Please use article move

Please use article move rather than to create completely new article with right diacritics and then copying the text. Using move preserves the history of the page.

Right now Plzeň's history length is /1/ and all old information is lost. I would like if you can ask some administrator to delete Plzeň page and then move Plzen to new name. Thanks. Pavel Vozenilek 28 June 2005 22:56 (UTC)

It's more about history of the article that is lost, not talk. Plzen is third largest city in the Czech Republic a got quite a few edits in it. An clean move would be much welcomed.. Pavel Vozenilek 30 June 2005 02:08 (UTC)

Edit counting

I need help running one of the back-up edit counters since neither Kate's nor Interiot's tools are working these days. I've read stuff about java script but don't know what it is. Is there no simple way of finding out how many edits a user has without counting them all on the contributions page? – Jared Preston 07:35, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

Hello there. There appear to be two main non-toolserver editcounters at the moment: Interiot's Javascript-based tool (User:Interiot/Tool2/code.js) and Wikipedia:WikiProject edit counters/Flcelloguy's Tool. The former is easy to install - refer to http://paperlined.org/apps/wikipedia/Tool2/ for full instructions. The latter, I haven't tried, but it's a Java (not Javascript) based solution so it should be easy to install if you have Java already. Hope this helps. I'm sorry to hear that. If you continue to have problems, you might want to contact Interiot, the author of the tool. As for the difference between Javascript and Java, if you're interested, the JavaScript article provides a little insight as to what Javascript is. Java is more like Javascript's big brother, and it can be used to program complete programs that don't necessarily need to run inside a browser, like Javascript. Anyway, apparently the toolserver problem is being fixed, which should mean that the original edit counter will be back online before too long. Good luck, Tangotango 08:29, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

The counter isn't working in IE or Firefox? If it's Firefox, then try pressing cntrl+F5. Can you see the box or just a bunch of code when you view the page? As for the paper, I read a national paper, The Washington Post. I gave up on The New York Times after finding six grammatical errors in the cover story the first time I picked it up. Go to the edit tool and push cntrl+F5 to refresh it. Then look. I just added something to warn users of IE. You used to be a proof-reader? I think I would make an excellent editor. The only thing I hate about the Washington Post is that it gives biased coverage to Palestine over Israel. And the only thing I like about Bush is that he's the first President to support Israel. Speaking of proof reading, go to this Post article. There's a correction at the top. Guess who submitted it? Yup, me. (I also corrected their figure for one year, but they didn't put that in the correction.) I sent something in to Free for All, the Post's correction column, but they didn't put it there - they just published it online (and without a name, something which is in Free for All columns). I can see that you've been reading up on Firefox. In this edit, thank you for formatting that note into a statistic. However, regarding your citation needed note, if you follow the link that says "market adoption" and then click on the "20%", it takes you to a map showing that Finland's Firefox share is 38.4%. Where'd you get that? Google doesn't have a Finish translator?!?!? Anyways, I messaged an admin on the Finnish wikipedia who seems to speak English and was active just one hour ago and asked him/her to respond on my talk page. I hope he/she does! As far as I'm aware, they all mean "cool". At least the German certainly does! *lol* I have another for you to add (I'm not too sure on how you want it all formatted so I'll leave it here at your disposal) and that's Czech: Hustá kočka. That also literally means "cool cat", but hustá, hustý also means "dense". Hustota is Czech for "density". Jared Preston 20:07, 4 June 2006 (UTC)

Paul Klee

Of course Klee was of German nationality; he even served in the German army during World War I. The anon had it right. I'm not sure about the "lost German citizenship" part, though; he fled Germany after the Nazis came to power, but whether he lost his German citizenship, I don't know. I only know that he applied twice for Swiss citizenship after his return to Berne (first time denied because he didn't fulfill the conditions (at least 5 (I think) years resident in Switzerland), second time would have been granted, but he died before his application had been handled). Check the extlinks, in particular the "Zentrum Paul Klee". Maybe you'd like to correct your edit there yourself? Lupo 08:58, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

Sorry, that doesn't make sense. As the child of a German father, he was German. Why else would he have served in the German army?
Furthermore, you write: He did qualify for German citizenship through parentage, but, as you correctly point out, was handed to him too late. It was granted on July 5, but he had died 6 days previously.
That doesn't make sense at all. He applied for Swiss citizenship after he had returned to Berne in 1933, and his second application there was handled too slowly. As the son of a German father and a Swiss mother, German and Swiss are the only possibilities. If he had been Swiss, he wouldn't have needed to apply for Swiss citizenship. Therefore, he was German. Q.E.D.

