Jarchas

Hola, Error, he visto las plantillas que pusiste en los artículos relativos a Jarcha, para refundirlos. Ya he expuesto en la discusión de la página que sería un error (y eso que no sabía tu nombre:-) el fundirlo en el artículo "Kharja,, part of a Moaxaja", porque la jarcha posee una identidad proia muy fuerte, y es en muchos casos generadora de la moaxaja, y no al revés. Mi propuesta es que quede como único artículo Jarcha, y que los otros te lleven a él. O bien Kharja, pero no sé porqué primar la grafía árabe frante a la occidental, si la wikipedia es inglesa. Además, para el mundo árabe la jarcha es una anécdota sin importancia y en cambio, en la Península Ibérica significa el comienzo de nuestra literatura. En cualquier caso, he ampliado la entrada Jarcha, y he incorporado el contenido de las otras dos, así que está (creo) preparada para hacer la fusión. Pero no sé cómo hacerlo, sólo llevo un par de meses en Wikipedia y no domino si hay que consultarlo, si lo tiene que hacer un bibliotecario o si simplemente se hace y ya está. Como tú propusiste la fusión, creo que es adecuado consultártelo.

Knowledge of Spanish in Catalonia

Can you possibly help out with my question at Talk:Catalonia#Language? So far, the only answer I've gotten is basically that I'm a "bastard" and should "die" for conjecturing that nearly all Catalans can speak Spanish. Reverted changes on ETA

Hi there.

Hey, I just can't find those changes I made in the entry ETA which you have deleted or reverted: where did they go?. It is kinda frustrating that those minutes I spent trying to make the entry more neutral have been wasted. I am not interested at all in posting again my changes only to see you removing them after, I have better things to do and if the ETA entry in wikipedia keeps being a biased one in favouring the Basque nationalist point of view...well, my life will be pretty much the same.

However I would like someone to warn right away in the top part of it that this entry is discussed por NPOV issues and I don't know how to do it by myself (I'm pretty much a dummy when it comes to computers). It would be nice if you did that of yourself. You can look at it this way: the entry will still call, as you wish, bombings, kidnappings and assassinations "armed struggle" by a "paramilitary organization" instead of a terrorist organization. So you will keep your point of view saved and, on the other side, if you help me by introducing that header saying that the content of the entry is disputed for NPOV reasons, I will be less frustrated.

If you are not willing to help with this, I would like -if possible- some kind of neutral guy to look into this. Again, I am kind of a dummy and I just don't know how to start a discussion about an entry.

Looks like Mr. POV has taken some vacations from the ETA article (I surrendered first, though). Since I am afraid to awake the troll myself, would you go and mend the most obvious gaffes? I'm thinking, for example of the goal of self determination only for the southern Basque country (which is not true) and things of the like. As I say, I would do it myself and I will if you don't feel heroic enough to do this (something which I could understand) but I am just afraid that I could awake the Beast... Categories on Pictures.

As you know, I removed the categories that were on Image:Kamikaze-ManchesterMSI.jpg. I did this because it was causing the image to appear on the category page, for example Category:Visitor attractions in Greater Manchester.

I think only articles should be given a category and not images, but I could not find any definite policy on this. I will not change that page again, I will leave that to your judgement. MortimerCat 02:19, 8 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the heads-up on Abraham Olano. I tend to change names when there are two (or more) used on Wikipedia, and the version with the diacrit is usually the correct one! I wonder if you culd check out a couple I am not sure of: Angel Casero (es:Ángel Casero} and Miguel Indurain (sometimes spelt Miguel Induráin). All Olano's now point to the correct version. Vascones

Hi, Error. Are you sure that the singular of Vascones is Vasco and not Vascon or something like that. For what I remember from my own Latin course in High School, vascones is plural of some declination by addition of the suffix -es (like in modern Spanish for instance), not any -nes suffix. In standard Spanish at least the used singular of Vascones is always Vascon and Vasco (i.e. Basque looks a deformation, not the original).

Checking in the Latin declension article, I find atrox, atroces, agilis, agiles, celer, celeres, etc. Nowhere you find a -nes suffix added but at most -es. It could be Vascon or Vasconis but hardly Vasco, that must belong to Romance.

Note that many third-declension Latin names do add a final "n" to their nominative forms before taking on the endings for the other cases. So origo (origin) -> origines; coniunctio -> coniunctiones. They are all words ending in o in the nominative (not us), just like Vasco, Vascones. Fotos 20 minutos

Hola Error!

