Good work on Judith Newman[edit] Thanks for all your work on Judith Newman. Now it reads like an encyclopedia article rather than a press release. Don't apologize for all the edits; you systematically found references. I wish more articles I reviewed would get followed up on and fixed. StarryGrandma (talk) 06:15, 9 January 2014 (UTC) Thanks, StarryGrandma (talk), I appreciate it! I felt like we Wikipedians needed to rally! (In case you didn't see it -- Wikipedia, What Does Judith Newman Have to Do to Get A Page? - I love that the Wiki article will already exist when the print edition of this story runs tomorrow!) Julie Please allow me to add my own +1 to what @StarryGrandma: said above. Good job. Philippe Beaudette, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 08:09, 9 January 2014 (UTC) Philippe Beaudette, Wikimedia Foundation (talk), Thanks so much! And - as it should be - a bunch of editors have jumped in and made the article stronger than it was. NYT hasn't run an update yet, but I'm sure they will soon - psyched to see what it will say. JSFarman (talk) 15:22, 9 January 2014 (UTC) Thanks for your message on my page. Moncrief did the hard work. I just added some odds and ends. But it's obvious that Newman is notable, so I was happy to contribute. BTW, I thought that Newman's article in the NYT was poorly researched, particularly with regard to her statements about paid editors - she obviously did not talk to any really experienced editors here, or they could have explained to her why paid editing is a very bad idea. And, I find it very annoying that journalists like Newman, who have some understanding of our editorial process, and who use Wikipedia constantly, think it's fun to criticize us so broadly, when we get so much right and are putting together one of the greatest free resources in the world. I guess it wouldn't be much fun to write an article saying "Wikipedia is really great, and if you find a mistake, you can point it out, giving a citation to a reliable source, and let editors here fix it." -- Ssilvers (talk) 22:06, 10 January 2014 (UTC) Ssilvers (talk) Major props to you! You had strong feelings about Judith's article, but put everything aside and, with a commitment to neutrality, made the article better. (There's a follow-up running in the NYT soon, and I have no doubt that Judith's been educated about how incredible Wikipedia editors can be.) JSFarman (talk) 00:29, 11 January 2014 (UTC) Oh, good. Well, let's see what it says. I still think that Newman ought to read WP:COI regarding paid editing, or even take a look at the wonderful book: Wikipedia – The Missing Manual. -- Ssilvers (talk) 01:15, 11 January 2014 (UTC) Greg Kurstin[edit] Hey JSFarman, I've just added the songs you requested on the Greg Kurstin production discography page. Please help.. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jawillia (talk • contribs) 19:10, 24 April 2014 (UTC) Hi Jawillia (talk), I know how you feel -- I've had a few articles repeatedly declined. Try not to be discouraged -- you have done a good job. Creating an article can be difficult, and sometimes it's just a matter of editing, persevering, and editing some more. I'm glad that I've been of some help The problem with the article remains the tone. Try including the band members in one paragraph, and don't include more than a sentence about each of them, and reduce the sentence to relevant points only. When you list the events, consider including only the two most prestigious -- Carnegie Hall and the Tree Lighting Ceremony -- as otherwise it seems like a laundry list of accomplishments. The overall issue is that the article sometimes reads like a press release. Even though it's not your intention, in places the article is written in a promotional style, i.e.: "Having once been laughed at in his audition for the music department at the University of Central Florida, Fernando Varela has now performed in 31 countries across the globe." It may be a fact, but it's got a point of view, and we need to be neutral. Can you go back through the article and rewrite it with your focus strictly on maintaining a straightforward, unbiased perspective? I'm happy to give it another look (and another edit if it's necessary). Thanks for your diligence, and thanks for getting in touch. Nice to (sort of) meet you. The problem with the article is that his notability needs to be demonstrated through reliable, independent sources that cover David and his career extensively. They can't be in any way related to David. Can you find articles about him in newspapers, journals, magazines, or books? They don't have to be in English - other languages are allowed. The formatting of the article also needs some work, and I'll be glad to help you with that, but we need to get over the notability hurdle first. Ping me when you've had a chance to add sources! Thanks, JSFarman (talk) 04:46, 14 May 2014 (UTC) Dear Julie, Please accept my apologies, I had no idea from the pseudo that you were a lovely lady. Very sorry about this. I've added new sources on the article, they're from reliable sources such as broadwayworld, theatremania, jerusalem post, imdb..etc. Could you please let me know if these are ok? Thanks in advance for your kindness. Didier — Preceding unsigned comment added by 62.218.20.250 (talk) 22:15, 14 May 2014 (UTC) Hey again, VerneuilDidier (talk). I think you're still short on notability - the articles are great, but the coverage needs to be more extensive, and IMDb isn't considered a reliable source. BUT - I was looking at David's French article, and there are a lot of citations/sources. I'm not a French speaker, so it's difficult for me to tell for sure -- but will you go through them and see if they provide more than a couple of paragraphs about David, and that they're from reliable, independent sources? If we can add two or three, we should be good. And no apology necessary re: my gender...most of the editors here are male. Happens all the time! Thanks! Julie Dear Julie Thanks for your message. I've worked very hard today! You'll be very proud of me! I've added some sources from reliable sources and I believe, made a good article. Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks for your kind help. The referencing looks much better. Now we just need to do some work on the format. (I started on it, but I'm out of time again.) I'm not wild about the way the article unfolds - the date followed by the accomplishment. Perhaps it can be better expressed as a chart, or in prose? Also, consider highlighting only the most significant, as otherwise it may appear to be a laundry list of his accomplishments. I'll do some more when I get a chance, but you may not need my help...clearly you know what you're doing. Carry on! I just tried to do some clean up on the article, but I'm afraid that I don't know Opera well enough to do it competently. Unless every performance you reference is noteworthy, I would suggest you pick out the most significant to list specifically, and summarize the rest. ("He performed in (country)(country) and (country), and sang roles including (name) (name) and (name)". You're looking to include information that's encyclopedic, so, also -- find the specific locations where the performances were - writing France is too general. So is Florida. No need to break out his career by year - you should be able to cover it in a couple of paragraphs. JSFarman (talk) 01:59, 1 June 2014 (UTC) Much better than it was, though...excellent work! Hello beautiful Julie! Thanks for your encouragements! I've changed as requested the break out for the career by year and I specified the in france with Bordeaux and even added a reference from a magazine and did the same for the Florida one. From what I read from his website he performed much more operas and roles but I've listed just the noteworthy ones. Would it be possible to publish this article? We'll open up the champagne! The two that you've used aren't independent - one is a press release, and the other is Gary's site. In order to establish notability, you need to show that Gary's been written about extensively by independent, reliable sources. WP:N. Also, since you're writing so much about his life, you need to use inline citations so that the content can be verified. This is particularly important when you're writing about a living person. See WP:VERIFY. Also, please take a look at Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons. I'm familiar with Gary, and there's a lot about him online. I wanted to confirm a little bit more about my rejected page. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Articles_for_creation/April_Rose With regard to notability, you had mentioned independent sources. Should I try to find interviews or mentions of April by sources outside of MTV/Viacom? Also, I hadn't meant for the captioned photo to be a reference but rather, to act as the photo for the right side of the article. I wasn't sure if there was a proper formatting method you could recommend. I was going to try and use this article as a template and try to match sources in the same style. Do you think this is a good article to reference to aid in helping me get my article approved? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melanie_Iglesias Any help you can provide would be appreciated. I know you are busy and I know that Wikipedia is severely backed up. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.239.108.56 (talk) 19:51, 15 May 2014 (UTC) Hi 71.239.108.56 (talk), The press is really important here, because April doesn't meet the criteria for notability per WP:ENTERTAINER: Has had significant roles in multiple notable films, television shows, stage performances, or other productions. Has a large fan base or a significant "cult" following. Has made unique, prolific or innovative contributions to a field of entertainment But..."A person is presumed to be notable if he or she has received significant coverage in multiple published[3] secondary sources which are reliable, intellectually independent of each other,[4] and independent of the subject." You wrote that she's on the cover of the first Canadian Maxim; can you link to that article? (If it was just a cover shot, it's not helpful.) MTV and Viacom aren't independent, since they're writing about a show that airs on their own network. The coverage needs to be extensive, so mentions aren't helpful. Can you do deeper searches and see what else you can find? Feature stories? The format for Melanie Iglesias is fine, but the referencing on her article is pretty weak! To include a photo, you need to be a registered user. If you create an account, you can upload a photo. (It's a bit more complicated than that -- you need a release -- but the upload wizard can walk you through the process. Happy to help, and good luck! Julie JSFarman (talk) 04:45, 16 May 2014 (UTC) Hello Julie, Here are my revisions to the page. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_creation/April_Rose#Biography I was wondering if you could take a look at them and let me know if everything is okay? I appreciate your help and look forward to hearing from you soon! Hi again 71.239.108.56 (talk), The references still don't establish her notability. They need to provide in-depth coverage, and the only reference that does is the (shocking/horrible) story from the Mail. It may just be too soon. Then again, another reviewer might take a look at it and feel differently - it's been known to happen! Sorry...I wish I could tell you the references were sufficient! Julie Yes check.svg Done The Marshmallow Overcoat[edit] Dear JSFarman, I writing you in regards to an article I have been trying to add to WikiPedia for some time now. The article is about a band named "The Marshmallow Overcoat." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Articles_for_creation/The_Marshmallow_Overcoat I purchased one of the CDs at local record store and wanted to learn more about them. I tried WikiPedia and found numerous references to the band on entries for "Barry Sutton," "The Chesterfield Kings," "The Sound Explosion," "Walkingseeds," "A Psychedelic Psauna," and "The La's." Yet there was no entry for the band themselves. So I created the article and it was reject as advertising and having plagerized content. So I rewrote the article trying to mirror the style used for other bands of the same genre. I even contacted the bands record label, Purple Cactus/Garage Nation, to see about adding a release to their pages to allow for WikiPedia usage rights and I was surprised that they did. They even had the founder of the band, Tim Gassen, contact me and he provided me with some press material - it even turned out that he wrote a reference book about these bands called "The Knights of Fuzz" and he graciously sent me a digital copy of the book to help me in my seemingly futile quest. Would it help if the article was renamed from the proper "The Marshmallow Overcoat" to the casual "Marshamallow Overcoat?" The articles I mentioned above all list the band as just "Marshmallow Overcoat." Thank you for your assistance, Fred — Preceding unsigned comment added by Fred Kurtzweg (talk • contribs) 02:31, 16 May 2014 (UTC) Hi Fred (talk), The article's really good. Thorough, informative, neutral, well written. The problem is that notability hasn't been established -- you need multiple independent sources that cover