Welcome

Welcome!

Hello Henrik/Archive 1, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and the date. If you have any questions, check out Wikipedia:Where to ask a question or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome!

And one remark. Tex-ifying equations is good, as long as it does not lead to (excessive) number of formulas which appear as images, unless those formulas are displayed on their own line. That per the math style manual. Enjoy! Oleg Alexandrov (talk) 22:18, 6 January 2006 (UTC)

Much thanks for the welcome, Oleg. I wanted to read the article, and tex-style equations are much easier to read (for me at least). But the math style manual is right, it makes sense to write inline equations in html. Thanks for the link. Henrik 23:10, 6 January 2006 (UTC)
Some formulas look just awful in html, agree. Then probably one may use LaTeX. There is no perfect solution. We are praying for MathML improve on things, whenever that time comes. Oleg Alexandrov (talk) 00:31, 7 January 2006 (UTC)

Thanks

Thank you Henrik. StabiloBoss 17:07, 7 March 2006 (UTC)

You're welcome :-) The welcome message I got from Oleg Alexandrov above really encouraged me to stick around and edit, so I try to return the favor when I can. If you have any problems editing in the future, I'd be happy to try to help out. Henrik 17:36, 7 March 2006 (UTC)
Good :) I will not forget and I will ask you. Don't forget about it :) StabiloBoss 17:43, 7 March 2006 (UTC)

Thanks [[1]] :)

You also :) [[2] StabiloBoss 19:36, 8 March 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your help. The language box on your user page is cool, I added one to demonstrate my limited language abilities. Is there a guide to all those nifty tags I can put on my user page or all those nifty tags I can put at the top of articles? KevinPuj 19:54, 10 April 2006 (UTC)

It's not that I deleted it, it's that I kept putting it in the wrong place. :-P I'm such a newbie around here I'm making all these edits repositioning things. I also have this habit of typing my username after the four tildes so that it signs my name and then there's text afterwards. KevinPuj 20:08, 10 April 2006 (UTC)

Hey there, Henrik!

Hey there, Henrik! Thank you so much for that information about how to put a picture into an article. I have been trying to do that for the past two weeks and it has been getting me nowhere! I was almost beginning to give up before I got the message! I only just got a new account for wikipedia a couple of weeks ago because I wanted to put up some information about Carey Mulligan so I basically have no clue as to what I'm doing. :0). Thanks again. xo. AdaClare 21:32, 16 March 2006 (UTC)

(Oops, I almost missed this message) No problem, this place can be pretty confusing :-) I hope you decide to stick around. If there's anything else you're having problems with, just send me a message and I'll try to help out! Henrik 18:09, 18 March 2006 (UTC)

Welcome to Esperanza

Welcome, Henrik/Archive 1, to Esperanza, the Wikipedia member association! As you might know, all the Esperanzians share one important goal: the success of this encyclopedia. Within that, we then attempt to strengthen the community bonds, and be the "approachable" side of the project. All of our ideals are held in the Charter, the governing document of the association.

Now that you are a member, you might be interested in some of our programs. A quite important program is the StressUnit, which seeks to support editors who have encountered any stress from their Wikipedia events, and are seeking to leave the project. So far, Esperanza can be credited with the support and retention of several users. Also, we have a calendar of special events, member birthdays, and other holidays that you can add to and follow.

In addition to these projects, several more missions of Esperanza are in development, and are currently being created at Esperanza/Possibles.

I encourage you to take an active voice in the running of Esperanza. We have a small government system, headed by our Administrator general, Celestianpower, and guided by the Advisory Committee , KnowledgeOfSelf, JoanneB, Titoxd and FireFox. The elections have ended.

If you have any other questions, concerns, comments, or general ideas, Esperanzian or otherwise, know that you can always contact me via email or talk page. Alternatively, you could communicate with fellow users via our IRC channel, #wikipedia-esperanza (which is also good for a fun chat or two :). I thank you for joining Esperanza, and look forward to working with you in making Wikipedia a better place to be!

Thanks! -- File:Ottawa flag.png nathanrdotcom (TCW) 19:55, 8 March 2006 (UTC)

Thank you! *haha* Nice practical joke. One question: The spam list seems to have been deleted, does it exist elsewhere or is it is time to update the welcoming template? Henrik 20:07, 8 March 2006 (UTC)
You're welcome. I have no idea, so I think I'll just update the template. - File:Ottawa flag.png nathanrdotcom (TCW) 20:33, 8 March 2006 (UTC)

Note

Hello, I noticed you edited a Hip Hop related article. If you wish you can join the new Hip Hop Wikiproject. Thanks for your time. Tutmosis 22:55, 19 March 2006 (UTC)

Consignee

I notice that you have put the technical template on to consignee. As I said on the talk page some time ago, this is a technical subject and a lay reader should probably go to a technical source for the full explanation. However, if you would care to co-operate by indicating which sentences should be explained and why, I will rewrite those elements. It is customary to do this on the talk pages when you put up the template so that you can take responsibility for guiding the process, but since you are new to Wiki, we can start the process of clarification now. Please reply on the talk page. David91 03:24, 23 March 2006 (UTC)

I just did a small mini-project of moving all misplaced technical templates on articles to the corresponding talk pages, so I didn't really add the technical template. That was done by User:Seano1 in july last year (see here). Personally, I think Consignee is reads fine, so we could just remove the template. Henrik 06:58, 23 March 2006 (UTC)

