Hey Fir, I wanted to commend you on the direction your photo contribution have been taken lately (as far as I can judge from FP). Those are mostly great quality and high value pics. Your License

Hey,

First of all, I'd like to say that I really like your pictures. I wanted you to know that I think the following message doesn't hold much ground as since the pictures are released under the GFDL, they don't really have to ask you or negotiate with you because the pictures are free for commercial as well as non-commercial use.

"If you are a (commercial) publisher and you want me to write you an email or paper mail giving you an authorization to use my works in your products or a license with the terms of your choice, please email me to negotiate terms."

Yonatan (contribs/talk) 15:37, 5 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Not quite true. Publishers could only reuse them in accordance with the GFDL, which means they in turn have to make the image (and its derivations) available to the public. Stevage 22:42, 5 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Never mind, I see that under the GFDL they'd have to print the whole license along with the picture and I doubt they'd do that. Anyway, no harm done. Yonatan (contribs/talk) 22:50, 5 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, the GFDL is pretty stupid anyway. Wikipedia doesn't come close to complying with it, strangely enough. Stevage 04:53, 6 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. I've been a bit naive and nonchalant for a while here, but the more I think about/investigate licencing on Wikipedia, the more I realise how silly it is. GFDL doesn't seem to apply particularly well to images at all in the first place, and the requirement to use a CC Commercial licence just plain sucks. I don't see any reason why, except that Wikipedia secretly plans to launch a commercial service and profit from our donated hard work at a later date. ;-) Diliff | (Talk) (Contribs) 15:48, 6 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
[2] [3] you're not the first. Btw fully agree with you Diliff and support your stance on the Buckingham Palace photo. --Fir0002 05:31, 7 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
If I may chime in. I may be wrong here, but this was the explanation I was given. If Wikipedia goes belly up, the point of non-commericial licences is to allow other companies to publish the encyclopaedia. If not, it will be lost forever, as the photos and text could only ever be published by a non-profit company. --liquidGhoul 10:38, 7 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Subject/headline:

Hi there. I would like to comment on a few things. 1. What's with your username? 2. You don't think it's a little conceited to nominate nearly every single photo you upload [citation needed] as a featured picture? I would think it would be more flattering for someone to nominate something I uploaded than to nominate it myself (I'm sure you'll get some examples of this for you, but I have yet to see any). Your e-penis must be like three miles long. 3. Nearly all the photos of yours I have seen are fantastic, keep up the good work. --Indolences 01:36, 11 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

In Fir0002's defence, I would also nominate every picture I uploaded as an FP if they were as good as his. Also, since many of his pictures are worthy of being nominated, he's just saving everyone else a lot of work by nominating them for us ;) Stevage 13:21, 11 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
This user is pushing his photos towards the community, whilst the community should be pulling the photos towards itself. I totally agree with you that the photographs taken by this user are nearly all breathtaking, but I can't nominate myself for the Nobel prize, no matter how much I deserve it. The Internet is serious business. --Indolences 21:56, 11 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Heh. I see it like a guy wandering around selling donuts. Except, instead of selling them, he's giving them away. As long as we keep patting his head, we keep getting free donuts. It costs us nothing, we get awesome photos, fir0002 gets some recognition and improves his skills, there's really no downside here. Stevage 22:57, 11 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I really don't have time for this junk --Fir0002 05:12, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

One question regarding your FP noms

I checked out several of your current FP noms, and none of the ones I looked at had the <!-- additional votes go above this line --> included. Is there any reason why you haven't been including this line? Raven4x4x 01:03, 13 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Oh if you look back far enough you'll notice I never did - back in the old days they never used it and I never got into the habit. I can do that if it makes any difference for you - personally I don't see it doing much --Fir0002 05:16, 13 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

And this as well.... Raven4x4x 02:27, 13 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