Not to continue arguing, but it took me some time to actually find explicit statements about this issue. Here are just two results from a Google search for +"paul klee" +"deutscher staatsbürger": "Max Beckmann ist nicht nur einer der bedeutendsten Zeitgenossen von Paul Klee und wie dieser deutscher Staatsbürger...", Zentrum Paul Klee, Berne, Switzerland, and "...erhält Klee als deutscher Staatsbürger einen Einberufungsbefehl...", Franz-Marc Gymnasium, Markt Schwaben, Germany. Also of interest is Ein Schweizer ohne roten Pass, Scientific archive of the Zentrum Paul Klee, Berne, Switzerland and the Swissinfo Special on Paul Klee. In general, if you are interested in the long-term viability of this article, find more sources and add more content. When was the club founded? When has it been mentioned in the news? Hello,

I noticed that you have listed yourself as a Wikipedian in London, so I thought you might like to come to one of our monthly social meetups. The next one is going to be on Sunday 10 August, which might well be rather short notice, but if you can't come this time, we try to have one every second Sunday of the month.

If you haven't been before, these meetups are mainly casual social events for Wikipedia enthusiasts in which we chat about Wikipedia and any other topics we fancy. It's a great way to meet some very keen Wikipedians, but we'd also love for you to come along if you're interested in finding out more about Wikipedia, other Wikimedia projects, or other collaborative wiki projects too.

The location is a pub that is quite quiet and family friendly on a Sunday lunchtime, so hopefully younger Wikipedians will also feel welcome and safe. Alcohol consumption is certainly not required!

Although the meetups are popular, many UK-based editors still don't know about them. It would be great to welcome some fresh faces, so I hope you can come along.

politician stubs

Sorry for the belated answer. here is an explanation of what happened (click "show" to expand the text). Most of these articles were deleted with a comment that it went by your request. More can be found on this old talk page version of another user. So some articles were rescued, and I enhanced them a little with content from de.WP. Were they really bot-created as user:nuclearwarfare told me? Also, I wonder whether more articles were deleted then the ones mentioned in that discussion. Yes, I agree. However, I do believe actions speak louder than words, and seeing that the last four of the IP's five mainspace edits were vandalism, that shows to me that the editor has taken no action other than to sneekily blank the warnings. I don't completely agree with WP:REMOVED as IP addresses get reassigned so there isn't any real ownership of such a user talk page as there would be with a registered editor. But there hasn't been any additional vandalism since the page blanking. Regards. -- Whpq (talk) 16:55, 24 January 2010 (UTC)

I'm afraid that he he also not notable (at best playing in Oberliga according to the sources I found). Ich beziehe mich da immer auf WP:FOOTYN#Player notability. Danach dürften DFB-Pokal-Spiele keine Rolle spielen, wenn der Verein, für den man spielt, kein Profi-Verein ist. Aber ich kann auch auf Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Football nochmal nachfragen.
Zu Johann Gajda habe ich was auf transfermarkt.de gefunden: [1], was nicht auf eine Spielerkarriere hinweist. Dann gibt's noch das PDF hier, in dem steht, dass er als Spieler nur bei Hertha BSC war, und als Trainer u. a. bei Olympiacos F.C., aber vermutlich wohl auch nur als Assistenztrainer (konnte jedenfalls nichts dazu finden). Die anderen Trainerjobs waren auch nur bei niederklassigeren Vereinen. Da fussballdaten.de Johann Gajda auch nicht kennt, vermute ich mal dass er bei Hertha auch nur in der 2. oder 3. I Want It That Way

