Hi Insertcleverphrasehere, I appreciate the kind words. Sure I would love to help out. However, I have only been hesitant because I am on occasion a paid editor on Wikipedia. Of course, as you can see, I am already trusted with several flags (pending changes reviewer, pagemover, etc...) which give me privileges which I would never abuse in my paid editor capacity. If you feel that the community will not see my declared COIs as an issue, I would like the opportunity to help with the new pages backlog.  —አቤል ዳዊት?(Janweh64) (talk) 10:01, 23 November 2017 (UTC)
There is a relevant discussion on the Reviewer discussion board. The gist is that a condition of granting the flag is "The editor must review pages solely on a volunteer basis." If you are paid to edit certain articles/topics you cannot review articles as part of that paid editing, but can review other articles just fine. I personally don't see it as an issue, as you have clearly declared your paid editing on your user page. If you decide to request the user right at PERM I recommend declaring the paid editing and that you do not intend to review any articles as part of your paid editing activities. — Insertcleverphrasehere (or here) 10:09, 23 November 2017 (UTC)

Janweh64 this is really not a good time for you to apply there. Would you please consider withdrawing your request? The reason is that this is the one you gave above - the issue of paid editors having advanced permissions, especially related to any kind of page review, is very hot right now. We just community banned a paid editor who was abusing an advanced permission (see here), there is currently an RfC at VPP about preventing this via policy (here) and there is an arbcom case about to be accepted about paid editors having any kind of advanced permissions like this (see here). Yeah, I apologise for giving what turned out to be rather bad advice. I was unaware of the recent Arbcom case, and in line with the rules that we has chosen recently for NPP, I naively thought that we could assume good faith for editors that had pledged to keep their reviewing and paid editing privileges separate. I regret that you can't join us over there, as I personally think you would have been a great asset to the team, but this was supremely bad timing to be giving you that advice. Patrick Zhuwao

Thanks for your concern about Patrick Zhuwao. I haven't yet finished adding all of his career information. I added the 2016 incident because it was an isolated event whereas his career would require more time to draw out. @Jgefd: I will sit back and wait for improvements. I still believe that the section describing how he was removed from a parliamentary sessions is way too long. It could just as well been summarized in 2-3 sentences without quoteblocks. You are giving undue weight to a single negative incident that cannot be reasonably balanced with other content. Perhaps you plan to expand the article triple-fold. If so I could see how this could work. Otherwise, I don't see how you plan to maintain NPOV.

@Jgefd: Much better but you still don't need a separate section for controversies. Doing that is discouraged because you are highlighting negatives unfairly. Its like saying "Hey! Hey! Read this dirty bit!" to the reader.
Also his banishment from the EU requires a secondary source to establish that this is a notable fact about him. You should not be looking for legal documents and citing them as direct sources. @MonsterHunter32: The source is not the problem. The problem is that your words are almost a word for word copy of what the sources says. This is a violation of Wikipedia policies on copyrighted material. This is an easy problem to solve. Simply rewrite the sentence in a different way using your own words.
The biggest problem is the part that says "...added that he used the term in its demographic sense in reference to a broader spectrum of young people across political persuasions and gender and not a faction." "Military history" is one of the most important subjects when speak of sum of all human knowledge. To support contributors interested in the area over various language Wikipedias, we intend to form a user group. Jane Stanton Hitchcock

Hello! Great article, great subject. I just wanted to let you know that I took out the paragraphs about her stepfather because they were so lengthy -- I would have condensed it but I couldn't figure out the basic narrative. @JSFarman: Thank you so much for the kind words. As to that section you removed, actually it was more to do with her and Kenneth I. Starr than it does with her step-father. Starr embezzled a lot of celebrities including Hitchcock's family. After the death of her step-father and later her mother (one of his biggest victims), Jane Hitchcock was instrumental in bringing down his embezzlement scheme. It is a very important part of Jane's personal life. In fact, this story including interviews with Jane Stanton Hitchcock was the subject of an episode of American Greed, Season 6 Episode 1: "Naked Greed: Celebrity Scam Artist". I don't know if you noticed but I have a declared conflict of interest (paid) with this article. I would like to minimize the amount I directly edit the page now that it is published. I would appreciated if you took a second look and possibly restored the content even if in a truncated form. At the time of his death in 1987, Hitchcock's step-father, Arthur Stanton, had left his wife and Hitchcock's mother Joan Alexander Stanton, an inheritance estimated at about $70–80 million.[1][2] The estate was to be overseen by Kenneth Ira Starr[3] who the Stanton's had met through their daughter.[1][4] Starr, on Joan Stanton's behalf, eventually began making investments in a number of questionable ventures in which he had a personal vested interest, many of which resulted in a loss.[3] Sometime after 2006, Hitchcock and her mother became suspicious of Starr's dealings. A family friend, Jim Fennell, had discovered a scheme to use their East Hampton home as collateral to obtain a $5 million line of credit under the premise that the funds would be used to make more investments. Instead, Starr had been using Stanton's money to fund his lavish lifestyle.[3][4] When Hitchcock learned of this, she convinced her mother to seek legal assistance and brought the case to the attention of the New York County District Attorney. Her mother sued Starr in April 2008[3][4] but she died in May 2009.[5] Hitchcock settled the lawsuit under undisclosed terms but continued to assist in the ensuing criminal investigation. Starr was charge in criminal court for defrauding several celebrity figures.[3][6] He pleaded guilty[1] in September 2010 and he was sentenced to seven and half years in federal prison in March 2011.[7][8] In January 2012, the fraud case was featured in an episode in the sixth season of American Greed which included interviews with Hitchcock detailing how she pursued Starr until his conviction was secured.[4]

April 2018 Milhist Backlog Drive

G'day all, please be advised that throughout April 2018 the Military history Wikiproject is running its annual backlog elimination drive. This will focus on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • adding or improving listed resources on Milhist's task force pages
  • updating the open tasks template on Milhist's task force pages
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the scope of military history will be considered eligible. This year, the Military history project would like to extend a specific welcome to members of Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red, and we would like to encourage all participants to consider working on helping to improve our coverage of women in the military. This is not the sole focus of the edit-a-thon, though, and there are aspects that hopefully will appeal to pretty much everyone.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 April and runs until 23:59 UTC on 30 April 2018. Those interested in participating can sign up here.

Wikiproject Military history coordinator election nominations open

Nominations for the upcoming project coordinator election are now open. A team of up to ten coordinators will be elected for the next year. The project coordinators are the designated points of contact for issues concerning the project, and are responsible for maintaining our internal structure and processes. AfroCine: Join us for the Months of African Cinema in October!

The AfroCine Project welcomes you to October, the first out of the two months which has been dedicated to improving contents that centre around the cinema of Africa, the Caribbean, and the diaspora.

This is a global online edit-a-thon, which is happening in at least 5 language editions of Wikipedia, including the English Wikipedia! ArbCom 2018 election voter message

Hello, Janweh64. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