Marshmallow Overcoat extensively. I think if you do some more digging you'll find them. Since the band was active in the late 80s, some of the press might not be available online. Maybe ask Tim or someone at the label if they have the press archives anywhere? References don't have to be available online -- you just need the publication name, the article title, the author, the date, (and the page number, if it's available). If the band's name was Marshmallow Overcoat, you should use that as the title of the article. (Always sounds weird to me when bands don't use "the." But since we're going for accuracy here, Marshmallow Overcoat it is.) Hope I've been of some help. Happy editing, and thanks for working on the article. Julie JSFarman (talk) 04:27, 18 May 2014 (UTC) Dear Julie, I made a change today to The Marshmallow Overcoat entry. I restructured some text and added quite a few reliable, independent sources as you had previously suggested. I am sorry for the delay, but editing this frustrated me so badly that I was tempted to chuck it all. I have never had such a frustrating experience in my life. I found I couldn't even listen to their music for the past month and a half. But I was determined to do this, so I dug in and gathered the material requested. When you have a chance, could you please re-review? Thank you so much for your patience, Fred Fred Kurtzweg (talk) 23:25, 15 July 2014 (UTC) Hello again. Glad you're back, Fred (talk). Great research - great digging. Notability = established! The formatting needs a bit of work -- instead of just tacking on the links at the end, they should be integrated into the body of the article. (Does that make sense?) I started doing an edit, but I'm out of time for the night. Let's both work on it and get it published. Thanks so much for your efforts! Julie JSFarman (talk) 05:29, 20 July 2014 (UTC) Dear Julie, Thank you again for your constructive input. Links have now been integrated into the body of the article as you requested. Can you look at the article as it currently stands and make sure it's accurate? I did a brief edit and I'm not entirely sure that I have my facts straight. Thanks, Julie JSFarman (talk) 04:21, 17 June 2014 (UTC) (PS - it was me that left the comment about the article being solid, not Zach, but I haven't gone through all the references yet.) Hi @JSFarman. Julie, I greatly appreciate your response and feedback. I will check the submission again. Quick question about the references...one of the editors mentioned something about using the same reference twice...is this permitted? This entire process has been very confusing and I want to make this submission perfect so you can approve it!! That being said, I want you to be completely sure of the facts and have no questions--anything stick out as a question mark to you? I'm sorry I thanked Zach for the comment about being solid..THANK YOU! Looking forward to your response. AllenAdcprny2 (talk) 13:08, 17 June 2014 (UTC) Hi again Adcprny2 (talk), No need to thank me -- I'm just concerned that we confused you. And yes, it's ok to use the same reference twice, but it should be formatted so that rather than the reference appearing twice, it's noted that it's used multiple times with a,b,c, etc. I'm not confident that accepting the article would be appropriate -- it's outside my area of expertise --- and having an article deleted is more of a drag than having it declined! I'm going to try and get another reviewer to look at it post haste. Thanks for your patience. I've taken a first stab at adding release information, fixing links, and combining the declined article with another one for the same band (which got speedily deleted a couple times because it didn't establish notability). Please let me know if there's anything else that should be done to get this article ready for prime time. Raffishtenant (talk) 09:18, 11 July 2014 (UTC) Hi Raffishtenant (talk). Nice job given that you're a new editor...any chance you were coached by Lisa Chin (talk)? Um. You seem to have a similar style. Not that it matters -- she's a good editor, as are you. The criteria states that appearing on a national chart indicates the subject may be notable. I don't necessarily think that's true in this case, given that Columbia has a very effective promotion department, and a lot of artists (notable or not) end up on the alternative/Sirius charts. However, there's more press than what you initially included -- can you add a couple more references? For example, this one works: I Know It's Not Cool, But It Helps To Establish Notability. I'm removing Postal Service from the info box - Magic Man don't appear to be associated with the band. They're just compared to them. (Another editing tic ala Lisa Chin! Smiley face.) To me, "associated" indicates a significant relationship -- if you can reference that they've worked together, etc., feel free to add it back. Anyway...add some references, ping me, and I'll accept the article. Thanks for your contribution! Julie JSFarman (talk) 16:32, 11 July 2014 (UTC) Thanks, Julie! I appreciate the notability clarification and suggestions. I haven't met Lisa yet, but yep: she put together one of the two declined articles which fed into this one (including the Postal Service link). I've added a few more press references as requested. (Ha, wouldn't have guessed that my first editing foray would feature a link to Glamour!) Right now the press links feel a bit "tacked on" to me, but they don't seem extensive enough to merit their own section. I figure this can be addressed if and when the band starts to receive more coverage...? Thanks again and please let me know if you have any other suggestions. Ethan Raffishtenant (talk) 22:48, 11 July 2014 (UTC) Heya Ethan (talk), Accepted and published. My only suggestion would be that you write more articles - there are so many bands that meet the criteria for notability and aren't yet on Wikipedia. I can offer some ideas if you're interested. Heh. Nice job! Thanks. Julie JSFarman (talk) 04:52, 12 July 2014 (UTC) Sweet! Thanks for the publish, Julie. I'm certainly interested in working on similar pages as time permits, so I appreciate the offer...bring on the band names. One question: it looks as though you combined three of my original paragraphs into one fairly long one. I have to say that encountering that much stuff in one paragraph (especially when almost every sentence has a citation) makes me zone out as a reader. Is there a guideline that addresses this? If not, would you mind if I broke that sucker back down into at least two paragraphs? Thanks. Ethan Raffishtenant (talk) 08:15, 12 July 2014 (UTC) Names to come, Ethan (talk). Sometimes the articles lose paragraph breaks in the move to the main space - it wasn't intentional! Please fix it - you can edit it (as can anyone) at anytime. Thanks again. Dear Julie, I made a change yesterday to The Marshmallow Overcoat entry, at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Articles_for_creation/The_Marshmallow_Overcoat . Thanks for contributing to the backlog elimination drive! Posted by (t) Josve05a (c) on 23:17, 31 July 2014 (UTC), on behalf of WikiProject Articles for creation. Some sketchy stuff happened..