Wolverhampton in 1927

Hello Geach. You recently edited the Traffic light article and changed the word "city" to "town" because you stated that Wolverhampton wasn't a city in 1927 when they installed their first traffic light. A review of this section shows a 1921 population of over 102,000 and a 1931 population of over 133,000 (which probably explains why they needed the light, but that's a discussion for another time). I looked through the edit history of the Efua page and found the user who added her date of birth - it's https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Djlollyb . I've asked this user if they can provide a source for her birth date, given that the Billboard article mentions she was 26 in 1993 - making her year of birth 1967 at the latest, not 1970 as currently listed. Looking at this user's talk page, there are a number of posts from other users asking this user to stop adding unsourced information, and at least one post I saw there about making disruptive edits. I think the date of birth is looking rather unreliable unless they can provide a source.Nqr9 (talk) 05:31, 5 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe the date of birth should be removed until a more reliable source can be found - if ever! Although I've seen you've added a citation needed thing. I've seen some articles say "born c.1967" but this probably isn't factual enough. I did actually contact her by email over a year ago to ask a) whether a video for 'Strawberry Boy' exists, b) if she has a copy, and c) whether I could obtain a copy if so. The answer to all 3 questions was yes, but I'm still waiting. I offered something for her, too, in that I've got a demo cassette tape from October '93 with 4 demos (though they sound like finished songs) on it for a second Efua album that never eventuated. She was amazed, and didn't even remember the songs, so I sent her mp3 rips of them. I said I'd be happy to pay her for a copy of the 'Strawberry Boy' video. I don't think I suggested that she could just send the tape to me so I could digitise it myself; I didn't want to appear too pushy. The only excuse I can think of contacting her again without seeming pushy is if I get better (maybe professionally done) rips of those demo tracks, as some of them are a bit poor (mono) sound-quality wise. I'm not sure I'd feel brazen enough to email her to ask her when her date of birth was - even if I was, you can't easily use that as a 'reliable source' on wikipedia, even though it's directly from her... unless taking a screen-shot of the email, which would maybe be a bit rude without asking her if that was OK. I had some edits reverted last year when I started adding ARIA peaks outside the top 100 from those emails, using "personal communication" as the source - before I thought of taking screen-shots. I'm not hopeful on ever receiving a copy of the video, as in the last correspondence we had she said "one day I will get the video copied for you somehow", or something to that effect. I'm pretty sure "Strawberry Boy" was not released as a single in Australia (we got 'Down Is the Drop' as the follow-up to 'Somewhere'), either. I think the date of birth should be removed altogether, because when I googled her date of birth, I saw the wikipedia date crop up everywhere, as though it was fact, when it probably isn't.Nqr9 (talk) 23:06, 5 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Wow. I did notice the other day that on Efua's website it featured the "Somewhere" video which had been uploaded by you - which I've watched myself numerous times, and shown other people! But I agree that asking her age outright may not be the nicest thing to do, even if you were still in contact with her. I bought a second hand copy of the "Strawberry Boy" 12" single from a local charity shop about a year ago - it's got a big rip on the front cover though. I also bought "Down Is the Drop" at the same time. I had no idea until recently when you added the info what order the singles were released in in the UK - I was only aware of "Somewhere" at the time of release as it was played a fair bit on the radio, but of course that wasn't a Top 40 hit in the UK, unlike Australia where it seems to have done quite well. Removing the alleged date of birth is probably a good idea. By the way, did I read in that 1993 article you showed me that she was born in Ghana? Yes, I thought of adding that she was born in Ghana, too. Interesting to read that her dad is/was an entomologist. I think putting her date of birth as ca. 1967 with a reference link to that Billboard article mentioning she was 26 in 1993 would be alright. Although 'Somewhere' peaked at #16 in Australia, it hung around for a bit (16 weeks in the top 50). Charting singles generally hung around for longer here than in the UK back then. I'm not sure why it did better in Australia than in the UK. Radio certainly weren't playing it; the FM stations didn't really play pop or dance music outside of the top 40 or evening listener-voted countdown programs aimed at teens until 1995. I emailed Efua through her site (there was a contact link there somewhere). I'd have to find where I saved it, but I saw a UK promo CD for 'Strawberry Boy' on eBay a while back that had a release date sticker on it for some time in March 1993 (I think it was the 29th).Nqr9 (talk) 01:25, 6 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, I noticed that you removed Alexandra Burke from the list of associated acts for Melissa Bell. And then you're edit summary was "as already discussed, Alexandra Burke is her daughter but professionally they're not associated". So respectfully my question is, where was this discussed at? It's on the Melissa Bell talk page, but Alexandra's name had already been removed in a previous edit by another user. The 'Associated acts' listing is for acts who have professionally worked together, and as far as I'm aware despite being mother/daughter Melissa Bell and Alexandra Burke didn't work together professionally. 'Albums produced by...' category

