Blocked

On January 6th 2006 the static IP address used by the institution I attend and mainly edit Wikipedia with was blocked. This IP address is the IP of a proxy server used by the institution for security reasons. Other users at the institution seem to have used the IP rather than create an account and have vandalized Wikipedia :-(. So untill the proxy's IP is unblocked, I can't edit. --Gary Kirk (talk) 14:51, 6 January 2006 (UTC)

Tony Banks - life peers and the title "Baron"

I notice you've moved Tony Banks's page from Baron Stratford to Lord Stratford several times now. I know it seems strange, but the convention on Wikipedia is to list life peers under the title Baron, even though they are usually know as "Lord X". Check out the page of any other peer, e.g. Sebastian Coe, Baron Coe or Lord Falconer of Thoroton (which redirects). --JRawle 17:03, 11 January 2006 (UTC)

The peerage has five ranks; in descending order: duke, marquess, earl, viscount and baron. All except duke are addressed (in speaking, etc.) as "Lord". The middle three are referred to formally as "Viscount X", "Earl of Y", etc. For barons, however, they are always referred to just as "Lord X" rather than Baron. The only exception is when they are first "introduced" in the House of Lords, and on other very formal documents such as the New Year's Honours list. All life peers are created at the lowest rank of baron.

The same conventions are traditionally true for women (as peers in their own right, or as peers' wives). However, female life peers tend to prefer to be referred to as "Baroness X", probably to distinguish themselves from the wife of a peer (who would normally be called Lady X, although in fact being a baroness).

It's only the title of the article, and the first line that gives his name, that should read "Baron". Throughout the article, he should be referred to in the usual way, i.e. Lord Stratford. I suppose the disambiguation page could be either (I'd prefer Lord), but the link needs to be to the "Baron" page, obviously! --JRawle 23:35, 11 January 2006 (UTC)

Incidentally, the same thing would apply to peers of other ranks. The title and the first line should be "Viscount X", while the rest of the article refers to "Lord X".

Just incase there be any confusion Scottish Peerages (ie those titles before the Act of Union) weren't created and don't use Baron/Baroness in any form. They are always Lord/Lady (title) so it's important to check datesAlci12 18:29, 31 March 2006 (UTC)

Ravenclaw template

Regarding the template Template: user ravenclaw, I believe it is better to use the image of the raven. If you wish for the images to be consistent, then the appropriate action should be to add an image of a lion to Gryffindor, a badger to Hufflepuff, and a snake of some kind to Slytherin. Speedy deletion

Hi Garykirk. I noticed you had applied a speedy-delete tag to a couple of articles that don't seem to me to meet the criteria for speedy deletion. Notability is only a criteria for speedy deletion if the article is about a person or group of people, such as a band or club. It doesn't apply to cemetaries and the like. You could, of course, nominate it for AFD instead. Hope this helps! —Cleared as filed. 16:57, 16 January 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, on that note you might want to be more careful about applying the tag to a normal article that had been vandalized to the point of unrecognizability (e.g. Scott Keith). The vandalism was "nonsense" and an "attack page" but a few edits earlier it was OK. I highly recommend grabbing the "popups" tool as it makes RC Patrol a lot easier (plus it's fun to use). --Do Not Talk About Feitclub (contributions) 13:05, 27 February 2006 (UTC)

• For a phpBB forum I'd reccomend ForumForFree. I have an IPB and phpBB forum hosted for free, with ads, by them. You could easily set up a subdomain on your site - forum.eddiesegoura.com and have it redirect to the phpBB forum. That would take all the bandwidth and server space costs out of the equation!
• For a free MediaWiki installation, try EditThis.Info. It uses the same engine, MediaWiki, as Wikipedia and all its sister projects. For a fantastic example of a non-Wikimedia Foundation wiki, take a look at The Amusement Wiki. Your contributions there would also be much appreciated!
