Questions to Ezhiki

A user is considered "new" for the purpose of of editing semiprotecting articles for five days since registration.

It is OK to use Russian as far as:

  • You are sure the other person understands it as well.
  • It is not used as a "secret language" for conspiring behind somebody's backs. Any user may ask for a translation is [s]he feels that it was the case.
  • It is not used to make personal attacks against another user.

Ah, I see Alex beat me to it. Here is a crosspost from my page (mostly with the same information) anyway.
Hi, Ilya! "New" users are the users who registered within the last four days. Since you only registered yesterday, you won't be able to edit semi-protected pages for two more days. This is done mostly to prevent vandalism from throwaway accounts, but also to give new users time to learn the ropes, so to speak. In any case, if you find semi-protected page you really need to edit, you can put the {{editprotected}} template on that article's talk page, or you can ask someone else directly to edit it for you (you can ask me if you want :))
As for leaving messages in Russian on users' talk pages, that is generally OK, but should not be done without necessity. This is the English edition of Wikipedia after all! There is a Russian edition of Wikipedia, by the way; you could always write in Russian there :)

Siberia vs. RFE

Hi there! It is usually OK to refer to the Russian Far East as "Siberia" when you speak of it from historical point of view, or when you refer to the whole region in general, or when precision does not matter, but once you need to pinpoint an exact location (such as the island of Sakhalin, for example), you need to distinguish between Siberia proper and the Russian Far East. As i understood you are Russian so...

Could you please help with the Russian martial arts thing?

I will tell you the problems:

1. Russian martial arts article needs referencing, and i couldn't find thise.

2. There are articles about martial arts in Russian that need to be translated to English. After translated to English, they also need to be referenced and expanded (the demends on the English Wikipedia are higher). Those articles are: [1], [2], [3].

мои поправки были расценены как вандализм и отклонены. думаю, что решение было немного преждевременным. я интересуюсь творчеством обоих вокалисток и слушал кучу материала по обеим. та информация, которую я внес в статью, имеет право там быть. тем более, что там высказано предположение, а не утверждение. более того, речь идет о шоу-бизнесе, где правда бывает скрыта от людей на долгие годы, которую люди имеют права знать, которую люди имеют право искать, прибегая к помощи данной энциклопедии!

поправки были внесены в статью про вокалистку Dhany вот они:

There is a supposition that Dhany’s voice might be actually Sandy Chambers’s voice modified by sound effects to be almost unrecognizable. Such a rumor might be due to the presence of much resemblance between the manner and the style of sinning of both vocalists. The admires of Sandy Chambers voice might also notice many hues in Dhany’s voice similar to Chambers’s. Also it’s hardly imaginable for white girl with such a good appearance to own such a powerful voice close to black female voices (like the one may hear on the words “cry again” in ‘Benassi Bros. feat. Dhany – Hit My Heart’). Also as the argument might be the fact that beautiful Dhany is mentioned as one of the authors of ‘Hit My Heart’ and some other late songs of ‘J.K.’ project. J.K. is known for the fact that almost all songs were sung by Sandy Chambers (including ‘Hit My Heart’ in 2001 year, covered later by Benassi Bros. project) whereas the face of J.K. project was model Marta Simlat. It’s also worth to mention that ‘J.K. – You and I’ song was sung by Jenny Bersola, so the project was not shy to switch the voices. Having such a voice and being close working with music producers Dhany might perform the song for J.K. herself or at least to have a huge list of performed songs as Chambers does. And the last argument is that Chambers is a superb studio vocalist who can vary the voice so craftily that sometimes it is hard to identify it even in songs where she is mentioned as a vocalist or her performance is commonly accepted. Though of course all of it is just a supposition and no more. Hello. In Wikipedia, reference means, that you have found the information from a different web-site, book or other reliable source. This is required to prevent people adding their own opinions to articles. I tried to search Google, but I didn't find any information about this thing.
If you can tell any source where to find this info, I will add the references. Thank you.