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #1

Reach out is a program aimed at allowing users to bring issues that they have had in Wikipedia to a listening, sympathetic and caring audience:
"No one can know how we feel if we do not say. We cannot expect to get understanding if we do not ask for it. No one will dispute that sometimes life's issues are too much for one person. It is fair to say that sometimes Wikipedia's problems fall under the same heading. This is a place where you can bring the bruises that can sometimes be got on this project for attention."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Note from the editor
Welcome to this new format of the Esperanza Newsletter, which came about during the last Advisory Council meeting - we hope you like it! The major changes are that each month, right after the Council meeting, this will be sent out and will include two featured programs and a sum up of the meeting. Also, it will be signed by all of the Advisory Council members, not just Celestianpower. Have an Esperanzial end of March, everyone!
  1. Future meetings are to be held monthly, not fortnightly as before.
  2. Bans and Access level changes (apart from autovoice) in the IRC channel are to be reported at the new log.
  3. In the IRC channel, there is going to be only one bot at a time.
  4. The charter requires members to have 150 edits and 2 weeks editing. Why this is the case will be clarified.
  5. A new Code of Conduct will be drafted by JoanneB and proposed to the Esperanza community.
  6. The NPA reform idea is to be dropped officially.
  7. Charter ammendments are to be discussed in future, not voted on.
  8. The Advisory Council is not going to be proposed to be expanded by the Advisory Council themselves, if others want to propose it, they will listen.

Cyclical time

I do not appreciate your rude behavior. If you don't like what I am typing, let me know. I have an account and you can send me an email. My work is in progress. —Preceding unsigned comment added by riveros11 (talkcontribs)

Wikipedia requires that all content be verifiable and does not allow original research. If you have references that can be used to verify the content of Cyclical time that's great! But otherwise, it may not be suitable for inclusion in wikipedia. Henrik 21:35, 1 April 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedia survey

Hi. I'm doing a survey of Wikipedia editors as part of a class research project. It's quick, anonymous, and the data will be made available to the Wikipedia community later this month. Would you like to take part? More info here. Thanks! Nonplus 00:21, 2 April 2006 (UTC)

Hello Henrik. Thanks for letting me know! I think most of your changes were probably good ideas. I know I'm biased, so I don't mind at all when you help to make the text more neutral. The article is starting to look really nice! Have a great day! Sarah crane 17:17, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

Hi again! Boy, I can't even read the stuff User:Izuko writes anymore. He's so rude and confrontational that I can't see straight. If he makes any points that are actually useful, maybe you could summarize them for me? I'll try using the preview button more. Thanks for the tip! By the way, I'm working on Raytheon now. I hope it goes a little better! Sarah crane 14:41, 5 April 2006 (UTC)

Not much fun

Henrik, you're very sweet. Even when you disagree with me, you've been respectful and helpful. Thanks for your kind note. I just wish people wouldn't attack other people when they're just trying to improve articles! Maybe I should just leave the NG article alone. I don't want to just give up on it, but if I keep fighting there I'll lose my temper and it won't be pretty. Thanks again! Sarah crane 19:43, 5 April 2006 (UTC)

So you are warning me because you support propaganda?

Nice try Henrik. But Sarah crane is trying to make wikipedia her soapbox. It is not valid and more valid sources belongs on wikipedia. Not a "watchdog" managed by 1 person. ViriiK 16:17, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

Hello ViriiK. I've looked at the article in question and there doesn't seem to be any objectionable content, but instead a fairly factual description of the company. Who runs the site is far less important than the content. Henrik 16:20, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #2

The Barnstar Brigade is a new program aimed at giving more very deserving yet unappreciated users barnstars. It will officially start on 2006-04-09, but signing up is encouraged before this date:
"Here in Wikipedia, there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go un-appreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go un-noticed. Sadly, these editors often leave the project. As Esperanzians, we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. A project the size of Wikipedia has thousands of editors, so there are plenty of people out there who deserve recognition, one just has to find them. The object of this program is not to flood editors with Barnstars, but to seek out people who deserve them, and make them feel appreciated."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Information
Welcome to the second issue of the new format Esperanza Newsletter - we hope you still like it! This week, it was delivered diligently by our new dogsbody. MiszaBot (run by Misza13): any execution complaints should go to him. Content comments should be directed at the Esperanza talkpage. Thanks!
  1. The next elections: Approval voting as before and, also as before, an previous leadership member can run. Please submit your name for voting in the relevant section of this page. Voting starts on 2006-04-23 and ends on 2006-04-30. There will be three places up for grabs as KnowledgeOfSelf is leaving Wikipedia. Please see the previously linked page for full details.
  2. The Code of Conduct is now ready for extensive discussion! Specific comments should go to the Code of Conduct talk page, discussion of having one at all should be directed to the main Esperanza talk page.
  3. The current process for accepting proposals for new programs has been deemed fine. All Advisory Council members and the Admin Gen are to endevour to be bold when viewing discussion. If they feel that consensus has been reached, they will act accordingly.
A plea from the editor...
The propsed programs page is terribly underused! Please leave any comments, good or bad, on the page, to help us determine the membership's thoughts on the ideas there.

Thanks for your help. The language box on your user page is cool, I added one to demonstrate my limited language abilities. Is there a guide to all those nifty tags I can put on my user page or all those nifty tags I can put at the top of articles? KevinPuj 19:54, 10 April 2006 (UTC)

Here is a list of template messages that can be put on pages. As you can see, there is quite a few :). As for the user boxes, they're found here. BTW, I rather liked your message, any special reason why you deleted it? Henrik 20:05, 10 April 2006 (UTC)
No problem! The most common way of using talk pages is to put new messages at the bottom, under a new section - which you can create like this: == title here == . (Or just click the little "+" at the right of "Edit this page", to create a new section). Also, the preview button is really useful for seeing if your formatting looks OK :-) Henrik 20:14, 10 April 2006 (UTC)

I really should start previewing. Thank you for all of your help! KevinPuj 20:25, 10 April 2006 (UTC)

P-ENERGEN

I saw you're rewrite. Very nice. Do you mean I will need to add information on how to use the device? If so, are images necessary? I'll put that usage info this evening. I'll also show you info. regarding rubdown in Japan and see if this could enchance the article. jtakano (T

Yeah, that would be nice with a brief section that explained it how you actually hook up the device and use it practically. Henrik 06:42, 15 March 2006 (UTC)

Just finished editing it. Please check it. Do you think this is worthy to be in wikipedia?

