Administrators' newsletter – September 2023

News and updates for administrators from the past month (August 2023).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, TFAs will be automatically semi-protected the day before it is on the main page and through the day after.
  • A discussion at WP:VPP about revision deletion and oversight for dead names found that [s]ysops can choose to use revdel if, in their view, it's the right tool for this situation, and they need not default to oversight. But oversight could well be right where there's a particularly high risk to the person. Use your judgment.

Technical news

Arbitration

  • The SmallCat dispute case has closed. As part of the final decision, editors participating in XfD have been reminded to be careful about forming local consensus which may or may not reflect the broader community consensus. Regular closers of XfD forums were also encouraged to note when broader community discussion, or changes to policies and guidelines, would be helpful.

Miscellaneous

  • Tech tip: The "Browse history interactively" banner shown at the top of Special:Diff can be used to easily look through a history, assemble composite diffs, or find out what archive something wound up in.

On 1 September 2023, In the news was updated with an item that involved the article 2023 Johannesburg building fire, which you updated. If you know of another recently created or updated article suitable for inclusion in ITN, please suggest it on the candidates page. Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 17:32, 1 September 2023 (UTC)

Hello,

Thank you for your edits to the Rebecca Sparling article! Very helpful.

I saw you placed an External link warning tag for this article. I read the Wiki page on External links but I'm still confused.

What is the issue with the external links used in this article? I only used an external link when the Wikipedia page for that topic had a lot of warnings at the top of the page, so they were potentially unreliable Wikis and I didn't want to link to them. How can I fix the issue?

Once it's fixed, can you please remove the tag?

Thank you! Jdsmith33 (talk) 21:59, 2 September 2023 (UTC)

Hi Jdsmith33. Our Manual of Style doesn't allow external links in the body of the article (WP:ELNO), only links to other Wikipedia articles. Hyperlinks in the Rebecca Sparling article to outside websites (American Malleable Iron handbook, Western Machinery and Steel World, Non Destructive Testing, American Society for Testing Materials, ASM International, etc.) need to removed. We usually link to the Wikipedia articles even if they have warnings at the top of the page. gobonobo + c 22:27, 2 September 2023 (UTC)
Okay thank you! I just edited it and moved all external links to the External links heading. I may go back and add a few links to Wikipedia pages with warnings. Let me know if it looks okay now? Jdsmith33 (talk) 22:43, 2 September 2023 (UTC)
@Jdsmith33 Looks good. Thank you. I've removed the warning template. gobonobo + c 22:46, 2 September 2023 (UTC)
Yay, thank you! Finished all my edits. Just turned a couple external links into citations and a couple into Wikipedia page links. Jdsmith33 (talk) 23:00, 2 September 2023 (UTC)

Featuring your work on Wikipedia's front page: DYKs

Thank you for your recent articles, including Abortion in North Korea, which I read with interest. When you create an extensive and well referenced article, you may want to have it featured on Wikipedia's main page in the Did You Know section. Articles included there will be read by thousands of our viewers. To do so, add your article to the list at T:TDYK. This can be also done through this helpful user script: User:SD0001/DYK-helper. WikiCup 2023 September newsletter

The fourth round of the competition has finished, with anyone scoring less than 673 points being eliminated. It was a high scoring round with all but one of the contestants who progressed to the final having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were

  • New York (state) Epicgenius, with 2173 points topping the scores, gained mainly from a featured article, 38 good articles and 9 DYKs. He was followed by
  • Sammi Brie, with 1575 points, gained mainly from a featured article, 28 good articles and 50 good article reviews. Close behind was
  • Thebiguglyalien, with 1535 points mainly gained from a featured article, 15 good articles, 26 good article reviews and lots of bonus points.

Between them during round 4, contestants achieved 12 featured articles, 3 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 126 good articles, 46 DYK entries, 14 ITN entries, 67 featured article candidate reviews and 147 good article reviews. Congratulations to our eight finalists and all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them and within 24 hours of the end of the final. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.