Hi Geach,

Hey, I hope doing well! Just dropping you line about my thoughts on adding compilation albums like The Hit List (Cliff Richard album) to the categories 'Albums produced by Alan Tarney' and 'Albums produced by Stock Aitken Waterman'. For me, when those albums are compilations with few songs by those producers (in this case Tarney 2 and SAW 1), or those albums haven't had any new songs produced/recorded for them by that that producer, it doesn't seem right to add that album to the 'Albums produced by...' category. I don't know if there is a rule or guide defined anywhere about this, but to my thinking it doesn't pass the "pub test".

If I was to be strict, it even feels misleading to add compilation albums of exclusively previously released material to a producer's 'Albums produced by...' category at all, because the producer hasn't contributed any new work to it beyond the previous or original release. That may be too strict for some, so an exception to that perhaps would be where the person or team is a producer of a significant proportion of the songs across the compilation album, and then you could mount an argument that they are the producer, even though it is just a compilation album. However I could see this making for messy category lists that contain long lists of compilation albums, particularly for older successful artists that have many Wikipedia pages for compilation albums. I would think that what readers probably really want to know is which studio albums was the producer involved in and any compilation albums where new songs have been recorded.

I do see that compilations are commonly credited to particular producers in the category pages (and I assume that is why you added these examples), but I don't know if any rules have been followed where albums are being added to these category pages. Do you know of any guidelines around this? What are your thoughts on this otherwise?

Hi! To be honest, adding producer categories is one of the more recent things I've started doing - it's a rather pedantic thing to do to try and improve articles! Over time I'd noticed some other compilation articles with them, even when that producer only produced the one song on it, such as Cliff's "I Just Don't Have the Heart" being the only track on his compilations being produced by Stock Aitken Waterman. I'm not sure what the official Wikipedia protocol is and I admit, like you, I've even wondered if it's the right thing to do or not. Despite having been editing on Wikipedia for about 100 years, when tentatively adding something like this I still often simply look at similar, albeit far better-constructed articles to see what other editors have done - often high traffic articles by acts such as the Beatles, Michael Jackson, Madonna etc. The latter's The Immaculate Collection compilation article for instance includes each producer in the categories section, with Lenny Kravitz featuring despite only producing one of the tracks on there.
But I have no problem if you feel the need to remove the producers from any of Cliff's compilation articles as I know you keep a watch over those and I'm not 100% sure about this myself. Have a further look around yourself to see what other editors have done with similar compilation articles by other artists.
On a separate, but related note, I was surprised when I realised a prolific producer such as Alan Tarney hadn't got his own albums category, then found even more albums that I didn't realise he'd produced so ended up with a very healthy-looking category! I originally thought it would just be Cliff and A-ha. I was tempted to create one for Alan Tarney's produced singles but I think there are even more of those - the albums category, along with all the adding of links and such, took long enough to create!--Geach (talk) 19:52, 13 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Although it doesn't make sense to me, I'll just leave it with you and others that have done likewise. An Alan Tarney produced singles category does make sense to me though, I think that could be a interesting one if you are inclined. Hi. Because you didn't provide one, I don't understand your reason or the benefit for changing the track listing on Age of Reason (album) to a wikitable. Even if you were to have turned it into a track listing template, this isn't necessary to do, and a compelling reason would need to be provided to change something that's been in place for years.