Great, much thanks! It might be a little bit too detailed in some places, but I can fix that. Henrik 14:55, 15 March 2006 (UTC)

Revised the first intro as requested by my father. You can delete anything you think inappropriate or too wordy. James

Reworded Usage section. What else should be done? Jtakano 14:21, 18 March 2006 (UTC)

Hey guys. I'm in Myrtle Bch. for Spring Break. I'll be back Sunday. If you want to move forward before then, contact the guy who deleted it (he can be found somewhere on my Talk page). Otherwise, I'll contact him when I return and we can go from there, including trying to ascertain its notability on the basis of its "google footprint" ;-). All the best, -T 165.247.178.88 01:24, 23 March 2006 (UTC) (not signed in: Tomer)

I contacted Jdoorjam but never get a reply. Why is that? Jtakano 13:53, 24 March 2006 (UTC)

Henrik, with regards to its notability, below URLs shows information from other users regarding this device. Just search for "energen" 1. http://www.royalrife.com/hepatitis-c.html 2. http://www.xtrememind.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=424&sid=ae996c2190f303e24637e1a4bbc570fe 3. http://www.newmediaexplorer.org/chris/2005/10/02/dr_fr_klenners_protocol_for_multiple_sclerosis.htm 4. http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/Mr_Tracys_Corner/message/52534

If you search very deeply on this Yahoo group, mostly old messages http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/Mr_Tracys_Corner/messagesearch/51751?query=pyro+energen&submit=Search+More you'll find a lot of info.

Specifically this one: http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/electroherbalism/message/4038

Please tell me what you think? Jtakano 13:54, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

Hm. The problem with those links is that none of them really seem to meet the guidelines set out in Wikipedia:Reliable_sources. If there are there any japanese sources that can be considered reliable according to the guidelines, they could be used. Henrik 19:05, 28 March 2006 (UTC)

I see. I read the guidelines. How about this: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=12218940&dopt=Abstract The device creates static electricity which has the same effect as the rubdown - so same results. Jtakano 02:28, 29 March 2006 (UTC)

That seems more promising, but it may be more suitable for a general "health effects of static electricity" article. But actually, we have good sources for the claims the device makes (it's right on the website) - but what we don't have are references for someone evaluating it scientifically. But I've reworded (and renamed) the criticism section now. Henrik 09:32, 31 March 2006 (UTC)

Henrik, is it possible to revise the last sentence that says "illegal to sell". If it's necessary to put that sentence, I guess I cannot put it in the article space. Jtakano 04:08, 1 April 2006 (UTC)

Sure. If I've misinterpreted the FDA regulations regarding devices, it should definitely be removed. Am I wrong? Henrik 21:35, 1 April 2006 (UTC)

I think in USA, this device is approved by FDA. There's a link here: http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/rife-list/message/4789 Anyway, I just wanted you delete the last sentence, if that's OK? Jtakano 09:49, 2 April 2006 (UTC)

Henrik, unfortunately, I can't find any scientifical research to it. Whatever it is, is the article ready now? Jtakano 10:14, 12 April 2006 (UTC)

I think this has taken long enough, so I think it could be put back into article space. If someone objects to it again, it should be put through a AfD vote to determine concensus on whether it should be kept permanently or not. Henrik 11:35, 12 April 2006 (UTC)

I just added the article. Let's just see what will happen next. Thank's for all your help Henrik. Jtakano 11:13, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

Indent paragraph

How do I intend the beginning of a paragraph? Thank you. Subhash 21:05, 14 April 2006 (UTC)

Requesting editing help

I made a spelling mistake in my preceding request for help. I really wanted to type indent instead of intend. Sorry about that. Subhash 21:13, 14 April 2006 (UTC)

No problem. What you do is put a ":" as the first character of the line (you can look at the source of this to see how I did it).
Two "::" will indent two levels.
And three.. well you get the picture :-)
I hope this helps! Henrik 21:44, 14 April 2006 (UTC)

from 0waldo

OK, again this solidifies what I speak of concerning "gang up on 0waldo". Two or more destructive editors undo the valid work that I do and the I get a 3R and they don't - tune into the real picture of persecute waldo - it is nothing else. I put a trademark where it belongs and a couple of greenhorns that know NOTHING about U.S. trademark laws undo what I have done! And then you show up, "magically" and tell me I'm going to get blocked? FOR GODZ SAKE QUIT PERSECUTING ME! 0waldo 18:03, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

Hello 0waldo! I don't think anyone is trying to gang up on you personally. However, you can't simply force your way in an article without risking 3RR violations. When four separate editors have reverted your changes, it might be time to pause, drink a cup of tea and contemplate that they might have a point. (It seems likely you have misunderstood trademark law, because your interpretation of it doesn't seem to be the same as everyone elses). Cheers, Henrik 18:30, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

VandalProof 1.1 is Now Available For Download

Happy Easter to all of you, and I hope that this version may fix your current problems and perhaps provide you with a few useful new tools. You can download version 1.1 at User:AmiDaniel/VandalProof. Let me warn you, however, to please be extremely careful when using the new Rollback All Contributions feature, as, aside from the excessive server lag it would cause if everyone began using it at once, it could seriously aggitate several editors to have their contributions reverted. If you would like to experiment with it, though, I'd be more than happy to use my many sockpuppets to create some "vandalism" for you to revert. If you have any problems downloading, installing, or otherwise, please tell me about them at User:AmiDaniel/VP/Bugs and I will do my best to help you. Thanks. Hey, I'm really glad I happened upon your user page and found your Google hack. The internal Wikipedia search sucks and I'm happy to be able to use Google in its place. I did make a small change though. I love the "I'm Feeling Lucky!" button and I needed to have it, plus I wanted pretty pictures, so I switched the "Google Search" button with this:

