Malwa

Deeptrivia;

You asked about how to define Malwa as a geographic region, so here's my $.02. I think that Malwa can be best described as lying on the Malwa Plateau, bounded on the south by crest of the Vindhyas, on the west by the hilly Vagad region, on the northwest by the Mewar region, on the north by Hadoti region, and on the east by Bundelkhand region. The article presently states that it includes the districts Neemuch, Mandsaur, Shajapur, Rajgarh, Ratlam, Ujjain, Dewas, Indore, Dhar, and Jhabua in Madhya Pradesh, as well as Jhalawar and parts of Banswara and Chittorgarh in Rajasthan. I think that is basically accurate, although I would also include portions of Sehore and Guna districts. Whether Bhopal is considered part of Malwa or not I don't know.

There is presently something of a disconnect in the article, as the first paragraph also says that the eastern part of Malwa is drained "by the Betwa and the headwaters of the Dhasan and Ken rivers." By this definition, Malwa would definitely include Bhopal, as well as the districts of Raisen and Vidisha, and perhaps parts of Ashoknagar and Sagar. A while back, the article made a distinction between "Malwa" as a region and the "Malwa Plateau" as a geologic feature; it is the Malwa plateau that reaches further east into Bundelkhand. Perhaps we could add a few caveats to the definition, so it could read thus:

"Malwa (माळवा in Malvi) is a region of western India, occupying a plateau of volcanic origin lying in the western part of Madhya Pradesh state and the southeastern part of Rajasthan state. The region includes the Madhya Pradesh districts of Dewas, Dhar, Indore, Jhabua, Neemuch, Mandsaur, Shajapur, Rajgarh, Ratlam, Ujjain, and portions of Guna and Sehore, and the Rajasthan districts of Jhalawar and parts of Banswara and Chittorgarh. The average elevation of the Malwa plateau is 500 metres about sea level and generally slopes towards the north. Most of the region is drained by the Chambal River and its tributaries, while the western part of the region is drained by the upper reaches of the Mahi River. Ujjain was the political, economic, and cultural capital of the region in ancient times, and Indore is presently the largest city and commercial centre.
"Politically and administratively, the definition of Malwa is sometimes extended to include the Nimar region south of the Vindhyas. Geologically, the Malwa Plateau often refers to the volcanic upland south of the Vindhyas which includes Malwa region, and extends east to include the upper basin of the Betwa and the headwaters of the Dhasan and Ken rivers."

...and thanks for the Barnstar! You are very thoughtful, and I really appreciate your work making this a great article. Tom Radulovich 20:13, 4 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Glad to be of assistance. Cheers, Tom Radulovich 04:18, 5 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Religion Portals

Will you please check out my talk page? Someone said that he will delete the religious portals I set up if I don't do this and that. Will you please update the religious portals to confirm to whatever standards. Any advice, suggestions, etc is appreciated. Maybe I shouldn't have wasted my time with creating the portals. --JuanMuslim 1m 21:10, 5 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Portal:Judaism is active and updated

Hi Deeptrivia: I noticed your concerns posted at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Judaism and this notice serves to hereby inform you that Portal:Judaism is completely updated and fully functional. A few of us continue to give it our fullest attention. If you have any (hopefully unfounded) concerns feel free to contact me or the creator of the portal User:Neutrality. Thank you. Re: Religion Portals

Indeed I did. Sorry, I didn't intend to. I believe I was looking at an older version of the page to see where the Philosophy Portal was previously, and then edited forgetting subsequent edits. I've returned them. Sorry again. On those Portals, however, are there maintainers for each? There's been a proliferation of Portals recently, most of which won't ever be updated; I hope the Religion Portals aren't such Portals.--cj | talk 13:31, 6 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Request for help

I started copyediting the article Indian names. There is still a lot of work to be done, but I'm hesitant to edit too heavily for fear of removing important information. I was wondering if you could give it a look? Kerowyn 08:11, 7 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Images

Hey Deeptrivia, I apologise for replying so late! (Somehow I skipped your message) By tagging an image as no source, they automatically become a part of Category:Images with unknown source. So I guess they should be considered for deletion. It's indeed suprising that it took so long for the concerned image to be deleted. Cheers --Deepak|वार्ता 22:45, 7 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'm an admin now!!

