Hi Daniel, Wow, so you got to do your interview with Matthew in person, that's so cool! He told me he was going off to Brazil, but I certainly didn't imagine he would be seeing you, otherwise I would have told him, "Say HI to Daniel for me!" I wish I had! What a small world it is. I am OK, but I tore a ligament in my knee a couple months ago, so I am in a brace and doing physical therapy for it. Nontheless I am trying to do more work on Wikipedia than I have done for most of this year. I am currently making some needed genus article stubs to fill in the most noticeable gaps we have, and a few odds and ends of species stubs too. Hello Daniel

Thank you for the very cool Barnstar!!! I checked our your user page and see you are into curating shell collections like I am. I've been at it most of my life and over the years I started working on a computer database program to help keep things organized. Initially I wrote it in DBase for DOS, but then Windows came along and DBase was bought out and shut down. More recently I got my program updated to run as a stand alone program in a Windows environment. I call it the Shell Collection Database Management Program, but it could really be used for any taxonomic collection from beetles to plants. Check out my user page and the link I have to a shell dealer's site, Sanibel Shellers, who is marketing it for me. The idea is that each family is listed in taxonomic order, and family numbers are assigned to allow the database to list the collection in systematic order by family, then alphabetical order under family by genus, and alpha order under genus by species, etc. Each data record for a specific lot number (assigned by the program beginning with No. 1, then 2, and so on) has fields for family, genus, species, subspecies, author, locality, collector, field data & notes, and an image can be linked as well. To me the most important feature is being able to do searches and reports by any data field, adn being able to print data labels. If you are interested let me know.

Hello Daniel. Maybe you are very busy in Real Life (?) but if you have some time, I would like to ask you if you would look over the new cone snail genus article Africonus. It is more or less the same as the similar one Asprella. We want to try to make sure this/these are really in great shape before we use them as a basis for creating another 80 similar ones. I figure you are probably aware of the article guidelines a bit more than I am. For example, 10 different references at the end of the "Significance" section might be too many? No problem! The important thing is to cite the source, keeping a neutral point of view. These are encyclopedic articles, so it's okay to provide information in an impartial manner. Taxonomy based on morphology (shells, but also soft parts) should not be dismissed. Even though molecular studies are likely to modify the taxonomy of the groups, they are all falsifiable hypotheses to be tested, not absolute truths. In an encyclopedic article, it is more than fair that we may present every proposal of classification, in chronological order. I believe it is not our duty here to judge them in any way. Strombus alatus

I realise that you currently have more pressing concerns with regard to your FAC. My inclination is to fail the Slug GA nomination so I am putting it on hold for a week. I will let you weigh in on them, because I think I don't know enough about this species or family to be really helpful with these, although... if you are busy fro a few days I will have a go at doing it myself. But neither this, nor its distinction from L. turturella is discussed in the article.

From what I've seen, Man In 'T Veld & Turck (1997 article from Gloria Maris, which I cited in the article recently) considered L. canarium and L. turturella as distinct (yet sympatric) species, based mainly on shell morphology and a very questionable radular comparison. The shell comparison is rather convincing, though. On the other hand, Cob (article cited in the synonyms ref) did a review of some strombus species in 2009... He examined shell and anatomical characters, chiefly genitalia, operculum and radula, and he kept turturella as synonym of canarium. The logical conclusion is that he didn't find significant differences between them in that regard. He noted for example that the radula varies widely so it could not be used as comparative character (this is knonw for a fact, quite obvious anyway). The sample he analyzed was quite large. WoRMS is following Man In 'T Veld & Turck (I was told thar by Gijs Kronenberg, from NBC Naturalis, Leiden). We have two choices here. If we follow Cob, which is the latest published review, we must consider turturella as synonyms, thus denying WoRMS in that matter. We would have to merge the articles, too... If we follow Man In 'T Veld & Turck, we'll have to change the taxobox picture (it's a specimen of turturella, by their definition), and rewrite a good deal of text throughout... A third option would be dealing with the matter from a neutral point of view, only exposing the controversy, without following any party. "Revision of the family Strombidae (Gastropoda) on the supra specific level, part one" Kreukel (Amsterdam) 44 (3-4): 35–64, that L. canaries was designated the type species of a new subtribe Canariini, but this is not discussed (or mentioned) in the article.

• any luck finding out about subspecies guido? I have the article citation, if that helps at all.

