find feature for the phrase, "Player in question does not meet notability requirements as outlined here. Does not meet any of the six possible criteria." Taipei WTA Ladies Open

I like what you did to the Taipei WTA Ladies Open. Looks nice and clean. One thing though. Per consensus we must order the event oldest to newest, and this is in backwards order. Since you did the work I thought I'd have you figure out the best way to do that. 2014 Orto-Lääkärit Open

I thought you were against the creations of tournaments under the prizemoney of $50k for the women's circuit, but yet you create a page for a $10k tournament? Keroks (talk) 23:50, 8 November 2014 (UTC)

@Keroks: I have always advocated drawsheets for the women if they have competed at the same ATP Challenger Tour event as the men. As this is the case in Finland this week, the IPP Open is held alongside the Orto-Lääkärit Open, and even though the event has two names or two sponsors (that shouldn't actually matter), the fact that both men and women are playing at one location in the same week (and the men's event is on its own notable), then the women's draws should also be shown. Take a look at the tournament website: http://www.ippopen.net/ the women are just as prominent as the men here. Obviously I wouldn't be creating articles for the other $10,000 events in Greece, Morocco, Spain, Tunisia and Turkey, only here where the women are playing at one tournament together with the notable men's tour. If the organisers choose to give the women's competition a different name, or if the ITF award for women less money, that shouldn't be our concern. I should probably merge the previous winners lists into the main article as per previous discussions at AfD and on my talk page. But anyway, a similar example is the Fergana Challenger, with the only difference being that it's $25K prize fund for women, but here we also have women's drawsheets because they have competed at the same competition as the men. Samarkand

You reverted my changes to smarkand. Markanda is auto-redirected to Smarkand ..which is WRONG...it should at least go to disembiguation. there are OTHER VERY PROMINENT places and things with EXACT name MARKANDA. I am trying to remove auto-redirect from markanda to smarkand (not sure how to do it, pls lend your help if you know how to do it) if not then at least direct it to disambiguation and MARKANDA must not be AUTO-HIJACKED by SAMARKAND.