I hereby award Deeptrivia the Random Acts of Kindness Barnstar for his efforts in building, maintaining and rejuvenating Wikipedia Community, esp. the Indian one. --Gurubrahma 14:03, 8 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Deeptrivia, thanks a ton for your strong support; I've become an admin with the final tally reading 50-0-0. I've been keenly noticing the great work that you've been doing on Wikipedia, especially in relation to the Indian context. Your work in contributing to WP:INCOTW, in finding a huge image trove etc. has been very helpful in re-vitalising the Indian wikipedian community. It is my pleasure to award you a barnstar (though I'm still miffed that pamri beat me to it :-P). btw, I've been very lazy (truth is that I'm exploring admin rights and duties) and hence not in a position to contribute to the current INCOTW - however, I've added a link abt the sex scandal I was refering to previously. You may want to follow it and expand it. Thanks again, --Gurubrahma 14:03, 8 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Kalidasa

I saw your article on the above poet. One thing I remember, being myself a Sanskrit student, is that there are some characteristics on the writings of these (Kalidasa, Dandini etc.) poets. I remember one of them now, i.e., Upama Kalidasasya.........Dandinaha, like this. Let me think for some time for the details. Probably you know some of these. This is only for you information. You may be able to give some details to me.

--Dore chakravarty 19:14, 8 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Kalidasa and other Sanskrit authors

You can see para quoted below for the names of Sanskrit authors and also try web site http://www.kamat.com/kalranga/deccan/rashtrakutas/literature_sanskrit.htm

Rashtrakuta times witnessed unprecedented growth of Sanskrit in different fields, which has all – India relevance. Previous centuries are known as age of classical Sanskrit. Great writers, like Kalidas, Bhavabhuti, Bana and Dandin were products of that age.

re:barnstar

Yo holmes,

I thank you most sincerely for the barnstar. Coming from a distinguished Wikiuser like you, it is even more valued by me. I admire you very much.

I hope you can go over the Political Integration of India and kinda review it, coz I think there is a small degree of material that is contentious and possibly POV. I've tried to neutralize the language used to describe POVs, but its contentious stuff ndless.

I'll be around, but in case we don't bump into each other for a while, let me wish you and your family a very enjoyable holiday season and happy new year.

True, the Loc page was last updated on September 1995. I dumped it thinking it would be useful as a starting point. Sorry for that. Will cleanup & update it later. --PamriTalk 04:26, 10 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, great work!! am not sure if it is appropraite on commons though as it is n't clear if it has been released into PD. You may want to take a second opinion frm pamri. btw, just noticed that you've given a barnstar to User:Rama's Arrow - had lots of problems with him (I mentioned this in my answer to 3rd question on my rfa). Originally most of his edits were POV, but now-a-days it is a case of WP:V and original research (WP:NOR). Just wanted to tip you off on a friendly note so that you may either want to take a look at his contribs or keep off him. --Gurubrahma 14:01, 10 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I wasn't referring to User:Deepak Gupta. I was referring to User:Rama's Arrow alias User:Nirav.maurya. I agree with what you say about second chances - but some of the articles he creates are already available or the titles are inapropriate as perWP:MoS. I just wanted to let you know, it is fine to give him a second chance. That is the reason why I did not file an RfC against him though a couple of senior sysops advised me to do so. --Gurubrahma 15:40, 10 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I did not know abt this before. Thanks for informing me, I can look at him in much better light now. In fact, another reason why I did not file RfC was exactly because he stopped using anon edits and created a new account & re-organized his activities. Thanks a ton, again. --Gurubrahma 16:28, 10 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

NPOV on Political Integration of India

Hey Deeptrivia, I need your help in understanding something important:

My only reference from outside the Wikipedia, and for 95% of the material, was Rajmohan Gandhi's book, which I've cited. I've taken care to distinguish Gandhi's personal assertions, which I've specially said come from him and his book, while neutralizing the language of the whole text I've written.