HI! This hapenned long ago but i still think i have to talk to you about this. I don't know why you kept reverting my edits on 'I Want it That Way'. Some person had changed all the chart positions and for just changing it back, you kept reverting my edits and finally got me banned. If you don't know what I'm talking about look at the revision history of 'I Want It That Way. First of all, I didn't get you banned. Your apparent disruptive behaviour attracted attention from a number of other editors. You do appear to be inept when it comes to edit summaries. If every single one of your edits to that article, just like the others, were undoing vandalism, then why didn't you point it out? My knowledge of the Backstreet Boys is admittedly limited, so if I did make a faux pas in any of their related articles, please accept my apologies. When a vandalism patroller sees dozens of anonymous edits to the same article, and in your case, related articles – changing statistics and facts and without an edit summary – it is incredibly difficult to differentiate fact from fiction. I recommend you sign up, start afresh, read the welcome page, use edit summaries, and win back some of that lost trust. I would also ask you to sign your comments with four tildes, add your comment to the bottom of talk pages, this may only be wikiquette, but can be infuriating to other users – and it does seem you want to take an active role in this project. Please use the preview button too. I'd also suggest you talk to all the other editors who have warned you on your talk page, because I am not the only one who found your edits suspicious (either) at the time (or since then). Template:Talk header

Hi, I see you place this template on a lot of talk pages. Please only place this template when it is needed. It shouldn't be on every talk page one encounters. I'm aware it's not a necessity for every talkpage, but don't think there's any harm in adding it whilst I'm already assessing articles for WikiProjects. I do hope you will stop though. This was first discussed on the template's talk and consensus was reached that this template should only be used when needed. I can't change consensus, but in an effort to defend my edits adding the template to the discussion pages I have done already, I don't believe it's any more harmful than having the BLP template at the top of discussions on BLPs acting as a reminder of the talk page guidelines. Maybe this could be looked at in the future. Overuse is, however, not quite the same as "every talk page". I'm sorry I've pissed you off by having added this to Christian Träsch's discussion page, or indeed any others where you feel it is not required, whilst updating the banners. In no way did I ever think that adding this non-offensive template would be destructive. Just like you, I'm doing my best for Wikipedia with my contributions. I see you have reworded your previous message and don't want you to be angry at me or be in any lousier mood than you should be on this fine Saturday afternoon. I see. No problemo. Actually I didn't think that either Gottschalk or Bohlen were particularly well-known outside Germany... The last paragraph says: "How and when Gottschalk will appear on DSDS isn't known, but Bohlen is certain about one thing: "Good presenters are always needed - he won't make a fool of himself." And whilst gambling bets are bets of honour, Gottschalk could well be...." The whole thing stems back to the last episode of Wetten, dass..? when Bohlen asked Gottschalk when he would come on one of his shows, seeing that Bohlen had come to Gottschalk's shows on a number of previous occasions. WP:COMMONNAME

Hey there, I noticed you moving some football-related pages to their German (Berlin Cup) or official names (FSV Budissa Bautzen). Please be aware that wikipedia has a policy to adopt the most common English name for its articles. In the case of the Landespokal competition in Berlin, I doubt that anyone looking for such a competition (on en:wp) would look for "Berliner Landespokal". Please keep this in mind before moving other pages. Also, it might be sensible to propose such moves on the articles' talk pages in the future, so as to invite a larger pool of opinion on the matter. Well, there has been a number of discussions about the naming of the DFB-Pokal for example, and seeing as the Berliner Landespokal is a local competition with no common English name (being speculative), I can't see where the problem is. Pokal is used in the English language for German cup competitions, and this is a German cup competition. I don't know how many people are "looking for such a competition", seeing as it's a pretty obscure regional Pokal, but it hadn't been updated for years so I chose to do that whilst naming the articles as others have been. In this instance, there is a redirect (and redirects don't hurt), and I even wrote the general "English: Berlin Cup" for anyone who could be confused. I'm currently working on the Brandenburger Landespokal; apart from simply calling it "The Brandenburg Cup", I can't see where there's a common English name for that either. As for FSV Budissa Bautzen, I'm going by the name used on their official website – and one wouldn't take the FSV out of 1. FSV Mainz 05, so why pick on Bautzen? No worries about starting arguments, and you're welcome ;-) You may be right about the cup thing, but I believe that using a generic English name as the article title would be preferable, as it (imho) increases accessibility of the information. The German Cup is different inasmuch as there is enough news coverage in English-language media so as to suggest that indeed DFB-Pokal may be the Common name of the competition.
As for Budissa Bautzen - the diff between Budissa and Mainz is that there is a distinct name item in the former club (Budissa) that is lacking for Mainz. Also, there maybe a common name for Mainz established, but from a first look, I think it might be FSV Mainz 05 (bbc) or Mainz 05 (bundesliga.de/en). Anyway, naming conventions for clubs are a difficult field, and I just wanted to point that out - hence my suggestion of first discussing such moves on the talk pages. Well I think we'll have to agree that it's a grey area. Recently I've been making many edits to German football-related articles, I've put up a number of XfD's to get things sorted out, but with things such as the Berliner Landespokal, I didn't expect anyone would have much of an (unbiased) opinion. I just wanted the Verbandspokalwettbewerbe to follow the same naming convention as the DFB-Pokal and others. I've added the Brandenburgischer Landespokal and Bremer Pokal tonight, maybe you'll have a look. I, personally, think they're fine with the German-language names. My project for some time already has been to do the other Pokale too. Your edits, I see, have been great. Between the both us, I am sure we can keep all of the lower-league articles up to date. Let me know if there's anything you want doing, OK? FSV Union Fürstenwalde shouldn't be a problem in a deletion discussion since they've taken part in the FDGB-Pokal, deeming it notable under the criteria you quoted. Hello. Actually, this was the first time I've found a sensible use for HotCat. As to your GA, thanks for asking, but I'm afraid you're asking the wrong person. I've never reviewed one, and the last thing you want with your first submission is a virgin reviewer. At first glance, I wondered if you had enough prose, but that's probably just me: my GAs were on subjects I was really interested in, so my problem was managing to stop before I'd written a book... You may find that you get a more comprehensive review from a non-football editor.

