WikiCup 2012 October newsletterThe 2012 WikiCup has come to a close; congratulations to Cwmhiraeth (submissions), our 2012 champion! Cwmhiraeth joins our exclusive club of previous winners: Dreamafter (2007), jj137 (2008), Durova (2009), Sturmvogel 66 (2010) and Hurricanehink (2011). Our final standings were as follows:
Prizes for first, second, third and fourth will be awarded, as will prizes for all those who reached the final eight. Every participant who scored in the competition will receive a ribbon of participation. In addition to the prizes based on placement, the following special prizes will be awarded based on high performance in particular areas of content creation. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, the prize is awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round.
Awards will be handed out in the coming days; please bear with us! This year's competition also saw fantastic contributions in all rounds, from newer Wikipedians contributing their first good or featured articles, right up to highly experienced Wikipedians chasing high scores and contributing to topics outside of their usual comfort zones. It would be impossible to name all of the participants who have achieved things to be proud of, but well done to all of you, and thanks! Wikipedia has certainly benefited from the work of this year's WikiCup participants. Next year's WikiCup will begin in January. Currently, discussions and polls are open, and all contributions are welcome. You can also sign up for next year's competition. There will be no further newsletters this year, although brief notes may be sent out in December to remind everyone about the upcoming competition. It's been a pleasure to work with you all, and we hope to see you all in January! J Milburn (talk • email) and The ed17 (talk • email) 00:27, 1 November 2012 (UTC) HiSent you an email... We noticed though that when you edited Massey Poyntz, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Tiverton (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject. The DYK project (nominate) 08:01, 14 November 2012 (UTC) I've begun the GA review here. I've not finished yet, but there are a few points to be going on with. Looking good, though. Zia Khan 11:38, 15 November 2012 (UTC)
Hi, any chance you could have your comments on Wikipedia:Featured list candidates/List of international cricket five-wicket hauls by Saqlain Mushtaq/archive1? Regards, Zia Khan 21:07, 17 November 2012 (UTC) GilliganHow dare you spot my incredibly sloppy mistakes in Gilligan! No-one was supposed to notice them! On a serious note, thanks for the review and I think I've got everything. On another matter, is it my imagination, or is WP:CRIC slowly dying a death? People seem to have either left completely or moved on to other stuff, and I think you could count active cricket writers on the fingers of one hand. A lot of the effort now seems to come via IPL stuff, and a few editors writing about Indian cricket, but they don't seem to have much to do with the main project, which is a shame as some of them are rather good. Sarastro1 (talk) 16:41, 18 November 2012 (UTC) Screwed up DYK date requestI see you have promoted Glenn Robinson III into the wrong prep area for its date request. Can you undo this promotion.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 14:51, 21 November 2012 (UTC) BarnstarThanks for that one. I think. I've never seen it before! I see you've started on Lionel Palairet. I'm in similar territory myself with MacLaren, and when I can find them I've several books on the 1902 series which may have bits on him and I'll pass them on. (And yes, I do spy on your sandboxes from time to time!) Sarastro1 (talk) 17:10, 21 November 2012 (UTC)

Do please enable the edit-counting tools to allow edtors to quickly get a picture of your experience. While your edit logs on Wikipedia are publicly visible, some of the tools which can be used to aggregate your edit counts will not run unless you opt-in to allow tracking of edits per month and which articles you edit most frequently. It is recommended that you opt-in to allow such aggregation by creating a page here (to allow aggregation on English Wikipedia) or here (to allow aggregation on all Wikimedia projects). After your RFA, or at any other time you may opt back out again by placing {{delete}} on the page you created. Thanks and best of luck. I have changed the code here because I think you just copied it from the edit counter and did not really want the page deleted. If you really do want it deleted, just let me know, or replace the content with {{delete}}. Sorry to bother you. Hey, Harrias Just a reminder about the GA review for 1920 Buffalo All-Americans season. I noticed you've been occupied with the admin. I thought I'd drop by and give you a reminder in case you forgot about it. Good luck with the admin nomination! Houston Texans Pro Bowlers commentsSorry about the wait, I'll get to it immediately. Thank youThank you very much for the note and the kind words. I think probably the process, and the letter of the law, have been applied correctly and that any appeal would be bound to fail, however irritating that may be. I think it might also put WP:CRIC's friendly admins – of which I see that you are now one: congrats – in a difficult position. So I wouldn't advocate that. You're right to wish that all of this stuff was behind us, but while people who claim to have retired keep returning, it may not be easy. Johnlp (talk) 22:12, 9 December 2012 (UTC) PalairetRooting through my (scarily large collection of) books on 1902, I found a few fragments. (To be honest, he strikes me as one of the odder selections that series. My impression is that he was very much a hard wicket specialist, yet that was one of the wetter summers ever. Why pick a stylist for a brute of a pitch? There were plenty of gritty openers that may have prospered; surely even those selectors must have seen he needed a dry wicket to do well?)
I assume you are heading for GA with this one? (I think it's also time for another Somerset FA, hint hint.) Belated congratulations on becoming an admin, by the way. Enjoy your new magical powers! Sarastro1 (talk) 19:06, 10 December 2012 (UTC)
Fry stuff sent, a little later than planned, but never mind. If you use it, the citation is in the bibliography of Wilfred Rhodes. And if no-one gets to reviewing Palairet in the next day or so, I think I'll do it myself. Sarastro1 (talk) 23:29, 17 December 2012 (UTC) Harrias, could you please stop by and see whether the stability issue with one of the articles has worked out to your satisfaction? Many thanks. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 08:05, 16 December 2012 (UTC) ReplyFirst, see the reply I have made to User:Jhall1 who is at least worth replying to. Your comments are beneath contempt. I can think of nothing pettier than someone who insists on his right to sole management of a talk page despite the fact that it contains offensive material that, as verified by User:Black Kite, constitutes a serious breach of site directives (WP:BAN, WP:PA and others). Where is the good faith from Johnlp towards Jim Hardie and myself, not to mention all the other people like AA, TRM, Andrew Nixon, Nev1, Dweller, etc. who have been harrassed by the banned editor? Okay, like Jhall1, you don't know about the e-mails which Johnlp has not mentioned. As for respectability, how can anyone respect a wannabe admin who, on the one hand, insists on "proper channels", and then, when it suits you, encourages Johnlp to defy the site's guidelines because of his "right" to maintain malicious, vindictive content on his precious talk page? What "right" is that? A moral one, perhaps? Now perhaps you'd like to ask Johnlp about those e-mails and do some serious study of the site's directives (as against mere policies and guidelines) so that you can be of some use to editors who actually need help rather than those who are standing by their "rights". ----Jack | talk page 14:05, 16 December 2012 (UTC) ThanksThank you very much for your advice at my talk page.--Pratyya (have a chat?) 10:35, 19 December 2012 (UTC) FLCHi sir, I'm your big fan seeing your contributions. J Milburn 19:22, 30 December 2012 (UTC) Opinion requiredAs I'm rather stuck inside for New Year, I was pottering with Andy Ganteaume's article which I found while following your example and looking at cricket articles needing some TLC. I've added quite a bit, but was wondering if you thought it was worth a shot at GA? The only thing stopping me is that he wrote an autobiography a few years ago which I can't help thinking should be used for this article to be a GA, and there is no way I am forking out for that one! Happy New Year, and I hope your evening is better than mine! Sarastro1 (talk) 19:53, 31 December 2012 (UTC)