'<INPUT type="submit" value="" name="btnG" style="background:url(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/c/cc/Google%28small%29.png); height:45px; width:105px" />'+
'<INPUT type="submit" value="" name="btnI" style="background:url(http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/c/c0/SmallDice.jpg); height:45px; width:63px" />

Here is what that looks like. I'm pretty happy with it! Thanks for putting it up. GT 11:48, 25 April 2006 (UTC)

I'm glad you liked it! I (obviously) agree with you about Wikipedia's internal search engine, a google site search is pretty much always better. Your changes look very nice (I almost never use the "I'm feeling lucky" button, so that's why I didn't include it) Henrik 12:52, 25 April 2006 (UTC)

Page Deleted by One Person

Hello.

What gives a single person authority to delete a page?

How does that work?

Thank you. Movieresearch 15:47, 26 April 2006 (UTC)

There are a few different ways an article can be deleted - if it can be considered an "obvious" case, it can be speedily deleted by any administrator. This page has more information. If it doesn't meet the speedy deletion criteria, it should usually be discussed first. There is a lot of nonsense flowing into wikipedia and thousands of articles are deleted every day, so mistakes are made - the best way might be to politely ask the person who deleted the article why they did so and explain your reasons why you think the article should be kept. Which article are you talking about? Henrik 15:54, 26 April 2006 (UTC)

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #3

The Administrator Coaching program is a program aimed at preparing Wikipedians for Adminship or helping them understand the intricacies of Wikipedia better. Recently, changes have been made to the requirements of coachees. Please review them before requesting this service.
This would be something like the Welcoming Committee, but for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. Some might like suggestions about how to learn vandal patrol, or mentoring on taking an article to featured status, or guidance with a proposal they plan to make at the Village Pump, for example. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.
The Stressbusters are a subset of Esperanza aiming to investigate the causes of stress. New eyes on the situation are always welcome!
Note from the editor
As always, MiszaBot handled this delivery. Thank you! Also, congratulations go to Pschemp, Titoxd and Freakofnurture for being elected in the last elections! An Esperanzial May to all of the readership!
  1. Posting logs of the Esperanza IRC channel are explicitly banned anywhere. Violation of this rule results in deletion and a ban from the channel.
  2. A disclaimer is going to be added to the Esperanza main page. We are humans and, as such, are imperfect.
  3. Various revisions have been made to the Code of Conduct. Please see them, as the proposal is ready to be ratified by the community and enacted. All members will members to have to re-confirm their membership after accepting the Code of Conduct.
  4. Referendums are to be held on whether terms of AC members should be lengthened and whether we should abolish votes full stop.
  5. Admin Coaching reform is agreed upon.

VandalProof 1.2 Now Available

After a lenghty, but much-needed Wikibreak, I'm happy to announce that version 1.2 of VandalProof is now available for download! Beyond fixing some of the most obnoxious bugs, like the persistent crash on start-up that many have experienced, version 1.2 also offers a wide variety of new features, including a stub-sorter, a global user whitelist and blacklist, navigational controls, and greater customization. You can find a full list of the new features here. While I believe this release to be a significant improvement over the last, it's nonetheless nowhere near the end of the line for VandalProof. Thanks to Rob Church, I now have an account on test.wikipedia.org with SysOp rights and have already been hard at work incorporating administrative tools into VandalProof, which I plan to make available in the near future. An example of one such SysOp tool that I'm working on incorporating is my simple history merge tool, which simplifies the process of performing history merges from one article into another. Anyway, if you haven't already, I'd encourage you to download and install version 1.2 and take it out for a test-drive. As always, your suggestions for improvement are always appreciated, and I hope that you will find this new version useful. Happy editing! --AmiDaniel (talk) 02:30, 21 May 2006 (UTC)

Henrik! - Object for Deletion

Someone put a deletion template within 5 days here. Is there something we can do? Jtakano 13:12, 10 June 2006 (UTC)

Hi Jtakano! You can simply remove the template and then write a message to the person that put it there, explaining why the article should be kept. He or she may opt to put it through a AfD process though, in which case Wikipedia consensus will decide if it's kept or not. Henrik 08:43, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

seach idea;

I like the installable search at User:Henrik/sandbox/google-search ... but I miss the 'go' ability of the default. What is the chance of adding a 'go' button necxt to the google search that has the same function as replacing the articlename in the url? (that is the easiest path to article creation. -- Wirelain 22:54, 16 June 2006 (UTC)

Thanks. I'll see what I can do about the go button, it shouldn't be too difficult to add it. Henrik 05:46, 17 June 2006 (UTC)

A short Esperanzial update

As you may have gathered, discussions have been raging for about a week on the Esperanza talk page as to the future direction of Esperanza. Some of these are still ongoing and warrant more input (such as the idea to scrap the members list altogether). However, some decisions have been made and the charter has hence been amended. See what happened. Basically, the whole leadership has had a reshuffle, so please review the new, improved charter.

As a result, we are electing 4 people this month. They will replace JoanneB and Pschemp and form a new tranche A, serving until December. Elections will begin on 2006-07-02 and last until 2006-07-09. If you wish to run for a Council position, add your name to the list before 2006-07-02. For more details, see Wikipedia:Esperanza/June 2006 elections.

