Introduction to contentious topics

You have recently edited a page related to the Arab–Israeli conflict, a topic designated as contentious. This is a brief introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.

A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have special powers in order to reduce disruption to the project.

I've noticed that you've expressed an interest in the Arab/Israel conflict. Unfortunately, due to a history of conflict and disruptive editing it has been designated a contentious topic and is subject to some strict rules.

The rule that affects you most as new or IP editor is the prohibition on making any edit related to the Arab/Israel conflict unless you are logged into an account and that account is at least 30 days old and has made at least 500 edits.

Heya!

Thanks for your interest and contributions to the New Zealand election pages Wikipedia. In regards to the Election results I appreciate the concerns you had with the new maps. Just before changing them around too much a talk page might be useful as that is what we've done before with party leader portraits (which are a nightmare to use freely in this country). Just because its better to have all the pages in the same style for ease of reading and information access id recommend trying a talk page first before attempting to change all the maps from 1957 onwards. Te Ara

I saw your edits on Tītokowaru's War then looked at your overall contributions and noted many of the Te Ara references don't have a URL and appear to be a copy & paste bellow the "How to cite this page" section. Would it be okay if you could try using "Template:Cite encyclopedia" for these circumstances, it's preferred using the template rather than just copy & pasting the text bellow the Te Ara article. Logo of the Reform Party of New Zealand

Kia ora. I have some questions regarding the logos of the Reform Party of New Zealand that you uploaded. I tried to find the source of these logos but haven't been able to come with anything. Additionally, I believe that the green colour used in the logos was never associated with the party before it was chosen on Wikipedia. Rather, the Reform Party primarily used blue while active.

I am extremely curious as to what these logos are based on. For now I have removed the logo from the page and added a note to the commons listing, I will be very happy to restore it once I have confirmed the source.

As I can see, they did use blue; the only reason I used green is because Wikipedia does - I assumed there was a source for this, and that the (teal) blue on the poster was just a faded shade of green. I don't have a direct source for the colour. Te Ara uses blue for Reform. I've tried to look through old discussions to find why green was chosen for Reform and couldn't find anything. Given that another poster by Reform used blue and red I assume that green was chosen to distinguish from National. Other international parties have been similarly coloured arbitrarily for distinction, e.g. Democratic-Republican Party.
Do you also have a source for the other logo?

By the way, I hadn't meant to make anything inaccurate. I just trusted that the colour green was sourced from somewhere, and adapted the logo on that poster. That poster definitely seems like a more legitimate logo given the flourishes of the kōwhaiwhai on the edges, the Jack and the Southern Cross. Dhantegge (talk) 01:30, 27 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I don't mean to say you intentionally did anything. It's a cool logo and well made. Before colour newspapers and TV there wasn't the consistency in political logos or colours that there is today. I wonder if it would be possible to include the ad as it is (an ad, not a logo?). Just a note to say it's great you're being so active improving topics related to Māori – something we all need to do more of in Aotearoa, and something I know is one of the strategic priorities of Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand (are you a member?) I hope my reply to you didn't sound discouraging. Ever since the great macron debate I've been thinking about the best ways to explain the need for better coverage of Māori topics to Wikipedians who could be anywhere in the world and whose primary motivation is the encyclopedia's consistency and improvement.