I will be standing down as a judge after the end of the contest. I think the Cup encourages productive editors to improve their contributions to Wikipedia and I hope that someone else will step up to take over the running of the Cup. Sturmvogel 66 (talk), and Cwmhiraeth (talk)

DYK for Nancy Brown (columnist)

On 11 September 2023, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Nancy Brown (columnist), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that advice columnist Nancy Brown crowdfunded the reforestation of a clearcut during the Great Depression? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Nancy Brown (columnist). You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Nancy Brown (columnist)), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

New page reviewer granted

Hi Gobonobo. Your account has been added to the "New page reviewers" user group. Please check back at the permissions page in case your user right is time-limited or probationary. This user group allows you to review new pages through the Curation system and mark them as patrolled, tag them for maintenance issues, or nominate them for deletion. The list of articles awaiting review is located at the New Pages Feed. New page reviewing is vital to maintaining the integrity of the encyclopedia. If you have not already done so, you must read the tutorial at New Pages Review, the linked guides and essays, and fully understand the deletion policy. If you need any help or want to discuss the process, you are welcome to use the new page reviewer talk page or ask via the NPP Discord. In addition, please remember:

  • Be nice to new editors. They are usually not aware that they are doing anything wrong. Do make use of the message feature when tagging pages for maintenance so that they are aware.
  • You will frequently be asked by users to explain why their page is being deleted. Please be formal and polite in your approach to them – even if they are not.
  • If you are not sure what to do with a page, don't review it – just leave it for another reviewer.
  • Accuracy is more important than speed. Take your time to patrol each page, including checking for copyright violations using Earwig's copyright violation detector, checking for duplicate articles, and evaluating sources (both in the article, and if needed, via a Google search) for compliance with the general notability guideline.
  • Please review some of our flowcharts (1, 2) to help ensure you don't forget any steps.
  • Use the message feature to communicate with article creators and offer advice as much as possible.

The reviewer right does not change your status or how you can edit articles. If you no longer want this user right, you also may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. In cases of abuse or persistent inaccuracy of reviewing, or long-term inactivity, the right may be withdrawn at administrator discretion. If you can read any languages other than English, please add yourself to the list of new page reviewers with language proficiencies. — Ingenuity (talk • contribs) 12:42, 15 September 2023 (UTC)

New pages patrol newsletter

Hello Gobonobo,

New Page Review article queue, March to September 2023

Backlog update: At the time of this message, there are 11,300 articles and 15,600 redirects awaiting review. This is the highest backlog in a long time. Please help out by doing additional reviews!

October backlog elimination drive: A one-month backlog drive for October will start in one week! Barnstars will be awarded based on the number of articles and redirects patrolled. Articles will earn 4x as many points compared to redirects. You can sign up here.

PageTriage code upgrades: Upgrades to the PageTriage code, initiated by the NPP open letter in 2022 and actioned by the WMF Moderator Tools Team in 2023, are ongoing. More information can be found here. As part of this work, the Special:NewPagesFeed now has a new version in beta! The update leaves the NewPagesFeed appearance and function mostly identical to the old one, but updates the underlying code, making it easier to maintain and helping make sure the extension is not decommissioned due to maintenance issues in the future. You can try out the new Special:NewPagesFeed here - it will replace the current version soon.

Notability tip: Professors can meet WP:PROF #1 by having their academic papers be widely cited by their peers. When reviewing professor articles, it is a good idea to find their Google Scholar or Scopus profile and take a look at their h-index and number of citations. As a very rough rule of thumb, for most fields, articles on people with a h-index of twenty or more, a first-authored paper with more than a thousand citations, or multiple papers each with more than a hundred citations are likely to be kept at AfD.

Reviewing tip: If you would like like a second opinion on your reviews or simply want another new page reviewer by your side when patrolling, we recommend pair reviewing! This is where two reviewers use Discord voice chat and screen sharing to communicate with each other while reviewing the same article simultaneously. This is a great way to learn and transfer knowledge.

Replaceable non-free use File:Emilie Gourd.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Emilie Gourd.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of non-free use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of non-free use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{Di-replaceable non-free use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable non-free use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification, per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

This bot DID NOT nominate any of your contributions for deletion; please refer to the history of each individual page for details. Thanks, FastilyBot (talk) 10:00, 3 October 2023 (UTC)

BOLA AHMED TINUBU (ADEKUNLE)?

From your response Bola Ahmed Adekunle Tinubu what was the last changes you made on the 07/08/2023 @ 13:03 UK TIME? Nigerians are not dumb. There was no history to check for as of 2009. Adekunle is not in his passport and Nigerians do not know the current president "Bola Ahmed Tinubu" as Adekunle.