Thanks and kind, Esperanzial regards, —Celestianpower háblame 16:00, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

August Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: To-Do List
The Esperanza To-Do List is a place where you may list any request, big or small, for assistance. If you need help with archiving your usertalk, for example, all you need to do is list it here and somebody will help you out. Likewise, if you need help with some area of editing on Wikipedia, list it here! Again, any matter, trivial or not, can be placed on this page. However, all matters listed on this page must not be of an argumentative nature. You do not need to be a member of Esperanza (or this program) to place or fulfill requests on this page. If you don't have any requests, consider coming by and fulfilling a few! This program has not been very active, but has lots of potential!
What's New?
In order to help proposed programs become specific enough to make into full-fledged programs, the In development section of the proposals page has been created. Proposals that are promising, but need to be organized in more detail are listed here. Please take a look at what is there, and help the proposals turn into programs.
To improve both the layout and text of the front page, in an attempt to clarify the image of Esperanza, the front page is going to have some redesigning take place. Please take your creative minds to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Front page redesign to brainstorm good ideas.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. In order to make sure all users who join Esperanza are welcomed, a list of volunteers who are willing to welcome new Esperanzians is at Wikipedia:Esperanza/Members#Esperanza_welcomers. Please add yourself if you are interested; we want to make sure all new Esperanza members are welcomed!
  2. The In development section of the proposals page has been created.
  3. Proposals page: Some proposals have been moved to the aforementioned "In development" section, some have been left as a proposal, and others have been archived. For those proposals that were a good idea but didn't necessarily constitute a program, General Esperanzial Actions has been created.
  4. Two small pieces of charter reform will be decided on in a straw poll at Wikipedia talk:Esperanza/Governance. One involves filling the position of any councillors who may leave, the other involves reforming the charter.
  5. Until cooperation with the Kindness Campaign is better defined, it remains as a proposed program.
  6. There is a page for discussing the front page redesign.

September Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: Barnstar Brigade
Here in Wikipedia there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go unappreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go unnoticed. As Esperanzians we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. This is where the Barnstar Brigade comes in. The object of this program is to seek out the people which deserve a Barnstar, and help them feel appreciated. With your help, we can recognize more dedicated editors!
What's New?
September elections are upon us! Anyone wishing to be a part of the Advisory Council may list themselves as a candidate from 18 September until 24 September, with the voting taking place from 25 September to 30 September. Those who wish to help with the election staff should also list themselves!
Appreciation Week, a program currently in development, now has its own subpage! Share your good ideas on how to make it awesome there!
The Esperanza front page has been redesigned! Many thanks to all who worked hard on it.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. The proposals page has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  2. Since the program in development Appretiaion week is getting lots of good ideas, it now has its own subpage.
  3. The September 2006 Council elections will open for nominations on 18 September 2006. The voting will run from 25 September 2006 until 30 September 2006. If you wish to be a candidate or a member of the elections staff, please list yourself!
  4. The new Esperanza front page design has but put up - many thanks to all who worked on it!
  5. TangoTango has written a script for a bot that will list new members of Esperanza, which will help those who welcome new Esperanzains greatly!

November Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: Admin Coaching (needs coaches!)
Admin Coaching needs coaches!!! If you are an administrator, or even a generally experienced user, do consider signing up to be a coach.

Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Wikipedia policy and culture. People are matched with experienced users who are willing to offer coaching. The program is designed for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.

What's New?
The Tutorial Drive is a new Esperanza program! In an effort to make complicated processes on Wikipedia easier for everyone, Esperanza working to create and compile a list of tutorials about processes here on Wikipedia. Consider writing one!
A discussion on how Esperanza relates to the encyclopedia has been started; please add your thoughts.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  • The list of proposed programs has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  • There is now a new program: the Tutorial Drive! Consider writing a tutorial on something you are good at doing on Wikipedia.
  • The suggestion of adding a cohesive look to all the Esperanza pages is being considered; join the discussion if you are interested!
  • In order to make a useful interlanguage welcome template, those involved in translation projects will be asked what English Wikipedia policies are most important and confusing to editors coming from other language Wikipedias.
  • A discussion of Esperanza's role in Wikipedia is being held, with all thoughts of all Esperanzians wanted!
  • Shreshth91 informed everyone that he will be leaving the Esperanza council as life is rather busy; his spot will be filled by the runner up from the last election, HighwayCello.

Question about privacy in articles

Hello Henrik - I have a general question about privacy in Wikipedia articles. I'm directing this question to you only because I know you are an editor (you edited one of my articles in the past). I recently published an article and someone else added information containing personal details (including complete addresses) of living persons. I believe this compromises the privacy of living individuals (security reasons). What are Wikipedia's policies or thoughts in this regard? if I am correct about this, I would like to know if you or anyone you know has the capability to delete this reference from the "History" tab of the article (I deleted the references to personal private information from the current article already but the history tab still shows it). The article is Marino de Bona. The following are the specific versions of the article:

(cur) (last) 22:57, December 30, 2006 201.215.21.2 (Talk)

(cur) (last) 22:57, December 30, 2006 201.215.21.2 (Talk)

(cur) (last) 22:55, December 30, 2006 201.215.21.2 (Talk)

Please advice. Give me your opinion and let me know if these can be deleted permanently.

Santiago 21:27, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

Sorry for the late reply, my Wikipedia activity has dropped off lately. In general I think the personal details of living persons shouldn't be posted without very good reasons, which doesn't seem to be the case here. You can read more at WP:BLP. If you want to notify an admin, do that here. Henrik 15:19, 28 January 2007 (UTC)

I have restored the article to let an AFD run. An editor has expressed that he/she feels the article read like spam and reading the article, other than being successful, I don't see the notability, but I realize that can be subjective. Happy editing! Ocatecir Talk 15:57, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

Many thanks for your prompt attention! It seems the editor originally tagging it as spam went on a deleting spree against electronics design companies (just before leaving wikipedia). One of the other articles he tagged as spam was Cadence Design Systems, one of the largest companies in this particular business. I'm not sure the CSD tagging was done in good faith, considering anyone in the field would certainly be familiar with Cadence. Cheers! Henrik 23:27, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

Re: Pownetwork deletion

Hello Henrik,

It's me Guardiangirl777. Thank you for responding to my help discussion promptly. However, I still have some complaints. There not at you at all and I may be at the wrong place to discuss this. The issues I have is that the codes and reasons are kind of vauge, but thank you for clearing it up a bit though. My other issue is that three different people have acted after I put up this page. One person deleted the page, another deleted my talk discussion page on it, and then you responded to my Wikipedia help page entry. I wish that it was only one administrator to one site, not three. That's all I feel that I need to address. Thank you.

