A barnstar for you

Thanks for your recent contributions! 66.87.0.15 (talk) 15:30, 3 April 2012 (UTC)
Seems random. Any reason? Ghmyrtle (talk) 14:09, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

Good evening Ghmyrtle. I hope you are well. I have a puzzle which MartinEvans and I thought you may be able to help with. I've given some details on the above page about Pen-y-Clawdd Court and listed it as a Grade I Listed building in Monmouthshire. But I now think the details I've quoted refer to another Pen-y-Clawdd Court. My doubts arise from, firstly, the fact that RCAHMW lists Pen-y-Clawdd Court as being in the parish of Llanvihangel Crucorney, which plainly the Court between Raglan and Monmouth isn't, and, secondly, because the description in RCAHMW, and the pictures from a link I've found here [[1]], don't look at all like the Pen-y-Clawdd Court I photographed a few weekends ago. But Newman's Monmouthshire only lists one Pen-y-Clawdd Court and his description "notable only for the nobly scaled red brick arch close up to the road" definitely does match the house I photographed, the pictures of which I was going to upload until I got cold feet.

So, I think there are actually two Pen-y-Clawdd Courts. But why does Newman not list the one near Abergavenny, which looks much more interesting and which I think is Grade I, but does list the one near Raglan which he acknowledges is only notable for its gate? Can it be that he's overlooked the more important of the two? I'd really appreciate any thoughts you may have. I understand that you may not be focusing on Monmouthpedia anymore, but this is more about getting the Monmouthshire Listed Buildings right. I have also asked Dr Blofeld as he's got a lot of local knowledge.

As an aside, the Chepstow page is looking fantastic. Best regards. KJP1 (talk) 19:37, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for your comments. I think I've found the answer - Newman lists the Grade I Penyclawdd Court under Llantilio Pertholey, rather than under Llanfihangel Crucorney. I'm not sure which side of the parish boundary it's on, but it's clearly the same place. On the OS map, the one near Raglan is called Pen-y-clawdd House, rather than Court. Does that make sense to you? Regards, Ghmyrtle (talk) 20:20, 4 April 2012 (UTC)
You're a genius! Page 356 and Page 469 of Newman show where I've gone wrong. Although he does call both Court so I hope my error can be forgiven. Now just need to unpick them, and create an article for the Llantilio Pertholey Court, unless the Doctor beats me to it! Many thanks. KJP1 (talk) 21:57, 4 April 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for sorting that mess out. Best regards. KJP1 (talk) 07:19, 6 April 2012 (UTC)

Oooo, you're back. Hope you had a good break. Well, I got three eggs and a bunny. No surprise really, because there's trio of chickens in the back garden and my wife was wearing her fluffy dressing gown again. Still, I avoided a full-on crucifixion. Does Horace Faith / "Black Pearl" mean anything to you? I could not decide whether to do an article on the song or the singer, and fell between two stools with not much material on either. Trust you are well.

Looks good to me, but, with my failing memory (age!) I can't really recall the song. Very nice few days in foreign parts, thank you, though I refuse to accept some of their bizarre practices - the cream slips off too easily.... Ghmyrtle (talk) 22:47, 13 April 2012 (UTC)

Night Train credits

You may be interested to know that my 1964 vinyl copy of Rhythm and Blues at "The Flamingo" by Georgie Fame and The Blue Flames, credits "Night Train" to Forrest-Washington-Simpkins (sorry if I already told you this about three years ago!) Martinevans123 (talk) 21:15, 16 April 2012 (UTC)

Yes - the same as on the James Brown record (shown in the article). BMI doesn't mention Simpkins at all, and other sources seem to indicate (I don't know how reliably) that he wrote the lyrics. Who knows? Anyway, I thought that what BMI say about its composition is worth including in its own right. Ghmyrtle (talk) 21:21, 16 April 2012 (UTC)
Very tempted to create an article for that (Georgie Fame) album. A ground-breaker in so many ways, It contains, in my opinion, one of the very few cover-versions which betters a Rufus Thomas original - The Dog (available on YouTube! It's still superb.) Martinevans123 (talk) 21:36, 16 April 2012 (UTC)
I'm very tempted to write something on Oscar Washington - but there's very little information available. This certainly looks interesting....! By the way, I met and shook hands with Rufus Thomas, on Beale Street in Memphis. True story. Ghmyrtle (talk) 21:43, 16 April 2012 (UTC)
Wooooooh, how incredible! Rufus Thomas, omg! (v. jealous) But also that link for (apparently) Oscar Washington's mortal remains in a back garden - and that was 6 years ago!? I wonder how you could find out any more. Martinevans123 (talk) 22:00, 16 April 2012 (UTC)
A last treat for you [2] - "Do-Re-Mi" was not on the Flamingo Album, but was Fame's second (1964) single. This is just wonderful, and a great ending. How can Wiki not want a link to a gem like this?! Martinevans123 (talk) 22:43, 16 April 2012 (UTC)
Couldn't resist this - Oscar Washington. Time to sleep.... Ghmyrtle (talk) 23:26, 16 April 2012 (UTC)
PS: Thanks for the Georgie Fame link - great dancing!! Ghmyrtle (talk) 07:42, 17 April 2012 (UTC)
It's a good one, isn't it. A prototype "Pan's Persons" it would seem (- too bad number five has to slink off before the climax, as it were.) My only complaints are that we never see the brass section and that Speedy is not well lit. But Georgie is on top form. Martinevans123 (talk) 11:13, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

