The general thing is to get as much about 1883 and close events out of the main article into the separate article - it was getting to big and too many punters were getting into i want to add amazing facts syndrome - without a cite or RS in sight. The 3rd article was to be (if it gets there - the post 83 volcanism).

Gold star editors

A team of people hand-checked five thousand articles for vandalism for the Schools Wikipedia, after they have been passed for quality. The check process started with taking the two most reliable editors a month apart and comparing the diffs. This showed up vandalism etc in versions saved by different editors and some (even among admins) were much more reliable than others in fixing all problems with an article whenever they edited. Realising this speeded up the process and we started swapping names of the really reliable editors. You were one of them. You know that page you linked me to with the FAQs may seem obvious to you, but nowhere in the top section does it say to edit the interwiki links in the other language. That's what I could not get. It seems obvious after the fact, but I bet the majority of Wikipedia editors edit in only one language, especially en-wiki editors. It would have been easier, in my opinion, to just say go change the links on the other language Wikipedias. It gets to be frustrating being linked to policy pages or essays that don't clearly state something, like that some of the bad links may be on other language Wikipedias. ID erase request

I view page histories as self-contained - you should be able to gather all the information about the edits from just looking at the page history, without having to use article talk pages or other random talk pages. I granted the last request because (IIRC) the edits were reverted straight away by the same IP address and it wasn't a violation of attribution licenses. I wouldn't do the deletions ... and I'd be very hesitant to ask for them publicly because of the Streisand effect. Some people might see the request for IP deletion and take it as an insentive to publicise the IP address as widely as possible ... I know it's wrong and it's harassment, but there are some very shady characters lurking around Wikipedia. However i'll point you to Wikipedia:Requests for administrator attention and probably the admin's noticeboard might be the best place to get a third opinion about expunging the IP address from the history. If you frequently log out like that, maybe make your logged in interface distinctive by choosing a different skin or add some gadgets so that you can immediately tell when you're logged out. I assume there is no warning message that comes up before saving because it is Wikipedia's policy to put the minimum number of obstacles in the way of contributors? Yes, I was on the phone to EW at the time and he was telling me what to do, concerning those (yes two) edits. Apparently the original author in this sentence had used Cricket Ball not Tomato to illustrate the argument, both being round and red objects. History merge and rename needed

User:Fred Reid

I had Fred Reid on my watchlist as there had been several attempts to create an article on an amateur squash player by that name. I see that there is apparently someone else by that name and that you moved the article into userspace, but I can't seem to verify that there is any such user by checking the logs. I'm cleaning up very old accounts, registered before the changeover to a MediaWiki database in January 2002. Any account registered before that time, then subsequently abandoned, didn't exist in the database even if it had contributions associated with it. For example, see User:Mike Dill. I'm restoring their user pages and creating accounts for them so that their usernames can't be taken over by other people, either well-intentioned new users or vandals - I have found a few cases where vandals have taken over old usernames.
Unfortunately, the only evidence there is for a user named Fred Reid existing is this edit to the Wikipedians page; No edits by him survive, even on his contribs page on the Nostalgia Wikipedia. This doesn't mean that he made no edits at all - all his edits might have been wiped out in the early days (see Wikipedia:Usemod article histories for more info on that). But , to be honest, I'm a little suspicious about the user's existence because of the tone of the user page, and the fact that with most old users, at least one edit from them usually survives. One reason that no edits survived in this case could be that he only edited frequently edited pages.
An account creation doesn't appear in the logs for him that are linked from his contribs page because I created his account - it appears in these logs though. I'm creating accounts for these old users with my admin account, partly to bypass the normal account creation limit of six accounts per day, and partly because I can bypass the captcha as an admin - I can't use captchas because I'm blind, as it says on my user page. I didn't realise that it would make the logs more confusing - this is probably a bug that needs to be fixed.

I'm sorry I reported you as an admin vandal. It looked like you were just making a mess of things. Hmmm even just the traffic that is obvious normal run of the mill stuff is hard to comprehend some of it - then there are the very obvious ip or new user vndl hits - they show out so much better with the added gadget watching thingoes these days - but I do not think I will do that in a hurry again - sugar would not be enough for me - in the old days it might have been a mars bar and a coke - but hell I'd need a mix of a number of ingredients extra these days - I'd hate to be a genuine human system monitor in larger systems - like defence intelligence thingoes - youd have to have computer assisted filter thingoes to help - otherwise youd lose something quick i think :( SatuSuro 12:09, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

Could you please talk me through archiving talk pages?

I found an old archive of Talk:Christopher Columbus (which is now at archive 1), noticed it hadn't been linked from anywhere, and then started digging. It turns out that it used to be linked from the Christopher Columbus talk page, but the link had been removed, along with 135KB of talk page text, in this edit. There was also a second unlinked talk archive. Also complicating the matter of renumbering the archives was that some of the page history was in archives 2 and 4 (now 4 and 6), thus if I renumbered them, the page history trail could become very difficult to follow.
First, I merged the page historie so all the content edits could be at Talk:Christopher Columbus. I moved Talk:Christopher Columbus to Talk:Christopher Columbus/Archive 4, which is where the first batch of history was located. I then merged all the content edits from archive 4 (all those before it was archived). I then moved it to archive 2, suppressing the redirect, then merged all the content edits from archive 2. All the content edits were then in the one place, so I moved everything back to Talk:Christopher Columbus, suppressing the redirect.
Then I renumbered the archives. All archive numbers from 1 to 5 had to be changed to be from 3 to 7. I undeleted all the edits at Talk:Christopher Columbus/Archive 4 and moved them to Talk:Christopher Columbus/Archive 6, with the redirect suppressed. Then I undeleted the old edits from archive 2 and moved them to archive 4, also with the redirect suppressed. After that, I moved the remaining numbered archives, all with redirects suppressed: archive 5 moved to 7, archive 3 moved to 5, then archive 1 moved to 3. I then moved Talk:Christopher Columbus/Archived talk to archive 1 and Talk:Christopher Columbus/Archived talk 2 to archive 2, this time leaving redirects from the old titles, since they are historically significant and are linked from other pages.
I've done archive renumbering before, like at Talk:Al-Qaeda. The principle of renumbering talk archives is to start by moving the highest archive number first, and to always suppress redirects, to make the page moves go more smoothly (everything is in the move log, so there are no problems with the GFDL). I've never done a combination of talk page archive renumbering and history merging before the Columbus incident, and, to be frank, I hope I never have to do a similar operation again. I wanted to mention that the AP obit link for the Miriam Makeba page, listed as reference #9, is actually a dead link. The New York Times and other newspapers use these third party links as enduring archive links, which is why I have been using them too. However, I understand the policies and reasoning you are citing.
