The Talk Page of the Fol De Rol Troll

The Beginning of the Discussion Page

{{Helpme}} I'm trying to create an article and want to place a 'red link' to Bikini Atoll (the band). There is a wikipage on Bikini Atoll (the thing); how do I not link to this but create the relevent 'red link'?Fol de rol troll (talk) 23:38, 26 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

(Just convenience links) see WP:Troll for a reason why, and the changing username page where you can request a name change. It's nothing against you personally; there are, as TPH points out, negative connotations within the Wikipedia community. Best, PeterSymonds (talk) 23:49, 26 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I hadn't really thought about that, though I was aware of the connotations. Booo. That's what you get for being into fantasy and being a bit of a nerd though. :( Fol de rol troll (talk) 00:15, 27 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
On a side note: If you intend to create Bikini Atoll (band), you should read Wikipedia's notability guidelines for music to avoid writing an article that will then be deleted quickly. Regards SoWhy 23:52, 26 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Bikina Atoll released two albums on the Bella Union label that has a few notable artists (Fleet Foxes, Andrew Bird) on it, see http://www.bellaunion.com/artists.php. This satisfies criterion 5 of 'Criteria for musicians and ensembles', doesn't it? I'm not immediately publishing anything anyway. Just building for my own joy and happiness with an aim toward publishing one day.Fol de rol troll (talk) 00:15, 27 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello!

Hello there! Welcome to wikipedia and I thoroughly enjoy the reference though I had to give it a google to see what you were actually on about. I hadn't thought about that story in years. Obviously your joy of goats makes it more memorable to you! I don't think it's entirely necessary to change your username but if it interests you User:Billy Goat Gruff is available and a fine name at that! Alternately you could somehow change your on screen name to not include troll (e.g. Fol de rol T) but I'm unsure where you do this. It's in the preferences somewhere i think.

On to Bikini Atoll (band): It looks like they'll pass the Notability requirements. A quick google gives me these three album reviews which should be sufficient for notability morotoria review review in The Independent Liar's Exit review. You'll need to cite the information from the articles —

Here is a basic citation template:

  • <ref> {{cite web |last= |first= |title= |publisher= |date= |url= |accessdate=}} </ref>

"Last" and "First" are for author names. "Date" and "accessdate" should use this style = 2008-11-27. Or if that's a pain any other clear style is fine.

For using the same source more than once use this the first time:

  • <ref name="Example"> {{cite web |last= |first= |title= |publisher= |date= |url= |accessdate=}} </ref>

followed by this in next citation of the same article:

  • <ref name="Example"/>

I'm always around if you need more basic help with the markup and everything. For starting the Bikini Atoll article, emulating the Fleet Foxes article would be a good start. Leave me a message if you've any problems. Sillyfolkboy (talk) 18:28, 27 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fair dos. I've come across that Gaiman article before actually when judging the sandman comics' relevance to some other article. Indeed my works do spread far and wide. Be sure to make use of watching pages so you can see where things are headed. Don't get bogged down with vandals though: you know, making Didier Drogba just read 'drogba ya cheat gazza la' and the like. Any whos, we still need to meet up, we'll sort something out soon. Try to keep all personal stuff off the talk though: many "wikipedians" have received phone calls, personal attacks and threatening letters from mad fizkos! Strange. ps you like a gai-man! (better than a Boorman i suppose) Sillyfolkboy (talk) 23:23, 27 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You're absolutely right mate. It's generally agreed that giving dosage advice in articles is a terrible idea as it may mean people self-medicate. I have to say that's a pretty sound rule to go by (see here) as I can imagine a hundred doofuses (doofii?) clicking on Wikipedia and going "oh. 125mg? (gulp) hmmm...Is my head supposed to feel so pulsate-y?". I'll take the info out and contact Wikipedia:WikiProject Medicine,; the editors there really seem to know their stuff. If you ever come across stuff like this (especially when there is no medical reference and it appears like personal experience) them remove it and say why you did it on the talk page. Don't be afraid to just wholesale delete parts of articles that appear to be wrong and don't have an adequate reference. Thousands of edits are made every day and not all of them are good!

PS: I completely rewrote Alim Qasimov and Fleet Foxes if you want a quick read. I'm trying to get them on the Did you know... column on the front page at the moment. Take is easy man. Sillyfolkboy (talk) 13:29, 6 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Done and done. And when I say done, I mean Dunne. Sillyfolkboy (talk) 13:40, 6 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Bikini Atoll

Ahoy there matey! I'll just give the article a quick look over but it looks fine as is. Hope you're doing OK and haven't been too confuse by various things wiki. I'll give you the low down in a second. Sillyfolkboy (talk) 01:23, 18 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Right, just going to quickly make a couple of changes then you can move it to Bikini Atoll (band). A couple of pointers: references go after the punctuation mark if at the end of the sentence; Italicise newspapers/magazines like The Independent; for dates just put 20 January (no "th"/"st"/"rd" etc). Just give a couple of mins. Sillyfolkboy (talk) 01:29, 18 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
All done. Prepare to make your own first full article then! Giving their myspace a listen and they sound quite good. Interestingly, I think it's possible to make an article for Viva Seifert as anyone who has competed in the Olympics is automatically notable. I'm currently reviewing Unforgiven (2008) for the Good Article process. Had no idea that CM Punk had made top line and old Fit Finlay was still wrestling. He looked ancient over ten years ago now! Give me a buzz if you've any problems with moving the article. Sillyfolkboy (talk) 01:44, 18 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re Yo lee Cornith