Sincerely

User:Guardiangirl777 08:02, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

Hello Guardiangirl777! Not at all, I'm happy to try to help. Wikipedia is a large site, edited and administrated almost entirely by thousands of volunteers. So unfortunately it can seem a bit schizophrenic at times. :) One thing to remember is that no deletion is final, and articles can be recreated. Are there any newspaper articles on Pownetwork? Any third party mentions by reliable sources? Anything like that would be enough to establish that the site is notable enough that it should have a wikipedia article. Searching thegoogle archives seem to get a few hits, so there might be hope to be able to create a referenced article. You can start by recreating the page in your userspace, at User:Guardiangirl777/Pownetwork.com which will allow you to work on it in peace. I can take a look at it once you've done that and give further suggestions. Cheers! Henrik 08:00, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

Are you an admin? I hope so. Perhaps you could assist with the page re-organization in progress. You have blanked the shoal article. The Shoal article is now lost as far as i can tell. Please replace it under shoal. It is the history page from landform (bar) that needs to be moved to the shoal page. thank you for your help. Cuvette 18:54, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

The good thing about a wiki is that it is very hard to permanently lose stuff :-) I'm not an admin, but I bothered one on IRC. I think the move should be complete now. Henrik 18:59, 29 June 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for your quick reaction. Shoal article seems fine now and i have fixed all the double ridirects. Cuvette 19:03, 29 June 2007 (UTC)
Great! I restored a few changes that seems to have been lost in the move. Next time, it might be easier to ask directly on requested moves, especially if admin privileges are needed. Henrik 19:10, 29 June 2007 (UTC)

Thanks

Thanks for fixing the Opus Dei page. Appreciate it. :-) Walter Ching 01:02, 30 June 2007 (UTC)

Thanks Henrik. The <ref name="foo"> ...</ref> works like a charm. Exactly what I needed. Jeremywosborne 18:56, 30 June 2007 (UTC) (edit. That us funny. Forgot to wrap the code brackets around it orginally, and didn't close the ref tag. :) )

hehe. I do that all the time too, luckily I try to use the preview button most of the time so I don't get too many embarrassing edits. :) Anyway, I'm glad I could help. Henrik 19:21, 30 June 2007 (UTC)

live-edit-counter script

There seem to be several problems with this script (User:Henrik/js/live-edit-counter.js). First, the number in the userbox will only appear for people with this script installed; other users will just see the original userbox. (This should probably be made clear on your description of the script.) Second, you haven't checked to see if the userpage visited actually has this userbox on; if it doesn't, the script will generate an error. (This applies to any userpage you visit; for instance, if a user with the script visits my userpage, which has no userboxes, they'll get a JavaScript error.) You could fix this by checking for the existence of the IDs before you send an edit-count request. Third, you've put the link back to the script inside a pre, so it won't have any effect; you probably want to move it outside the pre. Finally, it's normally a good idea to put Category:Wikipedia scripts at the bottom of a user script, to help keep track of them. Thanks! --ais523 16:32, 3 July 2007 (UTC)

To try to answer the issues in order. 1) the description page does say "All users who haven't installed the javascript and non-logged in users will see the plain old counter", but perhaps it can be made clearer. 2) The javascript error should be fixed now, it was a bit of laziness on my part. Thanks for pointing it out. 3) Yes, on the page for the script the installation notes are inside the pre, that is intentional (I was hoping any users of this particular silliness would copy from the page itself rather than the source). Or am I missing something? 4) Ah, I didn't know about that category. I'll add it promptly. Thank you. (And I hope I can be forgiven for adding this particular silliness to the user script page *grin*) Henrik 16:44, 3 July 2007 (UTC)

Well, considering how much hard work that has obviously gone into Nuclear weapons and Israel, fixing a few typos here and there doesn't seem like much work. You'd be an excellent role model for wikipedia editors, even with a few typos. :-) Henrik 14:09, 5 July 2007 (UTC)

thanks,

shas 13:08, 6 July 2007 (UTC)

It may be, it depends on the review. In depth, third party, reviews are probably relevant, as are awards by any third parties. If it is just a description on a download site, it is somewhat questionable. Henrik 13:17, 6 July 2007 (UTC)
Well, the page got deleted by User:Y. Oh well.. I'm asking him if there's any chance I can have more time. (and I thought that I'd made it better, haha) shas 14:28, 6 July 2007 (UTC)

AfC: Eddie Raven

Hello, Henrik. You recently closed an AfC request for an article on Eddie Raven. (Current link; Archive link) You declined it as not notable, but there is a lot of notability asserted in the article -- a "string of top ten hits for RCA" alone would be notable, based on WP:MUSIC guidelines. I'm curious why you thought this wasn't notable. Powers T 13:14, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

Oops, I used the wrong template! An article about him already exists at Eddy Raven, so {{afc exists}} is the template I should have used. *whacks himself with a trout* Thanks for letting me know, I've corrected the decline reason on the entry now. Henrik 13:26, 10 July 2007 (UTC)
Ah, no need for the trout; I was just curious. =) Powers T 13:49, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

AFC Backlog Drive!

WikiProject Articles for creation Backlog Elimination Drive

WikiProject AFC is holding a one month long assessment drive!
The goal of this drive is to eliminate the backlog of unreviewed articles. The drive is running from July 15, 2007 – August 15, 2007.