I am getting better thanks Daniel. I saw my osteopath yesterday and he put my sacroiliac joint back the way it's supposed to be. (I have joints that are unusually mobile; the sacroiliac moves more than it is supposed to and sometimes goes out of alignment). Now I just have to wait for the muscles to calm down as it was out for about 2 days and my muscles did not like that at all! Yesterday I could hardly stand up or walk. Oh... I see you have already added it in. But do you think a mention of Bouchet's 2011 WoRMS opinion would be OK or not? He is after all one of the world's leading taxonomists. And it sort of explains indirectly why "we" have sided with them being separate species.

Apicalia chuni for deletion.

Greetings Daniel, as you may know, lately I have been creating articles on genera and species of the Eulimidae family of gastropods along with working towards improving the Pyramidellidae articles Ganeshbot created back in late 2011. I started with my first article in the Eulimidae family being Acrochalix which I created on 20 December 2012 and up until now I have created over 200 other articles related, I am currently up to the major Eulima genus of Eulimidae and I have been working towards completing the species in that genus (along with the help of another user, Christopholes). Today, I revised on some of the earlier articles I had created around Christmas time and stumbled across Apicalia chuni, an article I had created on 22 December 2012. I searched this species in the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) and realized that Apicalia chuni is actually in fact a Species Inquirenda and not a standard taxonomic species (can be found here). Because of this disastrous mistake I have made, I have decided that it is probably best to delete this article completely. Although I just thought I would discuss this action with another member of Wikiproject Gastropods before I go ahead with it entirely. Do you think that the deletion of this article could possibly be declined or maybe it should just stay as it is? Please let me know your opinion. Thank you, take care!

Hey Toady! Thanks for the compliment. Oh it was no easy task. A bit too hard, maybe. Can anyone who doesn't have access to a top notch scientific library do that? I wonder... I wouldn't be able to do it if I wasn't a specialist myself. Anyway, don't worry. You were not wrong to begin with, and I don't think you need to delete the article. Let's see things from my point of view: species inquirenda is a transitory status. It means further study is necessary to determine its identity - but nothing has been decided. Will it be a nomen nudum? Will it be considered a valid name? No one knows for now. I would keep the article as it is, except for an observation about it's species inquirenda status. Better shell images for Lobatus gigas

Hello Daniel, I am trying to get the five-view image of the shell de-listed as a featured picture, because the lip of the shell has been filed or cut and therefore the image is very misleading in that area. See this delist nomination: gigas 01.jpg. You will see that I have also included there these same thumbnails of two images that show the intact lip really well. Maybe one of them should be added to the article, but where? I believe it would be good to take the 5-view image out of the article, what do you think? Moreover, a new picture (one of these two you've shown) should include a note about the lip in the caption as well. Hi Daniel, the thorough copyedit was a very nice improvement to the article, but there are one or two places where the copyeditor may perhaps have accidentally changed the meaning just a little bit. Under Collections, Fish, it now reads, "With the establishment of graduate programs and Brazilian research, the collection continues to grow.[3]", but perhaps you meant to say that the graduate students themselves had done a lot of the research and collecting? I am not sure... If not, then it should at least say "more Brazilian research", or "more research on the Brazilian fauna", or something like that, right? More about Hipponix

Hello Daniel, I have been searching various beaches and have been picking up all the Hipponix I can find for you. The shells are mostly rather beach-worn, but I suppose having a large number of them will be useful in order to show the variation within the species in terms of size shape and color. I currently have probably over a hundred of the most common species: (names may not be correct) H. subrufus; probably about 40 of H. antiquatus/leptus; right now only two H. incurvus; and one damaged H. costellatus. Hi JoJan! Ah, thank you =)! It's actually my fourth species. I've already described 4 new taxa, 2 marine snails (P. phorcysi and Nassarius levis), and two land snails (Oxychona maculata and Leiostracus fetidus). I have also co-authored the redescription of Solatisonax cabrali, and revision of the genus Teralatirus, among many other things. There are many more papers to come in the near future! Their results indicate there are actually more species than initially thought, or so I think. I understand your concern, but the text is almost entirely verbatim from a 19th century work, and I still need to carefully check that the text is 100% true to the original work (it appears to be). Unfortunately, I don't have time to check this right away, and it could take a few days. Furthermore, I think it is pertinent to state here that the text was not simply copied, but transferred because the content no longer refers to the object of the original article, due to taxonomic changes. In the case of old work, which is in the public domain, is there really a need for more copyright measures beyond simply citing it in the refs? Thank you.