I've fixed your AfD nomination - you needed to copy/paste {{subst:afd3|pg=Yo lee cornith}} into the AfD page rather than {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Yo lee cornith}}. Best regards, EyeSerenetalk 22:22, 31 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No probs, you're welcome ;) You know where my talk page is if there's anything I can help with. EyeSerenetalk 22:27, 31 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Incidentally, if you click on the "my preferences" link at the top of the page, go to the "Gadgets" tab, enable Twinkle under Editing gadgets, save, and bypass your browser cache, you'll get a load of useful extra tags along the top of the page. One of them is labelled "xfd", and you can use this to automate AfD nominations. It saves a lot of work ;) Note: Twinkle is a semi-automated tool and quite powerful, so if you decide to give it a go be sure to read the guide first! EyeSerenetalk 22:35, 31 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Bob Scott

No worries. I remember what it was like, just getting started; it can be awfully intimidating sometimes. Truth be told, there's still a lot I don't know much about. One learns as one goes - I learned a lot just by doing. Anyhow, if you've got any questions, don't hesitate to ask; I'm always happy to help out. --User:AlbertHerring Io son l'orecchio e tu la bocca: parla! 00:31, 11 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Bob Scott (ornithologist

Are you familiar with the "move" function? If not, see Help:Moving a page. When you realised that you'd created "Bob Scott (ornithologist", you could have simply moved it, rather than taking the effort to recreate the page at the title you wanted. Nyttend (talk) 01:16, 11 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

{{help me}} I'm just wondering if someone can point me in the direction of Wikipedia's policy on "swear words", also on who I am best raising an issue regarding full works being written on this poet's article. Two poems are quoted in full, which I'm sure is stretching copyright just a little, also one of them appears to be a child-friendly edit, with the words "Fuck you" replaced with "Stitch that". If someone could let me know if there's a specific policy or group who would manage instances such as these, I'd be delighted. Cheers Fol de rol troll (talk) 15:24, 18 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Quoting copyrighted poems wholesale is definitely a copyvio (Wikipedia:Do not include the full text of lengthy primary sources, which I found from WP:POETRY, who might be able to advise further) and swearing comes under WP:NOTCENSORED. Hope that helps. - Jarry1250 (t, c) 15:37, 18 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Stitch the po-lice, Stitch the po-lice, Stitch 'em! Awesome. Sillyfolkboy (talk) 19:16, 18 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I've refactored this in attempt to make it as neutral as possible in a global sense; we are not qualified to judge whether her conviction is intrinsically correct or not. Being convicted of murder only makes you a "convicted murderer" within the scope of the system within which that conviction occurs, and we should not assume that the conviction is either correct or incorrect, given the evidential doubt expressed in her article. In short, it's moot, but I think the wording we have now satisfies neutrality policy. Rodhullandemu 21:56, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed, it's all a bit weird. Maybe Rose's record wasn't ratified or something? The EEA don't list road records and the source I previously used to make Nick Rose's page suggests that he still has the record. (I presume Jon Brown's "dh" means downhill?). Haile Gebrsellasie has the all comers record.

I think this might be the UK runner competing in UK record. I'd mark it down as that if anything. Still I've no idea who this Mark Scrutton bod is... Sillyfolkboy (talk) (edits)WIKIPROJECT ATHLETICS NEEDS YOU! 15:07, 27 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Do as you see fit

I have certainly attempted to engage the discussion on every level, and will continue to do so. As I pointed out, a number of editors have supported the material, and the opposition is flawed. Haiduc (talk) 12:59, 18 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I edit on gay history in general and pederasty in particular. You expect me to consent to suppression of such information, all the more when it is pushed by people who see queer studies as "an agenda?" What is your agenda? Antiquity? Greek studies? Is editing on that topic "pushing an agenda"? How would you like to have people accuse you of being an agenda-driven editor when you are editing on the topic of your choosing? I am sorry my friend but YOU are in the wrong here, you and all who find fault with any aspect of documenting homosexual history. It is not the editor who includes information on homosexuality who is to be questioned, but the one who labors mightily to suppress it, trying tactic after tactic in the hope that something, anything, will work.
As I said, three editors have posted the material in the article, and a fourth has supported its validity. Against that have been thrown fallacious, insidious and ad nauseam repetitive arguments. THAT is what you want to build an encyclopedia upon?! That is not an editorial standard I can support. Haiduc (talk) 13:41, 18 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
"I suggest that you might be pushing your own interest a little here." My interest is the honest reporting of facts, and it is a fact that Ptolemaeus said what he he said. Since not everything he said was a lie, and since scholars have elected to not dismiss him, we can do no less. Haiduc (talk) 13:56, 18 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Dwain Chambers