[edit] Hey JSFarman, So I'm new to wikipedia and I want to write an article about Mark Macias (I am not him but I know him personally). I originally submitted a draft about his firm MaciasPR but upon reading your feedback I realized his firm isn't notable enough but HE is (btw thanks for that clarification). So I typed 'Mark Macias' into wiki, it said an article doesn't currently exist for him, so I clicked I wanted to write one, I wrote it, submitted, and it went up instantly without undergoing any review. Isn't there something wrong with that? I thought it needs to be reviewed before it goes up? And right after this happened I got a message saying my account is nominated for deletion. I'm clearly a novice in the wiki world so maybe I did something wrong unintentionally, but I then submitted a draft for the same article (Mark Macias) that was actually submitted to be reviewed. Can we take down the unreviewed page somehow? How does the unreviewed article vs. submitted draft thing work out? Thanks so much for the time JSFarman. 212access (talk) 19:34, 4 August 2014 (UTC) Dan @212access: (talk page stalker) First, do not blank other editors' talk pages. In fact, you should not remove your own comments after you make them. The Articles for Creation WikiProject is meant to be used by IPs (unregistered accounts) and new users to draft articles. After four days and several edits, you can make an article like Mark Macias on your own without approval. There's nothing wrong with that. Accordingly, I've declined Draft:Mark Macias because it's now superfluous. You can nominate that draft for speedy deletion or simply abandon it. Be advised, the reviewers at WikiProject AfC help new editors so that drafts stand better than a 50/50 chance in case someone nominates it for deletion. Your new article exists but it could be nominated for deletion so I recommend you continue to improve it, especially by adding more independent and reliable sources so you can make a case for general notability. Chris Troutman (talk) 19:54, 4 August 2014 (UTC) Hey 212access (talk) and Hello (talk page stalker)Chris Troutman, Not sure what happened here, but I wanted to tell you that I did the same thing when I started working on my first article. I searched the subject, didn't find him Bryan Kest, wrote the article based on the prompts, and published it, thinking I was submitting a draft. I panicked until I realized that the article was neutral and properly sourced and wasn't going to get deleted. It probably happens a lot. That said, you should do some more work on the Mark Macias article, as Chris suggested -- the references are weak. The only one that's valid is from KPHO, and you need multiple references to establish notability - I don't think the article would survive a deletion nomination as it currently stands. Happy editing and hit me back if you need any help. Julie JSFarman (talk) 22:42, 4 August 2014 (UTC) Luke Juby wiki entry refusal[edit] Hiya - am really looking for help with this. I thought all was verifiable. Can you give me a clue which part of the content you are having problems with, please. Is it acceptable to refer to other verified Wiki entries, which I have done in several places? I'd be extremely grateful for any help or guidance you could give me. Best wishes, Liz Emac494 (talk) 11:26, 8 August 2014 (UTC) Hi Liz Emac494 (talk), This issue with the article isn't the verification, it's the notability. Here's the criteria for musicians: WP:NMUSIC. If he doesn't meet the criteria, you can establish notability via multiple, non-trivial, published works appearing in sources that are reliable, not self-published, and are independent from the musician or ensemble itself. I did a search and didn't find much. Has he written songs that have charted on mainstream charts? That might be enough. And - believe it or not - Wikipedia isn't considered a reliable source. That cracks me up, but I get it - ! Happy editing and let me know if I can help further. Julie JSFarman (talk) 20:31, 8 August 2014 (UTC) Entry for Luke Juby[edit] Hi Julie Thank you so much for your help. I've got the sleeve notes of 3 albums which were hits here in the Uk but I can't find any copy of them on the web. He wrote or co-wrote these tracks among others: Emeli Sande Our Version of Events (Suitcase, Mountains, Lifetime) Leona Lewis Glassheart (When it Hurts) Naughty Boy Hotel Cabana (Think about IT, One Way and Pluto) Professor Green At Your Inconveience (Avalon) I'm not sure if it would be possible to find these, but I could photo the credits and send them, if that would be helpful. They also appear on the All Music web-site http://www.allmusic.com/artist/luke-juby-mn0002446830 but I'm not sure if that is acceptable. Thank you for your time and advice, Liz 5.68.237.140 (talk) 15:17, 10 August 2014 (UTC) Hi again, Liz (talk) 5.68.237.140 (talk), Here's a link to his credits: Luke Juby at AllMusic It might not be complete, but usually AllMusic is pretty accurate. It's not a matter of demonstrating notability to me -- I just volunteer at AfC - I have the same authority on Wikipedia as you do. Notability needs to be apparent to readers, and that's done through references that appear as footnotes to the article. (If you decide to stick around and get some experience, Wikiproject AfC is a great way to contribute, and help is desperately needed.) I'd go through his credits and note which of his songs charted - between the verification at AllMusic and the charts (which are generally available) you may be able to establish notability based on this, from WP:NMUSIC: The following factors suggest that a song or single may be notable, though a standalone article should still satisfy the aforementioned criteria. Has been ranked on national or significant music or sales charts. Has won one or more significant awards or honors, such as a Grammy, Juno, Mercury, Choice or Grammis award. Has been independently released as a recording by several notable artists, bands, or groups. Thanks for your efforts, and thanks for the thanks! You should probably just remove them (although they can occasionally be used to verify information in an article). The reviews linked above definitely help, but (in my opinion only) we're not quite to notability yet. Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Jon Stokes[edit] Hello, I'm in the process of editing the article for Jon Stokes which you rejected on the grounds that the references were not adequate being not about him specifically, but about the organisations he is associated with. I just wondered what the difference is between this draft article and the one for https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jon_Billsberry ? They both work in the same field and I cannot see that Jon Billsberry's references meet your criteria either, and yet his article has been accepted... Is it the fact that he is better embedded into Wikipedia, being listed for example, as an alumni of a particular university? Many thanks and kind regards, Sophie — Preceding unsigned comment added by ZofiaJK (talk • contribs) 13:45, 2 September 2014 (UTC) Hi Sophie, (talk • contribs), I reviewed Jon Stokes article over a year ago - if I were reviewing it today I would have declined it for notability, not for sourcing. There are specific criteria for academics: WP:PROF. Jon Billsbury's article wasn't "accepted" - the author of the article (presumably Jon Billsbury based on user name) didn't go through the review process. He/she published the article him/herself. (It was in 2009.) I've tagged the article accordingly - notability hasn't been established, and the references are inadequate. That said, there are thousands (if not hundreds of thousands) of articles on Wikipedia that are subpar -- that they exist means only that no one has noticed and/or had the desire to improve them (or nominate them for deletion if they can't be brought up to standard). See WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS. If you're able to find more references, hit me back. Thanks for contributing! I've been getting feedback on my draft from Kudpung, who was involved in a prior speedy delete - please see our discussion and his review on his talk page. I was wondering if you would be also be willing to review my draft and comment on its suitability for moving to the mainspace. I believe that it satisfies WP:notability requirements - in particular including references to a significant number of in-depth articles, specifically about the subject, in independent sources, including national press (TIME Magazine) and prominent regional media (e.g. extensive coverage in the Boston Globe). My inclination is to move it to the mainspace in the next day or two, but please let me know what you think. As part of Wikipedia Loves Libraries and to celebrate Open Access Week, UC Riverside is participating alongside other Western Waters Digital Library members in an edit-a-thon focusing on water issues. Join students and faculty learning how to edit! This event will take place on Tuesday, October 21 from 10am to 3pm at UCR's Orbach Science Library (map). RSVPs are requested here. The Unforgetting L.A. edit-a-thon and training workshop will take place at the 9th annual Los Angeles Archives Bazaar, and is hosted by online magazine East of Borneo in partnership with L.A. as Subject. Join us on Saturday, October 25 from 9am to 5pm at the USC Doheny Memorial Library (map). Beginners welcome! Please RSVP here if you plan to attend. I hope to see you there! I have been writing this now for several months and you declined because one of the articles link is broken, so if I delete that since we have a plethora more? will that suffice. thanks. TimothyTimedborg 18:10, 17 October 2014 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Timedborg (talk • contribs) OK, I fixed the post journal links and added a bunch of solid articles in and including Getty image and wireimage reference. I suspect you know the solid of being up on wireimage and getty images? Timedborg 18:55, 17 October 2014 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Timedborg (talk • contribs) Hi Timedborg (talk), I wish I could be of more help, but I'm still not seeing enough coverage to establish that Brielle meets the criteria required. WireImage and Getty ARE great, but they're only photos, and don't provide the extensive coverage that we need. (Yes, I'm familiar with both services.) I did an extensive search, and didn't find any appropriate citations. Another reviewer might find the Post Journal links sufficient, in combination with the other references used, but I think the article on Brielle as it stands right now would be susceptible to deletion. Feel free to resubmit it, although you may be better served by waiting until there's more press. Sorry! Our gig as reviewers is to help editors draft articles that will stick, and I'm afraid this wouldn't. Thanks, Julie JSFarman (talk) 01:35, 18 October 2014 (UTC) Hi Julie: I just don't get it, I see other entertainers and artists with wiki pages that have as many notable references as Brielle. With that said. I did add 3 more solid press refs like All Access like you had suggested including the Getty/WireImage that you said is not really that notable. I guess I don't get the purpose of wiki. I am not trying to promote her (we have plenty of social systems, radio, video, PR, and media already doing that), I am just trying to be as factual as possible on a growing pop cultural figure that I suspect the public wants to know factual notable information about. Timothy Timedborg 12:45, 18 October 2014 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Timedborg (talk • contribs) Hey again Tim (talk) and sorry for the delay. I've been off Wiki since last week. There's specific criteria regarding the inclusion of musicians in Wikipedia - see WP:NMUSIC. Valid references need to be independent, from reliable sources, and provide extensive coverage. Specifically, I declined the article because of the following issues with the references. (Please note that 2-3 brief and fluffy paragraphs don't validate notability.) 1. Federal registration doesn't establish notability 2. Post Journal - valid, but local (same article used three times) - Jamestown has a population of 30,000. 3. High school record - not extensive, and doesn't support that she's an entertainer or musician. 4/5: See above re Post Journal 6. Not extensive coverage, and this award doesn't establish notability 7/8/9: The video's inclusion on a music video site doesn't establish notability; virtually every music video site endeavors to include all available videos 10/11: Written by Danielle; not independent 12. Mention only 13. Video post; editorial coverage is trivial 14. Valid 15. Trivial coverage via questionable source 16. Not extensive coverage 17. Interview, not considered independent, trivial editorial coverage 18. Not extensive coverage 19. Not extensive coverage 20/21: Getty references are simply photos. They don't provide extensive coverage, and Brielle's inclusion doesn't establish notability. Getty's business is selling photos -- the images aren't curated and don't involve any kind of editorial process. (The more photographs they have available, the more profitable they are.) 22: Music Now appears to be part of Rocklan One, which looks like paid placement/marketing. Further, I'm only seeing a photograph (which may or may not be a cover). I'm not inclined to give this the benefit of the doubt, given that I've worked in music for a looooooong time and I've never heard of this publication.
