Scripts++ Newsletter – Issue 18News and updates associated with user scripts from the past three months (September, October, and November 2020). Hello everyone and welcome to the 18th issue of the Wikipedia Scripts++ Newsletter:
My apologies for the delayed issue. As always, if anyone else would like to contribute, help is appreciated. Stay safe, --DannyS712 (talk) 18:20, 1 December 2020 (UTC) teahouse post - new articleThanks for your reply in teahouse. I am really new and could use some help in providing sources so that someone with experience can develop a new article on the Arch of Healing and Reconciliation in Bellingham, WA, installed in 2018. Because I was involved in this project and also have no experience with wikipedia, I don't think I should write the article. What do you suggest? Paul Pengles (talk) 20:46, 24 November 2020 (UTC)
Berrely - Thanks so much. The sources on the Arch are many. I'm listing some newspaper, blog, and radio stories such as the following (some are local and some from other countries such as India): https://www.bellinghamherald.com/news/local/article209486804.html https://www.bellinghamherald.com/news/local/article209640944.html https://www.nwpb.org/2018/04/19/arch-of-healing-remembers-anti-immigrant-history-in-bellingham/ https://www.seattletimes.com/pacific-nw-magazine/satpal-singh-sidhu-puts-a-public-face-on-whatcom-countys-increasingly-integrated-sikh-population/ https://www.southasianpost.com/article/7051-bellingham-monument-honours-sikh-immigrant-community.html https://wp.wwu.edu/theasreview/2018/04/24/arch-of-healing-and-reconciliation-unveiled/ https://medium.com/@galenherz/making-never-again-a-reality-in-bellingham-abdc23f62213 http://www.whatcombar.org/docs/WCBJ_September_2017.pdf https://www.indiawest.com/news/global_indian/arch-of-healing-structure-commemorates-1907-anti-sikh-riots-in-bellingham-washington/article_d6882986-8eab-11e7-b3c7-57f584a60268.html https://www.hindustantimes.com/punjab/110-years-after-racial-riots-against-early-sikh-immigrants-an-arch-of-healing-in-us-city/story-SjlbkYZ4r4cb0bJs65XL5L.html https://bellinghistory.com/blog/2020/10/13/the-chinese-curse-of-bad-town-episode-2 http://theaerogram.com/when-rioters-drove-south-asians-out-of-bellingham/ http://www.cascadiaweekly.com/cw/currents/for_more_than_a_century_sikhs_have_faced_suspicion_andviolence https://www.sikhnet.com/news/three-times-these-immigrant-communities-were-targeted-now-they-will-be-honored also info on several organizations' websites: https://www.whatcomcf.org/arch-of-healing-reconcilation/ https://www.bellinghampubliclibrary.org/news/monument-honors-immigrant-communities-unity-among-county-residents https://www.interfaith-coalition.org/cast Also a video interview for the City of Bellingham and mayoral and county proclamations: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CMGUM6ndMWM https://cob.org/wp-content/uploads/8-2017-Arch-of-Healing-and-Reconciliation-Month.pdf https://www.whatcomcounty.us/Archive/ViewFile/Item/15069 Please let me know if this seems to meet the standards for a new article. Thanks, Paul Pengles (talk) 22:48, 24 November 2020 (UTC) Berrely - Most of the sources that I listed above seem reliable and independent. How significant is a matter of opinion, I suppose. Because this monument is quite unique and addresses historical events and issues that are national and international in scope and importance, I see this and the sources as significant. Please let me know your thoughts on this. Thanks, Paul Pengles (talk) 18:51, 25 November 2020 (UTC) Berrely - I posted this in the "talk" for the A.K. Mozumdar article because I am not seeing a way to edit the spelling of his first name or to provide information about the conflicts. There are also conflicts about the year of his birth which I did edit. What do you suggest?: There are conflicting records regarding the spelling of his name. He signed most official documents as Akhoy Kumar Mozumdar, rather than "Akhay." I have copies of his signed immigration documents and draft registration for WWI and WWII. I believe that this entry should use "Akhoy" for his name. Also I think there shoiuld be a note about conflicting accounts of his birth year. On official documents he gave July 15, 1881 as his birth, but later in life he seems to have fabricated the year, probably because his teaching and beliefs were that his spiritual practice could postpone aging. In later years he gave 1864 as his birth year, which is what is listed in his obituary and headstone plaque. How should this be discussed? I can provide the documents. I edited the article to show 1881 as his birth, but I did not indicate the conflicts. - Paul Pengles (talk) 19:34, 27 November 2020 (UTC) Pengles, apologies for getting back late, I had some a personal issue I had to take care of. I have decided to review some of the sources you provided, as it would take way too long to review them all.