BUT, BUT, BUT Gandhi produces many references that put a black light on Pakistan and some Muslim figures in this article. GANDHI HAS THOSE REFERENCES IN HIS BOOK, while we can't list those here. All through his book, he has a plethora of quotes and lists his references copiously.

What I'm trying to say is that what others might see as Gandhi's POV, is most likely not POV at all, but verifiable fact.

So when other people might come along and delete the seemingly anti-Jinnah language, I get a little peeved. How shall we deal with this problem?

Jai Sri Rama!

Footnotes

Hi DT, there are three citation styles: (1) embedded links, which is this [1] or (2) Harvard referencing, which is (Singer 1975) after the sentence, both of which have to be followed by a full citation in the References section; or (3) footnotes, which you know about already. My own preference is embedded links and Harvard referencing, because the sources are immediately there after the sentence for the reader to see, rather than having to go to the bottom of the page for a footnote. WP:CITE advises against changing from embedded links/Harvard referencing to footnotes or vice versa, and says where agreement can't be reached, the first citation style on the page should be used. It's a shame that people at peer review are recommending footnotes, because most editors don't like them, though perhaps that's my own bias showing through. Re: Jagjivan Ram image

Good work on getting the image. But you should have told them that free images on wikipedia along with it's content can also be used for commercial purposes, albeit with the credit/attribution and copyright intact. Suggest using a license like {{cc-by-sa-2.5}} will ensure they will be credited for and any distribution will occur under the same terms. And offer {{CopyrightedFreeUse}} as a simple alternative. Do check other requests for permission at WP:BRP. In case they agree, you can leave the image at commons and follow the instructions at Wikipedia:Successful requests for permission. If they don't, upload it here and use the {{Non-free fair use in}} tag along with a note stating you have got the permission to use it here. --PamriTalk 06:43, 11 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Arabic Numerals

Just a note that it seems like whoever removed the disputed tag might have done it on accident in an attempt to revert other vandalism. Peyna 15:45, 11 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Another note that I have taken the content that was being repeatedly added by User:Csssclll and moved it to a new article entitled Alternative views on Arabic numerals, and provided appropriate links. This should help to stem the tide of constant reverts and allow editors to focus on each respective body of material on its own. If the alternative views article seems to be a very fringe point of view on the topic it can be deleted in the future through an AfD. Peyna 17:13, 11 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Violation of WP:3RR - Thanks for informing!!

I have blocked User:Astriolok and User:Csssclll for 24 hours each for violation of 3RR and User:Peyna for 3 hours for making 3 reverts in 24 hours as the blocking policy is very clear that all parties violating the rule must be treated equally. btw, a personal note from me to you - please use edit summaries when edit wars are taking place and do not mark reverts or any other edits as minor. Thanks again. --Gurubrahma 18:52, 11 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Hey

Thanks for the message Deeptrivia. I am also surprised that among the Moroccans you know, nobody got a good command of English! I've also had many great Indian friends. I see that your French is so very good and that you were studying in Lyon. -- Svest 20:35, 11 December 2005 (UTC)  Wiki me up™[reply]

Thanks again! It's a pleasure to work with you as well. Sometimes, because of some bad faith edits and comments made by some established editors make me think that I am in the wrong place. Isn't that a lack of knowledge from their part?! Aren't established wikipedians more knowledgeable than most of people on earth?! Still to be verified!
However, there is always hope and that what counts. Getting to know wikipedians like you makes one feel at ease (just like at home) and keep going on. Cheers -- Svest 23:26, 11 December 2005 (UTC)  Wiki me up™[reply]

Arabic numerals

Heh, I wasn't trying to make a statement, I just dislike the expression "numeral symbols", I get wrong associations from it. They're really glyphs, but since that's not a widely known word, and I can't come up with anything better, I can live with "numeral symbols".