Request on 14:23:17, 20 October 2014 for assistance on AfC submission by Meganq92[edit] Meganq92 (talk · contribs) User:Meganq92 (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) I am just wondering why the article wasnt accepted, so I can fix it, also im not sure why it says CAVS ( musical group) its not a musical group it is an audio visual sompany, the first audio visual company in ireland and the first proper company to tour the UK and ireland. There are many other audio visual companies with a wikipedia page and I am wondering what I can do to ensure CAVS gets one too as it is rightly deserved.
Meganq92 (talk) 14:23, 20 October 2014 (UTC) Hi Meganq92 (talk), It looks like "Musical Group" was added to the draft title accidentally by another editor - I'll change it back. CAVS may well be notable, but you need to demonstrate it with proper references! See WP:NCORP. (The existence of similar articles isn't relevant - there are a lot of articles on Wikipedia that probably shouldn't be here.) Also, the tone of the article needs work - it needs to be completely neutral and encyclopedic! No personality, basically..."worthy but boring." In addition, the facts that you include should be cited so the information is verifiable. See WP:CITE. Hope that helps. Cool article, cool story! Cpg819 (talk) 18:04, 20 October 2014 (UTC) Hello Cpg819 (talk), You need to add references and citations for the information included in the article. See WP:CITE. Right now most of what you've written isn't verifiable -- the assertions of the article (biographical info, etc) needs to be supported by independent references. Rob Burger's site isn't independent, and saying that the credits were collected from AllMusic isn't nough to cover everything that you've written. Also, see WP:NMUSIC for specifics re: notability. Let me know if you have more questions, otherwise ping me after the cites have been added. Thanks! But you need to rewrite it so that it's easier to understand, formal in tone, neutral, and referenced (to establish notability and support the assertions of the article). For example, your lead as it currently stands is: "CAVS has not been an overnight success but was actually conceived way back at the end of the 60s by its creator Fran Quigley. So this company would have the longest standing roots of all within the Audio Visual industry now into its 5th decade." To be appropriate for Wikipedia, it should say something more like: "Corporate Audio Visual Services (CAVS) is an audio visual company based in Dublin, Ireland. One of the first companies of its kind, CAVS was founded in (year) by Fran Quigley." Then you need to add a reference which will show why CAVS should be in an encyclopedia, and verify that it was one of the first AV companies. Please take some time with writing a better draft. It'll help you with the construction of the article. But you may first want to look for references -- the article won't be published unless you can establish notability, which can be a challenge. See WP:CORP for the specifics. Let me know if you have more questions after you've read the above. Best, Julie Copyright checks when performing AfC reviews[edit] Hello JSFarman. This message is part of a mass mailing to people who appear active in reviewing articles for creation submissions. First of all, thank you for taking part in this important work! I'm sorry this message is a form letter – it really was the only way I could think of to covey the issue economically. Of course, this also means that I have not looked to see whether the matter is applicable to you in particular. The issue is in rather large numbers of copyright violations ("copyvios") making their way through AfC reviews without being detected (even when easy to check, and even when hallmarks of copyvios in the text that should have invited a check, were glaring). A second issue is the correct method of dealing with them when discovered. If you don't do so already, I'd like to ask for your to help with this problem by taking on the practice of performing a copyvio check as the first step in any AfC review. The most basic method is to simply copy a unique but small portion of text from the draft body and run it through a search engine in quotation marks. Trying this from two different paragraphs is recommended. (If you have any question about whether the text was copied from the draft, rather than the other way around (a "backwards copyvio"), the Wayback Machine is very useful for sussing that out.) If you do find a copyright violation, please do not decline the draft on that basis. Copyright violations need to be dealt with immediately as they may harm those whose content is being used and expose Wikipedia to potential legal liability. If the draft is substantially a copyvio, and there's no non-infringing version to revert to, please mark the page for speedy deletion right away using {{db-g12|url=URL of source}}. If there is an assertion of permission, please replace the draft article's content with {{Nobots}} {{Copyviocore |url=URL of source |month = February |day = 11 |year = 2016 |time = 21:05 |timestamp = 20160211210528}} . Some of the more obvious indicia of a copyvio are use of the first person ("we/our/us..."), phrases like "this site", or apparent artifacts of content written for somewhere else ("top", "go to top", "next page", "click here", use of smartquotes, etc.); inappropriate tone of voice, such as an overly informal tone or a very slanted marketing voice with weasel words; including intellectual property symbols (™,®); and blocks of text being added all at once in a finished form with no misspellings or other errors. I hope this message finds you well and thanks again you for your efforts in this area. Best regards--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 02:20, 18 November 2014 (UTC). WP:PROF[edit] I just wanted to remind you about the criterion in WP:PROF, that anyone who holds a named professorship at a major college or university is notable. It's a quick screen when it