On the Frog nomination, a straight count of the votes gives 7:4, which isn't quite 2/3. If you count weak votes as half, you get 6:3, which is exactly 2/3. I don't use an exact numerical cut off myself, but I generally tend to look for a little more than a 2/3 majority after [discussion], where a few people suggested that 10:6 or 10:5 was a little close to be promoting. Of course I won't mind if you seek a second opinion, but that's my reasoning.
As for the "all comments above this link", I occasionally find comments left below that line and below the {{-}} template. This leaves an annoying gap, as seen here. I know it isn't a big deal, and people still leave comments there even with the notice, but it might help most people place comments in the right spot. Raven4x4x 09:20, 13 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fuzzy Zoeller edit controversy

Hello, there. As you may or may not know, the Miami Herald recently revealed that professional golfer Fuzzy Zoeller has filed a lawsuit against Josef Silny & Associates, Inc. for adding false statements to his Wikipedia biography.

For data gathering purposes, an SRS of 20 administrators has been created, you being one of them. I would like you to comment on this situation and its possible implications to Wikipedia, the accused company, and the general welfare of the community in general. (To what extent will this impact Wikipedia? To what extent will this impact those who use Wikipedia often? To what extent is the company guilty? Who do you believe is at fault?) Feel free to comment however you wish. I ask that you email me your responses via my emailuser page so as to reduce bias in your responses. (Again, don't post your responses on my talk page.)

The following are articles from various news agencies that you may use to inform yourself about the situation: Miami Herald, Herald Tribune, Web Pro News, The Smoking Gun.

I thank you for taking your time to express your opinion. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at any time. Jaredtalk18:22, 23 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

House Sparrow

cannot see any grounds for the change in the main image - previous one was much better quality (an FP actually))

It is extremely poor etiquette to promote your own images, if yours was superior I'm sure others will revert it. The image in the infobox is not the 'main image' on the page, it is an illustrative thumbnail of the species. Normally the male of the species has more distinctive plumage and is used to illustrate the species. The image I put in, is I think a painting, and clearly shows the features of the species at thumbnail size. Wikipedia is not your personal gallery. I shall replace the image with the superior illustration. If you still disagree, how about we discuss it on the House Sparrow talk page? --AGoon 08:39, 18 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Found this image being used here: http://www.allhome.biz/contactus.html. Don't know if they've contacted you for additional licensing terms or if he just swiped it and isn't complying under the terms of the GFDL, but I thought you'd want to know. howcheng {chat} 17:00, 6 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. are you sure about the species identification? I Googled "meat eater ant" (which is how I found that other page) and the only pages that seem to have this term are Wikimedia pages and mirrors. The reason I ask is because I was writing the POTD caption for Image:Meat eater ant qeen excavating hole.jpg and was trying to find more information about it. Thanks. howcheng {chat} 17:12, 6 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I was intending to nominate this as a FP on Commons, but I think it would run into difficulties as the file size is rather small. Would you be prepared to upload a larger image? --MichaelMaggs 16:13, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I can understand your wish not to give away for free images that might bring you an income, but I wonder if you'd be prepared to continue uploading at at least 1000x2000 to ensure you're eligible for Commons Featured Pictures? I would have thought that having lots of FPs in your portfolio could only help in advertising your work, particularly since it's good enough to make the top few in the POTY competition. Image sizes of 1600x1066, 512Mb, as with Image:Baby goats jan 2007.jpg is I fear going to be too small to get past most FP reviewers, as there aren't good 'mitigating reasons'. I do hope you'll reconsider, as the 2007 POTY competition won't be as good without your macro shots in it ! --MichaelMaggs 13:53, 19 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

globemaster, mantis, podcast

Hey there!

1) What do you think of this pic Image:C17virginia.jpg. It's getting mixed reviews at Commons:FP because of noise and the blob halfway up the tail of the lead plane. Do you think you could clean it up and for possible FP candidacy?