Notice

The article Nazareth Hassan has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Lack of notability, and IP has made a WP:BLPREQUESTDELETE here

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. WikiProject assessment tags for talk pages

Thank you for your recent articles, including Abortion in North Korea, which I read with interest. When you create a new article, can you add the WikiProject assessment templates to the talk of that article? See the talk page of the article I mentioned for an example of what I mean. Usually it is very simple, you just add something like {{WikiProject Keyword}} to the article's talk, with keyword replaced by the associated WikiProject (ex. if it's a biography article, you would use WikiProject Biography; if it's a United States article, you would use WikiProject United States, and so on). You can also use a friendly script for that. You do not have to rate the article if you do not want to, others will do it eventually. Those templates are very useful, as they bring the articles to a WikiProject attention, and allow them to start tracking the articles through Wikipedia:Article alerts and other tools. For example, WikiProject Poland relies on such templates to generate listings such as Article Alerts, Popular Pages, Quality and Importance Matrix and the Cleanup Listing. Thanks to them, WikiProject members are more easily able to defend your work from deletion, or simply help try to improve it further. Feel free to ask me any questions if you'd like more information about using those talk page templates. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 06:38, 7 September 2023 (UTC)

Hi @Piotrus. Thank you. I usually add the templates right away, but I was doing the 100 wikidays challenge at the time and figured I'd loop back around and add the WikiProjects after. gobonobo + c 03:52, 8 October 2023 (UTC)

QUESTION: How and since when did Bola Ahmed Tinubu became known as "Adekunle"

The entire Nation has recently learnt that their president's name has changed so being from a well respected platform and and an editor since 2006, we want to know the basis of this change and who authorized it. Leave me a reply via.. OGWAGZ (talk) 03:03, 8 October 2023 (UTC)

Asian mysterious pangolin moved to draftspace

Thanks for your contributions to Asian mysterious pangolin. Unfortunately, I do not think it is ready for publishing at this time because it needs more sources to establish notability and mammal species articles require adoption by both IUCN and ASM's MDD, or significant acceptance by other similar secondary sources. Also redirecting this to [[Draft:Manis mysteria]; no need for multiple drafts. I have converted your article to a draft which you can improve, undisturbed for a while.

Please see more information at Help:Unreviewed new page. When the article is ready for publication, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page OR move the page back. UtherSRG (talk) 11:36, 10 October 2023 (UTC)

Political views of Javier Milei

Information icon Hello, I'm Cambalachero. I noticed that you recently removed all content from Political views of Javier Milei. Please do not do this. Blank pages are harmful to Wikipedia because they have a tendency to confuse readers. As a rule, if you discover a duplicate article, please redirect it to an appropriate existing page. If a page has been vandalised, please revert it to the last legitimate version. If you feel that the content of a page is inappropriate, please edit the page and replace it with appropriate content. If you believe there is no hope for the page, please see the deletion policy for how to proceed. If this was a mistake, don't worry; the removed content has been restored. If you wish to experiment, please use your sandbox. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thanks. Vandalism of the user Pedantic Aristotle

Hello, Gobonobo. The user Pedantic Aristotle is undoing his edits in this pages: Political views of Javier Milei and Political positions of Javier Milei. This user insists at all costs on imposing, without any consensus, an article that does not have any neutrality and that does not reflect the original article. Additionally, creating an article of this type seems totally unnecessary to me. The original article by Javier Milei already addresses his political views and positions in a complete and profound way. Also, how is it possible that this user has made 2 articles on the same topic? And if that were not enough, now it is massively deleting information from the article in La Libertad Avanza, the coalition of politician Javier Milei. This user is causing a lot of problems in Wikipedia. Piertosiri (talk) 15:13, 28 October 2023 (UTC)

Its ok if we disagree, but lets discuss in the Talk page, instead of edit war each other. Pedantic Aristotle (talk) 16:34, 28 October 2023 (UTC)
Also, to correct myself, i used the word vandalism incorrectly, what i meant was disruptive editing, apologies for any confusion. Pedantic Aristotle (talk) 16:45, 28 October 2023 (UTC)

You are invited to join the discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Political views of Javier Milei about which (if any) of the two articles should continue to exist. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 17:38, 28 October 2023 (UTC)

Hello Gobonobo:

WikiProject Articles for creation is holding a month long Backlog Drive!
The goal of this drive is to reduce the backlog of unreviewed drafts to less than 2 months outstanding reviews from the current 4+ months. Bonus points will be given for reviewing drafts that have been waiting more than 30 days. The drive is running from 1 November 2023 through 30 November 2023.

You may find Category:AfC pending submissions by age or other categories and sorting helpful.

Barnstars will be given out as awards at the end of the drive.

There is a backlog of over 1800 pages, so start reviewing drafts. We're looking forward to your help! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:24, 31 October 2023 (UTC)