applies. (Of course, many such articles are promotional or copyvio, but that's another matter).I;ve just accepted one or two such that you had declined. BTW, magnificent work on entertainment articles. DGG ( talk ) 06:06, 22 January 2015 (UTC) Good morning DGG ( talk ) and thank you for the clarification. I frequently think about going to you for your opinion on articles that I review (or don't, because I'm uncertain), and then think that you're too busy to ask. It was great to wake up to your message - next time I'm perplexed, I'm just gonna go ahead and ask you. Thanks also for the props on the entertainment-related articles - as a former music publicist, that's an area that I actually understand. (I try to stick to entertainment unless the backlog is really heavy, which it seems like it is most of the time lately.) DGG ( talk ) 20:03, 22 January 2015 (UTC) Please re-review Camille Filfiley[edit] Hi JSFarman, thanks for your suggestions and review for Draft:Camille Filfiley. I edited the submission, and so I'm sending back to you as you asked. Just want to point out a couple of things: You wrote that Camille is not notable for her work as featured or background vocalist, but you also suggested that I could mention her background vocal work in the lead line (I did , but was just a little confused on that). Also, as you suggested, I removed all listings of compilation and re-issue albums from her discography, but with two exceptions: I thought that Deodato's Greatest Hits might be a notable mention, as well as the Stick It movie soundtrack, which even though is credited to "Various Artists" it's not really a compilation album. Also, in the bio section I mentioned a couple of notable compilation albums she is part of because that is one of the criteria for notability listed in WP:Music guideline. Last thing-- in the bio I make several mentions that Camille is credited by her single first name (as opposed to Camille Filfiley). I think this is important because there is a Wikipedia listing for a Camille (singer) who is French but became notable well after the Camille I'm writing about. Just trying to establish that Camille Filfiley should be listed with the title Camille (vocalist). Sorry if this is not the proper way to reply to your comment... I'm still a bit new at this. Anyway, I hope my article looks ok now. Thank you so much for your help! Could you check and fill in the refs? DGG ( talk ) 04:06, 24 January 2015 (UTC) DGG ( talk ) - The article hugely overstates his significance. I just did a quick search and couldn't find suitable references but I'll dig in more tomorrow and edit accordingly. JSFarman (talk) 06:55, 24 January 2015 (UTC) if you conclude not notable, just take it to afd. I expect a certain number of afc passes will go to afd, and some of them will fail to be accepted. DGG ( talk ) 11:01, 24 January 2015 (UTC) Hello again DGG ( talk ) - I just did a rewrite. Based on the refs I found, his notability is borderline, but given that coverage on him from the 70s is probably not available online I'm not inclined to take it to AfD. Thanks for asking me to check it out. I'd think it would have been deleted if refs hadn't been added, and I love that these jazz players are in Wikipedia. These are events...many from almost 40 years ago before the information age and youtube or computers. I have seen some articles on the Internet regarding some of the information..may the be referenced and used to certify? Also..I looked in the records on line for the songs that were composed or co written by this gentleman. ..may the copyright library be used to verify as well? Also if some info is removed will that help? This man is about 65 years old...and playing in some hotel and a restaurant...so he is not even in main stream music right now... his other band mates have articles that were published with much less information ... this man seems to have gotten lost in the credits..but has musical history..he's even worked briefly with Prince (saw vid on line)... which I think would be interesting to know for those who would even care...lol. Should I take out the kids and ex wife...is that dangerous to add... Ok sir..thank you again... respectfully, Poekneegurl (talk) 01:07, 27 January 2015 (UTC)poekneegurl Hi Poekneegurl (talk), First! I'm not a sir! My name is Julie. (Nice to meet you.) You can use any reliable source to verify information. Read WP:SOURCE for details, but in general, the source needs to have a reputation for fact-checking and accuracy. The material also has to have been published. If you've done interviews, and they've been published via reliable sources, they're valid. YouTube clips are generally not reliable sources - if it's from a valid source, it should appear on a site other than YouTube, with at least partial transcripts. (For example, CNN clips may appear on YouTube, but they live at CNN.com.) If it's online, and it's a valid source, you can use it to support the article! If you can't source your statements, you should remove them. There is a LOT going on in the article! You should simplify it - boil it down to the most significant points. Definitely take out any personal information. Don't even think about adding the Chaka Khan story! Let me know when you've had a chance to edit and I'll take another look. Ok...I will clean it up..I contacted the Felderstein guy on FB and he said he "washed his hands" of it...and do what I please...I will work on it and submit to you again and Julie..if you still feel it is not submission worthy..this next time...I will not waste my time any further... thank you for your quick response. ..much appreciated... appreciate your input... Getty Museum (3334818780).jpg Dear fellow Wikipedian, The LA Wikipedia community has three events in mid-February -- please consider attending! First, we have a Valentine's Day edit-a-thon appropriately named Redondo Loves Wikipedia, which will take place at the Redondo Beach Public Library from 10am to 1pm on Saturday, February 14. Join library staff, the Redondo Beach Historical Society, and others to help improve Wikipedia's coverage of Redondo Beach! Second, we have a Wik-Ed Women editing session on Tuesday, February 17 from 6pm to 10pm at the Los Angeles Contemporary Archive downtown. This series of informal get-togethers is designed to encourage Los Angeles women-in-the-arts (though all are welcome!) to contribute their expertise to Wikipedia, specifically expanding content about women artists. Third, we have an Unforgetting LA event put on by East of Borneo in collaboration with the Getty Research Institute. Come help improve Wikipedia's coverage of LA design and architecture, and have an awesome free day at the museum -- parking