If you haven't already, you could check the criteria for which bits of the MoS you're supposed to comply with. Looks like there's a bit of a backlog at GAN, so it might be worth listing it for peer review while you're waiting, say on the PR nom that you're looking for comments to help it get through GA. And ask nicely at the footy project talk page for people to visit the PR, there must be people there more helpful and/or knowledgeable than me. I don't mind having a virgin look over my work, haha. But I fully understand your concern and thank you for your speedy reply. It would, in my own opinion, be quite hard to write more about the game without going off on a complete tangent. And as you will see, most of the articles I've created are rather short. I'm a bit of a stub-meister to be honest, allowing others to write content. This was one of the exceptions, and I really enjoyed writing that page. As for the league table, yes, that was the norm in Germany up until the introduction of the 3-point-rule. I've seen this in other sports and personally think it's strange, but there we go. If you click on citation 12, you will see the link to the final league table of the 1977–78 Fußball-Bundesliga. The Wikipedia season article doesn't show this, but it is only a case of having someone add it at some time. I'm just not sure if it's possible to show "points against" by using {{Fb cl header}}. Thanks; List of ACW Generals article vandalism reverted

Thanks for noting and reverting the deletion of two sections from the introductory article on the list of Civil War generals. I see that the IP address from which the deletions originated has been blocked on several occasions already. I need to revise this article both for clarity and to account for the split of the lists of Union and Confederate generals into separate lists. Because of the unexpected uncertainty about which officers should be included or not, and why, and because certain information is common to or related to all or most of the generals, I think a somewhat longer than usual introduction to the lists is valuable in this case. Keeping all of this in one article produced a very long article and the lists are still lengthy by necessity. While some editing is needed, wholesale deletion of these sections - especially in view of the spin off of the lists - does not seem appropriate. Since I left a note on the talk page that some editing would be forthcoming, I do not think that deletion was appropriate even if someone legitimately thought the material did not add anything to the article. Also, these details have sources listed so I think they could not be deleted as erroneous. Because of the past history of vandalism by this IP address, however, I think that a good faith editing effort probably was not being made in this case. Thanks, again. I know that the cities were officially separate, but they functioned as one, and people could move pretty freely until the wall came up, so it's hard to in which sector people were born in prior to that - a family may have moved between 1949 and 1961, or have lived in Zehlendorf but the child be born in hospital in Köpenick, to give a hypothetical example. There is no need for an AfD. The article fails WP:GNG and the individual fails WP:MUSIC. Unless reliable sources can be found to establish individual notability independent of the band, then a redirect is entirely appropriate for this article. Tennis Borussia Berlin

The reason I reduced the League positions table on the Tennis Borussia Berlin is that it looks absolutly horrible when viewed on the small screen of a laptop as it is badly squashed. You may be editing on a wider screen and therefore not notice it. This goes for many similar tables on German football articles. 2009–10 UEFA Europa League qualifying phase and play-off round

Further to the thread I posted on the above at [6] and the changes you subsequently made to the article by adding "archive" to the url, I clicked on the home games of Spartak Trnava, Sligo Rovers and Buducnost in the 1st qual rnd, 1st leg, and in each case it says match report is not available. Too-speedy speedy tagging

