Dear DI2000

I tried to edit the articles "European Australians"and "Australians" yesterday but I believe that you yourself deleted all the changes that I made.

Because the Australian government itself has stated that Asians make up 12% of the population of Australia and because you also have to take the numbers of the indigenous population as well as other non-Europeans into consideration, I feel it is wrong to claim that European-Australians make up 91% of Australia's total population. If Asian-Australians make up 12% then that means no more than 88% are of non-Asian origin. Add to that the numbers of indigenous and other non-European peoples and the figure would be even LOWER ( LESS than 88%) So please don't be racist! You have to take the number of Asian-Australians, the indigenous population as well as all other peoples of non- European origin into account. Help with script

Hi, I'd like to enlist your help in writing in a particular functionality in my Sources script. I have arrived at this result using adapted code. However, it is beyond me to work out how I could code up this part of the script to switch correctly-named sources into either italicised or non-italicised forms when these are parts of citations not employing citation templates – in other words, to substitute "[''table'']" for "[table]". I reckon it's different from the "newWord" technique successfully employed in this array. In addition, I'd be interested in restructuring the script by ejecting the tables/dictionaries, and it would be great if you could advise. Of course, if there are other ways to streamline the code, I'd be please to learn. There is some documentation as to the aims and principles at User:Ohconfucius/script/Sources. Hi. I noticed that you corrected the date formats on List of Ordinances and Acts of the Parliament of England, 1642–1660 but the corrections included amending the quoted titles. I believe the manual of style says date formats in quoted material should be preserved to match the original. Was your edit made using an automated script? The other day I made changes to the page for actress Monica Bellucci that have since been removed, with the moderator citing a lack of citation. The citations are at the bottom of the page and have been for years. The disputes over Bellucci's birth year have been ongoing and are not resolved because of the lack of credibility associated with tabloids and the continuing confusion. The page contains links giving her birth year as 1968 that have not been removed. New Zealand's Got Talent image

Hi there. On New Zealand's Got Talent, you've twice changed the address of the main image file to make it comply with a standard format - changing New Zealand's Got Talent Logo 2012-Present.jpg to New Zealand's Got Talent Logo 2012 – present.jpg. This breaks the image file. I assume you have something automatic set up to do this - could you please stop it from changing the image code on the NZGT page? I saw you added some tags to Alex Reid that removed ordinal suffixes, such as 24th December. I'm fine with it, as I always use DD MM YY, though I fell for conforming to the numerous other examples in the article (as I would resist changing aluminium in a British English article). However, I'm wondering why WP doesn't just convert these dates anyway, localized to the user/preference, or barring that, default to standard form. Unless you are asking for documentation regarding the puppets which will have been burnt around 1994 (I witnessed this event - I can vouch for the only copy of the documentation needed to back up this statement being destroyed as being of no further use at the time), then I fail to see what other proof could be provided.

You are refusing evidence to back up a statement and then alleging that it's a load of codswallop, when the evidence to prove my statement is right there before your very eyes.

As my brother has frequently said, Wikipedia moderators are rejected editors for Encyclopedia Britannica for one reason - they're not fit to run an encyclopedia if they do not hunt for proof of whatever kind or format.

I have read it a few times - it asks for no original research as Wikipedia cannot be a primary source, therefore any references outside are the primary source, Wikipedia is the secondary source.

On my second attempt at adding this information, I provided a photo linked on a secondary website which I did not have a hand in the creation of (apart from taking the original shots that the two episodes were in - I was the camera operator on the series for the first 4 series). Therefore, I provided a primary source of (pictographic) information as a reference (to which the difference I was drawing the reader's attention to would be obvious). Totally within those guidelines you asked me to read.

Template proliferation

I've been contemplating the issue of perpetual maintenance of the spellings, and coming to question the desirability of the various templates ({{Use Australian English}}, {{Use Canadian English}}, {{Use Indian English}}, {{Use Irish English}}, {{Use Jamaican English}}, {{Use New Zealand English}}, {{Use Pakistani English}}, {{Use South African English}}).

The above templates are basically a splintering off of articles employing spelling variants almost identical to mainstream British spelling – use of the script on any of them would not create odd-looking results. There is now the tendency to go into even smaller and smaller language-article groups, like {{use Hong Kong English}} and potentially {{use Singapore English}}. Now I understand that there are national sensitivities wrapped up in the use of 'Use British' template, but and think it may now be desirable to merge all of the above templates, as well as {{Use British English}}, into one template, to facilitate maintenance. I would propose that instead of templating by language group we used function-based tagging (such as going back to using {{EngvarB}}). The identifying template, although less easily parseable as an instruction to use appropriate spelling, would unify all the disparate tagged articles, and would not trigger nationalistic sensitivities. National variants can sometimes matter. {{Use Canadian English}} is neither entirely UK nor US, and definitely should not be merged to either {{Use British English}} or {{Use American English}}. Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Spelling#English spelling comparison chart highlights some of this. Also, the national variants don't merely involve spellings but word choices e.g. football in the UK would tend to be considered "soccer" in Australia, especially distinct from Australian rules football. Common noun issues can also be nation-specific e.g. Australian Labor Party vs Labour Party (UK). Merging the templates may make it more difficult to identify the sort of word choice issues that scripts cannot practically handle. The number of langvar templates seems to be reaching a plateau anyway; your script spelling fixes could simply fall into something like A/B/C for each template. Example, the album was released on October 21 2012, that's the proper way to say it, NOT the album was released on 21 October 2012. Ever hear anybody talk that way for real? Check the thousands of other album releases on Wikipedia and see what I mean. So don't tell me my edits weren't constructive. You're not the boss! When I get time, I will change them again!