will be validated for edit-a-thon participants! If you'd like to use particular books from GRI's great collection, be sure to email before 2/13 (instructions at event page). And be sure to check out our main meetup page, because we already have three SoCal events scheduled for early March! I hope to see you there! Alex Smith (Entrepreneur) - Articles for Deletion[edit] Hello I am a part of a group in northern Indiana that meets quarterly in person and semi-monthly remotely to discuss and learn Wikipedia and contribute with a focus on Indiana events, persons, companies etc. We are always providing each other with tricks and tips for improving our knowledge base and improve our contributions. This article that I contributed to is being considered for deletion and I see that you and others voted for "Speedy Keep" as it does appear to be a bad faith nomination. My question is, what is the process now moving forward? Does the error message at the top of the article drop off of stay and what is the usual timeline for the voting process on whether or not a contribution should indeed be deleted or not? Liilbuck (talk) 16:40, 19 February 2015 (UTC) Hi Liilbuck (talk), So cool that you have a group! I'm sorry that the article was nominated for deletion, although it's definitely part of the whole Wikipedia experience. At least you're going through your first deletion AfD on an article that shouldn't have been nominated for deletion based on notability to being with. (I'm somewhat entertained that the nominator now has noted that he's been "working on drafts," apparently unaware that there's a history of every edit he's made, and previous to a couple this morning, his only edits were to nominate the article for deletion and to remove Alex Smith from the list of notable business people from Fort Wayne.) Anyway, important to know that deletion discussions are almost always based on consensus (not a vote), and are closed with a verdict by an administrator. I've seen AfD's closed by non-administrators when there unanimous based on the article has a snowball's chance in hell of being deleted, but I'm not sure exactly when that's appropriate. Anyway, there's no set timeline, but usually the discussions are closed fairly quickly when there's a clear consensus. When an administrator closes the discussion, he/she will remove the tag. Hope that helps, and sit tight. Julie Go Live Draft[edit] Dear JS Farman I am writing to you in relation to the comment which you have left while reviewing the article I submitted and which can be found at https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Draft:Go_Live&redirect=no . Your question was whether I wanted to write about an article about Sytecee/ “Say It Loud It's My News and I am Proud"? The answer is not really. The idea is to present go live feature. I googled the term and it really has many uses. It can be used for something that goes viral (which I tried to present in my article), for some undergoing process etc. I found the article on the Adobe Go Live. I read this article on Wikipedia and this kind of go live is not the go live I had in mind. I wanted to present the feature "go live" which is present in social media apps and platforms (You Tube, Whatsapp etc..) and which is used to upload and stream the video and audio content the moment it is being recorded. One of the editors from the live chat talk has read the article and advised me to stay away from software engines which are embedded into social media porgramming and which enable this feature. I used Wowza engine because their site offered the clearest explanation of the go live and streaming feature. Sytecee is just a mere example. Thank you for your time. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Flower244 (talk • contribs) 19:13, 14 May 2015 (UTC) Hello Flower244 (talk), and thanks for the response! This is my first article and have been working really hard at adjusting it as advised. I have removed the line you suggested. Resubmitting. Scottsdesk (talk) 15:12, 18 June 2015 (UTC) Hi Scottsdesk (talk), Thanks for making that change. But you need to go back through the article and delete all of the statements which aren't strictly factual and/or specific. For example, "Upon departing from Evil Beaver, Laura has been involved in many things." What are the many things she has been involved with? Do you have citations for them? "Since Laura's departure from the band Evie has used Evil Beaver as her own artistic vehicle" isn't clear - what does "her own artistic vehicle mean"? Perhaps you should write that Evil Beaver became a solo project after Laura left the band. Be clear, specific, and neutral, and include only what is relevant. (You need to go through the entire submission -- there are other statements in need of editing.) Take a look at the articles for other artists. It will be easier for you to write the article if you structure it chronologically. For example, look at Joan Jett or Liz Phair. (I'm suggesting those articles because of the format - they are both much more extensive than your article will be!!) Also check this out -- it will give you broad guidance. Thank you for reviewing my Draft:Dimitris Paraskevas!! I read your review comments and I cannot understand the reason why you rejected my article. In my opinion, it meets the criteria Wiki sets for a living person's biography, as Dimitris Paraskevas held an important position in Greece as a Secretary for Privatisations (especially given the recent events in Greece this position influenced the political scene quite a lot) and is also a well known international business lawyer, who has been interviewed by BBC, Financial Times etc. Is it possible that you re-review it? If not, could you kindly explain me specifically what my article lacks of, so that I can work it out? The previous reviewer (Sulfurboy) told me that the article would be good if I fixed a minor citations' problem, which I did, and I was quite suprised to see it declined once again. (See WP:RELIABLE.) I think you will be more successful if you narrow the scope of the article. Instead of saying he is an "entrepreneur, marketing professional, event promoter, talent manager, film producer and music producer" you can just say he's an entreprenuer, music and film producer. You can break down his career into those areas and the article will be much more manageable. BUT...you have to establish notability. Given his background I'd think that it can be done. Thanks for your perseverance. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Constance Congdon, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Guggenheim Foundation (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver).