Hi. Thank you for patrolling new pages, but a word of advice: it is a mistake to tag a new article with either A1 no context or A3 no content too soon after they are created - allow at least 10-15 minutes. New users often start (though they shouldn't) by just putting in a repetition of the title, or a few words, and then clicking "Save page" and pausing to admire the result and think what to do next. It is alarming and WP:BITEy if a speedy notice pops up immediately. There was an instance just now with MET Laboratories, Inc.: the author put in one word, 3 minutes later you tagged it A3, then he replaced everything with 1 kb + of article; in doing that he removed the speedy tag, so the SDPatrolBot promptly reverted him, he put it in again, the bot reverted him again, he gave up in despair and blanked it, the bot tagged it G7. Another newbie who thinks Wikipedia is unfriendly. In this case he has a copy in user space, so I hope he has not gone for ever. I will explain to him what happened and give him some advice; but, as I said, before tagging A1 and A3 best to give a newbie some time. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 21:55, 4 March 2011 (UTC)

You are right John, it was a bit bitey after only a few minutes. Quite similar to my own introduction to Wikipedia back in 2005. And yes, Wikipedia is very unfriendly to newbies; but I don't know if there is much to do about that other than to relax the rules even more so than they are at the moment. As proven in the "Brickalighter" post below, I'm not the best speedy tagger, but generally I get it right, and on NPP you do find the odd real gem or at the very least something salvageable from time to time. You posted a very friendly note on this user's talk page and I really appreciate your time given to explain what happened to me – and of course to him. Since the weekend I have been trying my best to be not so speedy in speedy tagging. Thank you for the barnstar on my talk page, and yes, you are welcome to ask advice any time. There is good advice for speedy taggers at WP:10CSD and WP:A7M. Some new pages need to be tagged quickly - attacks, for instance - and very often it's clear that a page is not going anywhere - "Tommy is in 5th grade and is cool" and the like. A1 and A3 in particular are the ones where people tend to be too quick on the trigger. If you see one that someone else has tagged too quickly, there is a useful template {{hasty}} to add.
As far as being less user-unfriendly goes, one useful step is to add {{welcome}} or {{firstarticle}} or {{welcome-spam}} before an initial speedy notice, so as to give some links to explain things. For an obvious NN autobiography, consider moving it to the user page (tagging the resulting redirect {{db-r2}}), and if that's not appropriate there is a template {{userfy}} which tells them about their user page while pointing out that WP is not Myspace. What I would like is some means of telling newbies before they set up an account about a few of the things that Wikipedia is not: I am unhappy that every morning I have to block three or four "User:XYZcompany" accounts who think that their user page is the place for a copy of their promotional website. Brickalighter

I can see why you tagged this as a hoax, but I don't think it quite fits that - a hoax implies intent to deceive, or at least should fail the test "could anybody possibly take this seriously?" but this guy has really made up his new word/philosophy/whatever and wants to tell the world about it. It fails WP:V and WP:OR, but it isn't speediable, so I have PRODded it. Just a friendly request. When you update templates like Template:NOFV-Oberliga Süd, could you make sure the template is attached to the clubs that play in the league in the current season and remove it from the promoted/relegated clubs? Metadata (WP:Persondata)

Hi! Jahn Regensburg is one of my interests (guess where I live) and I'm always glad to see a new article about a Jahn player.

Some time ago, I saw someone changing the names in WP:Persondata and had a look at the page. One example there uses ã: 

|ALTERNATIVE NAMES = Magalhães, Fernão de (Portuguese); Magallanes, Fernando de (Spanish)

As diacritics are not mentioned at all (neither in the positive or negative sense), I concluded that there is no reason not to use the names with diacritics. I don't think that there are technical problems, because the German Wikipedia uses them. --Jaellee (talk) 17:04, 8 August 2011 (UTC)

No worries. In fact, I only realised yesterday afternoon that the whole process can be done automatically with Twinkle. You just choose which criteria fits for the move and type the rationale, press submit, and the move gets listed on top of the category as well as at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Speedy. It was long overdue and a uniform naming convention will make it much easier should any new league articles be created. It was good to see that the move got good support from the people that took an interesst. There is a lot more articles that still require renaming but once the categories for them have been moved that becomes logical and won't be controversial anymore (I hope) and shouldn't need further discussions or move requests.
