Nice photo of Crown Center

Thanks for the photo of Crown Center. That's one of the nicest I've ever seen. It also lined up with a couple buildings I've written articles on 2345 Grand and Hyatt Regency Crown Center. Your user page has been semi-protected. :) In addition, I note that you do a lot of vandal-fighting. Would you like me to grant your account rollback rights? Rollback is very useful for reverting vandalism and spam, but it should only be used to revert vandalism/spam, and misuse of the tool (either by reverting good-faith edits or using it to revert-war) can lead to its removal. Many thanks for removing the commercial external links from the Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin article. I kept removing them; some editors kept putting them back in. Hi there and thanks for the information regarding my updates. I am totally new to Wikipedia and working on the first lessons. I updated the page you commented on because it was orphaned. I added information regarding the Organization that was borned out of a US Goverment grant. Prior to this, there was no way to test the competency of the teachers in our public school systems. I want to be as objective as possible, so please provide me with suggestions to keep this from a (NPOV). I really want to do this right, so I'm open for help and suggestions. Why did you delete the addition of Gene Peterson as a Notable Native from Albert Lea, MN, on the Albert Lea page? Because he is not notable. Does he meet these criteria? [1] Does he have his own Wikipedia article? A footnote to an external page does not qualify.

Also, the link to Craig Dahl is a different person, so he is not notable, and a college wrestler is very non-notable.

Yes, Gene Peterson does meet the criteria you linked to. Under the category "Actors, comedians, opinion makers, models, and television personalities" you will find the criteria "Has had significant roles in multiple notable films, television, stage performances, or other productions." Gene Peterson has hosted over 2,000 Rockets basketball games, including the 12 NBA finals games, and was the play-by-play announcer for an NBA All-Star game. While he does not have his own Wikipedia page, this is not criteria alone for listing in a Notable Natives page. He has been profiled in many sources, including the Houston Chronicle, Houston Press, and mentions on ESPN, Sports Illustrated, and Wikipedia. Please let me know why you still feel this does not meet the criteria above.

Hi lulus,

I work for a company called BTL which specialises in e-assessment software(btl.com) and recently we have been trying to create a larger online presence through search engine optimization and such. We are a leading e-assessment software provider for some of the largest exam bodies in the UK.

Some of the people at our company have tried editing the e-assessment wiki page to include links to our companies website. We would like a mention on the e-assessment page just so that people looking for e-assessment solutions can find us.

We do not want to blatantly advertise, just have a link to our company website and perhaps some of our resources. Some of our PDF files at http://btl.com/resources.asp are directly related to the subject and could be considered a valuable resource in learning about e-assessment.

As you are a regular editor of the e-assessment page we would like to ask you on how we should go about putting a few links on the page without appearing to be advertising.

Neither of us would like to end up in an editing war so I am asking you to state what you would consider acceptable additions to the page. We also feel that the content on that page is rather lacking and we are considering writing some more for it from a neutral point of view.

Also going off topic looking at your wiki page, I see that you are interested in development and how geography relates to this. I am currently reading a book called Guns, Germs and Steel which has a lot to say on the subject of human development from a geographical point of view which would probably interest you. If you are interested in learning more about human development from a geographical point of view then I really recommend this book for you (can be bought off amazon for a few dollars).

Well, first of all, let me thank you for bringing this up for direct discussion and not just continuing to replace the link. The last time I was in this situation, rather than discuss it the other guy said he had hired a monkey to continuously replace his link; he was permanently blocked. Yes, that was actually his strategy!

I have two issues with placing that link on Wikipedia: that it does not meet Wikipedia policies and that (as you admit) the content on your page is lacking, non-scholarly, and advertisory.

First, about your page. The resources presented are overwhelmingly advertisory in nature. Even the Gomersall paper and the e-assessment white paper qualify. The cases studies and press releases are more than obvious. There are similar sites that are not listed here which have a much less advertisory tone and would be much more useful because of that (http://www.questionmark.com/us/whitepapers/index.aspx, http://www.act.org/research/reports/index.html, https://www.assess.com/research.php).

