Pentrehobyn
Should any wealthy Wikipedian based in North Wales want to rent out Pentrehobyn for the weekend, [1] they could obtain much-needed photographs of two of Flintshire's Grade I listed buildings in a single visit. KJP1 (talk) 08:19, 3 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If it's only 12 miles, get on yer bike, say you are interested in booking a wedding, and get me images of the house and the weirdly named Llettau! KJP1 (talk) 11:53, 3 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for uploading File:BD25 bid logo.svg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
You are wrong that the Welsh translation of Summer Hill is Brynhyfryd. The error arises because Wrexham Council have wrongly translated Summer Hill as Brynhyfryd in their road signs, quite possibly as a result of consulting this wiki article. Wrexham Council have made other false translations
as is widely known. Look at the early six inch ordnance survey maps of the area and nowhere will you see Brynhyfryd. It simply does not exist except as an error. Murgs2 (talk) 23:59, 26 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Murgs2, you're not supposed to correct names on your own, but represent what name is used. Nonetheless, the Welsh name today is the so-called "incorrect" one. Raise it with the council first. We only change it here when they and others use your correction first. The Welsh language commissioner raised no objections to it. DankJae00:01, 27 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Brynhyfryd occurs on no map of the area past or present. Summerhill does. The Summerhill development only dates from the 20thC and the name is English, not a translation of a previously existing Welsh place name. Brynhyfryd has therefore been (incorrectly) translated from English to Welsh. The Welsh borders have very few Welsh speakers which is why this error has gone unnoticed. We can also be sure that this is not a case of the Welsh calling an area one thing and the English another because Brynhyfryd does not appear on maps. The Ordnance Survey maps
name even the smallest collections of houses with their Welsh names yet do not record Brynhyfryd. Nor was this area anything but open fields before the first Ordnance Survey maps. 148.252.159.14 (talk) 02:07, 28 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Still Original Research, if Welsh speakers don't have an issue with the so-called "incorrectly" translated name and still use it then we should include it rather than a generated fake (but direct translated) name. Wikipedia is not a place to WP:ADVOCATE for directly translated Welsh names by the preference of one person on the internet wanting to call it that to WP:RIGHTGREATWRONGS of real-world errors before the places or sources use them themselves.
You need to provide a source of the alt Welsh name used for the Wrexham place, if you can't, it can't be used here. Raise it with the council or commissioner first, not Wikipedia. DankJae07:13, 28 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Community Maps
Hi there. Quick question: do we really need two very similar maps in the infoboxes of towns? If community ones are better, shouldn't they replace the location marker ones? Sirfurboy🏄 (talk) 08:07, 4 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Sirfurboy, the pinpoint map is generated automatically by the template so can’t really remove it. Plus the pinpoint does show some other features like roads the community ones don’t. Understand the duplication concerns, would’ve preferred a switcher between the marker and the community but the template doesn’t allow it. So module was the next best thing. DankJae13:09, 4 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I don't really see the roads as a benefit. What is needed is a way to suppress the one in favour of the other. If I ever find the time (unlikely!), I'll look at the template. Sirfurboy🏄 (talk) 14:24, 4 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Sirfurboy, good luck. I couldn’t see a solution, myself. Not sure how to mix a location map template with a svg file. But having one file at a time would be nice.
The template is template-editor protected, and found the talk page to be slow at adopting anything when I raised a few tweaks. DankJae14:28, 4 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Although note, for very large rural communities, with a small village of the same name. The pinpoint map is more accurate to pinpoint the village rather than the community map. So both have merit imo. DankJae14:29, 4 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I made one minor addition to the lead. The lead is a little light at the moment, but not sure what else to add to it. The history in the article is excellent, and I expect this could be published asis. It is way better than most pages that get started. Sirfurboy🏄 (talk) 08:14, 14 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello! Voting in the 2024 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 2 December 2024. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
Hi Jae, I hope you are well. Just wondering why you have deleted some of the changes I made earlier today on the Hendy Wiki page? I am from the village and everything that I added or changed was factually correct. Eg ‘part of Llanedi not Llanelli community council’. Is there any particular reason for deleting? I’m recently retired and was going to add more content to this and the Wiki Cymraeg page, however I won’t bother if it’s breaking any rules I’m not aware of and going to be deleted. Diolch gary Reesga7 (talk) 16:55, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Reesga7, hi, I’ll admit I may have been a bit too tough, as it was a quick edit at work, but three main points I had (if I removed anything else then be free to re-add).
Please add citations/sources (you appeared to have removed one?)
Hendy is currently titled Hendy, so unless there is proof sources now that sources use the Welsh name in English more over just "Hendy", keep the lead using the article title first. Unless a discussion raised on changing the article to Yr Hendy based on new evidence.
Under WP:CSC for notable people lists please only add people with a Wikipedia article. But notice you didn't link the politicians, so apologies if they had articles, but please link them! Also these entries have to be directly connected to the place, i.e. born/lived there.
Croeso. Diolch. Thanks for your efforts, it takes a while to understand all the policies and guidelines, and appreciate your efforts. Not my intention to discourage, so apologies if it felt so. My first edits too were reverted, it just takes time to understand everything. Wish you well on your Wikipedia adventure! DankJae18:06, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