Thanks and

Monmouthpedia thanks you for your many contributions Guy. Please keep an eye on the points page as we will be announcing how you can watch the web stream. We have had to postpone the launch because we need the new Monmouthpedia Wifi to be in place to show off your work to people in Monmouth. If you can add your Skype name to the points page then that would enable us to contact you although I'm hoping you will be there. We are intending to have a second phase of this competition but we wanted to make sure we kept to the deadline we had published. This will be the world's first Wikipedia town with your help. Is it possible that you might like to be a "host" and welcome people on Saturday? I will be in meeting and John C may get sidetracked. If you were up for it then you could "own" the wikimeet page which needs some love. Victuallers (talk) 11:17, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

Several problems. Firstly, the page about the meet-up here is completely silent about precisely when it is taking place, and, more importantly, what its purpose is. Is it just a social get-together, or is there more to it than that? I don't know if I'll be able to be there at all (domestic reasons), or how long I'll be there for - I certainly can't commit more than an hour or so. Re the "challenge" and the points - I was happy to help get things going, but I'm not interested in totting up my points score I'm afraid. Do we get points for improving other people's new articles??!! I don't have Skype (well, I could, but I've never been bothered with it). Sorry if that all sounds a bit negative - I'm just responding to the position as I see it. Regards, Ghmyrtle (talk) 11:38, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

Wessex

I am commenting on your changes to Wessex... Regardless of your citizenship or loyalty to the American government, I feel that your dismissal of my entire biological family's murders as "non-neutral" to be insensitive and uncivilized to say the least. I know it is tantamount to treason in the United States, perhaps just insubordination in the United Kingdom (I am a British royal, after all). I am the only living descendant of President Theodore Roosevelt and I will be taking this political fight to you and Wikipedia on an international level -- you and your superiors may respect my updates, or face your organization shut down. I might remind you -- I have a degree in this subject (English), I have several years of experience pursuing this topic, and my DNA actually matches who I claim to be. My website: http://www.houseofwessex.org is legitimate and it is the United Kingdom, not the United States that is committing plagiarism, identity theft and criminal wrongdoing. Princess Sophia, how can you call yourself a British royal whilst at the same time claiming to be of the House of Wessex? The Act of Union did not come into existance until 1707! John of Monmouth's children

I'm becoming puzzled as I draft something about John of Monmouth junior: there is some contradictory information out there, for sure. On John of Monmouth it says that son John from the second marriage inherited. What you can read from the old DNB is at s:http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Page:Dictionary_of_National_Biography_volume_38.djvu/184 and says the son John from the first marriage inherited. Now I wouldn't rule out there being a John by each wife (this apparently is an opinion held by some). The ODNB says young sons John and Philip were kept hostage by King John; so consistent with the old DNB.

It's too late now for me to try to sort it all out. I may go back to Walter Waleran and his daughters and try to search more systematically for the background. Charles Matthews (talk) 21:42, 11 May 2012 (UTC)

Joe Harriott

It has been felt for some time by black Jazz musicians in the Uk that the ground breaking free Form experiments and subsequent albums by Harriott have been marginalised in your account of British Jazz.Since Harriott's album predates that of Ornette Coleman's own experiments in this area it seems strange that there should be no mention of Harriot important innovations this area. Why do you feel that this is unimportant in the context of the time scale and a true overview of contributions to World jazz let alone British Jazz. After all the strong growth of the free scene in the Uk that has influenced many musicians from all backgrounds is currently enjoying a major resurgence throughout the Uk. You have also omitted the Indo Jazz Fusion period of albums that Joe Harriott helped to instigate with other important players. These are now widely acknowledged as some of the first recordings in the genre that became known as World music in later decades up to today. Why is that? Currently in the uk Music colleges students are complaining of being deliberately kept in the dark as to the historical contributions to Jazz in the Uk from people of the African Diaspora,Contributions that after all have benefited everyone interested in the rich tapestry of cultural and social influences that have made the music and scene what it is today. You have made a commendable start on this entry by including some of the names from the diaspora and we wouldn't expect you to name everyone from that background however it is important that contributions like these should really be acknowledged.(Moraphica (talk) 09:06, 6 June 2012 (UTC)).