Awards to be won range from delicacies such as the WikiCookie to barnstars.
There is a backlog of more than one year, so start reviewing articles! Visit the drive's page and help out!

This drive was organized by GrooveDog in an attempt to terminate that nasty backlog.

I've had that thought too. Yes, a todo list would be helpful - I'll create it add some initial thoughts to it tonight, unless you beat me to it. Henrik 12:40, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

Re: Google Search script

Hi Henrik,

I like your script a lot, but I think it would look even better with some button removal. Personally, I need two functions in that area: the ability to go to a wikipedia article directly and the ability to do a wikipedia.org restricted google search for a topic.

One modification possibility is to leave the search bar as default appearance, but have the Search button do a google search with wikipedia.org domain.

Alternatively, using your script that displays both wikipedia and google searches, I think it would be cleaner to remove all three buttons: Go, Search and Google Search. Then I can just hit enter, like I already do.

I'm happy to do this myself, but I don't know where to start. Thanks!

WikiProject Articles for creation

WikiProject Articles for creation Backlog Elimination Drive News!

We are one week in to the drive, and it's already going fantastic. Numerous days of backlogs have been tackled, with hundreds of articles having been reviewed. We do, however, have some news!

First off, a HUGE congratulations to everyone participating so far. I understand some members are inactive due to vacation, but we are still making great progress.

Secondly, make sure that before you go off and review old submissions, that you review all submissions for the present day, and the day before, so that we aren't actually making a bigger backlog, by letting submissions get archived while we're checking stuff from 2006.

Third, remember to update your running total, on the drive page. Honesty is the best policy, so if you lie about the number of articles you've reviewed, we'll all make angry faces while looking at your userpage.

And, last, if you have any questions about the drive, feel free to ask me, or any other members of the project.

Great job, everyone! We're going to get that backlog!

AFC News

WikiProject Articles for creation Backlog Elimination Drive News!

We are nine days away from the end of the drive, and it's been fantastic! Many, many, many days of backlog have been tackled, and over 1500 articles reviewed!

To start off, a HUGE THANKS to everyone who helped out with the coordination of the drive, and actually fighting the backlog in the drive itself. Everyone's done a great job helping out, no matter how many articles you've reviewed/

Remember to update your running total, on the drive page. This is the ONLY way that I will be able to give out awards appropriately.

Lastly, I will be giving out awards on August 16th. Anyone who could help me, that would be fantastic. Contact me on my talk page if you'd like to volunteer.

Great job, everyone! This Drive has been fantastic, and I'm sure that some members of the Project have definitely made friends by collaborating on the talk pages. Thanks,
GrooveDog

AFC script

Hiho. I just installed your AFC script, and must say it is really useful (although it bugs every now and then). Thanks! Could you please add {{afc blp}}, a new template, to your script? That would be greatly appreciated. Melsaran 10:24, 9 August 2007 (UTC)

Done! Thanks for the suggestion! Reload your cache to get the new version. If it bugs out, could you describe exactly how it fails (and how to reproduce the problem), giving me a chance to fix it? Cheers! henriktalk 10:48, 9 August 2007 (UTC)

Just to add to this, my congratulations on a superb script- infintly easier to use. I don't know if this is possible, but could you have a setting, so the edit summary could mention the AFC Backlog Drive? Cheers Theone00 21:04, 10 August 2007 (UTC)

Thanks. I'm not sure that's useful for the long run, considering backlog drive is supposed to end in a few days. But I'll think of a way of letting users easily customize the edit henriktalk 20:34, 12 August 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for this- have just realised how little there still is of the drive...Theone00 10:11, 13 August 2007 (UTC)
Yay! - A new accept button! So many buttons! But seriously, good on you for the hard work you've put in with the afc scripts and afc in general! --Bennyboyz3000 10:18, 14 August 2007 (UTC)
Thanks! It felt a little wrong that the script couldn't do accepts earlier, since creating articles is what the project is really about. :) henriktalk 11:08, 14 August 2007 (UTC)
Have been looking over your script; just an idea, but could you replace

'&amfind='+escape("==(.*)==")+ '&amreplace='+escape('$0\n{{subst:afc top|'+action+'}}'
with
'&amfind='+escape("==(.*)==")+ '&amreplace='+escape('$0\n{{subst:afc r|'+action+'}}'
as I think the 'afc r' template is prefered to the afc top template, per the note on here. Thanks Theone00 16:48, 17 August 2007 (UTC)

On the vasa article

Thank you for your most polite reply on the Vasa dispute. You are correct indeed in that this is very small thing that has become much larger than necessary. Being a bit pointy and easily provocated are some of my less good wikipedia-traits.

But I do indeed feel that this small factoid is noteworthy and improves the article. Although i do agree i could not find the perfect spot for it in the article, and i did not want to add in a trivia section to interfere with your work on the article (we know how trivia sections can be the way to open floodgates).

I am very happy to have it temporarily removed on the basis that it is worked back into the article when appropriate context is found. But currently i feel from the edit history that there is no intention of putting the factoid in any shape or form back into the article, as there seems to indeed be room for pictures of mickey-mouse toys relating to the wreck, but remarks to this fact are plainly reverted within five minutes although i am not the only user who has requested this addition to the article. I did not take the time to work out that correct context because my knowledge of the vasa wreck is limited to that of tv-episodes of "hermans historia". Gillis 12:51, 15 August 2007 (UTC)

I'm glad you seem to have gotten the spirit the message was intended in. :) For what it's worth, I do think there is a place for the factoid in an expanded recovery section (or if it gets broken out into a separate article). Probably not a paragraphs worth, but a sentence or two. henriktalk 13:05, 15 August 2007 (UTC)

AFC Drive - Last Day!