  • The templates are not visible on the face of the article, and are there for maintenance purposes. The underlying principle for both templates is the same, please refer to documentation at {{Use dmy dates}}. They are necessary for individual articles' status to be tracked, and their 'correct' date formats and English code-spelling variants to be maintained. Some have also pointed out that their existence at the top of the edit window has the benefit of reminding other contributors what date format and which code is expected at any given article. It in no way implies that editors like yourself do not meticulously ensure that is already the case with individual articles, but overall such tagging benefits the corpus of articles so tagged going forwards. -- Ohconfucius ping / poke 05:49, 2 April 2013 (UTC)

Regarding these two edits: 1 & 2. There's currently a RFC underway at Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Wikidata Phase 2. Just because Wikidata inclusion is now possible doesn't mean we should treat it as default just yet. James Magnussen information

DI2000, I did not introduce wrong information on James Magnussen Wikipedia page, especially concerning the height. And it is not vandalism as you mention, as you will see below. For your information in Canada, here is the latest information published April 26th (3 days ago) after an interview given by James Magnussen himself before the Australian Swimming Championships currently held in Adelaide, South Australia.

"While he has changed mentally, Magnussen has also changed physically: he took six weeks off after the Olympics, and grew three centimetres." “I have put on a little bit of weight but my skin folds are lower. I’m leaner, but I have got a little bit more muscle and a little bit taller.”

Ganeshki, unfortunately several rules have to be applied. mdy (February 3, 1980) for US-related articles (except some military articles), and for articles that are not related to an anglophone country and already use mdy, or are chosen that way by the early editors. dmy (3 February 1980) for articles related to other anglophone countries (except that Canada can be either), and for articles that are not related to an anglophone country and already use dmy, or are chosen that way by the early editors. Yeah... see, the article already has a citation. Obviously you didn't even check it before putting back the INCORRECT birthdate for Saskia. The citation (that I did not put there, it was already there) confirms she is not 35, but rather is in her 40's. So, thanks for calling my information "incorrect" and my edit "vandalism" and for putting the article back to being incorrect.

You might believe she was born in 1977, I on the other hand know her personally. And I read the citation that confirms she is 43 years old. Eleanor Farjeon

Is her own autobiography not a reliable source? The game was also described in Eleanor Cameron's The Green and Burning Tree (Little, Brown 1985) -- should I use that instead? Until then, I'm putting that information back in and using A Nursery in the Nineties as my source as planned.

By the way, you're supposed to add the "citation needed" tag to things that need them on articles, rather than delete the part you think needs the citation. One of the things about Wikipedia is that people will put stuff in, then find the book or magazine it was cited in and come back and re-edit their entry. I am by no means the only one who does this. A simple "citation needed" tag is all that is necessary when you find uncited material. resolved invalid date formats?

Hello DI2000. I think your edit summaries regarding edits like this one are misleading by simply pointing at WP:MOSNUM. What does "resolved invalid date formats" exactly mean? I see nothing wrong with the use of {{date}} in any article, and the practice does not contradict any guidelines. Moreover, the template's page does not discourage its use. First, the "invalid date formats" usually refer to all-numeric date formats that are clearly not supported by WP:MOSNUM, e.g. "10/11/12" (now which date is that?) or "02-06-2013" (non-supported construct), or "2013-6-2" (which should be 2013-06-02 with leading zeroes). However, my bad on not seeing what the {{date}} wrapping was doing, namely rendering "{{date|2013-6-2}}" to "2 June 2013" so the edit summary didn't apply in that particular case. Note that this situation isn't seen that often in the articles, and as you mention the MoS doesn't directly deal with that situation. That said, the use of {{date}} within a reference template may "not contradict any guidelines" but there are other problematic aspects to doing that - first, the {{date}} documentation recommends "template is probably best used internally in other templates", so there is at least a mild discouragement to its use within articles. Also, what is being accomplished by using "{{date|2013-6-2}}" that couldn't be done by simply substituting the template to show "2 June 2013" (or writing that out directly)? The {{date}} template doesn't include additional special capability such as microformatting, hidden categorisation or autoformatting. Also note the Wikipedia:Transclusion costs and benefits essay - editors may object in cases where there are increasing numbers of nested templates that don't provide functionality beyond writing basic text, Now in conclusion, I'll try to leave the {{date|###}} constructs alone unless there is syntax damage, a wrong date result, etc., unless some consensus arises in the future to substitute things out. Use dmy dates: Why?

Can you please explain why you think this is a helpful edit? The article that you added the {{use dmy dates}} template to has no dates that would be affected by the template. All of the dates in the article are years without a month or day included. —David Eppstein (talk) 23:31, 12 July 2013 (UTC)

Given that this was tagged for 2 years, it is usually helpful to restore per template documentation, unless there is good reason to remove, which you have now provided. I'd just say that given the ultimate aim is to ensure that all Wikipedia articles have consistently-formatted dates, it would be necessary for any automated or semi-automated effort to rely on the existence of these tags to ensure completeness of the maintenance work. In other words, unless some other way is found to ensure compliance, all WIkipedia articles will be tagged with either {{use dmy dates}} ov {{use mdy dates}} sowhere down the line. What did was just change the birthdate from this format 29 May 1975 to the simpler way May 29, 1975. I wasn't trying to mess up anything or nothing like that.