Hi, yesterday i added a link to a career story dwain chambers gave on a non profit site called icould. i noticed you had taken it down as vandilism, i was wondering how it is vandilism. I put it up there in good faith as i beleive it gives a really good insight into Dwain but obviously i dont want to ruin his page so if you could explain to me it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much (mike) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.46.150.27 (talk) 08:38, 29 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Flickr

It's a bit of a mix as photos range from completely restricted to completely freely licensed. I use the advance search. At the bottom, check all the creative commons boxes (for wikipedia images must not be restricted for commercial use, and must be a share-alike, or adaptable, work). See the Bobby Robson picture. On the right hand column in additional information it says "some rights reserved". Hover over the grey circles and they say "Attribution" and "share-a-like". These are the ok ones. If you find a "$" with a cross in that section, that's not ok. Generally, that's about it. Just give me a holla and a link if you're unsure. Take care man! Sillyfolkboy (talk) (edits)WIKIPROJECT ATHLETICS NEEDS YOU! 11:46, 1 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yeeeep, that is usually the case! People tend to do non-commercial because (a) they don't want others making money off their work for nothing and (b) many commercial operations notoriously forget about the attribution part, sassing them more. Can't entirely blame them to be honest: many flickr posters are professional photographers, so when one photo is released for free it becomes the main photo in circulation, thus impinging on further sales.
This is one case where Wikipedia undoubtedly favours amateurism. Whereas the text fully depends upon the linked and cited sources (thus supporting the core of academia/journalism etc) images have no such similar link. Put bluntly, you or I would uploaded our own Robles pic because we have nothing to lose from doing so. A professional, and most certainly better, photographer would see no benefit from releasing a photo. It is very much a charity case, hence why you end up with amateur shite like John Arne Riise or my slightly blurry Bolty race photos. Strange Wiki Article problem

{{helpme}}

Hi, just rooting around randomly has led me to this Elise Tan Roberts, which, for me at least, just loads a page saying "Override this function". Just wondering whether it's happening to everyone looking at this article and who I'd report it to for fixing. Thanks! Fol de rol troll (talk) 23:14, 5 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Elise Tan Roberts displays fine for me, using both Firefox 3.5 and Internet Explorer 7. I suggest trying a different browser to see if the problem is limited to one browser for you. You can report a bug at Wikipedia:Bug reports and feature requests by following the instructions there. If you have any more questions, either let me know or post it at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical) where they have more experience with technical issues. Thanks! --Mysdaao talk 23:51, 5 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

RE: Escape the Fate

Wait, I don't get it, linking things in hidden comments doesn't do anything, any code changes don't work unless the page itself is saved and shown outside of the edit mode. In this case hidden comments aren't. • GunMetal Angel 23:05, 27 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This is why I never do anything constructive past of my bedtime, lol. Goodnight. • GunMetal Angel 23:11, 27 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, can you do me a favor and make sure people stop editting in the Screamo genre under Escape The Fate's genre? There's a huge difference between screaming and screamo and I hate that people are being ignorant enough as to put ETF under the Screamo genre. Raktoner (talk to me) —Preceding undated comment added 20:14, 7 September 2009 (UTC).[reply]

What if ETF themselves denied the Screamo tag/genre--Because in the AP Interview they said it's a tag they particularly dislike. Would that be a good enough source? Raktoner (talk to me) —Preceding undated comment added 01:56, 10 September 2009 (UTC).[reply]

Alright, fair enough... It's not particularly to my liking they get that tag, but what can you do? Thanks for explaining it to me. Raktoner (talk to me) —Preceding undated comment added 03:01, 12 September 2009 (UTC).[reply]

Interview request

Hello, my name is Reeves Wiedeman, and I am with The New Yorker magazine. I am writing a story on Wikipedia, and specifically the often extensive debates on what to include in certain entries. One such debate I came across is one you took some part in: the debate over whether to include Neil Gaiman’s family’s history with Scientology in his entry.

I’m hoping to talk to you briefly about the Wikipedia editing process: etiquette, process, debate, and some of the things that go into developing the entries.

If you could, please contact me at Reeves_Wiedeman@newyorker.com to let me know the best way to reach you. Thank you for your time, and I hope to speak with you soon.

Invitation to the African Destubathon

Hi. You may be interested in participating in the African Destubathon which starts on October 15. Africa currently has over 37,000 stubs and badly needs a quality improvement editathon/contest to flesh out basic stubs. There are proposed substantial prizes to give to editors who do the most articles, and planned smaller prizes for doing to most destubs for each of the 53 African countries, so should be enjoyable! So it would be a good chance to win something for improving stubs on African sportspeople, including footballers, athletes, Olympians and Paralympians etc, particularly female ones, but also male. Even if contests aren't your thing we would be grateful if you could consider destubbing a few African articles during the drive to help the cause and help reduce the massive 37,000 + stub count, of which many are rated high importance (think Regions of countries etc). If you're interested in competing or just loosely contributing a few expanded articles on African Paralympians, Olympians and committees etc, please add your name to the Contestants/participants section. Diversity of work from a lot of people will make this that bit more special. Thanks. --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 21:14, 6 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