2) That's an interesting shot of the Praying Mantis' head you've got at FPC - but why didn't you nominate the full body shot you've got at your user-page instead. It's a much better representation of a Mantis! Why don't you swap nominations?

3) Are you still up for a little chat on the podcast? I didn't see you during the week that you said you were free. Are you still around?

Interested in hosting a bot?

Since you're an admin on both Wikipedia and Commons, I wonder if you might be interested in hosting a MainPage image protection bot. As I see it, the bot would only need to put mprotected on MainPage images and then set a 24 hour protection at Commons. I'm not a programming person, so I couldn't do this myself, but I believe that this is something that could be done with relative ease. What do you think? Would you be interested in hosting a bot if we could get someone to write it? Should we put up something at Wikipedia:Bot requests? Thanks.--Pharos 07:26, 21 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Um I guess I could do it, but I have no idea how and I really have very little time these days so I don't think I'll be learning it. If it's just a simple process you want me to do, no problem just give me the details. --Fir0002 08:50, 21 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

FPC has become very negatively charged lately and I've noticed your images have been a target of irrational and spiteful opposition, but try not to let it get to you. Studio photography

Hey, just wondering, with your studio photography-like shots (e.g. the tomato photo currently on FPC), how do you get such a perfectly white background? Is it done in photoshop, or do you use a really, really white table? Thanks. enochlau (talk) 02:39, 6 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nothing special, I really want to get an umbrella flash at some point, but currently just use a white piece of photographic low gloss paper (not satin, or matte, just low level glossing) --Fir0002 09:58, 12 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there

I found your lovely pics when I went to upload one of a quince flower and saw a) you were already there and b) yours was miles better anyway. I've checked out your gallery and I think your images are superb. Well done you. Now, I have a request (and that wasn't why I was being so flattering there ...!). I've just posted a question at the Uploading Images talk page, but when I looked at the history it's been a week since anyone posted anything there, so I'm not sure how soon (if ever) I'll get a response. So I thought I'd ask you instead, as you clearly know what's what. Here's what I posted:

  • Earlier today I uploaded a pic I took, Darmera_peltata.JPG, (on the Darmera page) but I've just realised that the image is the wrong way round - the stem of the flower is going off at 90 degrees to the right, rather than vertically down to the bottom of the frame. My photographic skills are strictly limited to 'point' and 'click', and I know nothing about how to manipulate/crop/rotate images - could some kind and knowledgable soul here fiddle with the image so that the flower stem is the right way round?

So do you think you could help me, kind Peter? Jasper33 21:25, 9 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the compliment, but looks like I've come too late for the pic - Thegreenj has done it for you! Sorry bout that! --Fir0002 09:57, 12 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image:Dawn over swifts creek panorama edit.jpg

Hello Fir, I am currently making some French translations of the captions of the featured pictures. This panorama is doubtlessly stunning, but the caption is a bit short - especially for a featured picture. So where is Swift Creek? I suppose it's in Australia but Australia is a bit large... And what is it? the creek at the bottom of this valley or the small town? It is especially important to be more precise on this in new-world places with english, spanish or French based descriptive names like "Swifts creek" or "Taylor hill", etc., since there are Thouthand of them dispached on three continents at least... The date the picture was taken can also be interesting. Berru 14:52, 20 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image licensing

Thanks for the reminder, I really should get round to sorting something out. I'm in the same boat as you re commercial use. I just looked at the template you use and that's basically what I was trying to say ("email me to negotiate terms") – I also notice you only use the GFDL 1.2 (no CC license). What's the thinking behind that?
mikaultalk 08:18, 6 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Fir, that's kind of what I thought. I was looking at GFDL templates to standardise the way I license things and wondering how you got yourself a personalised version..? Can you just copy/paste the existing code and add your own bits on the end? I've got a fair few things ready to upload but I want something in place before I start changing stuff. Tambo Valley Races for Textbook