Second, there are the relevant Wikipedia policies. You are not supposed to promote your own stuff (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:NOTSOAPBOX#SOAPBOX) because it is a conflict of interest (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Conflict_of_interest), make it a collection of external links (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:LINKFARM#LINK), and you are definitely not supposed to place a link to promote a company or product (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Spam#External_link_spamming), which is the primary purpose.

I’d like to put a link to my own company on this page also, but have not because of these reasons. You might wish to post on Marspedia since it is allowed there (http://www.marspedia.org/index.php?title=Marspedia:About). I’m also considering starting a new site as a central resource for testing/assessment where we don't have to worry about these policies to make links.

Kiefer: thank you for your note, and for all your hard work, and for caring about the integrity of WP. I've stopped contributing simply due to the fact that WP would not enforce its own policies regarding all the self-promotion and sockpuppetry, so it's good to see that there is still some effort for that. I see that the Paradox page is finally up for deletion (as it should be, considering that no one has ever used the term other than Sawilowsky himself, so interesting that Edstat should try to implement), and that the user page for one of his sockpuppets (JMASM) has disappeared (it was another advertisement, though the copyvio image it uploaded is still around, conveniently ignored by VernoWhitney). If you're discussing content, don't forget to look in the History of a page for interesting additions by IPs, that's his MO as much as Trolling. I support you in all your efforts. Dear Iulus, I am sorry for failing to reply earlier. My personal life has been greatly enriched this semester! :)
I have not minded self-promotion for minor (but apparently notable) academics, because nobody reads them. I would suggest that you not worry about JMASM, unless it suddenly becames a leading journal and then I would be happy to apologize to Edstat for my poor statistical/editorial judgment. Vox populi, vox deo!
I shall refrain from discussing Edstat further here, since I've learned that Rfc's are more appropriate for severe misbehavior (and I wouldn't be surprised if one is opened soon.)
It's better to ignore blemishes on minor articles and try to fix the important articles! I would go crazy if I tried to stop every graduate student from writing an article about his professor's great algorithm, especially in machine learning! ;)

Well, you forgot at least two, but I see that WP doesn't care anyway. Not surprised. VernoWhitney actually helped EdStat's sockpuppets, which shows the level of integrity around here. Such pathological inclusionism is the reason I left WP. It trumps everything, even WP policies. Which brings me to another point. You mentioned that you could have published some more articles this year. I highly recommend that you do so next year. I've realized that WP is not worth my time if someone of EdStat's character is allowed to continue editing as he has. You should realize that too. I would be curious about which 2(+?) socks you found that I missed. About inclusionism, Editor ES seems to have dropped using socks in tandem-editing since last Spring (with the blocking), so the administrative intervention has led to improvements. The SPA/COI problems remain, and I hope that the editor can learn here too, although I would not place bets, given the long history. I suspect that a topic ban related to the COI will happen, sooner or later. About VW, I think that it's healthy for an organization when one person plays the role of the Devil's advocate, and I don't mind VW being the lone defender of ES: It shows some character. Ha, "devil's advocate," good one! But I suppose you're right; criminals are entitled to a public defender. Your list focused on the socks from before he was blocked. He started using new socks after that point, though not as often. Check out [2]. The IP is located only about a mile from previous sock IPs. It claims to have "just stumbled across this" as a newcomer, which is something Edstat has done with other socks to appear to be another person. But most importantly, the trolling is seamlessly continued before and after by Edstat himself (look two edits ahead in that list). Another one is [3]. It re-uploaded the copyright violation image that was previously deleted by an administrator. The user page used to have an advertisement for Sawilowsky (since deleted). And of course, the user name is none other than Sawilowsky's journal. Those are just two obvious ones I happened to notice, so there has to be more. But there won't be a block, no matter how sad this all is. That's not how WP operates these days.

Okay its been a while since the Wikipedia Minnesota User Group has meet. Since the last time we meet there has been social upheaval, plague, etc... - no small thing to be sure. There has been some sad lonely discussions on the Minnesota Meetup page on getting together but little action. So here it is. Come and be seen. Talk about the future of the Minnesota User Group and see what nefarious plans we can hatch.