Whilst I appreciate that you spent a while collecting these sources, it would've likely been more efficient than reference bombing with mostly low-quality sources, and instead, it would've helped you and I if you'd tried to find some more reliable ones. I also think you've misunderstood what I mean by "significant". On Wikipedia, a source in significant coverage (see WP:SIGCOV):
As for your most recent question, if you can find independent, reliable source to backup your claims, then you can be bold and change the info yourself. I hope this helps. — Yours, Berrely • Talk∕Contribs 16:16, 29 November 2020 (UTC) Berrely - Thanks. Regarding the question about editing the Mozumdar article, the reliable sources I found are scans of government documents/microfilm that have been made available on genealogy sites such as familysearch.com, so I am not sure how to cite them. Also, as to conflicting sources pertaining to spelling of his name, there does not seem to be a way to edit the very first part of the article that includes his name. Is there any guidance for Wikipedia about dealing with conflicting reliable sources? I found the preponderance of evidence was that he was born in 1881 and edited his DOB as 7/15/1881, but some later sources give his DOB as 7/15/1864. How should these conflicts about name and DOB be indicated? In a footnote? Do you know of any examples? Thanks, Paul Pengles (talk) 18:15, 29 November 2020 (UTC)
Berrely - The documents that I accessed through Familysearch are government documents from the microfilms. They are from U.S. government microfilm collections and were not generated by users. I would be happy to show you the scans, but I don't think I can do that in this talk window. Is there a way I can share these with you or an admin? - Paul Pengles (talk) 05:22, 4 December 2020 (UTC) Draft articleDear Berrely, Thank you for reviewing my article about Hanley High School. As I live in Wiltshire, and because of the corona virus restrictions preventing travelling, I have written to the Stoke-on-Trent Education Authority, and separately to the City Library Archive, asking for information that I can use for citations within my article. The two bodies have responded positively and are currently progressing my requests. However, I would imagine that their archives on historical educational institutions will still be in paper format and not digitised, which may still be a problem in providing you with acceptable citations. If you believe this may still be case then can I suggest that, if you provide me with references to the specific areas of text that are of concern, I can look at redrafting them or deleting them. Many thanks for your time. Best wishes Paul 82.69.110.45 (talk) 16:00, 2 December 2020 (UTC)

Joseph Joachim removed editHello, I recently made an edit to Joseph Joachim's biography page about him premiering Brahms' violin concerto. I was surprised this detail did not make it onto his page, so I added it, but it was removed by you for being "original research" and not having a "reliable, published source." Wikipedia's own page on the Brahms violin concerto lists this fact in the "Premiere" part of the article: "The work was premiered in Leipzig on January 1, 1879, by Joachim..." The fact that Joachim premiered the concerto is also found here on Britannica, and here on the San Francisco Symphony's webpage about the piece. I would appreciate if my edit was reinstated. Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.105.30.210 (talk) 19:19, 5 December 2020 (UTC)
Growth team updates #16Welcome to the sixteenth newsletter from the Growth team! The Growth team's objective is to work on software changes that help retain new contributors in mid-size Wikimedia projects. Growth features show impactNewcomer task experiments results The team recently published our analysis of the impact of newcomer tasks. We are happy to announce that we found that the Growth features, and particularly newcomer tasks, lead to increased editing from newcomers. In November 2019, the Growth team added the "newcomer tasks" feature to the newcomer homepage. After six months, we collected data from Arabic, Vietnamese, Czech, and Korean Wikipedias. We analyzed the overall impact of the Growth features, including newcomer tasks. This analysis finds that the Growth features lead to increases in:
We also find that the quality of their edits, as measured by revert rate, is comparable to that of a control group.
Because of these results, we think all Wikipedias should consider implementing these features. Learn more about how to get them. You can find more details about this experiment on the report page. Please post any feedback or questions on the talk page General metrics As of November 2020, across all wikis where the features have been deployed:
Learn more about Growth results here, and please post any feedback or questions on the talk page. Variants C and DVariants C and D are two new arrangements of the newcomer homepage. We deployed them in October. After six weeks of these variants being deployed, we can see that they have led to increased interactions with newcomer tasks. Next, we will determine which variant is best and use that for all newcomers. News for mentorsA separate list for workshops hosts During workshops organized by education programs through the communities, workshops hosts like to mentor people they train on wiki. Several wikis requested to have a way to claim their mentees without having other newcomers being randomly being assigned to them. To address this need, a separate list can be created on wiki, for mentors that wish to claim mentees, but prefer not to have random mentees being assigned to them. Learn more about this feature. Claiming multiple mentees at once Mentors can use Special:ClaimMentee to claim a newcomer as their mentee. The feature now allows mentors to claim multiple newcomers at once. Community newsThe help panel allows people to post a message to the local help desk while editing. Previously, the tool always posted messages to the bottom of help desks. Wikis are now able to configure it to display new messages at the top of the help desk page. T261714

New Page Patrol December NewsletterHello Isochrone/Archives/2020,
It has been a productive year for New Page Patrol as we've roughly cut the size of the New Page Patrol queue in half this year. We have been fortunate to have a lot of great work done by Rosguill who was the reviewer of the most pages and redirects this past year. Thanks and credit go to JTtheOG and Onel5969 who join Rosguill in repeating in the top 10 from last year. Thanks to John B123, Hughesdarren, and Mccapra who all got the NPR permission this year and joined the top 10. Also new to the top ten is DannyS712 bot III, programmed by DannyS712 which has helped to dramatically reduce the number of redirects that have needed human patrolling by patrolling certain types of redirects (e.g. for differences in accents) and by also patrolling editors who are on on the redirect whitelist.
John B123 has been named reviewer of the year for 2020. John has held the permission for just over 6 months and in that time has helped cut into the queue by reviewing more than 18,000 articles. His talk page shows his efforts to communicate with users, upholding NPP's goal of nurturing new users and quality over quantity.
As a special recognition and thank you DannyS712 has been awarded the first NPP Technical Achievement Award. His work programming the bot has helped us patrol redirects tremendously - more than 60,000 redirects this past year. This has been a large contribution to New Page Patrol and definitely is worthy of recognition. Hi, you recently declined my article name "Major Adil Farooq Raja(Retd)". I'd like to know how can I improve it to get it accepted as an article. I am asking this because I have included links and citations alongside now. Maybe if there's still something it lack?
