Blue Rasberry (talk) 20:03, 12 November 2014 (UTC) A sincere thank you to you, Blue Rasberry (talk) for taking the time to let me know about this. I'm sorry for not replying sooner to your earlier comment on my talk page about the Millicent Fanny Preston Stanley page. This item was listed as an editathon subject (University of Sydney Wikibomb on 31 October) and the organisers didn't realise there was already an article about her (because the pre existing article didn't include her middle name so didn't appear in a search). So I worked on it and after moving it to the mainspace, found that an article already existed in a much more rudimentary form. I reported it and, after reading your first notice, I moved the information from my article that was new into the older article. It is therefore fine to delete the page I created. Is there anything else that I need to do? Thank you Frances Di Lauro 20:39, 12 November 2014 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Peer reviewHi Fransplace, Was the OLES2129 class instructed to add their new articles to Wikipedia:Peer review? Or did you make use of some resource that suggested this? I've already raised the issue in the Wikipedia:Education noticeboard, but Wikipedia:Peer review is typically low volume, and most often used for more mature articles that have multiple contributors. Have you considered having students assigned to review each other's articles as a first step?Dialectric (talk) 18:56, 22 October 2018 (UTC) Minor EditsThanks for your comment at the Education Noticeboard about what's happening with the articles from your course. Would you happen to know anything about this? I only ask because the appropriate action for students to take is to remove a request from RA once their article is complete. Striking only makes the process straining for the users that patrol this section of Wikipedia, who would see this as either a page already created or that a subject is not notable for the encyclopedia, which I do believe the subjects are notable if the students intend to work on them during the semester. OLES2129 students and image uploads/image useHi Fransplace. It appears that some of your students or at least students belong to OLES2129 at the University of Sydney are working on various drafts as part of a class project. I've come across their various drafts because they've been flagged for violations of Wikipedia's non-free content use policy. The students in question are VerumRex, Austinameo and Cecelia Chen Puying. These student have been trying to add non-free files to their drafts or user sandboxes which is not allowed per the aforementioned policy. The files have been removed on multiple occasions by different editors, but the students continued to re-add them. Anyway, I asked a Wiki Ed advisor named Shalor (Wiki Ed) for help with this at User talk:Shalor (Wiki Ed) and she left some user talk page messages for the students. I've also left some user talk page messages for the students as well. I'm not sure how often the students check their user talk pages, but perhaps you could mention something about this to them during your class. You might also want to mention something about Wikipedia:Image use policy and c:Commons:Licensing as well because image use and licensing can be quite tricky and mistakes are often made. FWIW, mistakes are OK as long as they're not being repeated over and over again, especially after warnings were given. Repeated violations or relevant policies and guidelines related to images in particular is one of the things which tends to dealt with rather harshly and often leads to an administrator quickly blocking an account to stop any further disruption. So, if your students have any questions about image use, they can always ask for help at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions or even the Wikipedia Teahouse. Wiki Ed even has a training module specifically developed to help students with all things image related. Since 99of9 is also listed as one of the contacts for OLES2129, I've pinged him in this post. However, if you could also let him know just in case, then maybe he could let his students know about the training module as well. -- Marchjuly (talk) 11:28, 18 May 2019 (UTC)
University of Sydney CourseI like that you are giving courses on Wikipedia. But could you please request your students to check what they link? And only link when it adds something to the article? Yesterday I worked on Cider Syrup, what was severely overlinked en included 74 links to disambiguation pages. Today I came across Eastern Ethics in Business, overlinked and with 40 links to disambiguation pages, and Rural Industry in India, overlinked and with 11 links to disambiguation pages. I am worried by now. The Banner talk 22:28, 5 June 2019 (UTC) OLES2129: Thank you!Hi. Over the past few weeks, I've been reviewing a lot of the articles written by your OLES2129 students. Thank you for teaching this course! The collection of drafts I've been reviewing have been interesting, well-written, and on important topics which are enhancing the encyclopedia in many ways. Wikipedia is a victim of its own success, attracting anybody and everybody who wants to use it for self-promotion, SEO, and advertising. It's is truly refreshing to see that there are still folks in the world who want to write the kinds of articles your students are writing. Thank you again, and please let your students know how much this is appreciated. -- RoySmith (talk) 12:23, 7 June 2019 (UTC)
ReferencesThank you for contributing to Wikipedia. Remember that when adding content about health, please only use high-quality reliable sources as references. We typically use review articles, major textbooks and position statements of national or international organizations (There are several kinds of sources that discuss health: here is how the community classifies them and uses them). WP:MEDHOW walks you through editing step by step. A list of resources to help edit health content can be found here. The edit box has a built-in citation tool to easily format references based on the PMID or ISBN.

Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 02:57, 27 June 2019 (UTC) Poor quality article by OLES2129 studentFransplace, I came across the article Predicate crime because I saw a reference to predicate crimes in the press, and didn't know what they were. It was an awful awful article in almost every way a Wikipedia article can be awful. It was incoherent, unclear, and poorly written. The writer clearly didn't understand the topic and grossly misrepresented the sources. Large amounts of irrelevant material are included. In the end, I had to delete almost all of it because it was irretrievably bad. I then looked to see who had added this low-quality material, and found that it was a certain User:Pattywinter, who had apparently written it for a course called OLES2129. Now, I really really want to support new users on Wikipedia, and I'm very enthusiastic about encouraging university students to learn how to contribute to Wikipedia. But there has got to be some sort of quality control. Clearly no one at the University of Sydney reviewed the Predicate Crime article. Take a look at Pattywinter's final version. Forgetting the fact that it is disorganized, rambling, and generally wrong, it includes incoherent sentences like "It is an illegal action that opposed the public order and against the Law", "there was the Vienna Convention where the attention to money laundering is a phenomenon", and "Fines can be separated to the jail sentence" (from the original "Fines can be separate from, or in addition to, jail or prison sentences") and in ll cases the garbled paraphrase is in any case utterly irrelevant to the topic of the article). Footnotes are incorrect or incomplete. This sort of material is not only a waste of Wikipedia editors' time, but a serious disservice to our readers. I implore you to exert more editorial control over your students' contributions! Thanks, --Macrakis (talk) 19:14, 26 December 2019 (UTC) OLES2129Fransplace, I come to you as one of the instructors of OLES 2129: Writing for the Digital World. I was first alerted to a problem when I came across the editing of Cookieminicatt at Spider roll. This student's writing on this page is unacceptable, and I have tried to warn them of this but they are pretty insistent on their very poorly written and formatted version of the page. From their user page, I find that they are being tutored by lboikov as part of this class which you are apparently running. I further find that there is an entire discussion of this class's prior activities at the Wikipedia Education Noticeboard. I hope that you will better monitor the activities of your students. Fixed your talk page archivingHi! I took the liberty of fixing the auto-archiving settings at the top of this page. I also decided to change it to use incremental archives, since you already have /Archive 1, and the next one will just be /Archive 2 --rchard2scout (talk) 13:49, 22 April 2021 (UTC) This Month in Education: April 2021About This Month in Education · Subscribe/Unsubscribe · Global message delivery · For the team: Romaine 22:48, 25 April 2021 (UTC)

Glad to have your help! Thanks for being so encouraging to these young writers. (Isn't this a cool story of which to be a part?) It always helps me when just for doing the right thing, someone pats me on the back and says thanks! Encouragement like yours is motivating. If we can help you, I'm certain wikipedians are standing by to do so. Don't be shy if you need to learn something or need student coaching. I'm even farther away from Sydney than Nashville. ArbCom 2021 Elections voter messageStudents editing Paralympic Wikipedia articlesFrances - I would love to talk to you about including Paralympic articles in your course if that is possible. We still have so much to be done and there are lots of options that could be of interest, from stubs to images, etc. Tony.naar (talk) 09:03, 12 January 2022 (UTC) This Month in Education: January 2022This Month in Education Contents • Headlines • Subscribe In This Issue