Me avisaste de la posibilidad de que las fotos que descargué desde la página del periódico 20 MINUTOS, pudieran infringir la normativa de copyright. Y de hecho, se ha eliminado la de Helena Resano y alguna otra. La verdad estoy un poco despistado. De la lectura de la autorización dada por el periódico, se deduce que es posible usar las fotos salvo que estén atribuidas a un fotógrafo concreto o a una Agencia. No era el caso. Por seguridad ¿jurídica? (y por qué no, para no perder el tiempo!), me gustaría saber si puedes aclararme cuál es el criterio a seguir (y si tu no puedes, me indiques la forma o el procedimiento para averiguarlo).

Greetings Error, I went and changed all of the Image:GernikakoArbola.jpg links with Image:Gernikatree.jpg links (except for your user page) because the new picture is much more pleasing and is the new tree in place instead of the old tree which was taken down. Bueno, no te entiendo demasiado, pero aquí el problema está en que han borrado la plantilla. No es que mis fotos incumplieran lo que la plantilla decía, ni que el concepto de simplicidad de los tribunales fuera ambiguo; es que directamente la plantilla no existe. I do not intend at this point to make any textual alterations, but if comments are made which are NOT justified, be prepared to state your sources now.

Basque-Icelandic pidgin

Greetings Error. Please recheck your sources regarding this article as I have a bad feeling they might be outdated. The Arnemagnæan Collection was previously located at the University of Copenhagen (Denmark) but this collection was divided between Denmark and Iceland in the early 1970s. Most of the old collection is now located in Reykjavik, Iceland (The Árni Magnusson Institute [2]) and a smaller portion is kept in Copenhagen, Denmark. (Den Arnamagnæanske Samling[3]) I've no idea if the manuscripts you refer to are located in Iceland or Denmark, but the current text places the University of Copenhagen in the wrong country. Hola! Sí marqué la foto para borrado porque además de que es un duplicado (ya existe en Image:Remiro I d'Aragón.jpg) el título es erroneo, es decir pone que la foto pertenece a Sancho III, pero en realidad el personaje que aparece en la foto es Ramiro I. Could you possibly look in on the current discussion at Talk:Bombing of Guernica? I finally got the anon who keeps placing the lower casualty figures into discussion. It looks like he may really have something, but his notion of citing is really weak. Basque country (greater region)

Hi Error. Just recently someone pointed out that Basque Country (historical territory) was no apt naming. I agree with that, even though the new name we ended up with is not that exciting after all. Only now I remember about you and I think it would have been good that you said your word there.

But my question is regarding something else, not the name. It is about the flag. An anon has inserted the ikurriña as the Euskal Herria one. I know for a fact that it is used outside of the Basque Autonomous Community....my question is, which is the status of the Navarrese flag among Basque abertzales? they frown upon its sight? they kinda tolerate it? they burn it?

I think one of the worst kept secrets of Basque nationalism is that whatever historic background it could have should be found in Navarre (Kingdom of Navarre, etc) not in the back then happy-to-be-posh-Spain Vascongadas...but I would like to hear from you how the guys cope with this situation...

There are those that hold that the BAC is part of the maritime Navarre, a precedent of a greater Basque state. As such, the flag of Navarre could be used as a flag for the whole of it. It has also its use as a symbol of Navarrese pesonality in a Basque state. At the same time, the Arrano Beltza is thought by some as a more authentic symbol. (There is a song by Mikel Laboa mentioning it, check the Arrano article.)

That was a good tip to make a flickr search. Indeed I found one isolated Navarrese flag in this and that picture (or was it Occitan? not sure, as this one also appeared at some particular abertzale rally...dont ask me why) so, with this ridiculously small sample, I am guessin that one every 10 flags could be the Navarrese one, even though, as you aptly point out, it may be a higher turnout at Navarre itself. Comuneros and the Flag of the Spanish Republic

Interesting addition to the article. I submitted it to Featured Article Candidates awhile back, but got nebulous complaints about prose. Anyway, do you have a reference for that claim? Every notable sentence is currently referenced as is, and it is an A-Class article as it stands, so I just want to be sure to keep it that way. My recollection is that the purple = Comuneros idea comes much later in the 19th century, and that there's no evidence there was a purple flag raised at Villalar (except centuries later). that a lengthy addition or the creation of a new sub-section can add inappropriate weight to just one aspect of a topic.