Hi. My name is Noah Berlatsky. I work at the American School, a high school that offers courses through the mail (www.americanschoolofcorr.com). We are developing an Algebra course at the moment, and I'd like to include your picture of the Tambo Valley Racers [9] in our study materials. The picture is licensed under the GNU, so I need to credit you — but to do that I need your name. Could you let me know what it is so I can properly credit you? Jeez Fir, you really went all out with your wildlife photography in January.. One thing though, this image looks far too saturated. The lower sky/smoke has a purple tint. Diliff | (Talk) (Contribs) 08:38, 6 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Heh, thanks - I was very mindful that I probably wouldn't get another chance for photography until the first term holidays (I've got another decent batch then too) so I tried to take as many as I could. But with the fire photo, I actually reprocessed it with better saturation (I forgot to convert the Adobe color space to SRGB when I uploaded last time) because it really was like that. The sky was this unreal purple colour. No joke - if you can see a purple tint than that's good because it certainly had it during the fires!! --Fir0002 07:49, 7 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Could just be the monitor I'm using at work though... just realised its the same image I saw earlier this year and didn't notice it being too saturated at the time. Diliff | (Talk) (Contribs) 08:44, 6 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Adding a sense of scale

I want to take the opportunity to offer some feedback of my opinion on some of your featured picture submissions. Basically, you do great work, as I'm sure you know. However, one of the inherent problems with studio photography of unknown objects is a lack of a sense of scale. For example, the spider I commented on could be the 25 mm it actually is or 1 foot long tarantula - from the picture and caption alone we cannot tell. In general, I think the technique of adding a very well-known item to the composition is a very useful trick. Some objects I have used before and have also seen in other places include: well-known coins (often American); soda cans (covering up copyrighted labels for this purpose); an actual ruler segment (10 cm length, with inches as well); an AA battery; and I am sure you can think of many more. An alternative is to place a discrete scale on the image when processing it in Photoshop. Finally, if you do not like any of these ideas, I believe the caption should include how big the object is. (The Latin Name grasshopper, about 5 cm in length...). Please let me know your thoughts. Zakolantern 23:05, 5 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think a battery or coin would ruin the FP chances, but I think Fir's (your) current version with the perspective ruler is very very neat! Is my intuition right, though, that with such a macro shot, the perspective distortion will be very little, and if 100px=1mm at the front of the object then 100px will be pretty close to 1mm at the back? If so, then a subtle little bar off to the side, as in my hadrosaur family tree image would work for all of your photo. By the way, how do you herd a deadly spider into your studio without freakin out? Debivort 06:56, 6 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah I might try that scale in the future, but I was quite pleased with the way mine came out. --Fir0002 07:46, 7 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Nerves of steel! Nah it help a lot that she seemed pretty out of it. We'd been having heavy rains (and indeed flooding) and I found her floating in a puddle trying to get out with not much energy (cold day). So she was probably pretty exhausted so that help. I also had my brother close by with a plastic disposable glass ready to lower it over the spider if it got agitated.
    • I personally agree with Debivort - having the perspective be slightly off would be acceptable and might look better. However, the way you did the scale is cool too, and obviously a more difficult solution to implement in Photoshop. Zakolantern 22:55, 6 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You've really been home to some interesting natural phenomena lately. Drought, fire, flooding... Diliff | (Talk) (Contribs) 08:24, 16 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

lol, you forgot freezing! Yeah we have had a pretty interesting year really. No, unfortunately I haven't really seen any of that, I suspect you'd need to be more south than where I am where it really flooded (Bairnsdale etc).--Fir0002 08:04, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, its funny because although England is a pretty small country, the weather tends to be very localised. Apart from it absolutely teeming down on Friday afternoon (and by about 5pm it was just light fluffy clouds and sunny!). Hasn't affected me at all since. If that sort of flooding hit central London, it would be on a scale far worse than New Orleans, let me tell you.. :-) Diliff | (Talk) (Contribs) 10:25, 23 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image source problem with Image:Wheat in sack.jpg

Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:Wheat in sack.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 11:45, 19 July 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Liftarn 11:45, 19 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Tomato Photo Request

I sent you the below in an e-mail yesterday. I am also posting it here: Hello there and thank you for your time and help in advance. As an inside joke, I would love to mail my girlfriend a copy of your tomato featured picture, printed on photo paper at 8x10" size. To do this, I should really use a higher resolution image than the ones you choose to upload to Wikipedia. I was hoping you would allow me to do this by e-mailing me a full-size version of that image (I have the appropriate printing gear). I agree with your reasoning for not posting higher resolution images in general by the way.

I agree to not print no more than two copies of the image, to not use it for any commercial purpose, and to not use it in any digital form or in any digital medium.

Thanks a lot, and I would be very grateful, Zachary Last Name In E-mail Zakolantern on Wikipedia Zakolantern on AIM Z@ch@ryRD AT gm@il DOT com on GChat and e-mail

Your reasons for you to keep Crepuscular rays

Hi Mbz1,
Please ensure to provide reasons for your edits - as I mentioned the (small) article is already saturated with images, I retained two of your better ones but the others were redundant. Wikipedia is not a gallery, that's what the commons is for --Fir0002 08:40, 4 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your reasons, however I removed them again. As previously mentioned the quality is far below the other images in the article, and for such a small article there is already more than enough images (wikipedia is not gallery). The all sky crepscular rays are not rare, I've seen a few myself and a quick google search comes up plenty of examples (eg [10] [11]). The tree image is unnecessary, such types are not mentioned in the article, it belongs in the commons. There are many such images available on the net [12] [13] [14] [15] because crepscular rays are obvious subject choices for photographs. That is why the article only includes the very best wiki has to offer, and I'm sorry, but your images are just too low quality without any over riding reason in their favour. --Fir0002 01:47, 5 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Please consider leaving this thread intact for a few days as I was unable to put in all my reasoning into the 200 character limit of the edit summary. --Fir0002 01:54, 5 August 2007 (UTC)--Mbz1 02:44, 5 August 2007 (UTC)Mbz1[reply]

Hi Fir0002/Archive 5,
do you have a higher resoluted version Image:Sparrow on ledge.jpg?
I'm asking, because if you have a version which's resolution is at least 2 Mio pix. it could become a featured picture.

Your hoverfly photo on Flickr

Peter, in regards to that hoverfly image of yours that has been uploaded to flickr here and here, if you haven't already you should try the 'report abuse' link on those pages. One of the categories is "someone has uploaded photos that I have taken". It can easily be proved that you uploaded it to commons long before those two uploaded it to flickr so there is no question who is in the right. I strongly suggest you do this if you haven't already. License tagging for Image:EIAJconnector2 blemish.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:EIAJconnector2 blemish.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 13:05, 10 September 2007 (UTC)

Motorbikes

Umm, can't remember - you can't read it on any of them I don't guess? I would think, going on the size of the engine in the photo, and the way they were being used, that they were 250s, but I'm no motorbike expert. --jjron 08:57, 24 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, wondering where all your noms were! Could be worth trying, it's a little motion blurred, and that bit where the number would go at the front looks a bit blown. But, if that's all you've got with you, could be worth a shot. Any other good ones? --jjron 09:18, 24 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I really like that shot with green bike much better. Is that the one that that guy in the comment up above has identified the rider for? And if so, can it go in his article too, assuming he has one? I see what you mean about sharpness, but on the other hand that other shonky motorbike pic got through a few weeks back, and this is no less sharp than that was. Wind turbines - mmm, I don't really think anything we got there quite does it as FP, but you never know; I was half considering going via there on the way to Melbourne to try again, see if there was somewhere to get a really good shot. --jjron 09:38, 24 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Graphics Lab Announcement

Attention All Wikigraphists!