As I write this message, we officially have 2 hours left before the end of the drive. Prizes will be awarded tomorrow, so don't worry, I haven't forgotten. It's been a great drive, with tons of work accomplished. Thanks, everyone. GrooveDog GrooveBot 21:11, 15 August 2007 (UTC) Automaticlly delivered by GrooveBot at 21:11, 15 August 2007 (UTC)

Zetterström nozzle

There's pic of the fountain nozzle at Image:Zetterström nozzle1.jpg. It would probably be a bit better if it was cropped to a smaller size with focus on just the nozzle, but since I killed my beloved MacBook, I really don't have the proper tools to do it. If you feel like helping out, please do.

Peter Isotalo 12:20, 22 August 2007 (UTC)

Many thanks! Yep, I'll crop it and reupload it. The Vasa article is really starting to shape up now with the recent additions. Should we go for a peer review soon? I've been a bit to busy lately, but I hope to do some real additions - especially about the recovery - after the weekend. henriktalk 06:29, 23 August 2007 (UTC)

You can upload the cropped pic to the same filename as the original if you want. The current pic has fairly limited use in article space and the original file will still be left in the upload history for anyone who wishes to fiddle with it.

I think a peer review is getting quite close indeed. What we need to do is to update "Construction", embellish "Inquest" with a little more detail and episodes from court (Hocker paints a very piquante story of personal and political drama in Vasa I) and add a proper sub-section on all the finds. I think we're both probably working on about the same content right now (the recovery), but that's just good, because that way one will probably notice what the other one has missed. To finish off before we send the article off to PR we need to update "Causes of sinking", which also needs bolstering with a few citations.

Live Userbox

Just wondering, you said in your subpage that you need Javascript to run the userbox as live, can you link me to that?

Also, I don't understand how the userbox can be live if one of the parameters is to insert your edit number.

A bit more explanation on this one is needed in my head, methinks :P Cheers, SteelersFan UK06 14:39, 3 September 2007 (UTC)

You don't replace "<edits>" with a number, you leave it as that and it updates live. Cabe6403 15:43, 3 September 2007 (UTC)
aaah ok, i just got confused because the page reads "it accepts the same parameters and should be used in the same way" - i thought you had to put in the numbers >_<. Never mind me then! --SteelersFan UK06 16:07, 3 September 2007 (UTC)
Well, the advantage of putting in a number there is that people without the javascript installed will see that number. So I use it to give an approximate edit count, and have the live updated number mostly for my own amusement. It'll still look okay for you, even if you don't insert a number - but it may look strange for others. I hope this clarifies things. henriktalk 06:08, 4 September 2007 (UTC)

Monobook

I can't seem to do it. Can you do it?. ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Talk"? 15:48, 18 September 2007 (UTC)

Or give me the exact text I need to put in it to make it work ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Talk"? 15:52, 18 September 2007 (UTC)

That might be a better idea. :) But it actually looks correct now. Have you reloaded your cache (Ctrl-reload in most browsers) since you changed the monobook.js? Which browser do you use? henriktalk 15:53, 18 September 2007 (UTC)

I havent reloaded this. I'm not even aware of what browser I use -I noticed this befire in my preferences how do I do this? -sorry to bother you ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Talk"? 15:55, 18 September 2007 (UTC)

Control and f5 done thanks!!!! Hey is there anyway I can change the font of the article in my own settings or the frame of the page? ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Talk"? 15:59, 18 September 2007 (UTC)

Good! I'm glad you got it working, there's no bother at all - I'm happy to help.
Yes, you can change the font by editing your monobook.css. Help:User_style has the info, but it requires some understanding of CSS. If you can describe exactly what you want changed I could try to help (though I need to run out now, so it might be a few hours). PS. You might want to change your password anyway, since anyone reading this may start to test "obvious" passwords on your account. :) henriktalk 16:07, 18 September 2007 (UTC)

It looks extremely complex. Could you suggest someone who is very familiar with this. For me if I could alter the font of the encyclopedia in my monobook and the title of the article it would make it a different site. Thanks ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Talk"? 19:22, 18 September 2007 (UTC)

AFC script

Recently I'm having problems with the script. When I choose accept, my browser opens a screen that asks for a title and then goes on to an article space page to put the article. All I want is just put in the accept template and take care of the article myself. Is there a way to avoid the script behaving like this? - Mgm|(talk) 09:41, 22 September 2007 (UTC)

Not currently, but I can add another "manual accept" template which doesn't do that. I'll pop by with a message when that is done.henriktalk 21:32, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

Re: Thanks

You're welcome. F-402 20:46, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

No, it's not my first time on Wikipedia. I've done this whole thing before. I'm sorry I got angry towards you. Just seeing the template hit me the wrong way until I noticed your real words at the end of it. But there's no harm in it. You were just trying to be helpful to who you thought was a newcomer. I edited the eric murphy page to correct the information, as it was INCORRECT. I am an avid watch of entourage. I know everything about it. afc helper script

Any chance of adding {{subst:afc bio}} to the script? So many of the submissions are biographies, but not blp issues, and yet the general {{subst:afc nn}} template is not specific enough for most submitters to really dig into the WP:BIO part. I'd love to see both the bio, and {{subst:afc not}} added, as I use those every single day by hand, lol. P.S. I just love this script! It is amazingly helpful! Thanks for making it. ArielGold 05:25, 2 October 2007 (UTC)

Done, bypass your browsers cache and you should see the updated version! Thank you for your kind comments about my humble script, I'm glad it is useful :-) henriktalk 09:41, 2 October 2007 (UTC)
Omigosh that was so fast! You rock, and seriously I can't tell you how helpful this script is, and I'm sure I'm not alone in my appreciation! Thank you for such a fast addition! ArielGold 09:44, 2 October 2007 (UTC)