Thank you for responding. I don't disagree with many of your comments. I love Harriott's music, love the Indo-Jazz Fusions, and agree that he has been marginalised. But, this article is about the whole of British jazz, and your edits go to the other extreme of over-emphasising his importance. The article needs to be properly balanced, and also needs to state what reliable sources say - not any individual editor's personal opinions. Regards, Ghmyrtle (talk) 09:47, 6 June 2012 (UTC)

Rocket 88

The original "Rocket 88" has no bac kbeat at all, just a powerful double shuffle. Haley's version has a backbeat, but apparently no drums at all. The article includes a quote from some critic referring to the original's "steady as she goes back beat" which is nonsense. This is a perfect example of the occasional superiority of original research to a footnoted book. The book is wrong and I am right. As you know, I don't have the stomach for Wikipedia fights any more, so I am noting this problem and putting it in your lap. I think it is pretty interesting that neither one of the "first rock and roll records" has a full-blown rock and roll beat. Best regards, Ortolan88 (talk) 22:25, 9 June 2012 (UTC)

Setting a link from a Wikimedia article to a Wikimedia Commons 'selection'?

Dear Ghmyrtle - Would appreciate some help as I'm struggling with Wikimedia Commons categories/galleries. I sent a message to the [desk 'Setting a link from Wikipedia article to Wikimedia to do a search against all categories?'] and have some useful responses, but these do not really go far enough into what I need to do. I'm finding the help files difficult to grasp. I don't want to fall foul of policy, but it seems to me that this is potentially a complicated area and it would be a shame if people cannot be guided to a simple set of potentially 'dynamic' images easily. Gallery does not seem the sensible route. How can you control category grouping against a selection easily when many people have set their choice of categories and sub-categories and you are basically selecting from all of them? I've uploaded a selection of photographs of the rare 'Badgeworth Buttercup' (11 of them) and they might provide a good example of 'how to'. The other selection I wanted to do is 'Gloucestershire nature reserve' and images from that selection come from various category routes. Any advice you can give would be most welcome. You have added to my knowledge several times already - thank you. Sjeans (talk) 09:28, 13 June 2012 (UTC)

This is way outside my area of expertise, I'm afraid. Have you tried asking at Commons:Help desk? Otherwise, the only thing I can suggest is to do what you want to do, and wait and see if anyone tells you it's outside policy - then, they should also be able to advise you what you should do. Sorry I can't help this time. Ghmyrtle (talk) 10:19, 13 June 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for taking time to reply. I have asked the Commons Help Desk and have replies from two people. Basically the first person gave me coding to suppress the URL link which makes it look more like an internal Wiki project action, which it should be anyway. The second person suggested that there was policy on this and referred me to it, but actually this said 'normally' you should avoid etc. etc. but as this is really an internal action which uses the Wiki search engines I would have thought it was acceptable. It works so beautifully. I will continue to try to understand this rather complex area. You have helped - someone trawling the logs is bound to see what I have done and the queries I have registered against the way to do it, and either provide the 'proper' action and/or remove my update. Thus I think I will 'wait and see' what transpires. Sjeans (talk) 10:42, 13 June 2012 (UTC)

WikiProject Country Houses

I was wondering if you or you know anybody who'd be interested in such a project. If interested let me know and I'll consider making a proposal.♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:55, 19 June 2012 (UTC)

Hmm.. Well, it's not an area I'm specifically interested in - I think you may find that many editors, like me, either concentrate on their own areas (or other areas that they know about), or specific periods of history. My feeling also is that many of the specific Wikiprojects are fairly moribund, though some individual editors may remain active. You could try canvassing interest at Wikipedia talk:UK Wikipedians' notice board, or Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Architecture, perhaps. Ghmyrtle (talk) 13:57, 19 June 2012 (UTC)

Non-free rationale for File:Washboardsam.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Washboardsam.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 10:47, 22 June 2012 (UTC)

So this is someone's idea of a "merge": [5] ?! Hmmm, looks a bit like a total delete to me. I don't think this is what most people envisaged? Martinevans123 (talk) 22:52, 24 June 2012 (UTC)

Perhaps not, but he's right - there was nothing in the article to suggest any notability at all. Personally, I don't think a mention of Maddox is warranted either - it was simply one of the buildings in the street that Maddox may have designed, though the frontage as seen in the photo is clearly later. I think the photo should be retained though, with an explanatory caption. Ghmyrtle (talk) 08:13, 25 June 2012 (UTC)
Oh well, fair enough. Just seems a little strange that the decision was a merge, but nothing got merged. Martinevans123 (talk) 11:20, 25 June 2012 (UTC)
You're right, but I think it was more of a merge if there was anything notable to be said about the shop. Looking through the article, I don't think there was. If there had been any evidence that there was some local notability, it might have been different. Ghmyrtle (talk) 11:27, 25 June 2012 (UTC)

Dear Ghmyrtle, thank you for your suggested Yarmouth racecourse picture. I now find that I was mistaken in thinking that the one I uploaded was copyright. I have evidence to that effect. I take it I can re-upload it, filling in the online form suitably differently? I am new to Wikipedia but in the face of so many "how to" instructions I decided the best thing was to put some new material on and learn as I go along, which I am certainly doing! Incidentally, it is not a coincidence that I have been updating Northern Racing courses pages, because I have written books about three of them.