As you may or may have not noticed, the Graphics Lab pages have gone under a massive cleanup by User:DTR, User:Rugby471 and various others (sorry if I missed you out). Some of the things that have happened are.

  • All pages in the Graphics Lab have had, where sensible, templates, substituting elements. For example, the main Lab page was a large chunk of around 100 lines of pure code. It was not very easy to edit the main page, so the various sections of it (eg links, welcome) have been separated. Therefore the main page is now only around 20 lines of user friendly text. If you wish to edit the main page, you must look on the main page for the correct template to edit. (Fore example if I wanted to edit the links section, I would go to Wikipedia:Graphic Lab/links and edit the text there). This has been done to all of the pages, in an attempt to make them more user-friendly.

  • As you were notified of early, the Wikigraphist Abilities page has been set up and has been beginning to get populated. If you haven't already setup your own entry, you are advised to go and do so now.

  • Due to a comment from User:DTR. A template for Graphics Lab announcements has been created. It is at Wikipedia:Graphic Lab/announcement. If you ever need to issue a message to Wikigraphists, please use this template in the form

{{Wikipedia:Graphic Lab/announcement|message ~~~~}}

Where message is the announcement you wish to issue.

As always, if you experience any issues with the new changes, or are just a bit confused, please don't hesitate to contact me or DTR on our talk pages.

Image:Quality comaprison jpg vs saveforweb.jpg

Interesting concept for an image! Sorry to be critical, but there's a few things that need pointing out.

1. Your description has several errors:

1a. "As can bee seen ..." should read "As can be seen ..."

1b. "Also save for web jpg images generally have a larger file size until jpg quality = 7 and SFW = 67 when SFW becomes larger in size."
- should read (note the two corrections) -
"Also save for web jpg images generally have a smaller file size until jpg quality = 7 and SFW = 58 when SFW becomes larger in size."

2. When choosing "Save As", you've allowed PhotoShop to save the images with additional "extras", which make the comparisons look worse than they should. Doing this on my system, with "Thumbnail" and "ICC Profile" un-ticked in the "Save As" dialog, it produced files approximately 16Kb smaller than each of yours. I don't have exact figures because I didn't have your exact source image, nor did I have your exact filesize figures, only the points on the graph.

Hopefully you can either re-create the image or at least amend the description for a more meaningful result. Ian Fieggen 23:39, 1 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No unfortunately I don't have any more details of the rider etc. I took it at a come and try/race day of the Lakes MX club so he's just a teen hobby rider --Fir0002 22:26, 9 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, that's a pity, but thanks for replying anyway. It's a very good pic, though, so it may yet be used somewhere. I was browsing through your gallery after posting here and your work is quite impressive; you have a natural eye for composition. Adrian M. H. 23:30, 9 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You're absolutely right about that image, sorry about that. Two mistakes made. I did the editing on a laptop with a crappy low-saturation screen and it looked a bit more normal, but viewing it again on my work monitor (not much better but usable), it does look overcooked... Also, I didn't mean to overwrite your edit. I forgot that the FP version was yours. I'm sure I can find the middle ground in terms of saturation. You're welcome to re-upload a less saturated version over the top of it if you like. As for my HDR technique, nothing fancy - just Photomatix and the latest version of PTgui will do HDR tone mapping, although it won't work with multi-processed single images, they have to be of a bracketed sequence, whereas Photomatix does. As for that Clapham 360, it actually wasn't HDR at all (and for the record neither was this one, which you asked about and I just realised I never replied to. It was just a single (non bracketed) image sequence processed from RAW (which incidentally I still recommend!!). Diliff | (Talk) (Contribs) 10:23, 9 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