As I said on that page, I haven't studied the history of Arabic numerals, so I can't NPOV the article myself. It would be nice if somebody went through my version and corrected any wrong info. We just need to make sure that it primarily deals with what Arabic numerals are, not with why calling them Arabic is "wrong". There are plenty of similar examples, like French fries, English horn, etc., where this is usually dealt with in a sentence. Even if Arabs had absolutely nothing to do with the transfer of the numerals from India to Europe, what more does one need than something like "Despite their name, Arabic numerals are actually of Indian origin" and a pointer to the appropriate article? Zocky 21:52, 12 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I went and moved more endless talk about history to the talk page of the history article, and moved that article to History of the Hindu-Arabic numeral system, to match the title of Hindu-Arabic numeral system. I hope that's more to your liking. I also tried to reiterate this division of issues between articles on talk:Arabic numerals. Let's see if that will help. Zocky 22:46, 13 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Lots of issues ;-)

hi, after the revert war and my blocking on basis of WP:3RR, several things've happened - User:Csssclll has accused me of being partisan on fora like Slashdot - the link is in this thread. He had e-mailed me to that effect and I had replied saying that I have blocked others as well. To this, he says that I've done so only after he threatened to report it to neutral admins. He doesn't realise that anyone can expose his lies by looking at the block log. However, I'm unable to reply on slashdot due to some problem with my browser. If you deem it necessary, you may want to reply, especially as he has acused you also, so I am tipping you abt the incident. btw, Nirav informed me abt the new template - left some comments on User_talk:Rama's_Arrow#reg_new_template. You may want to have a look at that. --Gurubrahma 03:48, 13 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thanks for your message; WP:NPA is like holy grail here. I'll need to make further investigations about the users involved. Thanks for the headsup. --Gurubrahma 04:32, 13 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Your question

Glad that you found it yourself. I was unwell for the past four days and back only today. Continue your good work. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 08:13, 13 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Watchlist my talkpage!!

User:Csssclll has something to say abt you on my talkpage. You don't need to reply to that but I just thought I'll let you know. I'm looking at the evidence and it indicates that I am on to something big. Regarding Nirav's enthusiasm, I think it is better to revive Portal:India rather than start something new - it can be used for freedom struggle etc. and later expanded to other Indian content. However, I'm apprehensive because handling a portal also means handling several egos and building consensus - I suspect if Nirav can handle that. For example, in Sanjay Gandhi, he is using an unreliable reference - that has been successfully challenged in Indian courts and is being modified in accordance with its judgement - for his arguments. However, as the saying goes, nothing ventured nothing gained. So, I guess it wd be a good idea to ask him to manage Portal:India but we shd also ask him to be aware that it can be tough on him. Also, we shd ask him to get the template subst:ed and deleted. I guess most of the problems he has been facing is because he is not aware of Wikipedia's policies fully yet and inadvertently ends up reinventing the wheel. You can ask him to look at Portal:India. If and when he does that, it'd be a good idea for him to register at WP:INWNB and announce at its talk page, the revival of the portal. --Gurubrahma 09:38, 13 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Re:template

Hi DeepT,

I understand your points about the length and unnecessary categorization. I will clean up the template shortly.

I was trying to provide a fundamental connection board so that people can find all kinds of articles. You know, if people are just getting curious about the freedom struggle by reading about Gandhi, whom they've just heard as a leader of peace, it is helpful to have a template there. This issue has a whole network of articles as big as Hinduism and Islam. Both of those have manageable templates so I think we can make this work.

But I honestly don't believe it should be deleted. It can be merged with IndiaPortal, but its independence must be retained so that an article-to-article link base is available for users.

Jai Sri Rama!

Rama's Arrow 15:20, 13 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I've cleaned up a lot on the template. Its now about the same with Template:Hinduism. Thanks for your comments and work in proliferating it.

Rama's Arrow 16:42, 13 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thanks for your advice. I've reduced the size as much as I humanely think is possible. I don't think we should adjust the Leaders section any further, becoz I feel that the diversity of generations, political spectrum and leader-ordinary freedom fighter balance should be preserved. I've also posted an entry on the talkpage as you suggested.

I guesstimate we've struck down the size by 50%

More Arabic Numerals

I've gotten tired of reverting the page and trying to figure out what belongs and what doesn't. It's been quite a pain. For now, I've moved the page back to what is the closest to what was decided in the discussion. I've tried to distance myself from it for the time being and see if other editors that weren't involved in the original mess can resolve it. Peyna 15:19, 13 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