Your addition to Islamic influences on Western art added a whole, new Major heading just to make the point that Islamic carpets were used in Transylvania. You gave it the heading Transylvania which is completely out of context with all the other headings in the Table of Contents. The only country that has a heading is Spain. Why is this? Because much of Spain was under Islamic rule during the period covered in this article, and therefore Islamic art prevailed in that European country.

If you were a new editor, I'd fix this by incorporating your edits, but since you are not, I am going to leave it to you to find the right location for you valuable info in the article.

Here is the material: Transylvania Rich Protestant Transylvanian Saxon merchants traded with the Ottoman Empire and often donated Anatolian rugs to their churches as a vertical decoration more according to their iconoclastic beliefs than the images of the saints used by the Catholics and the Orthodox. In fact, ALTEN company for which I speak is undergoes vandalism attacks on wikipedia page (of company and its CEO himself) about a dispute (justified or not, it is not yet the problem here) between country management in Spain and works committee. As community manager of ALTEN, I sent an alert to these users to ask to stop it, following Wikipedia policy and process. They have continued to attack our pages and I need to intervene each day. Strange. In Spanish, it should be Cuarterón, with an accent, as in Apostólico. Image 365 seems to use Cuarteron again.

The archive itself has Cuarteroni y Fernandez, Carlos, 1816-1880 though the book is labelled as Spanish when the title is Italian.

The Spanish Real Academia de la Historia uses Carlos Cuarteroni Fernández. The article is written by Alicia Castellano, the author of Cuarteroni's biography.

Unless you can find that the most used form in English-language bibliography is Cuarteron, I think it should stay as Cuarteroni. If he usually used Cuarteron in English, it should be noted, though.

@Stuartyeates:: BCP47 is formally described in https://www.rfc-editor.org/info/bcp47 . There is no ready-made code for Moriori in the subtag registry, but we can construct one using the U extension. Moriori can be considered a dialect of Maori or Maori-Moriori. The registry says that mi is for Maori. -u- is for the U extension. TR35 defines what can come after U. In this case, we want to apply an Unicode subdivision identifier, so it is marked by sd:

A unicode_subdivision_id, which is a unicode_region_subtag concatenated with a unicode_subdivision_suffix.

In this case we want the Chatham Islands, where Moriori was spoken. The region subtag is NZ for New Zealand. The subdivision code for Chatham is nzcit (from "Chatham Islands Territory"?). Putting all together, mi-u-sd-nzcit is, approximately, "Maori as spoken in the Chathams" (The standards people will clarify that is not the exact meaning, but it is something similar). As far as I know, there is no code to distinguish Moriori from the possible dialectal Maori spoken now in the Chathams. If somebody really wants a specific variant tag for Moriori, they could apply for mi-moriori or mi-mimorio or something similar at the ietf-languages list doing the light paperwork (lighter than applying for an ISO-639 code).

For private use you can use mi-x-whatevr if you want. mi-u-sd-nzcit is more in line withe the standards.

Adding obscure/legacy CJK Unicode encodings

Hello. I see you have been adding lots of "compatibility" Unicode characters for things like the katakana "mile" マイル drawn inside a single character box. I do not think these are a worthwhile addition to WP. Unicode is a bureaucratic organisation: its job is to ensure that "characters" found in legacy documents etc can be represented within Unicode. In some cases these may be explicitly deprecated, in some cases they may be totally erroneous (so-called "ghost kanji"); so they are not noteworthy. (We do not for example list all the ways in which all non-American languages cope with idiocies like using archaic units for air traffic control.) @Imaginatorium: I think it is worth it to have an article or a redirection to an article for each Unicode character. If they are deprecated or erroneous, people who find them would like to know.

Sometimes our target articles are not very informative, but pointing readers to a related article is better that nothing, I think.

Perhaps most of the CJK characters would be better served with a redirect to Wiktionary, but others could have a redirect to the corresponding article. Thanks for the responses. My point is much more basic than "whether we need to add the Japanese for 'mile' to the article"; my answer to that would be "No". (As Fram said above.) But if we did, we would say "In Japanese the mile is known as マイル, a katakana phonetic rendering." The Unicode character you cite is legacy/deprecated/whatever, and is absolutely not the normal way to write マイル; rather, it is a crude typographical kludge to fit the three characters into a single character space. I don't know definitively, but it should be possible in modern typesetting software to create any required "tiny character" block in software - the list of available unit names in the Unicode legacy set is bound to be limited to an ad hoc collection compiled by an enthusiast in the early days of JIS encoding.