In terms of quality image, I won't point fingers accusing ignorance, however, seeing it as just a simple cartoon that anyone could make up is under appreciating the creativity and skill of creating such an image. A person has to look beyond the comparison to a photograph. Your photos are amazing, very high quality and one can take pride in such work. Your strong sentiment against Wikipe-tan, though, stems from that. I had stated that I hoped people would avoid those feelings where a person may feel insulted because a "cartoon" is being featured among quality photographs, for example such as your own. You don't have to prove their worth to me in stating that offers by university. I can clearly see they are great images. I, again, understand yet disagree and hope that judgements are based on the quality of creativity and magnitude of the art done. Like you, I am a photographer myself though clearly no match for what you've done. As well I do image editing and drawing, and based on those experiences and trials I can appreciate Wikipe-tan above the fact it's anime. As for the aliasing issue, a simple vector of her will do just fine. If you don't know already, vectoring will immediately take out any and all distortion issues in a very small amount of time, which is why I said it's not a big issue. Working to fix a photograph is entirely harder than working on a character image. If you are able to grasp that much then you can see where I'm coming from in my response. I apologize for not explaining it further so you wouldn't feel so passionate about it. Fox816 02:20, 1 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
If you take some careful time in reading your first response, calling my validation stupid (though not explicitly saying my own though it is in clear reference to me) is an indirect personal attack, ontop of the ignorance claim. Again I apologize for not being more detailed so you wouldn't get so fired up and ask you be more calm and patient the next time around. I should also clarify that being, printed I see is a wrong word, rather featured gives credibility to the image. Wikipe-tan was in fact featured/portrayed (whichever since printed is too broad) in the media to represent Wikipedia. As such that is credit, very good credit which would be true enough for any image in such position. Fox816 18:06, 1 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Possible image mis-use

Just a heads-up. I was using StumbleUpon and ran across this site which makes use of a thumbnail version of your mating hoverflies picture with no credit given to you. Granted, it's not the most egregious mis-use ever, but since I knew the image from the Featured Pictures pages (I should really get back there, it's been awhile) I figured I'd let you know. :) --Dante Alighieri | Talk 19:22, 13 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Id of skipper in image placed by you

Hi, we have recently been plagued by misidentifications of Darts and other skippers, some looking just like the one you placed at Skipper. The Skippersare an exceptionally difficult group to identify. Please confirm whether you had the image identification checked by a lepidopterologist. In case not, may I request that this be done. This is very important from Wikipedia's reliability point of view.

I also take this opprtunity to thank you for providing images for Lepidoptera articles. AshLin (talk) 13:44, 22 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

FPC Issues

Fir, don't let the nitpicking at FPC get you down, It's gotten so pointless nowadays that I don't spend that much time there myself anymore. Apparently a lot of these people don't know good photography when it's shown right to them. Anyway, it happens and I hope you continue to keep putting such great shots up on FPC. Sparrow image used in gorrion.info

Greetings.

I wanted to tell you I have used your home sparrow image (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:House_sparrowIII.jpg) in my web site (gorrion.info). Gorrión is the Spanish Language word for sparrow.

I tried to take some photographs from sparrows, but didn't have any acceptable results. Your photos, in contrast, are REALLY EXCELENT.

Given the Wikipedia material is under LGPL license, I guess there is no problem about using it elsewhere. Anyway I'm giving mention to you in the image's title, and in the license page.
Could be translated like this:
title: Header made from image gifted by http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Fir0002 to the Wikipedia. Thanks, Peter!
License: Header's Sparrow image: The photograph the favicon and the header are based on is taken from the Wikipedia. It's autor is photographer Peter, from Australia. This content is under the LGPL 2 license.