Но, скажу честно, что я разговаривал по электронной почте с владелицей сайта - она не до конца согласна с этим мнением, поэтому, размещая эту информацию, сделала оговорку, что это предположение, слух. Yay! I'm adopted! Thanks a bundle. First off, the main reason I applied for adoption was because I was (and still am) having trouble finding pages which I can contribute a fair ammount to. I had a few major edits near the start of my wikipedianship, but I soon ran out of steam and just started fixing typos and reverting vandalism. Actually, on the topic of vandalism, do you have any suggestions for antivandalism tools? I was going to download VandalProof, but I need a recommended 250 mainspace edits before getting approval. Well I have tendency to start a story then decide to take a break from it for a while, and the break from it usually ends up being a little too long and I forget what I was going to write about by that time... but I think that the story I'm writing this time is better than anything I've written before so I really hope to finish it. When I actually do finish a story I usually e-mail it to my cousin and see what she thinks. She hasn't liked any of the stories I've written but this one she definately will like because one of the characters is not only named after her but also acts like her. Thanks for the antivandalism suggestion; I'll get back to you about it once I've tried it out! As for what subjects I'm interested in, I enjoy topics on rock music (bands, artists, instruments etc.), computer related subjects, video game topics, and philosophy, though I actually have very little knowledge on the subject (but it's philosophy; that's kind of the point ;-P ). About the last message you sent me; what exactly did you mean by it? I didn't see any tasks on the page you linked to, but I would love if you had some spacific tasks for me to do! Lastly, I have a question about uploading pictures; from what I've read, it seems okay to scan the cover of an album and upload it, providing that I put copyright information on it (even though album covers don't usually specify copyright info). Vandalism

Thanks for the tips! I just gave out my first warning (I feel so much more useful when I warn instead of just reverting!), and I'm wondering if it's possible to constantly keep track of a users edits so that I can warn users again if they continue to vandalize (you can't just put a user contributions page on your watchlist). How's it going? I actually found a way to monitor user contributions; if you add {{subst:js|User:Tra/whatlinksherewatchlist.js}} to your monobook, then add a userpage to your watchlist, this page will act as a watchlist for user contributions. Actually I do have one more question I would like to ask; the Lost Cause (song) page includes a free image. The image's page states that this is a violation of Wikipedia's non-free content criteria because it is being used on a page other than the one described in the image description. I noticed that the Cellphone's Dead page has simmilar image use, but there is nothing mentioning a violation on that images page. Is the way that the image on Cellphone's Dead is used okay, or has no one spotted this violation? If it is okay, would the Lost Cause image be okay too? And how would I go about clarifying this on the image's page?

Re IP user warnings

Yea, that's the problem with the automated report page. Blocked user are filtered out as "done" while they can still abuse their talk pages. Last night there were ten or so socks within twenty minutes who all had their talk page converted into a huge attack poster. Huggle is for fighting vandalism. This isn't vandalism, but a content dispute (have you read the article btw?). So reverting with no discussion is not the proper use of Huggle (from the Huggle page), and improperly using the term "vandalism" is not acceptible. The fact that this keeps getting redone by users who have never edited that page seconds after it is reverted proves that they aren't reading what's being done. And yes, some statement McCain said in a speech at some point which has no basis in economic theory (see financial speculation section earlier in the article) is most certainly a political advertisement. The remainder of the section is a list of bills having NOTHING to do with financial speculation... they were written a year before the public even knew that financial speculation existed in the petroleum market and have more to do with oil company profits and taxes. 98.235.103.32 (talk) 18:26, 28 August 2008 (UTC)
FYI Avoid the word "vandal". In particular, the word should not be used in reference to any contributor in good standing or to any edits that can arguably be construed as good-faithed. Motto of the day

Hello, I notice you're using one of the {{motd}} templates, run by Wikipedia:Motto of the day. You may have noticed that some of the mottos recently have been followed by a date from 2006, or on occasion simply "Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia". The reason for this is that Motto of the day is in some very serious need of help. Participation in the project, which has never been especially high, has dropped considerably over this past summer, to the point we have had several days where no motto was scheduled to appear at all. Over the past several weeks, I've been the only editor scheduling mottos at all, but there aren't enough comments on some of these mottos to justify their use. If we do not get some help - and soon - your daily mottos will stop. In order for us to continue updating these templates for you, we need your help.

When you get a chance between your normal editing, could you stop by our nominations page and leave a few comments on some of the mottos there, especially those that do not have any comments yet? This works very simply; you read a motto, decide whether or not you like it, and post your opinion just below the motto. That's it - no experience required, just an idea of what you personally like and what you feel reflects Wikipedia and its community. If you do have past experience with the project, then please close some of the older nominations once they've got a decent consensus going. There are directions on the nominations page on how to do this.

Hello. I'm part of a research group at the University of Washington. In April, we met with some local Wikipedians to learn what they would like to know about other editors’ history and activities (within Wikipedia) when interacting with them on talk pages. The goal of those sessions was to gather feedback to help design an embedded application that could quickly communicate useful information about other Wikipedians. We have now created a few images that we feel represent some of what our participants thought was important.
