Significant figures in distances

Dear Fucherastonmeym87. The distances and sizes of galaxies cannot be measured with precision like 49,582,400 ly. If you see the distance like 15.2 Mpc in a source, it can be converted to light years with maximum three significant figures, i.e. it should be 49.6 Mly, not 49,582,400 ly. It seems that you simply multiply the measured distance by 3,262,000 which is an approximate value for ratio of Mpc/ly; a more exact value is 3,261,563.777 Mpc/ly, but this precision for the conversion factor in this case has no sense, because if you measure something to 1% accuracy, you cannot write its value to 9th significant figure. Astronomical edits

Thanks for the continued improvements to astronomical articles and adding new ones. However, I want to point out that you are causing serious problems in your style, making it near impossible to check these edits. Recent edits, for examples, of NGC 3313.

  • Continued missing edit summaries
  • Reference names e.g. ref name=":3" means nothing. Suggest you use something like ref name="Richer1989", which simply describes the source. If it needs to be used multiple times, then the article's logic can be followed.
  • Over use of references. We only need to verify the text not every internal wording
  • Organise the structure of reference in the same way, leaving the new text line ordered by say:
|title=
|author=
|url=
This way we can check each line. (It then can be condensed in subsequent edits, if need be.) I found a number that I corrected in this NGC 3313 article, but they we difficult to find
  • Remove unnecessary parameters or long tracking extensions of url characters
  • Distances are in parsecs followed by light-years. If source says megaparsecs, then use megaparsecs and light-years in brackets. NED only gives Mpc or megaparsecs. Size only gives kpc.
  • Use SIMBAD and NED for general parameters, and sometimes published papers.
  • Carefully paraphrase from references. e.g. Paraphrasing 'Physical characteristics' here is awfully close to possible plagiarism. If you need to do so, use multiple sources. e.g. NED gives a summary of this under "4 Notes" in the first INDEX box.[2]

I have reorganised this whole NGC 3313 article and references as a direct example, but have not changed anything of the text you wrote.

Please do follow article outlines and structures so that other editors can check your input. It is important that articles are a collaborative effort and not just one person's point of view. Also information about celestial objects are changing all the time, and it is important that these additions can be slotted in and the necessary references updated or changed.

I have not intended to criticise your work here, as most is quite relevant and non-controversial, but I give it in the spirit of a suggestion to perhaps make you think about more logical editing.