If you notice something is incorrect about it please tell me. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.77.163.169 (talk) 20:39, 26 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Peter, just wanted to say, contrary to appearances, that I was glad to see your moth FPC get promoted today.. I seem to be particularly combative these days, I'm like a dog with a bone. Must be getting my period or something. So long as you know it's nothing personal. Keep up the good work. --mikaultalk 15:17, 28 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Within reason, its good to be feisty I think. Better to stand your ground on issues that are important to you than to pander to consensus. That said, you have to pick your fights carefully or you end up stepping on everyone's toes. :-) Diliff | (Talk) (Contribs) 22:47, 28 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

One Laptop per Child

Hi Fir. I saw this and wanted to point it out to you because I think its cool. Since the display in question is obviously a screenshot, and includes your credit, I'm hoping it's not, or that at least you don't consider it a violation of your copy left, although it technically doesn't appear to have the text of the GNU license with it. One Laptop per Child uses a wikipedia POTD feed screen shot with your clerid beetle image as its example of newsgroup browsing. Nice shot.. :-) I was thinking about doing something like that a while ago but you've re-inspired me. How did you blend it? Was it manual? I suspect using an auto blender would probably not work very well with the colour shift from midday to sunrise/sunset since it tends to correct it whenever possible. FPC captions

I saw your statement on FPC captions and I'd like to suggest a solution to the problem. It seems it is the template that's really the root of the problem, (not just a bunch of dumb editors) so perhaps the best strategy would be to make one or more minor changes to its language. Changing Proposed caption to Optional extended caption, or something along those lines, might do the trick.

Most editors are well-intentioned, and are just looking to other noms as examples. Are we all just idiots who don't read/understand the nuances of the FP criteria, or is something else the matter? Rather than telling us how we're wrong and telling us what not to do, a better solution might be to set up an example page, which shows the right way to do things. People follow examples, so set a good one. Jeff Dahl (Talkcontribs) 20:03, 10 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

OK that's a fair point - not everyone voting on the page is going to have an intimate understanding of how it works and will just follow examples. But I have commented quite strongly on several of my nominations about the low importance of an extended caption but it has been largely ignored (hence the creation of the more detailed page). Your suggestion is quite good and I think I'll have a go at modifying the template and making an example page (although as I said I think my caption length is more or less right) some time today. Thanks, --Fir0002 22:00, 10 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, sounds good, if you can tell me what to do, or how to fix (remove) it if it causes something odd like the other one did. He can't make it so that it 'migrates' down the page as you scroll can he? - that'd be pretty cool. Cheers, --jjron (talk) 09:10, 13 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Question. See my signature above - it now shows a link to my talk page. It didn't used to, and I don't know what I've changed. I thought maybe Wiki changed the default behaviour of signatures or something, but I notice that yours still just shows just your username. Any ideas? --jjron (talk) 09:12, 13 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The way you wrote it initially you said "...at the bottom of the side bar", which I thought meant when you got to the bottom of a long page, it was there 'at the bottom of the side bar'. Anyway, that's good. It sits almost on top of 'User contributions' when at the top of the page (you may not have noticed with your bigger screen?). Anyway, I'll give it a try, I don't think that will matter much about sitting on top of the other links because you can use both, it looks useful. Thanks for that.
Re the sig, I've checked my User Prefs to try to fix this, but it's just set to the default signature. That's why I don't get why it's started displaying differently. You've never changed yours from the default have you?
Did you get the email about the VicPhysics comp? I sent it to you yesterday, but your name was also on the CC list of the original message, so I thought you would have already had it. --jjron (talk) 03:53, 14 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
OK, had a bit of a play with the parameters in the code; it's good now, pretty much dodges any text in the sidebar (though funny, it disappears under the languages box on FPC). --jjron (talk) 04:03, 14 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah I used to have a link to flagstaffotos in my sig, but got rid of it as it caused a stink on my RFA. Maybe wikimedia has added that bit to all users who've never changed their sig? Change yours to something else and then change it back and see what happens.
:) As you guessed it fits perfectly on my screen
I found the vicphyiscs email - gmail had filed it as spam. Be interesting to see what the payout is! --Fir0002 06:41, 14 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Oh yeah, quite a bit different on your screen. Funny thing to pick up as spam. BTW your userpage says 97 FPs; I thought you said 98? Better get it right! --jjron (talk) 07:38, 21 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
